Korean electronics major Samsung will manufacture its latest artificial intelligence-loaded Galaxy S24 series at its India factory for both domestic sale as well as exports, senior company officials said here.

The company unveiled its latest flagship device — Galaxy S24 series — with focus on Artificial Intelligence- (AI)-based applications to enhance productivity like real-time voice call and message translation in select languages, including Hindi, improved image editing, camera effects to woo content creators, and Corning Gorilla Armor glass to enhance durability of display.

“This is a device of the future. While the world talks about AI as the next big thing, the Galaxy S24 series brings it live to you. I am very happy to announce that Galaxy S24 series will be manufactured at our Noida factory in India,” Samsung India President and CEO J B Park said.

He said consumers in India can start pre-booking Galaxy S24 series smartphones from January 18 and it will go on sale from January 31.

Samsung has priced Galaxy S24 series smartphones with storage capacity in the range of 8GB system memory (ROM) and 256 GB storage (RAM) to 12 GB ROM with 1 terabyte (TB) RAM.

The devices will be available in India in the price range of Rs 79,999 to Rs 1,59,999 apiece.

“At Samsung, we are proud to be driving premiumisation in India. I am positive that India will be at the forefront of embracing the AI revolution by operating Galaxy S24,” Park said.

Samsung India Senior Vice-President for mobile business Raju Pullan said the entire S24 series will be manufactured in India for India as well as for the other parts of the world.

“Entire range of Galaxy S24 series will be manufactured in India, for India and we will be also making it available for the world from India,” Pullan said.

The company has come up with promotional offers to woo existing users of Samsung S series.

“There is a special announcement for India. We will have an upgrade programme for India where consumers can buy Galaxy S24 Ultra 512 GB at an effective price almost equal to the price of Galaxy S23 Ultra 256 GB version,” Pullan said.

The company will offer similar deals on other Galaxy S24 models.

Cybermedia Research, Head, Industry Intelligence Group, Prabhu Ram, said fuelled by premium smartphone segment growth, the S24’s true success hinges on Samsung’s ability to clearly articulate the value of its AI features to consumers.

“Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series marks a bold AI-infused pivot, aiming to redefine the smartphone experience with purpose and impact. This strategic shift aligns with a 2024 industry trend where OEMs will look to leverage on-device and cloud AI to unlock new possibilities,” he said.

Mobile devices market research and analytics firm Counterpoint Research, Vice President of Research, and Partner, Neil Shah, said the launch of Galaxy S24 series gives the brand an early mover advantage in AI-enabled devices space.

“Premium smartphone segment is growing in India faster than the overall market and Samsung has around 27 per cent market share. It will look for higher market share with momentum around AI. It has brought in features like live translation and other AI applications that will push older Galaxy S series to shift to S24 series,” Shah said.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series: Know everything about Galaxy AI features here

Samsung Galaxy S24 series: Know everything about Galaxy AI features here

Circle to Search on Samsung Galaxy S24 series

Samsung Galaxy AI took centre stage at the Galaxy Unpacked event on January 17 where the South Korean Electronics maker unveiled the Galaxy S24 series smartphones – Galaxy S24, S24 Plus and S24 Ultra. The Galaxy AI is a comprehensive suite of tools and services that lets users do more with these smartphones. Among the notable features is the new live translation for call and messaging, gen-AI powered tools for text summarisation and photo editing, and a new Circle to Search feature powered by Google. Below are the details:

Circle to Search

Samsung has unveiled a novel gesture-driven feature, Circle to Search, powered by Google. The Galaxy S24 series users can activate this feature by a prolonged press of the home button. Subsequently, users can either use a circular, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping gestures on the display to get search results associated with the selected subject, avoiding the need for screenshots. In specific locations, curated search results will be presented alongside generative AI-powered overviews.

