Withings, French medical-grade health devices maker, announces India foray

French smart health-tracking devices maker Withings has announced its India foray, bringing its range of devices such as hybrid smartwatches, connected smart scales, and blood pressure monitors to the country. The company said that these devices will make health tracking more accessible and convenient for individuals.

“At Withings, we are dedicated to democratising access to transformative health technologies,” said President and founder of Withings, Eric Carreel. “What makes us unique is our capacity to capture real-life data, as seamless as it should be. There’s no other smartwatch on the market that can track clinical biomarkers like we do with a 30-day battery life. With the launch of our products and services in India, we are thrilled to provide those unique tools and insights to empower millions of individuals to lead healthier lives.”

Withings devices: Availability

Withings devices are available in India through Luxury Personified, which is also a distributor of choice for other global premium brands such as Dyson, Sonos, Marshall, GoPro, and more. Luxury Personified offers its products through multiple retail channels including Croma, Reliance Digital, 24 Seven, and more.

Withings offerings in the Indian market

In the smartwatch category, Withings is offering its ScanWatch 2 and Scan Watch Light. Withings said that its hybrid connected watches are designed to continuously track heart rate and its fluctuations. These watches, Withings said, can conduct medical-grade electrocardiograms for early detection of various medical conditions such as atrial fibrillation, along with tracking blood oxygen levels.

Alongside smart watches, Withings is offering its Body Smart and Body Scan smart scales in India. According to Withings, these smart connected scales provide exclusive insights into parameters such as pulse wave velocity. The company said that its range of smart scales goes beyond basic body composition measurements and offers information related to users’ cardiovascular health, and warning of arterial stiffness, often associated with hypertension.

Withings also makes blood pressure monitors, but these are not part of its India portfolio since these are pending for regulatory clearances. The company said that the blood pressure monitors will be soon available in the Indian market.

Explainer: What is RCS and how is it different from SMS, MMS and OTT apps

Explainer: What is RCS and how is it different from SMS, MMS and OTT apps

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a communication protocol intended to enhance messaging experiences while maintaining compatibility with traditional SMS. It introduces features like group chats, high-resolution photo sharing, read receipts, and typing indicators, akin to those found in apps like WhatsApp or iMessage. Notably, RCS maintains backward compatibility with SMS, allowing for simple text-based messaging even without an internet connection.

Unlike SMS, which is limited in features, RCS requires an internet connection for advanced functionalities but seamlessly falls back to SMS when internet access is unavailable. This capability sets it apart from over-the-top messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger, which rely solely on internet connectivity.

RCS operates as a protocol rather than a platform, meaning it can be integrated into default messaging services without the need for separate apps or accounts. Furthermore, RCS allows for interoperability across devices with RCS support, unlike OTT apps that often operate within closed ecosystems.

In comparison to SMS/MMS, RCS offers numerous advantages such as higher text limits, media sharing in high-resolution, file sharing capabilities, group chats, read receipts, and typing indicators. These features enhance the messaging experience and bring it closer to that of modern messaging platforms.

espite its advancements, RCS does not entirely replace SMS, as it still relies on it as a fallback when internet connectivity is lacking. However, RCS adoption continues to grow, particularly among Android users, as Google provides an RCS client to network providers, enabling RCS messaging on Android devices running version 5.0 or later.

Currently, iPhones use iMessage as their default messaging system, which offers similar features but lacks interoperability with non-Apple devices. However, Apple has announced plans to support RCS Universal Profile on iPhones, allowing RCS to work alongside iMessage and expanding messaging capabilities for iPhone users.

Meta oversight board reviews handling of AI-created celebrity porn

Meta oversight board reviews handling of AI-created celebrity porn

Some industry executives have called for legislation to criminalize the creation of harmful “deep fakes” and require that tech companies prevent such uses of their products. Photo: Bloomberg

Meta Platforms’ Oversight Board is reviewing the company’s handling of two sexually explicit AI-generated images of female celebrities that circulated on its Facebook and Instagram services, the board said on Tuesday.

The board, which is funded by the social media giant but operates independently from it, will use the two examples to assess the overall effectiveness of Meta’s policies and enforcement practices around pornographic fakes created using artificial intelligence, it said in a blog post.

It provided descriptions of the images in question but did not name the famous women depicted in them in order to “prevent further harm,” a board spokesperson said.

Advances in AI technology have made fabricated images, audio clips and videos virtually indistinguishable from real human-created content, resulting in a spate of sexual fakes proliferating online, mostly depicting women and girls.

In an especially high-profile case earlier this year, Elon Musk-owned social media platform X briefly blocked users from searching for all images of U.S. pop star Taylor Swift after struggling to control the spread of fake explicit images of her.

Some industry executives have called for legislation to criminalize the creation of harmful “deep fakes” and require that tech companies prevent such uses of their products.

According to the Oversight Board’s descriptions of its cases, one involves an AI-generated image of a nude woman resembling a public figure from India, posted by an account on Instagram that only shares AI-generated images of Indian women.

The other image, the board said, appeared in a Facebook group for sharing AI creations and featured an AI-generated depiction of a nude woman resembling “an American public figure” with a man groping her breast.

Meta removed the image depicting the American woman for violating its bullying and harassment policy, which bars “derogatory sexualized photoshops or drawings,” but initially left up the one featuring the Indian woman and only reversed course after the board selected it for review.

In a separate post, Meta acknowledged the cases and pledged to implement the board’s decisions.

Apple Inc wants to boost its investment in Vietnam, state media quoted the U.S. tech giant’s CEO Tim Cook as saying in Hanoi on Tuesday, a day after the U.S. company said it wanted to increase spending on suppliers in the Southeast Asian nation.

Vietnam is already a key manufacturing hub for Apple and Cook was speaking while meeting Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, state media reported.

Vietnam will set up a working group to support Apple’s investment, Chinh told Cook during the meeting, according to state media.

“Today, Apple announced it will increase spending on suppliers in Vietnam, along with new progress in an initiative to support clean water for local schools,” the company said in a statement released on Monday on its website.

Its spending has already reached some 400 trillion dong ($15.84 billion) and has created some 200,000 jobs, the statement added.

Apple did not respond to a request for additional comments about its spending.

Cook arrived in Hanoi on Monday for the two-day visit during which he met suppliers, students, content creators and users of Apple products.

Apple manufactures iPads, AirPods and Apple Watches in Vietnam and suppliers for MacBooks are also investing in the Southeast Asian country.

The company had 25 suppliers in Vietnam as of 2022, according to its latest suppliers list, the same as in the previous year and up from 21 in 2020. These suppliers include Foxconn, GoerTek, Luxshare, Intel, Samsung Electronics and Compal.

Suppliers to its main vendors, such as Foxconn, are also moving or planning to move to Vietnam, and some are shifting some activities out of China, amid U.S.-China tensions, according to several industry sources who declined to name the companies as the moves were still confidential.

While meeting Cook, Chinh said that Vietnam was seeking support from Apple to develop renewable energy as well as in high-quality human resource training, VTV said in a report.

Apple’s latest announcement came days after activists urged the company to take action on Vietnam’s detention of climate experts.
