Apple iOS 17.3: Roundup of new features coming to supported iPhones soon

Apple iOS 17.3: Roundup of new features coming to supported iPhones soon

Apple has released the first beta version of iOS 17.3 operating software to public beta testers. Among the new features in the beta version is the “Stolen Device Protection” and “Collaborative Playlists in Apple Music”. These features are currently under testing with select opted-in beta users and are expected to rollout with a stable iOS 17.3 update for all eligible iPhones in coming months. Below are the details:

Stolen Device Protection

The upcoming security feature adds a layer of extra protection for iPhone users. With the “Stolen Device Protection” feature enabled, the iPhone can only be unlocked when both passcode input and Face ID authentication matches the requirement. For opted-in users, features such as saved password in iCloud Keychain, factory reset option, saved payment methods, and option for “Lost Mode” are hidden. These can then only be accessed using biometric authentication.

Other sensitive actions such as changing iPhone passcode, Apple ID password, or turning off Find My will also require Face ID unlock. If the iPhone is not near the frequently visited location, the iPhone will wait for an hour to repeat the authentication process.

Collaborative Playlists in Apple Music

Announced at Apple WWDC 2023 event back in June, this feature would allow multiple people to create, edit, and control shared playlists in Apple Music. The feature also allows users to react to songs in collaborative playlists with emojis. Collaborative playlist feature was initially added in the early beta visions of iOS 17.2, but was removed before the update rolled out to general users.

Apple had recently rolled out iOS 17.2 update to eligible iPhone models. The update introduced a series of new features such as the new Journal app, ability to record Spatial videos on the iPhone 15 Pro models, and more. The Action Button on the iPhone 15 Pro models received an additional ‘Translate’ option that quickly translates phrases and helps users have a conversation with someone in another language. New widgets for the Weather app were also added with the iOS 17.2 update.

X faces snag on Dec 21, showed 'welcome to your timeline' instead of posts

X faces snag on Dec 21, showed 'welcome to your timeline' instead of posts

Microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) faced outage for several users in parts of the world owing to snags between 11 am and 12 pm  on Thursday. Its mobile app and website showed a “Welcome to your timeline” message instead of posts on users’ timeline.

According to Downdetector, which tracks outages by collating status reports from several sources including users, reports of outages on X rose from 5 at 10:46 am on Thursday to 4,773 at 11:14 am. The number of complaints went down to 516 by 12:17 pm.

This is not the first time the company has faced technical glitches. Earlier this month, The Verge reported that outgoing links from X had stopped working. Elon Musk-owned platform also faced downtime in March and July.

X was down over 13,000 times in July in the US and the UK, according to Downdetector. Users then got a message saying: “Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments then try again.”

On March 6 too, X went down for a few hours. Several users complained that they were unable to use it normally or experienced problems while trying to access links, images, and videos. Thousands were affected by this outage, and many people in some regions reported the website was slower than usual.

About the March outage, Platformer later reported that it occurred because of a mistake by X’s only remaining site reliability engineer. The engineer was operating solo after Musk instituted massive layoffs after this takeover.

Wearables: Do you want Mark Zuckerberg snooping around in your closet?

Wearables: Do you want Mark Zuckerberg snooping around in your closet?

By Parmy Olson

Avi Schiffmann is an entrepreneur with a crazy idea that might become our new reality. Recently, he went on a podcast and then wondered afterwards about how he’d presented himself. Instead of asking a human being for feedback, he asked a pendant he’d been wearing around his neck during the recording. It told him he needed to be a better listener.

The round plastic bauble known as Tab, the main product of Schiffmann’s wearable artificial intelligence startup, had a tiny microphone that fed a real-time audio recording of his daily interactions to an artificial intelligence model. Tab had some tips.

“You… abruptly changed the conversation topic,” the device replied via text to his phone. If Schiffmann had acknowledged something his interviewer said, that “would have made you appear more thoughtful.” Tab goes on sale next year for $600. A rival called Rewind will sell a similar pendant for $59. Tech giants are exploring similar products.

