 April 17 (Reuters) – The Telegram messaging app, one of the most popular social media platforms in Ukraine and Russia, will likely cross 1 billion active monthly users within a year, its founder said in remarks published on Tuesday.

 


In a rare interview, Pavel Durov told US journalist Tucker Carlson that the Dubai-based free cloud-based app that allows users to send and receive messages, calls and other files, is spreading like a “forest fire”.

 


“We’ll probably cross 1 billion monthly active users within a year now,” Durov, who fully owns Telegram, told Tucker, according to the video interview posted on Tucker’s account on the X social media platform.

 


The goal of the app, which has now 900 million active users, is to remain a “neutral platform” and not a “player in geopolitics,” Durov said. The Russia-born entrepreneur said he had fled Russia in 2014 citing government interference in a company he founded.

 


One of Telegram’s main rivals, Meta Platforms’ WhatsApp, has more than 2 billion monthly active users. The Financial Times reported in March that Telegram would likely aim for a US listing once the company had reached profitability.

 


After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Telegram has become an instrumental tool for both governments and a go-to place for posting and accessing unfiltered information about the war.

 


Almost all major media, government entities and public figures in both Russia and Ukraine operate content channels on Telegram.


Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy posts his daily video addresses on the app, while his armed forces warn of air raids and document battlefield developments. The Kremlin announces President Vladimir Putin’s activities on Telegram, while Russia’s opposition rallies for support.

 


But the app, critics said, has also become a tool of misinformation and manipulation. A bill submitted to the Ukrainian parliament in March looks at stricter regulation of Telegram and other social networks.

 


The Kremlin told Durov to be more attentive after the messaging application was allegedly used to help recruit the gunmen who attacked a concert hall outside Moscow in March.

WhatsApp is rolling out chat filters to make it easier for instant messaging platform users to find the conversation they are looking for without having to scroll through the entire inbox.


Meta-owned instant messaging platform said that chat filters will allow users to find unread messages and groups fast, without having to scroll through the entire inbox. The feature is now rolling in a graded manner on all platforms, including the smartphone app for Android and iOS devices.


With chat filters on WhatsApp, users can choose between three filters that appear at the top of the inbox. These filters comprise all, unread, and groups. Below are the details:


All: Taping on “All” will provide the default view of all messages


Unread: Selecting the “Unread” filter only shows messages that are either marked as unread or have not been opened by the user yet. This filter allows prioritising responses and groups all the messages together that the user might want to respond to.


Groups: The “Group” filter organises all group chats from the inbox in one place, making it easier to find a WhatsApp group among individual conversations. This filter will also show subgroups of Communities that the user is part of.


These chat filters are new to the platform. The instant messaging platform also has a search option that allows users to search a chat by date filter. The feature has been available on iOS devices and rolled out on Android earlier this year. Using this filter within chats, users can select a date and skip to all messages sent from that date onwards. The feature is not limited to searching for chats but also shows media, links and documents shared on a specific date.

The social media platform X (formerly Twitter) announced on Tuesday that it had restricted access to certain posts in India that included political statements from elected politicians, political parties, and candidates for upcoming polls following a takedown order from the country’s election commission.

The poll panel found that the objectionable posts were in violation of the model code of conduct.

According to a statement from X, in compliance with the orders of the Election Commission of India (ECI), the platform has withheld some posts for the remainder of the election period. 

Owned by Elon Musk, X expressed disagreement with the orders.


“We disagree with these actions and maintain that freedom of expression should extend to these posts and political speech in general,” said X.

It further said, “We have notified the affected users and in the interest of transparency, we are publishing the takedown orders here. We call on the Election Commission to publish all of its takedown orders going forward.”

India, with nearly a billion eligible voters, will commence the world’s largest electoral exercise on Friday. The Lok Sabha elections will take place in seven phases between April 19 and June 1, with results to be announced on June 4.

Namma Yatri, the mobility app, on Tuesday announced the launch of cab services in Bengaluru. Addressing the prevalent issues of high commissions and lack of transparency, Namma Yatri said it is dedicated to a lifetime zero-commission, direct-to-driver model. This platform said that this strategic shift not only enhances driver income but also fosters improved vehicle maintenance and elevated customer experiences.


The platform unveiled subscription plans for cabs: free until 1 October and thereafter Rs 90 daily for unlimited rides. Namma Yatri already has 25,000 cab drivers and aims to onboard over one lakh drivers in the next six months.


