Google plans to relaunch its AI tool that creates images of people, which it paused last week after inaccuracies in some historical depictions, in the next few weeks, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said on Monday.

Alphabet’s Google began offering image generation through its Gemini AI models earlier this month. Some users, however, flagged on social media that it generated historical images which were sometimes inaccurate.

“We have taken the feature offline while we fix that. We are hoping to have that back online very shortly in the next couple of weeks, few weeks”, Hassabis said in a panel in the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The tool was not “working the way we intended”, he added.

Since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022, Google has been racing to produce AI software to rival that of the Microsoft-backed company.

When Google released its generative AI chatbot Bard a year ago, it had shared inaccurate information about pictures of a planet outside the Earth’s solar system in a promotional video, causing its shares to drop by as much as 9%.

Bard was renamed Gemini earlier this month and Google rolled out paid subscription plans, which users could choose for better reasoning capabilities from the AI model.

Microsoft signs multi-year deal with OpenAI's French rival Mistral | Tech News – Business Standard

Microsoft signs multi-year deal with OpenAI's French rival Mistral | Tech News – Business Standard

Microsoft will make French startup Mistral AI’s artificial intelligence models available through its Azure cloud computing platform under a new partnership, the companies said on Monday.

The multi-year deal signals Microsoft’s efforts to offer a variety of AI models beyond its biggest bet in OpenAI as the tech giant seeks to attract more customers for its Azure cloud services.

As part of the announcement, Microsoft will take a minority stake in the Mistral AI, the startup confirmed to Reuters without disclosing details.

The Paris-based startup works on open source and proprietary large language models (LLM), similar to the one OpenAI pioneered with ChatGPT, that understands and generates text in a human-like fashion.

Mistral’s latest model, Mistral Large, will be first available to Azure customers as part of the partnership. Azure customers will be able to use several AI models from Mistral, which will also see its technology hosted on Microsoft’s cloud computing platform.

Mistral has also been working with Amazon and Google to distribute its models. The company plans to make Mistral Large available on other cloud platforms in the next few months, according to a spokesperson.

The Paris-based firm was founded by Timothée Lacroix and Guillaume Lample, who previously worked at Meta’s artificial intelligence teams, and Arthur Mensch, who was a researcher at Google’s DeepMind.

PhonePe's Indus Appstore surpasses 100,000 downloads in 3 days of launch | Start Ups – Business Standard

PhonePe's Indus Appstore surpasses 100,000 downloads in 3 days of launch | Start Ups – Business Standard

Indus Appstore was launched by IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on February 21, 2024 in New Delhi

Indus Appstore — the new Android-based made-in-India app store that is pitted against the might of Google’s Play Store — has surpassed 100,000 downloads in just three days of launch, according to a release on Monday.

App developers, tech enthusiasts, and users have actively downloaded the app, recognising the potential impact of Indus Appstore on India’s digital ecosystem, the release said.

Last week, PhonePe, owned by Walmart Inc, had launched the mobile app marketplace — Indus Appstore — to challenge Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

“Indus Appstore, India’s revolutionary new Android-based app store from PhonePe, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 100,000 downloads in just three days of launch,” it said.

The “remarkable feat”, the release said, underscores the Indian market’s eagerness for a localised, inclusive, and developer-empowering alternative to existing app stores.

Akash Dongre, Chief Product Officer and Co-Founder of Indus Appstore, said, “We are thrilled and humbled by the overwhelming response to the Indus Appstore.”

Reaching over a lakh downloads in just three days confirms that India is ready for a homegrown app store that prioritises the needs of its diverse users and fosters a vibrant developer community, Dongre said.

This is only the beginning, Dongre said, adding, “we’re committed to continuously evolving Indus Appstore to make it the go-to destination for apps in India”.

Indus Appstore was launched by IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on February 21, 2024 in New Delhi.

“PhonePe’s Indus Appstore is aiming to reach an install base of 500,000 users as soon as possible, with one million downloads expected shortly after,” it said, adding that the ambitious trajectory reflects the company’s confidence in Indus Appstore’s unique value proposition and its potential to redefine India’s digital landscape.

Bhavish Aggarwal's Krutrim rolls out OpenAI's ChatGPT rival in beta mode | Tech News – Business Standard

Bhavish Aggarwal's Krutrim rolls out OpenAI's ChatGPT rival in beta mode | Tech News – Business Standard

Bhavish Aggarwal’s newest venture, Krutrim, is finally available for the public beta. The AI chatbot, which works similarly to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is available in two languages—English and Hindi.

