FBI, UK crime agency disrupt Lockbit's website used for ransomware payments | Tech News – Business Standard

FBI, UK crime agency disrupt Lockbit's website used for ransomware payments | Tech News – Business Standard

By Jamie Tarabay

A coalition of international law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and UK National Crime Agency, said they have disrupted LockBit, one of the most prolific hacker groups of all time, including shutting down websites the organization used for ransomware payments.

A post on the gang’s website Monday said it’s “now under the control” of the UK agency, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement from 11 different countries took part in the operation, which seized 11,000 domains used by LockBit and its affiliates to facilitate ransomware, an FBI official said. The operation, which disrupted LockBit’s infrastructure and targeted its malware deployment system, took place in recent days, the official said.

LockBit specializes in using malicious software known as ransomware to encrypt files on its victims’ computers, then demanding payment to unlock the files. The operation recruits hackers to conduct the cyberattacks using LockBit’s tools and infrastructure. LockBit gets a cut of any ransom extorted in the hacks.

The group was responsible for last year’s attack on the US arm of Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd., which disrupted the $26 billion US Treasury market. It also took down a website that Boeing Co. uses to sell spare aircraft parts, software and services.

LockBit first came to prominence in 2021, calling itself LockBit 1.0. In 2022, it became LockBit 2.0 and its latest iteration is LockBit Green. One of the group’s most recent victims was EquilLend. The trading platform, which processes trillions of dollars of transactions a month, said the incident on Jan. 22 affected some automated securities lending services.

The hacking group has claimed 1,600 victims in the US and 2,000 internationally, according to the FBI. A good majority are within the private sector, and the FBI said it’s tracking 144 million ransoms paid in relation to LockBit attacks.

Meta to introduce a fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp to fight deepfakes | Company News – Business Standard

Meta to introduce a fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp to fight deepfakes | Company News – Business Standard

The Misinformation Combat Alliance (MCA) and Meta on Monday announced a collaboration towards launching a fact-checking helpline on WhatsApp to tackle Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated deepfakes.

The helpline, which is expected to be available for public use in March this year, will allow users to flag deepfakes by sending them to a dedicated WhatsApp chatbot.

The chatbot will offer multilingual support in English and three regional languages including Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, said Meta.

“We recognise the concerns around AI-generated misinformation and believe combatting this requires concrete and cooperative measures across the industry,” said Shivnath Thukral, director, Public Policy India, Meta.

“Our collaboration with MCA to launch a WhatsApp helpline dedicated to debunking deepfakes that can materially deceive people is consistent with our pledge under the Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections,” added Thukral.

Last week, a group of 20 leading tech companies across the globe including Microsoft, Meta, Google, Amazon, IBM, signed an accord to combat AI misinformation ahead of the 2024 elections.

In November last year, the Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Ashwini Vaishnaw had stressed on watermarking and labelling of content as an approach to tackle deepfakes, after holding two rounds of discussions with intermediaries on the issue of deepfakes and misinformation.

The Minister had said that though watermarking and labelling were the basic requirements, many miscreants had found a way to go around them.

The Indian government has also said that it will bring stringent provisions to deal with deepfakes under IT rules, 2021 through a fresh amendment.

As a part of the collaboration with Meta in India, MCA will set up a central ‘deepfake analysis unit’ to manage all inbound messages they receive on the WhatsApp helpline.

Further, it will work closely with other member fact-checking organisations as well as industry partners and digital labs to assess and verify the content and respond to the messages accordingly, quashing false claims and misinformation, according to a press release.

“The Deepfakes Analysis Unit (DAU) will serve as a critical and timely intervention to arrest the spread of AI-enabled disinformation among social media and internet users in India,” said Bharat Gupta, president, Misinformation Combat Alliance.

“The initiative will see International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) signatory fact-checkers, journalists, civic tech professionals, research labs and forensic experts come together, with Meta’s support,” he added.

The program will follow a four-pillar approach including detection, prevention, reporting and driving awareness, in order to stop the spread of deepfakes, said a press release.

Early this month, the social media giant also announced an ‘AI labelling policy’, where it plans to collaborate with other industry partners and develop ‘common technical standards’ that will help in tagging AI generated content.

“Since AI-generated content appears across the internet, we’ve been working with other companies in our industry to develop common standards for identifying it through forums like the Partnership on AI (PAI),” said the company in a blog post.

Meta, which owns large social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, had also introduced a fact-checking programme in India in partnership with 11 independent partners, in the year 2022.

iPhone alert to MPs: Apple's reply on vulnerability not clear, says MoS IT | India News – Business Standard

iPhone alert to MPs: Apple's reply on vulnerability not clear, says MoS IT | India News – Business Standard

The government is fully committed to ensuring that internet is safe and trusted, the minister said

The government is still waiting for a clear reply from iPhone maker Apple on iPhone alert sent to opposition political leaders around five months back on alleged hacking of their devices by state-backed hackers.

In an interview to PTI, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the government has asked Apple two questions: whether their devices are safe, and if so the reason for the alert was sent to opposition members.

