As AI shifts tech globally, it's India's time to shine: Microsoft's Chandok

In the big transformation artificial intelligence (AI) is creating across the globe, India will be one of the largest contributors to it and also one of the major beneficiaries, according to Puneet Chandok, president (India and South Asia), Microsoft.

“AI is a massive platform shift. It’s a defining technology shift for a lifetime. The impact it will have on our lives is incredible. I want all of us to be unstoppable and that can happen only when you start learning, start working, unlock productivity, and shake up the organisation.”

Chandok was talking at Microsoft’s first ever edition of its global AI Tour in India, which more than 3,000 attended.

While talking about the advantages India has when it comes to AI, he divided them into three segments.

“On the demand side, India has 100,000 startups, but we have 100 new startups coming in India every day and they need technology and AI.”

On the supply side, Chandok said every sixth AI developer, researcher, and builder was from India.

“Thirdly, roughly 16 per cent of incremental global GDP will be driven by India.”

He added though AI had been around for over 30 years, it had acquired impressive capabilities that extended beyond conversation. The advanced technology can now comprehend the human context and engage in reasoning not only with text but also with images or pictures.

“There are two fundamental shifts happening with AI — the first is the natural user interface and the second is the reasoning, which is powerful,” he added.

Chandok said organisations could no longer be fence-sitters.

“I still see a lot of organisations which just dip their toes. Do not wait for this technology to evolve, it keeps evolving every day,” he added.

“We are committed to implementing and integrating AI into various industries. It is a significant responsibility to have several customers relying on us for their AI needs,” said Chandok.

According to a recent report commissioned by Microsoft, for every dollar a company invests in AI, it realises an average return of $3.50. Infusing AI into every layer of the tech stack is delivering real productivity gains for organisations, amplifying human ingenuity, and reducing digital debt, said the company.

Ahmed Mazhari, president, Microsoft Asia, said: “We are in the midst of biggest and most innovative developments that tech has experienced over several decades. The pace of diffusion of this technology is unprecedented and we are confident that AI will touch every facet of our lives in 2024.”

Mark Zuckerberg to defend Meta's impact on teens before senate committee

Mark Zuckerberg to defend Meta's impact on teens before senate committee

By Aisha Counts

Meta Platforms Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, who is set to testify before the US Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, plans to push back on the idea that social media apps have a negative impact on young people’s mental health.

Zuckerberg will defend his company’s child safety practices and focus on the benefits of using Facebook and Instagram, the popular apps owned by Meta, according to his prepared remarks released ahead of the hearing at 10 a.m. Washington time. He’ll ask lawmakers to pursue legislation that implements a system for age verification and parental controls, and advocate for industry standards for age-appropriate content.

“Teens do amazing things on our services,” Zuckerberg is expected to say, according to prepared testimony shared with the committee. “They use our apps to feel more connected, informed and entertained, as well as to express themselves, create things, and explore their interests. Overall, teens tell us this is a positive part of their lives.”

Zuckerberg also will emphasize Meta’s investments in child safety, and willingness to work alongside parents and lawmakers. The company has about 40,000 people currently working on safety and security, and has spent more than $20 billion on those efforts since 2016, according to the remarks.

“We want teens to have safe, age-appropriate experiences on our apps, and we want to help parents manage those experiences,” Zuckerberg’s statement reads. “That’s why in the last 8 years we’ve introduced more than 30 different tools, resources, and features to help parents and teens.”

The Senate hearing, which is focused on child safety online, also includes the leaders of ByteDance Ltd.’s TikTok, X, Discord Inc. and Snap Inc. and will be available to watch here.

According to his own prepared remarks, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel plans to focus on work his Snapchat app has done to combat potential extortion, distribution of child sexual abuse material and illicit drugs.

AI robot startup Figure in talks for funding round led by Microsoft, OpenAI

AI robot startup Figure in talks for funding round led by Microsoft, OpenAI

Figure 01 humanoid robot by Figure AI

US-based startup Figure AI, specialising in humanoid robots, is reportedly in discussion with Microsoft and OpenAI to lead a funding round to secure $500 million. According to a Bloomberg report, Microsoft is expected to invest approximately $95 million, with OpenAI contributing around $5 million.