Bhavish Aggarwal in a post on X announced the public beta rollout. “As promised, starting the @Krutrim AI public beta rollout today. This is a start for us and our first-generation product. Lots more to come and this will also improve significantly as we build on this base. Do give us your feedback,” he wrote.

Aggarwal also added that while some hallucinations will be there, they will be much lower for Indian contexts than other global platforms. “And we will be working overtime to find and fix! We’ve rooted Krutrim strongly in Indian values and data with over 10+ Indian languages and ready to assist in English, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Gujarati and even Hinglish!,” he added.

“Krutrim marks the dawn of a new era in the AI computing stack for our nation,” said Aggarwal. “We will aim to innovate alongside the world and define future paradigms,” he claimed.

Krutrim, meaning “artificial” in Sanskrit, was launched in April 2023. In January this year, the company raised its first round of funding of $50 million at a valuation of $1 billion. The funding round was led by prominent investors such as Matrix Partners India and others.

Users who want to test Krutrim can log in by using their phone numbers.

When compared to ChatGPT on some random queries, Krutrim gives similar results. To the question ‘Origin of Yoga,’ while both ChatGPT and Krutrim give similar responses, ChatGPT provides more detailed responses than the latter. However, both the responses cover all the points.

However, for a text and numerical query, Krutrim is unable to give the answer. For the query ‘what is the date today?’ Krutrim’s response was, “As an AI language model, I am unable to provide real-time information such as the current date. However, I can help you understand how to find the current date.”

The same query in ChatGPT gives the correct date.

Meanwhile, many responded to Aggarwal’s post on X by testing Krutrim. Arvin Gupta, former Chief Executive Officer of MyGov, in a post on X said: “Just starting using @OlaKrutrim and getting better results than @ChatGPTapp. Long way to go @bhash but a great start in building LLM/AI for India-Bharat.”

During the announcement of the fundraise, Aggarwal had said, “India has to build its own AI, and at Krutrim we are fully committed to building the country’s first complete AI computing stack.”

Krutrim unveiled its base Large Language Model (LLM) in December. With the largest representation of Indian data used for its training, it powers generative AI applications for all Indian languages. Trained by a team of leading computer scientists, based in Bangalore and San Francisco, this model will also power Krutrim’s conversational AI assistant that understands and speaks multiple Indian languages fluently.

Krutrim is a family of Large Language Models, including Krutrim base and Krutrim Pro, which will have multimodal, larger knowledge capabilities, and many other technical advancements for inference. Krutrim is trained on over 2 trillion tokens.

Truecaller launches premium AI-powered call recording feature in India | Apps – Business Standard

Swedish caller identification app Truecaller on Monday announced the launch of AI-powered call recording feature in India that offers transcription and call summary.

AI call recording is a paid feature, and will be available with a Truecaller Premium subscription, the company said, adding that it works seamlessly across both Android and iOS devices.

The new addition provides users with the ability to record incoming and outgoing calls directly within the Truecaller app. This offers a convenient and efficient way to capture and manage important conversations.

Announcing the launch of AI-enabled call recording feature, a company release said that by leveraging Artificial Intelligence technology, Truecaller empowers users to fully engage in their live conversation without the need to be concerned about taking detailed notes, thus improving productivity during calls.

“The integration of AI into the newly launched call recording feature marks a significant leap forward, allowing for a detailed transcription of the entire phone call, along with an AI-generated call summary,” the release said, adding, “you can record and transcribe all calls, in English and Hindi, from any caller.”

Truecaller said the AI-powered call recording solution will be available as a part of the brand’s premium plan, starting at Rs 75 per month, or Rs 529 per year.

Truecaller Managing Director and Chief Product Officer Rishit Jhunjhunwala said the latest move gives customers greater control and flexibility in managing their conversations.

“We are constantly innovating cutting-edge solutions that enhance communication. As we continue to push these boundaries, we are thrilled to announce our AI-enabled call recording solution, which has always been a highly requested user feature,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention that on Friday, sector regulator Trai released its recommendation on the introduction of CNAP Supplementary Service for caller name display on phones.

The company had then said given its technology and AI capabilities, “Truecaller goes beyond just providing a basic number identification service”.

Truecaller had further said it extends support to Trai and remains “very appreciative of this and any future initiatives”.

“With regards to CNAP, we do not see that it would be a competitive service comparable to the full range of services and functionality that Truecaller offers to our more than 374 million users,” Truecaller had said.
