WhatsApp to show 'recently online' information on contact list page: Report

WhatsApp has reportedly started testing a new feature in beta release for iOS devices that would allow users to see contacts that have been online recently right on top of their contacts list. WhatsApp update tracking website WABetaInfo has reported that the instant messaging platform from Meta has released an update, WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.9.10.71, on the iPhone TestFlight app that enables the feature. According to the report, the feature was previously spotted on WhatsApp for Android beta update 2.24.9.14, which is currently under testing too.

WhatsApp’s ‘Recently Online’ feature: What it is

As part of the contact list on WhatsApp, the “recently online” feature provides an alternative list of contacts that have been found online recently. Essentially, it shows a limited view of your contacts’ recent activity on WhatsApp. Therefore, you will soon see a list of contacts first based on which contacts have been active on the platform recently, followed by a full contacts list.

In the public version currently available for all on iOS and Android, users have the option to choose in the “Privacy Settings” who can see their “last seen” and who can see when they are online. This indicator appears beneath the contact name when you open their chat. However, on disabling their own last seen, users cannot see when other people were last seen or online. Users can choose to show their last seen or when they are online to either “Everyone”, “My contacts”, “Nobody”, or “My contacts except”.

According to the WABetaInfo report, these settings will integrate with “recently online”, and contacts that have disabled last seen will not be included in the “recently online” list.

Arc browser now available for Windows: What it is, how to download, install

Arc browser now available for Windows: What it is, how to download, install

The Browser Company has released its Arc browser for Windows 11. Based on the free and open-source Chromium engine, the Arc browser for Windows 11 is built on Apple’s Swift programming language. It essentially allows the Windows version of the browser to maintain features parity with the Apple version.

However, the initial version of the Arc browser for Windows lacks some features that are supported on Apple’s macOS version, such as Little Arc that opens a link in a floating pop-up window. On the other hand, the Windows version of the Arc browser supports touchscreen.

The Arc browser from Browser Company is currently limited to Windows 11, but support for Windows 10 is in the works – according to a news report on Tech Crunch.

Arc browser for Windows 11: Details

Similar to the Mac version, the Arc browser for Windows 11 has a collapsible sidebar positioned at the left side. This is where all the action happens, while the main browser window remains free from distraction. Below are the features offered by Arc browser on Windows:

Spaces: Serve as a bin or a folder where you can nest tabs into distinct sets tailored for various tasks such as “Work” and “Home”.

Profiles: Dedicated profiles for different users allow the browser to segregate browsing data and preferences, thereby enabling a personalised browsing experience.

Split view: Shows multiple tabs side-by-side within a single window for improved multitasking.

Split view

Picture-in-picture video player: Allows users to stream videos in a pop-up window, which is moveable. This functionality is said to enhance user productivity by eliminating the need to switch between tabs or windows, thereby streamlining the browsing experience.

Arc browser for Windows: How to download

Since Windows natively supports third-party app downloads from their respective websites, the Arc browser can be downloaded and installed directly from the Browsing Company’s web portal. It is currently not available on the Microsoft Store. Therefore, follow the steps to download the Arc browser on Windows 11:

Open any browser and go to – https://arc.net/

Tap on the “Download Arc for Windows 11” option.

Grant permission to download, if the pop-up appears, and select the folder to download the installer package.

Go to the folder where the installer package is and double click on it.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install the browser.

Once done, the browser icon will appear on the home screen. If not, go to the start-up menu and manually search for “Arc” to find the browser. You can pin it to the taskbar for convenience.

Soon, Instagram to recommend more original content from creators: Details

Soon, Instagram to recommend more original content from creators: Details

Meta’s social media platform Instagram has announced changes to its ranking system algorithms to bring content from original creators upfront in the recommendations feed. Until now, accounts with substantial followers have been able to get wider reach on the platform even if the content is not original but a mere repost of someone else’s work. This has led to criticism from creators on Instagram, especially those posting original content or new to the platform because their posts have been restricted by the Instagram ranking algorithms.

Following the criticism from creators, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced changes to the platform ranking system to reward original content on the platform. Mosseri in his video post on Instagram said “We’re going to remove aggregators from recommendations if they repeatedly share unoriginal content that they didn’t enhance. To aggregator accounts out there: I recommend looking for ways to make content your own so you can continue to be recommended to people who don’t follow you.”

In addition, Instagram said it will replace reposted content in recommendation feed with the original content. Moreover, the social media platform said it will show a label to highlight reposted content that will be visible to the followers of the account reposting content. Though the label is removable for now, Instagram said it might not allow creators to remove such labels on reposted content in future.

