With ChatGPT and now Sora, Sam Altman-led OpenAI has disrupted the tech world with the use of artificial intelligence. Its GPT-4 is currently deemed the world’s most powerful large language model (LLM). It also has support from one of the biggest tech giants, Microsoft.


Now, a French startup is trying to mount a challenge to OpenAI.

Mistral AI was started by three French former researchers from Google and Meta – Chief Executive Officer Arthur Mensch, Chief Scientist Guillaume Lample and Chief Technology Officer Timothee Lacroix.


On February 26, Mistral AI announced the launch of its new LLM, Mistral-Large. According to a report by The Economist, this LLM is smaller than GPT-4 in terms of the number of parameters it uses, but it rivals OpenAI’s model in performance.


Mistral also announced a partnership with Microsoft, where the Redmond-based company will make the French startup’s artificial intelligence models available through its Azure cloud computing platform. Microsoft described Mistral AI as “an innovator and trailblazer”.


Mistral also released a public test version of its own chatbot, called Le Chat.


Mistral made a big splash by attracting big amounts of investor funding to give it a multibillion-dollar valuation just months after it was founded last spring. Its open-source approach to developing AI means it publicly releases key components of its models, in contrast to companies such as OpenAI, which closely guard them.


It has attracted investments from big investors, including leading Silicon Valley venture capitalists such as Andreessen Horowitz and General Catalyst, as well as Eric Schmidt, a former chief executive of Google.


According to The Economist, Mistral AI’s success now depends on a number of factors. First is whether it will be able to generate meaningful revenue. Second is how the world will regulate open-source models. And the third is how it will stand against the next model revealed by OpenAI.

Nothing is slated to launch the Phone 2a in India on March 5. Ahead of the launch, the British consumer technology startup runs a virtual unboxing video, which reveals the smartphone’s design and Glyph interface. Available on Nothing official handle on X (formerly Twitter), the virtual unboxing video highlights the horizontal camera island and transparent back cover on the rear.


The Nothing Phone 2a back panel appears to be following the design language from the company’s previous smartphones. The smartphone appears to have a transparent back glass, showcasing certain elements from the inside of the smartphone. However, the biggest change is the horizontally placed dual-camera setup, which is aligned centrally.


For reference, the Phone 2a camera placement is unlike the Nothing Phone (1) and Phone (2). Both these smartphones had vertically placed camera modules towards the top-left side.


The video also confirms that the Nothing Phone (2a) will have the Glyph interface with light bars around the camera module. The frame also looks like it has a matte texture rather than a shiny metal finish.

The Nothing Phone (2a) is set to launch in India on March 5 in an in-person launch event at Dwarka, Delhi. The company is selling tickets for the launch event that are available on PayTM Insider for Rs 999.


Nothing Phone (2a): Specification


In a run up to the launch, Nothing has confirmed several key specification details for the Phone (2a). The company previously announced that the smartphone will be powered by a custom-built MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset accompanied by 12GB RAM. The smartphone will feature 8GB virtual RAM that Nothing calls “RAM Booster”.


The MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro powering the Phone (2a) is based on TSMC’s latest second-generation 4nm process technology. According to the company, the chip has 8-core configuration with clocking speeds up to 2.8 GHz.


According to media reports, the Phone (2a) will feature a 50MP Samsung S5KGN9 1/1.5-inch main sensor alongside a 50MP Samsung S5KJN1 1/2.76-inch ultra-wide-angle sensor at the back. On the front, the Nothing Phone (2a) will likely get a 32MP Sony IMX615 camera sensor.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape the world of work, 94 per cent of companies in India plan to enhance their employees’ skills and abilities this year, according to LinkedIn’s latest “Workplace Learning Report”.


The report highlights upskilling employees, aligning learning programs with business goals, and creating a culture of learning as the top three focus areas for India’s learning and development (L&D) professionals in 2024.


Soft skills take centre stage, with nine in ten L&D professionals prioritising human skills. The report reveals that 91 per cent of L&D professionals in India view human skills as increasingly competitive in the economy. ‘Communication’ has topped LinkedIn’s most in-demand skills list in 2024 across all countries in the Asia Pacific, including India. Soft skills like critical thinking and problem-solving are among the top five skills that hiring managers in India consider the most important in the AI era.


Ruchee Anand, senior director of Talent, Learning, and Engagement Solutions at LinkedIn India, said, “Last year, we saw a 21x surge in job postings mentioning ChatGPT or GPT on LinkedIn, reflecting the growing demand for tech skills as businesses explored AI. This year, we are seeing a pronounced shift towards skills – both technical and soft skills – to thrive in the era of AI. With skills for jobs globally expected to change by 68 per cent by 2030, we are seeing a greater emphasis on learning both technical and soft skills, with a majority of employers surveyed agreeing that this balance will be critical for organisations to succeed in the age of AI.”


L&D professionals are keen on investing in a culture of continuous learning. Companies in India are focusing on enhancing employees’ skills for greater confidence and job security by offering online training and development programmes (53 per cent) and providing opportunities for hands-on experimentation with Gen AI tools (54 per cent).