AI-powered communication

Samsung has introduced several AI-driven solutions to facilitate multilingual interactions across phone calls, messages, and in-person dialogues. Live Translate, for example, is a tool that furnishes real-time voice and text translations during phone calls within the smartphone’s native calling application, negating the necessity for third-party applications.

Then there is a new Interpreter feature, which facilitates real-time translation of in-person conversations, presenting a split-screen view for individuals facing each other to comprehend the spoken content. This capability is inherent in Galaxy S24 series smartphones and operates without reliance on an active internet connection.

Chat Assist is another communication-related feature that integrates AI into the Samsung Keyboard for real-time message translations on supported platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. Additionally, it offers intelligent suggestions for responding to messages, supporting translations across 13 languages presently.

As for the generative capabilities, which is new to the AI realm, Samsung has Note Assist. Integrated with the Samsung Notes app, the feature provides AI-generated summaries for lengthy texts, generates headline and subheads, and creates notes cover.

Transcript Assist is another GenAI-powered feature that utilises Speech-to-Text technology to transcribe, summarise, and translate recordings. Furthermore, the Galaxy S24 series gains the capability to summarise web articles and suggest personalised highlights.

AI-powered Imaging

Edit Suggestion: Utilises AI to recommend suitable adjustments for captured images, enhancing overall results.

Generative Edit: A generative AI tool, extends image backgrounds beyond their original borders and facilitates subject movement within the image while employing generation techniques to seamlessly blend the original and altered elements. Images manipulated with AI tools display a watermark and relevant metadata.

Instant Slow-mo: Utilises AI-driven frame generation techniques to add frames to standard videos, rendering them smoother for slow-motion viewing. It works with videos not natively recorded in slow-mo.

Super HDR offers HDR previews within the camera app before capturing an image. Additionally, it enhances brightness and adjusts colours and contrast by analysing highlighted sections for an augmented HDR effect.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series: Know India pricing, availability info, and more

Samsung brings Galaxy S24 series with AI features, titanium frame and more

Samsung Galaxy S24 series (Photo: Samsung)

Samsung, the renowned South Korean tech giant has introduced a smartphone series globally at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked Event 2024 event in San Jose, California.

Samsung unveiled three phones, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S24 Plus, and the Galaxy S24.

According to The Verge, Samsung’s new AI-infused features are now available, and the most essential thing to know about Samsung’s new S24 series is that they are the same whether you choose the $ 799.99 Galaxy S24, the $ 999.99 Galaxy S24 Plus, or the $1,299.99 Galaxy S24 Ultra.

In the United States, all phones have Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processors, therefore the performance of on-device AI functions should be similar.

Samsung also promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for all three phones, which matches Google’s remarkable support period for its Pixel 8 lineup.

One of the Ultra’s most striking new features is its construction. This year’s model features a titanium frame, similar to Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro, which Samsung claims provides more durability.

Unlike Apple, Samsung did not employ the material to make the phone lighter; titanium is heavier than aluminium, but it is more robust, allowing you to use less of it.

In this case, Samsung has simply chosen to prioritise endurance. The S24 Ultra weighs almost the same as the S23 Ultra (8.22oz or 232 grams) making it somewhat heavier than the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The other big change up front is the display. The S24 Ultra comes with a 6.8-inch 1440p display, just like the S23 Ultra, but it finally ditches the curved edges inherited from the Note series in favour of a flat screen.

There’s still a slight curve to the edge of the device, unlike the straight-edged S24 and S24 Plus, but now there’s much less chance of accidentally running your S Pen over the side of the display.

The flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. This chipset also claims to provide significant NPU improvements for efficient AI computation. It comes with three storage options: 12GB+1TB, 12GB+512GB, and 12GB+256GB.

For gaming, the Galaxy S24 Ultra has an excellent thermal control system with a 1.9 times larger vapour chamber, which improves device surface temperature while increasing sustained performance power. Ray tracing creates realistic pictures with enhanced shadow and reflection effects.