“In my humble opinion, this is not something that any proprietary platform will completely concede whether they have vulnerabilities in their platform. There’s an instinct in any platform to deny that vulnerability exists,” he said.

“We are asking a clear question, is your phone vulnerable? The answer to that is not totally unambiguous,” Chandrasekhar said.

In October, several opposition leaders claimed they have received an alert from Apple warning them of state-sponsored attackers trying to remotely compromise” their iPhones and alleged hacking by the government.

Among those who received the threat notification on their iPhones were Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, party leaders Shashi Tharoor, Pawan Khera, K C Venugopal, Supriya Shrinate, T S Singhdeo, and Bhupinder S Hooda.

Trinamool Congress’ Mahua Moitra, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, and Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Aam Aadmi Party’s Raghav Chadha, AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi and some aides of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also received the notification.

“Allegations when they were made, on that particular day we said very clearly this is for Apple to answer because it involves their device. We certainly have no R&D (research and development) capability in the government to understand what is in the iOS and what is not, and certainly Apple is not going to tell us its proprietary technology. So we called them,” Chandrasekhar said.

He said that CERT-In has made them party to the investigation.

“They have given a number of clarifications, including on the same day that this has nothing to do with the state actor. But we pressed them further that if it has nothing to do with the state actor, then what is this notification? They have given us some clarification. They continue to… but CERT is continuing their investigation,” the minister said.

An email query sent to Apple elicited no reply in this regard.

Chandrasekhar rejected allegations that the government in any way is trying to transgress privacy of people or muzzle freedom of speech and expression.

“We are absolutely clear that nothing we say in any rules, nothing we say in any law will ever transgress into or interfere with the fundamental rights of any of our citizens. As a matter of fact we support it,” he said.

The government is fully committed to ensuring that internet is safe and trusted, the minister said.

He said some people take the view that free speech is an absolute right and it has to be protected which may be true for the US but the Indian constitution has reasonable restrictions on it.

“There are restrictions to it that you cannot say anything that is illegal, unlawful or against national security. There is a fundamental right to free speech.

“Fundamental right to free speech does not mean you have a fundamental right to lie, or provoke or create public order disturbances because you are inciting violence,” the minister said.

There is a group of people who constantly allege censorship by government, he said, adding that the government is fully focussed on protecting the fundamental rights of citizens.

“There are some bad guys and there are some good guys in this battle for free speech. If there is any good guy in this, it is us, the government of India. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi it is very clear… We are trustees to protect the fundamental right of every one of our citizens,” the minister said.

He said allegations on government transgressing privacy or curtailing free speech are mostly politically driven.

“When they have a doubt, and they can sit and discuss… they quickly get convinced that we are absolutely on the right track,” the minister said.

In response to controversy around the PIB Fact Check unit, that flags misinformation or false information pertaining to the government, Chandrasekhar said the fact check unit is not any form of censorship but rather a tool to help platforms that are dealing with disputed government information.

“When the fact check unit says this is right or this is wrong, all platforms have to do is label it. Now there is nothing in that, that is censorship. But some people have characterised that, specifically editors guild, etc, who are looking for a cause to hang their hat on,” Chandrasekhar said.

Editors’ Guild of India has challenged the amendments to IT Rules 2021 in June.

The guild has alleged that “amendments to the IT Rules will have deeply adverse implications for press freedom in the country”.

The minister said the government wants to have a lesser role to be arbiter of disputes between consumers and the platforms.

“We had a situation in 2021, with every dispute between a consumer and a social media platform getting referred to us. We want platforms to be accountable under law, to the consumers’ grievances.

“We want consumers to have the process of going to an independent regulator or to the court to have their dispute with the platform sorted not to the government,” the minister said.

Samsung 2024 fold-style foldable may get S24 Ultra's 200MP camera: Report | Tech News – Business Standard

Representative Image: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5

Samsung is reportedly planning to incorporate a 200MP primary camera sensor on its upcoming foldable smartphone. According to a report by Android Authority, the South Korean tech giant is working on integrating the main camera sensor from its flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra and S23 Ultra to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6.

The current generation Galaxy Z Fold smartphone comes with a 50 MP primary camera. A 200MP sensor on the next-generation foldable will be a big change for the series. The report stated that Samsung has recently taken a conservative approach to its high-end phones, making smaller changes and refinements to its more expensive smartphones. However, adding a flagship-grade camera system to its foldable lineup might help the company bridge the gap with its traditional flagship smartphones. Additionally, incorporating big changes would also help Samsung to differentiate the Galaxy Z fold series from a more affordable foldable smartphone that is reportedly under work.

Earlier, it was reported that Samsung is working on an affordable foldable device, which would likely arrive with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 launch. According to media reports, the cost-effective foldable smartphone would launch under the Galaxy A-series.

According to a report by WinFuture, a new model with the tag “Q6A” has appeared on Samsung’s Southeast Asian suppliers databases that have been producing components for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 (Q6) and Galaxy Z Flip 6 (B6). The report stated that the term “A” in the internal code name for the device indicates that the more affordable variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be incorporated into Samsung’s Galaxy A-Series.
