Meta ramps up AI efforts by building chip arsenal, consolidating teams

Meta plans to have about 350,000 H100 GPUs from chip designer Nvidia by the end of the year

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on Thursday that the company was bringing its AI research team “closer together” with a more business-focused generative AI team launched last year, doubling down on a push to get the technology into products.

The social media giant was building out its infrastructure to accommodate the push and planned to have about 350,000 H100 GPUs (graphics processing units) from chip designer Nvidia by the end of the year, Zuckerberg said in posts on Meta’s Instagram and Threads platforms.

In combination with equivalent chips from other suppliers, Meta will have about 600,000 total GPUs by the end of the year, he said.

That amount would make Meta’s system, once finished, among the largest in the technology industry.

By contrast, Amazon last autumn said it was building out a system with 100,000 of its Trainium2 chips, while Oracle brought online a system with 32,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs.

A Meta spokesperson declined to specify which GPU suppliers the company was using aside from market leader Nvidia, though it has said publicly it also plans to use chips from AMD. Reuters has previously reported it has an internally designed GPU-like chip in the works, as well.

Meta has scrambled to build out its computing arsenal to support a mobilization around generative AI this past year, after years of producing leading research on the technology through its FAIR team but scant focus on building it into its core social media products and AR/VR hardware devices.

The company convened a “GenAI” team last year to lead an effort to change that after the breakout success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022.

Since then, Meta has launched a commercial version of its Llama large language model, ad tools that can generate image backgrounds from text prompts and a “Meta AI” chatbot that can be accessed directly via its Ray-Ban smart glasses.

In his posts on Thursday, Zuckerberg said the company was currently training a third version of the Llama model.

He also tied the AI investments back to the pivot to the AR/VR-driven metaverse vision that inspired him to change the company’s name to Meta in 2021, saying people would “need new devices” like glasses for interacting with AI.

Vision Pro global debut before Apple's annual developers conference: Report

Vision Pro global debut before Apple's annual developers conference: Report

Apple will likely launch its upcoming Vision Pro headset globally before its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which is expected in June this year, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The Apple Vision Pro will be available for pre-order in the US starting today, with sales kicking off from February 2. However, the American tech giant has not yet officially confirmed about its availability in other markets.

In a recent post on Medium, Kuo said that Apple plans to share more development details about visionOS with global developers at WWDC 2024, “If Apple can launch Vision Pro in non-U.S. markets before WWDC 2024, it would be beneficial for promoting the global development ecosystem of visionOS,” he added.

Stating the reason for Apple keeping the Vision Pro exclusive to the US market, Kuo explained that the limited initial supply for the device, coupled with the time needed to modify the algorithms to comply with regulations in other regions, is keeping the company away from launching the headset in other markets initially. Additionally, Apple wants to ensure that the sales process goes smoothly in the home country before expanding it to other markets.

Ahead of the launch, Apple recently previewed the entertainment experiences launching with the Vision Pro headset. According to a press note by the company, the Vision Pro is set to debut with over 150 3D movies from Apple TV+ and Disney. Apple confirmed that other streaming platforms will add new 3D editions alongside or shortly following standard 2D releases for the Vision Pro. Apple said that Vision Pro users would be able to watch both 2D and 3D movies with Spatial Audio and in an environment for a more immersive experience.

OpenAI coup less stressful than superintelligent AI, says CEO Altman

OpenAI coup less stressful than superintelligent AI, says CEO Altman

By Thomas Seal

Sam Altman said that his dramatic and quickly-reversed firing at OpenAI was less nerve-wracking than how the world approaches making artificial intelligence as capable as humans.

“As the world gets closer to AGI, the stakes, the stress, the level of tension — that’s all going to go up,” the ChatGPT-maker’s chief executive officer and co-founder said on a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday.

AI has been a key theme at this year’s Davos summit, with business leaders discussing how best to use the technology after a flurry of investment, while raising concerns about risks, including its potential impact on democracy during a bumper election year. The rapid advancements in the field and race by companies to achieve a hypothetical future artificial general intelligence, or AGI, has led to many policymakers to call for regulation.

Altman’s ouster by the board in November was “a microcosm of it, but probably not the most stressful experience we ever face,” he said, speaking on a panel about technology in a turbulent world. He said the episode taught the company not to let “not-urgent problems” linger.

“We had known that our board had gotten too small, and we knew that we didn’t have the level of experience we needed, but last year was such a wild year for us in so many ways, that we sort of just neglected it,” he said.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series: Flat displays to AI, check new features detail

Samsung Galaxy S24 series: Flat displays to AI, check new features detail

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphone

The Samsung Galaxy S24 series has introduced notable new features across various facets, including display, camera, software, and construction. Besides, there is Galaxy AI deeply integrated across various sections for enhanced user experience. It is these behind the scene changes that make the Galaxy S24 series different from its predecessors, despite all three models in it looking nearly identical to the predecessors. Let us go through details on what is new on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Display

Until 2023, Samsung used a two-side curved display on the top-end Ultra model and flat displays on the Plus and base models. This year, the entire line-up has a flat display. Another notable change is the refresh rate, which is now uniform across models – 1Hz-120Hz. All three models boast 2600 peak brightness and vision booster technology. In a surprise move, Samsung has extended the resolution to QHD+ in the Plus model, up from fullHD+ in the predecessor.

Processors

Samsung once had only Exynos chips inside India-bound Galaxy S-series smartphones. Couple of years back, it decided to supply Qualcomm chips powered Galaxy S-series smartphones to India, in line with global markets. This year, the Qualcomm chip is available only in the Ultra model. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 system-on-chip. The other two models in the line-up, the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus, are powered by its in-house developed Exynos 2400 SoC.

Protection and durability

Traditionally, the entire Galaxy S-series get similar protection and durability consideration. This year, however, it changed. The top-end Galaxy 24 Ultra boasts titanium frame and Gorilla Glass Armor protecting the display. Both these durability and protection related advancements have not made it to the Plus and base models.

Software

The most notable update in the Galaxy S24 series pertains to Samsung’s extended software support. The company has committed to providing up to seven years of Android OS updates and security patches for all Galaxy S24 series smartphones.