It’s virtually impossible to escape the all-seeing eye of companies like Google and Meta Platforms Inc. when we’re online. Now those companies have an opportunity to watch our real-world lives through wearables, which could make today’s online surveillance business look like something out of the Stone Age. An explosion of powerful artificial intelligence systems that can “hear” and “see” has led technologists to create devices that can effectively be AI’s eyes and ears. ChatGPT kicked off a race to build more powerful AI systems that are now “multimodal,” meaning they don’t just process text, but audio and visual images too.  Instead of being stuck in our pockets, new devices can be worn on our eyes or around our necks, like Schiffmann’s pendant.

The new wearables craze is coming to our face too (a decade after Google Glass). Several technology companies including Meta, Google, Snap Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. are all said to be developing glasses that use forward-facing cameras and powerful AI to “watch” the world around us. Mark Zuckerberg recently showed Meta’s glasses giving him wardrobe advice. While that might sound useful to the sartorially challenged, we should prepare ourselves for a world where AI is monitoring and even judging our interactions, a world where people are likely to become more guarded as a result. If you thought Instagram was making people more socially conscious, just wait for real-time watching and listening tech that compels them to be on their best behavior, always.

What makes this situation really disturbing is the possibility of large tech firms using wearable AI tech as a new opportunity to snoop on us. Meta, which is developing the smart glasses, is almost completely reliant on advertising, which contributes about 98 per cent of its revenue. Being able to “see” the clothes in our closet – as Zuckerberg was demonstrating — would present a tantalizing opportunity for its advertisers. Perhaps they could recommend a new pair of slacks at a discount in real time to be delivered in an hour, before your dinner date.

This level of access by tech companies would be a much more profound invasion of personal privacy than what we have today with digital assistants like Alexa and Siri, which don’t have powerful AI models that can analyze audio or video and generate a personalized analysis. A pair of glasses or pendant could end up recording highly personal moments, as well as third parties who might not want to be on camera. Meta’s current version of its glasses, which cost $300 and don’t use AI, have a tiny white light that comes on when the camera is activated, but that’s the extent of giving other people a say in how they’re recorded. Rewind, which makes the $59 listening pendant, says all data is stored locally on the device.

Meta, Google and Snapchat primarily make money by collecting our personal information and then targeting us with ads. If they start to do the same through a new crop of advanced wearables, we could find ourselves in the midst of a vast new, corporate surveillance network, not to mention more disconnected than ever from the people around us.

Sony sold over 50 million Play Station 5 gaming consoles over three years

Sony sold over 50 million Play Station 5 gaming consoles over three years

Sony is seeing strong momentum for its PlayStation 5 console, a senior games executive said, with lifetime sales exceeding 50 million units and the company recording its best-ever Black Friday period sales for the device.

The entertainment conglomerate is looking for a strong performance from the PS5, which is in its fourth year on the market, during the holiday shopping season to hit its sales target of a record 25 million units in the current financial year ending March 31.

“Given the momentum we’ve had in November and a lot of what we’re seeing in December, just in general we’re feeling very good about sales overall,” said Eric Lempel, senior vice president for global marketing, sales and business operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Sony’s games business was its largest unit by sales and the second-biggest contributor to operating profit after music in the last financial year.

Management comments in August that PS5 sales had been weaker than expected led to jitters among investors. Sony has said its 25 million unit goal is a “high target and not within easy reach”, with the company looking to strike a good balance between sales volumes and profitability.

“We’ve done some good promotions this year. I will say we’ve done fewer promotions at this stage of the lifecycle than we ever have in the history of the company,” Lempel said in an interview.

PS5 sales were hampered by supply chain snarls earlier in its lifecycle. Those have eased, with it now gaining tailwinds including the Oct. 20 launch of critically acclaimed game “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2”.

The Japanese company, which is known for single-player games, is making a push into live-service titles, which offer continuous online play.

Sony’s Naughty Dog last week said it has cancelled an online game from its “The Last of Us” franchise, saying releasing it would have hit development of single-player titles.

The company’s sales push comes as the industry debates the future for consoles as advances in cloud technology promise gaming untethered from bulky hardware.

For now, consoles continue to draw gamers, with Nintendo’s ageing Switch getting a boost this year from the launch of games such as its latest “Zelda” title.

Upcoming PlayStation titles include “The Last of Us Part II Remastered”, which launches in January, and limited-time exclusive “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” in February.

“We are still pushing really hard and I think we will have a record-breaking year no matter where we end up,” Lempel said.
