Piracy websites pose greater risk of malware, surpassing adult sites: Study

Piracy websites pose a higher threat of malware to Indian consumers, surpassing the risk from adult sites and gambling advertisements, a study said on Tuesday.

Accessing piracy sites carries a higher risk of malware (59 per cent) compared to the adult industry (57 per cent) and gambling advertisements (53 per cent), the study — The Piracy-Malware Nexus in India: A Perceptions and Experience and Empirical Analysis — conducted by the Indian School of Business (ISB) said.

The study is based on a survey conducted during May 23-29, 2023 among 1,037 respondents aged over 18 in India as part of the YouGov National Omnibus.

Digital piracy poses significant risks to India’s cultural outputs across various entertainment sectors, which refer to unauthorised copying, distribution, or sharing of copyrighted content, including movies, music, TV shows, books, software, and other forms of creative works, the study said.

Piracy impacts the revenue streams of the Indian entertainment industry, including losses for filmmakers, producers, artists, and other stakeholders, which is estimated by global consulting firm EY to be USD 3.08 billion in 2022.

The study further revealed that the online piracy in India remains profitable, with malware distribution serving as an additional revenue stream for piracy site operators.

Scam piracy websites also pose a greater risk of exposing users to cyber threats compared to standard piracy sites, particularly popular ones, it noted.

People aged 18-24 illustrated a higher propensity of accessing piracy websites, yet they also demonstrated the lowest levels of awareness of cyber risk, the study found.

“There is a need for a three-pronged approach to deal with the menace: Regulation, Education and Detection (RED). This should include stringent laws and regulations to punish the culprits; educate masses about the threat of using pirated stuff; and use of technology to detect and block these websites,” noted Professor Manish Gangwar, Executive Director, ISB Institute of Data Science, and co-author of the study.

The study also recommended the government placing a higher priority on digital copyright crimes and enforcement, and taking firm action against the largest piracy syndicates.

Meta Platforms has offered to almost halve its monthly subscription fee for Facebook and Instagram to 5.99 euros from 9.99 euros following discussions with privacy regulators, a senior Meta executive said on Tuesday.

The move came amid mounting criticism from users about Meta’s no-ads subscription service launched in Europe in November which critics say requires users to pay a fee to ensure their privacy.

Meta launched the service to comply with the Digital Markets Act which curbs its ability to personalise ads for users without their consent, hurting its major revenue source.

“We have wanted to accelerate that process for some time because we need to get to a steady state…so we have offered to drop the price from 9.99 to 5.99 for a single account and 4 euros for any additional accounts,” Meta lawyer Tim Lamb told a European Commission hearing.

Meta made the reduced offer to regulators earlier this year and is now in talks with data protection authorities, specifically the Irish watchdog, on the issue.

Users, who consent to be tracked, get a free service which is funded by advertising revenues.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) signed a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi to foster research initiatives through collaborative projects, training programs, and research consultancy.

“This collaboration underscores IAI’s firm commitment to corporate social responsibility within India, resonating with the country’s ethos of self-reliance,” Avital Schrift, VP Core Tech at IAI told The Press Service of Israel.

“It was a match made in heaven from different perspectives,” Schrift said.

“For instance, we will be promoting the technology that Professor Chetan Arora from the Institute’s Computer Science and Engineering Department focuses on. He researches the field of computer vision, an area that IAI has been sponsoring for a while. During our discussions we found out that he was a postdoctoral researcher with Hebrew University in Jerusalem, so it was another delightful sign of a successful continuation of collaborations.”

The government-owned IAI specializes in providing state-of-the-art systems for air, ground, sea, space, and cyberspace applications.

IIT Delhi is one of 23 institutes across India created to be Centers of Excellence for training, research and development in science, engineering and technology.

“We are excited about this partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries, a global leader in aerospace. This collaboration aligns with IIT Delhi’s commitment to cutting-edge research and technological advancements,” said Professor Preeti Ranjan Panda, IIT Delhi’s Dean Corporate Relations.

“Together with IAI, we aim to contribute significantly to the future of technology in India,” he added.

As part of its operations in India, IAI is mandated to allocate funds towards social responsibility, which led to the collaboration.

“My job is to watch out for new emerging technologies coming out. In my opinion, the best place to look for is the academy,” Schrift explained. “We are doing many collaborative researches with most institutes in Israel and also working with such in India, United States, and lately also in Rabat, Morocco. We are trying not only to look for innovations in technology in Israel, but also outside.”

Schrift added, “We are very proud of the fact that we can work with those researchers and to communicate with them and share the knowledge, while taking their knowledge and translating it into new technologies.
