The country’s largest IT services exporter TCS on Monday announced its tie-up with Amazon Web Services to launch a dedicated generative artificial intelligence practice.

The Tata Group company recently announced that it has imparted foundation training on GenAI for 1 lakh employees across the world.

The practice will focus on using responsible AI frameworks and its “Paceport innovation hubs” to build a comprehensive portfolio of solutions and services for every industry sector, as per an official statement.

It has already bagged a customer, with the world’s largest hotel franchising company Wyndham Hotels and Resorts extending its strategic partnership with TCS and AWS to manage its digital transformation journey.

Generative AI has captured the attention of enterprises globally for its potential to significantly reshape industries, the statement said, adding that TCS has already been working on GenAI with clients.

TCS is at present focused on certifying over 25,000 employees on AWS generative AI services.

The company’s consultants will help clients explore the most impactful use cases in their business context, experiment collaboratively and co-innovate generative AI-powered solutions.

“To make generative AI deployment effective and trust-worthy, we must approach the technology holistically across multiple dimensions, including creativity, productivity, and business value,” Krishna Mohan, Deputy Head, TCS AI, Cloud unit, said.

Paris mayor quitting Musk’s ‘global sewer’ platform X ahead of Olympics

Paris mayor quitting Musk’s ‘global sewer’ platform X ahead of Olympics

The mayor of future Olympic host city Paris says she is quitting X, accusing Elon Musk ‘s platform previously known as Twitter of spreading disinformation and hatred and of becoming a gigantic global sewer that is toxic for democracy and constructive debate.

With its thousands of anonymous accounts and its troll farms, life on Twitter is the exact opposite of democratic life, Mayor Anne Hidalgo said in a long post titled, Why I am leaving Twitter.

I refuse to endorse this evil scheme, she wrote.

An Associated Press request for comment emailed to X got an automated reply, Busy now, please check back later.

Hidalgo’s office said posts on Monday in French and English that announced her departure from X would be the Socialist mayor’s last and that she will then close her account which has 1.5 million followers at the end of the week.

Her office said that Paris City Hall is keeping its own separate account on X.

Hidalgo’s withdrawal from X follows a fractious period for the mayor. She has faced criticism from political opponents over the expense and need for a trip she made in October to the French South Pacific territories of New Caledonia and Tahiti.

The Olympic surfing competition next July is being held on Tahiti’s world-famous Teahupo’o wave.

She also locked horns last week with government ministers over the French capital’s readiness for the 2024 Summer Games. Hidalgo said some transport options won’t be ready for the July 26-Aug. 11 Olympics. Firing back, Transport Minister Clement Beaune said the mayor’s comments were a shameful attempt to divert attention from her Pacific voyage.

Hidalgo’s office said her decision to leave X was not in response to the recent criticism but was thought-out over time. Musk took control of Twitter in October 2022 and has dismantled some of its core features.

We are dealing here with an utterly clear political project to push aside democracy and its values in favor of powerful private interests, Hidalgo wrote.

Tech Mahindra on Monday said it has collaborated with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to build a sports cloud platform for sporting enthusiasts worldwide.

Tech Mahindra and AWS will offer a comprehensive digital platform to sports organizations, offering use cases related to content and community engagement, customer data management and audience segmentation, and sports analytics, the company said in a statement.

The platform will also offer immersive stadium-to-home fan experiences by leveraging augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/ VR), and metaverse gamification.

The cloud offering will also enable sports organizations to build and transform digital properties of sports teams and franchises and generate new revenue streams by developing new services and features tailored to audience needs.

Tech Mahindra and AWS in September this year announced a strategic collaboration where both entities can participate in joint go-to-market initiatives and drive business growth.

Tech Mahindra Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Growth Jagdish Mitra said, “Our collaboration with AWS, that offers the broadest and deepest set of cloud services, will transform how fans interact with their favourite sports, creating a dynamic and captivating experience for viewers. By building Sports Cloud on AWS, we aim to build a personalized, fan-focused community that transcends physical sports.

AI chip boom fuels Taiwan firm’s 40% rally, beating Qualcomm, peers

AI chip boom fuels Taiwan firm’s 40% rally, beating Qualcomm, peers

By Charlotte Yang

A five-month rally in MediaTek Inc looks set to extend as booming demand for smartphones and a promising new AI chip brighten the company’s outlook.

The Taiwanese tech firm’s stock has soared almost 40% since the end of June, outperforming a 2% advance in the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index and a 7% rise in its US-based rival Qualcomm Inc. The gains have been fueled by robust appetite for mobile devices that utilize the company’s chips, especially in China.