The S24 series includes a number of new picture and video editing tools powered by generative AI, which are represented across the UI by a highly Google Bard-esque star icon. You can circle photo topics to isolate and resize them, reposition them, or completely eliminate them from the frame. You may also modify the horizon level in your shot and have AI fill in the image’s edges instead of cropping.

Aside from their AI-infused features, the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus are largely a continuation of what we saw with last year’s S23 devices, but there are still a few hardware upgrades to be found.

The screens, for example, are both bigger and brighter this year. They now measure 6.2 and 6.7 inches in size (a 0.1-inch improvement in both cases), with peak brightnesses of 2,600 nits (up from 1,750 last year). And the S24 Plus also now boasts a 1440p resolution, up from 1080p, according to Verge.

The other four cameras’ hardware remains unaltered from last year, so still be working with a 200-megapixel f/1.7 main, a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide on the back, as well as a 12-megapixel selfie camera in the front.

Both the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ have 4,000mAh and 4,900mAh batteries, respectively. These devices also enable quick and wireless charging.

All Galaxy S24 devices run Android 14 and Samsung’s latest OneUI 6.1. Samsung also revealed that the Galaxy S24 series will be the first from the tech giant to receive seven years of operating system and security updates. It is the only smartphone manufacturer to do so, following Google’s Pixel 8 series.

Samsung claims that with OneUI 6.1, the new Galaxy S24 series will create new opportunities for the application of AI. The new series’ interpreter and live translation elements are among its strengths. The latest version of Live Translate allows for two-way, real-time text and voice translations during phone calls within the native app.

However, individuals positioned across from one another can read a text transcription of the other’s words thanks to the Interpreter, which allows live conversations to be translated instantaneously on a split-screen display. It functions even in Aeroplane mode, without Wi-Fi or cellular data.

Chat Assist can be useful in daily chats for messaging and other apps. With the gesture-driven Circle to Search with Google feature on the Galaxy S24 series, online search has also been revolutionised.

It is an amazing new tool that has, in some ways, allowed for the exploration of new avenues with a single motion. Users can circle and highlight anything on the Galaxy S24’s screen to view beneficial, excellent search results by long pressing the home button.

Samsung’s voice recorder is also getting Pixel-like live transcriptions with speaker labels and the ability to translate your transcriptions into another language. The Notes app is getting some handy tools, too, with the ability to automatically format and summarize pages for you.

And if any of the above is enticing enough to tempt you to trade in your S23, you can stop right there. Samsung plans to bring these AI capabilities to S23-series phones and the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 sometime in the future, reported The Verge.

Meta's Director, former COO Sheryl Sandberg to leave board after 12 years

Meta's Director, former COO Sheryl Sandberg to leave board after 12 years

By Alex Barinka and Kurt Wagner

Meta Platforms Inc. director and former Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said she will step down from the board this year, exiting her last official role at the social media company she helped grow from a promising internet startup into a digital-advertising stalwart.

“With a heart filled with gratitude and a mind filled with memories, I let the Meta board know that I will not stand for reelection this May,” Sandberg wrote Wednesday in a post on Meta’s flagship Facebook network. “Going forward, I will serve as an adviser to the company, and I will always be there to help the Meta teams.”

Sandberg, 54, joined Facebook in 2008 as No. 2 to co-founder Mark Zuckerberg to oversee the fledgling company’s advertising, partnerships, business development and operations, following stints at Google, McKinsey & Co. and the US Department of the Treasury. She left her job as COO of the company, by then rebranded as Meta, in 2022.

During her time at the tech giant, which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, Sandberg was key to turning the social network into a money-making machine and one of the world’s biggest companies. In 2022 Meta brought in almost $117 billion in revenue, most of it from targeted advertising.

She often served as the public face of the business, particularly among policymakers and regulators. As criticism of Facebook and its platforms mounted in more recent years, including bruising scandals over lapses in privacy and content moderation, Sandberg increasingly retreated from the spotlight.

