Google Chrome for Macs, PCs set to get 3 new GenAI features: Details here

AI features on Google Chrome

Google has announced that it will be rolling out three new generative-AI based experimental features to its Chrome browser. These include a Tab Organizer, AI-generated Themes, and Help me Write. According to Google, these new GenAI features will make it easier for users to browse the web by offering personalised experiences.

The new GenAI features will initially be available in the US for Chrome on both Macs and Windows PC. However, a global release is expected in the coming months after its experimental phase ends. These features will be disabled for enterprise and educational accounts as these features are early public experiments. Below are the details:

Tab Organizer

With Tab Organizer, Google said, Chrome would automatically suggest and create tab groups based on open tabs. The feature organises multiple tabs based on their similarities, making it easier for the users to browse multiple topics. Google said that this feature is helpful for those working on multiple tasks in the browser at the same time, like planning a trip, researching a topic and shopping.

To organise tabs, users need to right click on any open tab and select “Organize Similar Tabs” in the drop down menu. Google said its Chrome browser would suggest names and emojis for the created tab groups for easier identification.

AI-generated Themes

Google said it is adding the same text-to-image diffusion model to Chrome browser that it introduced last year with Android 14 operating system on the Pixel 8 devices. Using this feature, users can generate personalised themes based on a subject, mood, visual style and colour for the browser.

To generate AI themes, users need to go-to the “Customize Chrome” side panel on the browser and then click on “Change theme”. There, users need to select the “Create with AI” option and select the subject and other optional details such as colour and style around which the theme has to be generated.

Help me write

The AI-powered writing assistant will be available on the Chrome browser starting next month. Once rolled-out, Google said, users can right click on any text box or field on a website and select the “Help me write” option. Users will be required to type in a few words so that the writing assistant can process the input and generate an appropriate text for the selected field. This feature can be used to write a review for a product online or make a formal inquiry on any website.

Microsoft, others making tools to help small businesses capitalise on AI

Microsoft, others making tools to help small businesses capitalise on AI

The influx of generative artificial intelligence software is transforming small businesses.

Small business owners are using AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Bard and others to check grammar in emails, punch up marketing copy and research business plans.

What’s more, bigger companies are developing tools specifically to help small businesses integrate AI into their operations in more advanced ways.

Microsoft’s Copilot lets users ask software to perform tasks like summarize an email or a Teams meeting, come up with key themes in a document, or draft emails in a conversational tone in Outlook.

The service, which costs USD 30-a-month per employee, was recently expanded from companies with at least 300 employees to all companies, so smaller businesses even solopreneurs with no employees can use Copilot for Microsoft 365.

Meanwhile, MasterCard is piloting a product called MasterCard Small Business AI, aimed at helping small business owners analyze data and offer other resources to help grow their business.

It uses information from MasterCard’s content library as well as information licensed from media companies focused on inclusivity, including digital media company Blavity Media Group and Spanish-language media company TelevisaUnivision, to answer small business owners’ queries.

Mastercard plans to pilot the tool in the US later this year, with international markets to follow.

Netflix to stream WWE Raw starting 2025 in billion bet on live events

Netflix to stream WWE Raw starting 2025 in $5 billion bet on live events

The streaming pioneer has an option to extend the deal for another 10 years or to opt out after the initial five years

Netflix took a big step into live events on Tuesday with a more than $5 billion rights deal that would make it the exclusive home of World Wrestling Entertainment’s Raw from January 2025.

The 10-year partnership will put Raw on the streaming platform in the U.S., Canada, Britain and Latin America, among other territories, the companies said.

Netflix will also exclusively telecast outside the U.S. all WWE shows and specials, including SmackDown, as well as pay-per-view live events such as WrestleMania and Royal Rumble.

News of the deal sent shares of TKO Group Holdings, the parent firm of WWE, up 21% in early trading. Shares of Netflix were flat.