This soaring focus on creating a culture of learning will lead to increased investments in learning opportunities. In fact, 96 per cent of L&D professionals in India said they can show business value by helping employees gain skills to move into different internal roles.


The LinkedIn report highlights that 48 per cent of India’s hiring managers are providing career progression opportunities to their existing employees. They also believe that “helping employees build the skills needed for the future of work” (38 per cent) and “providing competitive salary and benefits” (31 per cent) are key to retaining top talent.


Additionally, India’s hiring managers believe that highlighting career advancement opportunities (59 per cent) and ‘increasing internal mobility’ (51 per cent) are crucial to attracting top talent.


To assist companies in taking a skills-first approach to achieving their L&D and talent goals, LinkedIn has introduced innovative AI-powered tools such as Recruiter 2024, which enables hirers to quickly access high-quality candidate recommendations by using natural language search prompts and rich data, ensuring they are able to shortlist talent based on the skills they need. These features will be available to all of LinkedIn’s Asia Pacific customers in English-speaking markets from the end of February.


To help companies build the skills they need for the next decade of work, LinkedIn has launched LinkedIn Learning, a chatbot experience that offers real-time advice and tailored content recommendations. This is currently available to APAC customers in English-speaking markets.


In early March, LinkedIn will be launching new career development and internal mobility features within LinkedIn Learning to help guide employees to critical skills, develop skills that matter to grow, and connect to the best-fit opportunity at their organisation. This will be available in English, Hindi, Japanese, Indonesian, and Malay, among others.

OnePlus launched the Watch 2 on February 26 in a global event held at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, US. OnePlus Watch 2: Specifications


The OnePlus Watch 2 boasts a dual-engine architecture, powered by dual chipsets – Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 and BES 2700 MCU efficiency chip. OnePlus said the dual-engine architecture boosts battery life by diverting performance tasks to the main Qualcomm chip and leaving efficiency tasks for the secondary BES 2700 to handle. According to OnePlus, the Watch 2’s 500mAh battery is capable of returning up to 100-hour battery life on a single charge in Smart Mode and up to 48 hours of heavy usage.


Based on Google WearOS 4 operating system, the smartwatch supports Google apps such as Maps, Assistant, and more. The Indian version of the Watch 2, however, lacks support for Google Pay and Wallet services, confirmed the company. The Watch 2 has 2GB RAM and 32GB on-board storage.

The US Consulate, in collaboration with the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), launched the first-ever US-India Cyber Security Initiative to strengthen IT connections between the two countries.

US Consul General Mike Hankey, who was in Pune at the MCCIA Pune Business International Business Summit on Monday, said the initiative aims to unite top cyber security experts globally to create jobs and develop cutting-edge solutions. The initiative will lead the city into a mentorship model in cyber space and will also foster people-to-people ties in cyberspace, he said.

The launch is timely, since digital technologies are advancing more rapidly than at any previous point in human history, he added. Hankey emphasized that a secure, resilient, and stable cyberspace is crucial for the development of both the public and private sectors, enabling people worldwide to benefit from the free flow of information online.

“Cyber issues are a priority in the U.S.-India bilateral relationship. The challenge facing the United States and India is how to minimize cybersecurity threats and ensure the digital revolution promotes global prosperity and stability,” he said.

“We are witnessing extraordinary transformations in artificial intelligence, advanced telecommunications, critical and emerging technologies, bioengineering, and energy,” CG Hankey said while addressing the media after the event. The Cybersecurity Initiative symbolizes the close collaboration between the United States and India, and these advancements also offer economic and social benefits globally, ensuring cybersecurity in the growing digital domain remains a vital concern, Hankey said.

The centre’s work will involve collaborating with research institutions, industry, and civil society to enhance cyber defences and infrastructure and protect sensitive information, he said. “We are proud to partner with MCCIA in launching this US-India Cyber Security Initiative with the aim of building secure and prosperous IT connections between our countries.

This reflects our shared vision for a world that is open, secure, and prosperous,” he concluded. MCCIA Director General Prashant Girbane stated the Initiative’s strategic importance for citizens, businesses, and governments. Hankey in his address at the summit said that the world is observing extraordinary transformations in artificial intelligence, advanced telecommunications, critical and emerging technologies, bioengineering, and energy.

Google plans to relaunch its AI tool that creates images of people, which it paused last week after inaccuracies in some historical depictions, in the next few weeks, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said on Monday.


Alphabet’s Google began offering image generation through its Gemini AI models earlier this month. Some users, however, flagged on social media that it generated historical images which were sometimes inaccurate.

 


“We have taken the feature offline while we fix that. We are hoping to have that back online very shortly in the next couple of weeks, few weeks”, Hassabis said in a panel in the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

 


The tool was not “working the way we intended”, he added.

 


Since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, Google has been racing to produce AI software to rival that of the Microsoft-backed company.

 


When Google released its generative AI chatbot Bard a year ago, it had shared inaccurate information about pictures of a planet outside the Earth’s solar system in a promotional video, causing its shares to drop by as much as 9%.