“Your dedication and guidance have been instrumental in driving our success,” Zuckerberg wrote in a comment on Sandberg’s Facebook post. “I am grateful for your unwavering commitment to me and Meta over the years.”

It’s unclear if Meta plans to replace Sandberg on the board, which now has eight other members, including Zuckerberg as chairman. A company spokesperson said Meta consistently evaluates how to grow the board, but declined to offer further details.

Since leaving the COO role at Meta, Sandberg has spent more time on philanthropic efforts. Her nonprofit organization, LeanIn.Org, launched a program for girls 11 to 15 called Lean In Girls, aiming to teach lessons about resilience, positive risk-taking and leadership. She was also part of a team of investors that brought a women’s professional soccer club to the San Francisco Bay Area last year; the team will play its inaugural season in 2024.

Most recently, Sandberg organized an event at the United Nations focused on sexual violence that occurred during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel.

Apple has to stop selling smartwatches with blood oxygen feature in US

Apple has to stop selling smartwatches with blood oxygen feature in US

By Mark Gurman, Sabrina Willmer and Christopher Yasiejko

Apple Inc. has to stop selling its Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches with a blood oxygen feature in the US, suffering another legal setback in its patent dispute with Masimo Corp.

The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit declined Wednesday to grant Apple a longer pause on an import ban of the devices imposed by the US International Trade Commission. The ruling means the company has to stop selling the watches with the oxygen measurement feature while an appeal of the ban plays out — a period that Apple believes could last a year or more.

The decision means Apple will probably have to turn to its backup plan: selling watches without the blood oxygen tool that was found to violate Masimo patents. Apple has developed a software workaround to the ban that eliminates the function from its devices. Last week, the US Customs and Border Protection agency approved redesigned versions of the watches that didn’t have the oxygen reader.

Masimo shares jumped 2.1 per cent to $122.57 following the decision, reaching their highest level since August. Chief Executive Officer Joe Kiani said in a statement that the development is a “victory for the integrity of the American patent system.”

Kiani added that the decision “affirms that even the largest and most powerful companies must respect the intellectual rights of American inventors and must deal with the consequences when they are caught infringing others’ patents.” Apple didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The court battle has threatened one of Apple’s biggest moneymakers in its home market, an unprecedented situation for the tech giant. The watches are a central piece of the company’s wearables, home and accessories division, a business that generated more than 10 per cent of revenue last year, or nearly $40 billion.

The ITC ruled in October that Apple’s latest watches violate patents related to blood oxygen measurement, an area known as pulse oximetry. That led Apple to pause sales of the smartwatches just ahead of Christmas, though an interim stay allowed the company to bring the products back late last month.

According to the ITC, the harm Apple said it would face from the ban “is not unquantifiable, but rather speculative.” Apple maintains that the ruling from the ITC is erroneous and should be reversed.

Masimo had urged the Federal Circuit to reject the request for an extended delay, arguing Apple had almost three years to anticipate a ban and “cannot complain about the consequences of its own failure to prepare for exclusion.”

Apple pushed back on the ITC’s and Masimo’s arguments that its ability to continue selling the noninfringing Apple Watch SE means any reputational harm from the ban can’t be truly irreparable.

It also criticized the product that the trade dispute was launched to protect, Masimo’s W1 watch, saying it didn’t exist when Masimo filed its complaint, wasn’t placed in the consumer channel and is sold only in negligible quantities “well over two years after this investigation began on the false premise that Masimo had an established domestic industry.”

The appeals court said in a brief order Wednesday, “We reach no conclusion on the merits of the appeal.” The panel said the temporary stay will expire at 5 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.

Apple, based in Cupertino, California, added the blood oxygen sensor to its watches in 2020 with the Series 6. Masimo, a medical device company, sued Apple that year, alleging that the iPhone maker violated several of its health technology patents and stole its trade secrets.

The case is Apple Inc. v. ITC, 24-1285, US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