The streaming pioneer has an option to extend the deal for another 10 years or to opt out after the initial five years.

Netflix began experimenting with live events last year, with comedian Chris Rock’s stand-up special, “Selective Outrage.” It also has found success with sports-related programming, such as its Formula 1 racing documentary series, “Drive to Survive,” and the behind-the-scenes golf documentary series, “Full Swing.” In October, it hosted its first live sports event, “The Netflix Cup,” featuring athletes from “Drive to Survive and “Full Swing.”

The company’s third-quarter investor letter hinted there might be more to come – signaling an evolution from CEO Ted Sarandos’s long held position that Netflix was “in the sports business,” focused on the drama of sport, but not live games.

“As we work to develop the best programming mix for our members, we’re also having great success with our sports shoulder programming, making Netflix the go-to place for anyone excited by the drama of sport,” the company said in its third-quarter note. “It’s another area where we can deliver enormous value for our members as well as rights holders and talent.”

Mark Shapiro, president of TKO, told Reuters that Netflix “threaded the needle perfectly,” by offering live sports programming that “comes with a spine of entertainment.” The Raw deal marks Netflix’s first long-term bet on live events that appeal to a loyal, multi-generational base of fans who turn to WWE each week for bouts between the likes of CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. Unlike other professional sports, the competition is year-round and not seasonal.

Shapiro hailed the deal as “transformative,” adding that it expands the reach of WWE and brings appointment viewing to Netflix.

“We cracked the code with Netflix,” Shapiro said “We’re now a neighbor of the best premium programming slate you’re going to find in the universe of content.” Raw, which airs on Mondays, is the top show on the Comcast-owned USA Network, where it brings in 17.5 million unique viewers over the course of the year. It debuted in 1993 and has 1,600 episodes.

It reliably draws an audience – something Netflix will find valuable, as it builds its ad-supported streaming service, known in industry parlance as AVOD.

“This will be a monster impact player for their AVOD platform,” said Shapiro.

The deal with Comcast ends this year and Raw was paid about $265 million a year for the rights under the agreement, according to Bloomberg News.

WWE merged with Endeavor Group’s UFC to form TKO Group Holdings in a deal valued at $21 billion last year, forming one of the biggest names in wrestling and entertainment.

Microsoft, others making tools to help small businesses capitalise on AI

Microsoft Corp's Bing, Edge to avoid EU's digital dominance crackdown

By Samuel Stolton and Stephanie Bodoni

Microsoft Corp.’s Bing search engine, Edge web browser and Advertising services are set to be exempt from strict new European Union antitrust rules reining in Big Tech platforms because watchdogs tentatively concluded they’re not dominant enough to be hit by the regulation.

European Commission officials are leaning toward the reprieve for the US software giant as part of a five-month market investigation ending in February, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. The boost for Microsoft comes after Bloomberg reported that officials already opted against including Apple Inc.’s iMessage service in the new Digital Markets Act, which takes effect in March.

The EU’s DMA strikes at the heart of the business models of six of the world’s most powerful technology firms deemed to be digital “gatekeepers.” While some of their services are now set to be exempt, Microsoft and Apple — alongside Meta Platforms Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Amazon.com Inc. and TikTok owner ByteDance Ltd. — will still face a raft of new obligations aimed at preventing them from abusing their dominance in other parts of their business.

For Microsoft this includes its Windows operating system for PCs and LinkedIn social media platform. For Apple, it includes its iOS mobile operating system, App Store and Safari browser.

Under the law, it will be illegal for the designated firms to favor their own services over those of rivals. They’ll be barred from combining personal data across their different services, prohibited from using data they collect from third-party merchants to compete against them, and will have to allow users to download apps from rivals platforms.

The Brussels-based commission and Microsoft declined to comment on the EU carve-outs.

Apple, Meta and ByteDance all filed court challenges against the EU’s decision to designate them or some of their services under the DMA.