Bloomberg indicates that if the deal is finalised, Figure AI would be valued at approximately $1.9 billion, excluding the funding. Depending on the total funds raised, the startup’s value post-investment could experience a significant surge, potentially elevating it to unicorn status for the second time. The report notes that the funding round is yet to be concluded, and the investment amounts are subject to change, or the deal may even unravel.

Internally dubbed Figure 01, Figure AI is actively developing a humanoid robot designed to undertake hazardous tasks unsuitable for humans, addressing labour shortages in the process.

In a recent development, 1X Technologies, a Norwegian robotics startup also backed by OpenAI, raised $100 million in funding earlier this month. This may suggest a strategic shift towards AI-powered robots from software-oriented AI systems for OpenAI, which made waves in the global technology landscape last year with its AI chatbot, ChatGPT.

PayPal to lay off around 2500 employees to 'right-size' the company

PayPal to lay off around 2500 employees to 'right-size' the company

The layoff cycle continues as several tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and eBay continue to give pink slips to their employees. Now payment industry giant PayPal has joined the trend by announcing a reduction in its global workforce by 9 per cent (2500 employees).

PayPal CEO Alex Chriss shared an internal memo to its employees mentioning that the company wants to “right-size its business, driving more focus and efficiency.” This layoff will affect the existing staff of the company and the new positions the company planned to fill.

PayPal CEO also mentioned in its internal memo that the affected staff will be notified by the end of the week.

The development comes soon after PayPal announced that it doubled down on Artificial intelligence by enabling faster checkout, AI-powered merchant recommendations and more.

CEO Alex Chriss called it the ‘next chapter’ in the journey of PayPal.

Last year, the company underwent the same situation and announced to lay off 2000 people, consisting of 7 per cent of its staff due to a challenging macro-economic environment. After announcing to reduce 2500 more employees now, the total layoffs surge to 4500.

As per reports, PayPal’s decision to lay off its employees is followed by declining revenue and share performance. The earnings of the payment giant have fallen, dropping its share by 20 per cent in the past year.

Chriss joined PayPal as CEO last year from software company Intuit, replacing Dan Schulman.

The layoff trend is spread across the world, and the tech industry has witnessed the most number of jobs cut. As per layoffs.fyi, over 100 tech companies laid off employees in the first month of 2024.

Tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce and TikTok have laid off around 25000 employees as cost-cutting and restructuring strategies.

Google started this recent trend, by cutting over a thousand jobs followed by Amazon, which laid off 500 employees at Twitch and a hundred more at Amazon Prime.

Microsoft is also not behind the race, and the tech giant has sent home some 1,900 workers from Activision Blizzard and Xbox. Apart from these, many other companies, such as Flipkart and Swiggy, announced layoffs.

WATCH: Elon Musk 'goes for a walk' with Tesla's humanoid robot 'Optimus'

WATCH: Elon Musk 'goes for a walk' with Tesla's humanoid robot 'Optimus'

‘Optimus’ was announced at Tesla’s ‘Artificial Intelligence Day’ event in August 2021.

Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk, on Wednesday, shared an update on the progress of humanoid robot ‘Optimus’, which was seen practising its walking.

Sharing a video on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk captioned the clip, “Going for a walk with Optimus.”

The Tesla bot is being designed to be capable of performing tasks that are “unsafe, repetitive or boring.” Earlier this month, the “general-purpose” bot was seen folding t-shirts in a 30-second video, shared by Musk on ‘X’ account.

Tesla team shares insights on progress

At the start of the new year, the Tesla team remarked that “2023 was awesome for Optimus.”

On the progress made in the project, they said the team had moved to a more stable, Tesla-designed platform (Optimus Gen-1) from the earlier exploratory prototype. The team further made advances by upgrading to ‘Optimus’ Gen-2 in December 2023, in a major breakthrough.

“We’ve designed, trained and deployed some of the first end-to-end neural nets for humanoid robots ever demonstrated to autonomously perform tasks requiring coordinated control of humanoid torso, arms, and full hands with fingers,” the engineer on the project Milan Kovac said on January 1.

Tesla on Optimus’ end goal

‘Optimus’ was announced at Tesla’s ‘Artificial Intelligence Day’ event in August 2021. Musk had said a prototype would come up by 2022.

Kovac credited Musk’s vision for the project, large-scale artificial intelligence resources, and his team for the progress made so far.

According to Tesla, the end objective of the humanoid robot is to be able to balance navigation, perception and interaction with the physical world.
