Sachin Tendulkar reacts on his viral deepfake video endorsing mobile app

Sachin Tendulkar reacts on his viral deepfake video endorsing mobile app

Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, on Monday, sharply reacted to a fabricated deepfake viral video, projecting the cricket legend as endorsing a mobile gaming application. Tendulkar called the incident “disturbing” while urging his fans and followers to report such videos.

The ex-India national cricket team member shared the viral artificially generated video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and said that the video in question and any similar videos are “fake.” “These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see rampant misuse of technology. Requesting everyone to report videos, ads and apps like these in large numbers,” he said.

Tendulkar also directed his concern towards social media platforms and said they need to be alert and responsive to such complaints. “Swift action from their end is crucial to stopping the spread of misinformation and deepfakes,” he further wrote.

What is deepfake technology?

Deepfake artificial intelligence(AI) is a type of emerging technology, which is used to create convincing deceptive image, audio and video footage. “The underlying technology can replace faces, manipulate facial expressions, synthesise faces, and synthesise speech. Deepfakes can depict someone appearing to say or do something that they in fact never said or did and are aimed at spreading misinformation,” the United States’ Government Accountability Office (GAO) explains.

Sachin Tendulkar’s deepfake video goes viral

In the fake video, Tendulkar is seen endorsing a mobile application ‘Aviator’ as he says his daughter (Sara Tendulkar) also plays it. The video further depicts Tendulkar as saying that it’s also very easy to make money via the application and can be easily downloaded on smartphones.

Rashmika Mandana’s deepfake video sparked row

Notably, Tendulkar is not the first celebrity to have fallen victim to the concerning AI trend. In November last year, a viral deepfake video of actress Rashmika Mandana also surfaced online, raising concerns about privacy rights as AI increasingly integrates with social media.

The government, taking note of the harmful trend, had also sent a notice to social media platforms in December, asking them to comply with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 and advised them to implement more measures to crack down aggressively on fabricated ‘deepfake’ clips.

Experts have flagged the need to curb this growing trend, which is anticipated to further add to the problem of misinformation and privacy violations, especially in light of elections and non-consensual pornography.

Notably, the ‘2023 State of Deepfakes Report’ by ‘Home Security Heroes’, a US-based web security services company, highlighted that deepfake videos saw a five-time increase since 2019.

3nm chip to faster 5G: What analysts expect from Apple iPhone 16 series

3nm chip to faster 5G: What analysts expect from Apple iPhone 16 series

The 2024 iPhone would be powered by Apple A18 processors, which would be based on 3-nanometer architecture. According to a report by 9To5Mac, stating an investor note by technology analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 16 series would feature Apple 3nm chips across all models but in different configurations and different 5G modems.

According to Pu, alongside a brand new processor, the base-line iPhone 16 models would feature 8GB RAM instead of the 6GB on the current generation models. For the iPhone 16 Pro models, the analyst said, Apple would use an A18 Pro chip that would be based on 3nm architecture but of different configurations marked by different 5G modems.

For reference, the Snapdragon X75 modem was launched in February last year. Qualcomm said that the Snapdragon X75 introduces a new architecture, a new software suite and is the first modem to support 5G Advanced for faster 5G download and upload speeds compared to the X70.

Apart from these changes, Pu stated, the iPhone 16 Pro would feature an upgraded 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor – a significant upgrade from the 12MP on the iPhone 15 Pro. This change is likely aimed at improving the spatial video recording capability of the Pro model to aid the upcoming Vision Pro headset. Pu also stated that the Pro model would support the recently announced Wi-Fi 7, while the base models would support Wi-Fi 6E.

AI can help mfg, healthcare, other sectors scale new heights: Nadir Godrej

AI can help mfg, healthcare, other sectors scale new heights: Nadir Godrej

NADIR GODREJ, Chairman, Godrej Industries

Business leader Nadir Godrej on Sunday said manufacturing, healthcare and other sectors in India can scale newer heights with the right use of artificial intelligence.

Here to attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Godrej also said India can achieve its net-zero goals ahead of the deadline as the country is moving in the right direction on climate related matters.

Speaking to PTI, he said AI has great potential to help various sectors by optimising processes and it should be seen as a facilitator rather than a disruptor.

Godrej is chairman and managing director of business conglomerate Godrej Industries.

Climate change, conflicts, geopolitical and geo-economic concerns and opportunities and threats posed by AI are among the key topics to be discussed at the five-day WEF annual meeting beginning here on Monday.

Godrej said the meeting should yield several positive outcomes on areas like climate change, global economic concerns and conflict resolution.

Apple to host 25-min in-store demo sessions with Vision Pro buyers: Report

Apple to host 25-min in-store demo sessions with Vision Pro buyers: Report

Apple is reportedly planning to conduct in-store demonstrations with the Vision Pro buyers that may last for up to 25 minutes. According to a news report on Bloomberg, Apple has hosted several employees at its offices in Cupertino, California, US to walk them through the process ahead of the Vision Pro launch on February 2.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple stores in the US are planning to have multiple demo units available along with dedicated sit-down areas where the presentation will take place. The demo would entail scanning the user’s face with an app and checking for prescription information, if the user wears glasses. The demo unit will then be set-up with a light seal, foam cushion, lenses and band size put together according to the data collected. Gurman said that the stores will have light seals in more than 25 shapes, cushions in two sizes and multiple lenses for demos.

Once the device is ready, staff members will explain how to use the pointer using eyes and how to adjust the Digital Crown for switching between virtual and augmented reality. When calibrated, the staff at Apple store will take the users through a series of spatial pictures and videos and will let them scroll through the web using the headset.

In his report, Gurman said, “Apple expects to see an initial sales surge, when early adopters snap up the device, but then a tapering in demand,” so it has told the retail stores to maintain their inventory space accordingly.

Last week, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Apple will likely produce between 60,000 to 80,000 units of Vision Pro for its launch. In his post, Kuo said that he expects Apple to sell out the Vision Pro headset soon as the shipment is not large. He added that despite the high price and unclear product positioning of the headset, the user expectation from the product along with the base of core fans and heavy users will make it a sell out soon after the release.

Priced at $3,499, Vision Pro headset will be available in the US from February 2 with pre-orders starting on January 19. The mixed reality headset will likely be powered by Apple’s M2 chip.  Gurman suggested that the chip on the headset will be a higher end variant of M2 with 10 GPU cores and 8 CPU cores.
