Artificial intelligence will affect almost 40% of global jobs, says IMF

By Alicia Diaz

Artificial intelligence will affect almost 40% of global jobs, with advanced economies facing greater exposure than emerging markets and low-income countries, according to an International Monetary Fund analysis.

“In most scenarios, AI will likely worsen overall inequality, a troubling trend that policymakers must proactively address to prevent the technology from further stoking social tensions,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said in a blog post on the study.

AI’s income inequality effect will largely depend on how much the technology complements high earners. More productivity from high-income workers and companies would boost capital returns, widening the wealth gap, Georgieva said. Countries should provide “comprehensive social safety nets” and retraining programs for vulnerable workers, she said.

While there’s potential for AI to fully replace some jobs, the more likely scenario is that it’ll complement human work, according to the analysis. Advanced economies may have about 60% of jobs affected, more than emerging and low-income countries.

Georgieva’s take on artificial intelligence coincides with the meeting of global business and political leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where AI is a topic of discussion.

Companies have been throwing cash at the emerging technology, sometimes sparking concern among employees about the future of their roles. One example is Buzzfeed Inc., which announced plans to use AI to help with content creation and closed its core news department, laying off more than 100 staffers.

The European Union reached a tentative deal in December on legislation setting out safeguards on AI, while the US is still weighing its federal regulatory stance.

Samsung brings BP, ECG monitoring features to Galaxy Watch series in India

Samsung brings BP, ECG monitoring features to Galaxy Watch series in India

Samsung has started rolling out blood pressure and electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring features on the Samsung Health Monitor app for its Galaxy Watch series. Samsung said in a press statement that its blood pressure and ECG tracking features have received regulatory clearances and certifications from India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization.

The newly added features are supported on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 series and will roll out soon for the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 4 series through the updated Samsung Health Monitor app.

The Galaxy Watch features a Photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor, which can record systolic and diastolic pressure, and pulse rate. Similarly, for ECG, the above listed Watches have built-in sensors to detect the electrical signals produced by the heart each time it beats and the information is recorded on a graph. The new update for the Samsung Health Monitor app allows users to save and share ECG and blood pressure data recorded on the smartwatch.

The ECG monitoring feature is also available on the Apple Watch in India on Watch Series 4 or later. However, the blood pressure monitor is not available on any Apple Watch series.

How-to measure blood pressure on Galaxy Watch

  • Download the Samsung Health Monitor App on your Galaxy Watch and Galaxy smartphone

  • Calibrate your Galaxy Watch based on the instructions on the Samsung Health Monitor app

  • Wear your Galaxy Watch on the same wrist as during the calibration and make sure the strap is snug, then measure your blood pressure

  • Review your blood pressure measurements

How-to take an ECG reading on Galaxy Watch

  • Open the Samsung Health Monitor app on your Galaxy Watch

Apple to put up on sale limited Vision Pro headsets at Feb 2 launch: Report

Apple to put up on sale limited Vision Pro headsets at Feb 2 launch: Report

Apple will likely produce between 60,000 to 80,000 units of Vision Pro for its launch on February 2, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In a post dated January 12 on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Ming-Chi Kuo stated that he expects the upcoming Apple product to sell out soon as the shipment is not large.

In his post, Kuo said that Apple has not clearly defined the product positioning and key applications of the Vision Pro, yet the user expectation from the product along with the base of core fans and heavy users will make it a sell out soon after the release despite the high price. Whether the “demand for Vision Pro can be sustained after the novelty wears off” cannot be guaranteed, he added.

Earlier this week, in a post on Medium, Kuo said that the “Vision Pro’s MR/XR specifications and software are well above the industry average, so users are sure to be impressed by the product at first glance and can expect to see high praise for the Vision Pro’s user experience on the internet in general after the launch”. He believes that the company could maintain sales momentum and attract more developers if it provides details about the Vision Pro’s product positioning and key applications before pre-orders or launch.

In his post, Kuo also stated that the “lower-priced and second-generation versions that many investors have been waiting for have yet to be officially kicked off”. However, the feedback for Vision Pro after its launch will likely help Apple to decide on the models planned for later.

Apple recently announced that the Vision Pro headset will be available in the US from February 2 with pre-orders starting on January 19. The mixed reality headset is priced at $3,499 and costs more than thrice as much compared with the most expensive headset from Meta’s Quest line of mixed-and-virtual reality devices.