The changes in ranking system algorithms are slated to roll out in the coming months.

In other news, Meta is testing its artificial intelligence-powered chatbot Meta AI with select users across its popular social media apps like WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram in India. The chatbot service from the social media giant will allow users to generate text and images, summarise stories, and help with other tasks such as proofreading, editing, and translation, among others. In September last year, the company launched Meta AI in beta as a conversational assistant for WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram.

Microsoft's concerns over Google's lead drove investment in OpenAI

Microsoft's concerns over Google's lead drove investment in OpenAI

Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO (Photo: Bloomberg)

Microsoft Corp.’s motivation for investing heavily and partnering with OpenAI came from a sense of falling badly behind Google, according to an internal email released Tuesday as part of the Justice Department’s antitrust case against the search giant.

The Windows software maker’s chief technology officer, Kevin Scott, was “very, very worried” when he looked at the AI model-training capability gap between Alphabet Inc.’s efforts and Microsoft’s, he wrote in a 2019 message to Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella and co-founder Bill Gates. The exchange shows how the company’s top executives privately acknowledged they lacked the infrastructure and development speed to catch up to the likes of OpenAI and Google’s DeepMind.

The email was released late Tuesday after media organizations including the New York Times and Bloomberg intervened in the landmark antitrust suit to push for greater public access. The US Justice Department has argued that OpenAI’s ChatGPT and other innovations may have been released years ago if Google hadn’t monopolised the search market.

Scott, who also serves as executive vice president of artificial intelligence at Microsoft, observed that Google’s search product had improved on competitive metrics because of the Alphabet company’s advancements in AI. The Microsoft executive wrote that he made a mistake by dismissing some of the earlier AI efforts of its competitors.

“We are multiple years behind the competition in terms of machine learning scale,” Scott said in the email. Significant portions of the message, titled ‘Thoughts on OpenAI,’ remain redacted. Nadella endorsed Scott’s email, forwarding it to Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood and saying it explains “why I want us to do this.”

Microsoft has poured more than $13 billion into its partnership and backing of OpenAI, tapping the startup’s generative-AI technology to enhance its Bing search service, Edge internet browser and, most notably, integrate an AI Copilot service into Windows. Nadella has elevated the AI race to a priority at the company, also recruiting DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to run its consumer AI business.

Nadella answered questions about the email when he testified at the trial last fall.

“As it relates to search, we wanted to sort of ensure that we could think about innovation in the search category with” large language models like those developed by OpenAI, Nadella said. But he later added that the “investment was not made with the narrow focus on just search.”

Microsoft and Google declined to make the email available when requested by reporters last year on the grounds that it would reveal sensitive business information. Media outlets pushed for its release, and Judge Amit Mehta last week ordered the companies to provide a redacted version, as the contents “shed light on Google’s defense concerning relative investments by Google and Microsoft in search.”

Google and the Justice Department will make closing arguments in the case on Thursday and Friday. Judge Mehta is expected to issue his decision later this year.

The case is US v. Google, 20-cv-3010, US District Court, District of Columbia.

Google last year rejected 2.28 mn apps for violating Play Store policies

Google last year rejected 2.28 mn apps for violating Play Store policies

Google, Google Inc (Photo: Bloomberg)

Tech giant Google last year blocked 2.28 million apps worldwide from being published on its Play Store, citing violations of its policies.

The company, in 2023, also banned 333,000 “bad accounts” from Play for violations and malware. Google said it had strengthened its processes for on-boarding and reviewing developers, requiring more identity information when developers first establish their Play accounts.

More than 200,000 app submissions were rejected or remediated to ensure proper use of sensitive permissions, such as background location or SMS access, according to a company blog post.

Some 1.5 million services that did not meet the company’s latest application programming interfaces – a software intermediary that allows two applications to talk to each other – are no longer available in the Play Store to new users who have updated their devices to Google’s latest Android version.

Google said it worked with providers of software development kit (SDK) – a set of tools to build software for a particular platform –to limit sensitive data access and sharing and strengthen privacy.

“We have also significantly expanded the Google Play SDK Index, which now covers the SDKs used in almost six million apps across the Android ecosystem. This valuable resource helps developers make better SDK choices, boosts app quality, and minimises integration risks,” said the company.

For data privacy, Google now requires account initiation and data deletion from within apps and online.

“This web requirement is especially important so that a user can request account and data deletion without having to reinstall an app. To simplify the user experience, we have also incorporated this as a feature within the Data Safety section of the Play Store,” it said.