“We are dedicated to empowering drivers through cutting-edge technology at an optimal cost, fostering satisfaction among both drivers and commuters,” said Magizhan Selvan, chief executive officer at Namma Yatri. “We have received strong support from the cab driver community. Our driver wellness programs, initiatives for safety and sakkath-service are adapted for the cab driver community. Ensuring driver satisfaction translates directly into providing the best service to valued customers,” added Selvan.


With this service, Namma Yatri is competing with players such as Uber and Ola, which charge some commission to the driver partners. Industry sources said Namma Yatri is following the recent trend of coming up with a zero-commission model. However, there are issues like the platform taking up less responsibility as it is a marketplace compared to Uber and Ola, which are cab aggregators. There are also issues related to bypassing local laws including state permits and moving from the organised to the unorganised sector.


Namma Yatri operates within the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) network, offering 100 per cent open data and open-source code. Namma Yatri said it takes the lead as the first app to embrace the latest Pricing Guidelines set forth by the Karnataka government. The platform said this commitment ensures fair pricing practices, eliminating unjustified surge pricing during peak hours for the benefit of customers and drivers alike.


“Their community-centric approach and pioneering efforts in driver welfare set a commendable precedent,” said Ramalinga Reddy, minister of transport and muzrai, government of Karnataka, at the launch event. “I applaud their commitment to innovation, transparency, and inclusivity, and wish them success with the cab service launch.”


The platform said that Namma Yatri’s cabs, like its autos, would prioritize transparency and efficiency. It offers cab services – Non-AC Mini, AC Mini, Sedan and XL Cab, catering to diverse customer needs. Non-AC Mini Cab, a unique addition, addresses frequent misunderstandings between drivers and customers regarding AC usage. It sets clear service expectations and competitive pricing for budget-conscious customers while promoting eco-friendly rides. The app will soon introduce inter-city, rentals, scheduled rides and open up across Karnataka. It will also accommodate special requests like disability-friendly rides, extra luggage, travelling with pets, and trips to public transport hubs.




Shaik Salauddin, elected national general secretary, The Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) said that Namma Yatri has developed a direct-to-driver, open mobility platform to empower the community and offer fair pay and mutual respect.


“It will amplify welfare schemes for gig and platform workers,” said Salauddin.

 

With its community-led approach, Namma Yatri said it is committed to fast pickups, low cancellations, affordable prices, and reliable service. As the platform continues to grow, it remains focused on fostering a sustainable and inclusive transportation ecosystem that benefits all stakeholders.


India is projected to witness a substantial growth in the Ride-hailing market in the coming years. It is estimated that the revenue in this market will rise to $6.68 billion in 2024, according to data platfrom Statista. Furthermore, the market volume is expected to reach $7.36 billion by 2028, displaying an annual growth rate of 2.45 per cent during the period of 2024-2028. As of 2028, the number of users in the ride-hailing market is predicted to be 287.40 million users, according to Statista. The user penetration rate is expected to increase from 17.6 per cent in 2024 to 19.3 per cent in 2028.


Namma Yatri’s network between commuters and drivers has resulted in over 25 million trips, Rs 420 crore in direct earnings for drivers, and a user base of 60 lakh.

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a communication protocol intended to enhance messaging experiences while maintaining compatibility with traditional SMS. It introduces features like group chats, high-resolution photo sharing, read receipts, and typing indicators, akin to those found in apps like WhatsApp or iMessage. Notably, RCS maintains backward compatibility with SMS, allowing for simple text-based messaging even without an internet connection.


Unlike SMS, which is limited in features, RCS requires an internet connection for advanced functionalities but seamlessly falls back to SMS when internet access is unavailable. This capability sets it apart from over-the-top messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger, which rely solely on internet connectivity.


RCS operates as a protocol rather than a platform, meaning it can be integrated into default messaging services without the need for separate apps or accounts. Furthermore, RCS allows for interoperability across devices with RCS support, unlike OTT apps that often operate within closed ecosystems.


In comparison to SMS/MMS, RCS offers numerous advantages such as higher text limits, media sharing in high-resolution, file sharing capabilities, group chats, read receipts, and typing indicators. These features enhance the messaging experience and bring it closer to that of modern messaging platforms.


espite its advancements, RCS does not entirely replace SMS, as it still relies on it as a fallback when internet connectivity is lacking. However, RCS adoption continues to grow, particularly among Android users, as Google provides an RCS client to network providers, enabling RCS messaging on Android devices running version 5.0 or later.


Currently, iPhones use iMessage as their default messaging system, which offers similar features but lacks interoperability with non-Apple devices. However, Apple has announced plans to support RCS Universal Profile on iPhones, allowing RCS to work alongside iMessage and expanding messaging capabilities for iPhone users.