The buzz surrounding MediaTek casts a spotlight on growing competition between semiconductor firms that are exploiting the use of AI to grab a larger share of the smartphone business. Investors see the Taiwanese firm’s Dimensity 9300 chip as a game-changer that will help it to steal a march over Qualcomm, the current leader in the high-end mobile market.

The bullishness surrounding MediaTek’s shares is growing. Analysts have boosted estimates for the company’s earnings per share by 13% since the end of July, while short interest on the stock has fallen from a June peak. They have also lifted its estimated price target by 27% since a July low.

MediaTek’s “valuation relative to its growth prospect into next year still looks attractive,” said Robert Mumford, an investment manager at GAM Hong Kong Ltd.  “The handset cyclical recovery and MediaTek’s new system-on-chip — a cutting edge product released at the right time — plus potential AI product rollout, are all tailwinds.”

A lot of the optimism is centered around the Dimensity 9300 chip, which is a direct competitor of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Both firms are racing to unleash AI technology on devices, part of the so-called “edge AI” phenomenon that multiple Wall Street banks say will be a key investing theme heading into 2024.

“Dimensity 9300 is the most powerful mobile system-on-chip and has started to gain traction with Vivo’s new phone,” Morgan Stanley analysts including Charlie Chan and Daisy Dai wrote in a note. The bank expects MediaTek’s market share in the flagship smartphone segment to increase from 20% in 2023 to 30%-35% in 2024, or up from 13 million units to around 20 million.

The Dimensity 9300 chip is designed to address more complex workloads of new generative AI and gaming applications and its launch follows several earlier designs which failed to excite investors. Chinese smartphone Vivo X100, which was released this month, is the first model to use the chip, and this will be followed by the OPPO Find X7 series.

The stock is trading at about 17 times forward estimated earnings, roughly in line with its five-year average. With a market capitalization of over $47 billion, MediaTek ranks as the the island’s second-largest listed company, after only Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd.

Smartphone Boom

The company’s sales are expected to grow 14% this quarter from last year, snapping four straight quarters of year-on-year decline, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

MediaTek said in its earnings call that its inventory has fallen for five straight quarters and the days of inventory reached a healthy level of 90 at the end of the third quarter. Mobile phone sales, which contributed about half of the firm’s revenue in the three months through September, gained 19% on quarter, thanks to restocking demand and new 4G and 5G launches, management said.

The rally in MediaTek’s shares also reflects the recovery in China’s smartphone industry, which registered double-digit growth in October. Phone sales in the world’s biggest mobile market were up 11% in the first four weeks of last month compared to the same period a year ago, according to Counterpoint Research data.

Tech Chart of the Day

Apple Inc. briefly breached $3 trillion in market value as tech stocks extended their rally early last week. The world’s most valuable firm is the only publicly-listed company to have achieved this milestone. Software giant Microsoft Corp. has been inching close to the elusive level, rising about 57% this year and closing with a market value of $2.8 trillion as of last close.

Google Messages now supports Ultra HDR image sharing via RCS chats: Report

Google Messages now supports Ultra HDR image sharing via RCS chats: Report

Google has reportedly added support for Ultra HDR image format in RCS chats on Google Messages app on Android 14 devices. According to a report by Android Authority, Google has started rolling out support for sharing Ultra HDR images for Pixel 8 devices.

Ultra HDR image format is available on Android 14 and is standard JPEG format with HDR metadata. Non-HDR displays will continue to show standard image, while HDR panels will boost the colour and contrast of the image using the shared HDR metadata.

The report stated that there are no labels to indicate that an image sent or received is an Ultra HDR image, but the image gets the gain map applied when the user views it.

Google has not made any official announcement regarding the availability of the new feature, but it is expected to roll out for all devices running on the Android 14 operating system in the coming weeks.

Recently, Google announced that it is adding the ability to understand and analyse YouTube content to its AI chatbot Bard. In a post to Bard changelog last week, Google said that they are expanding the Bard YouTube Extension to understand some video content so that the user can have a richer conversation with the chatbot about it.

Bard extensions for all Google services and apps were announced in September. Although the chatbot did gain the ability to analyse YouTube videos in the initial update, it did not involve in-depth analysis of the video content.

With this update, Bard gets the ability to interpret video content on Google’s streaming platform and respond to detailed queries about it.

Sony to integrate in-camera authentication into Xperia smartphones: Report

Sony to integrate in-camera authentication into Xperia smartphones: Report

Sony in-camera authentication technology

Sony is planning to introduce in-camera digital authentication technology to its next-generation Xperia smartphone, according to a report by GizmoChina.

Sony announced the new image authentication technology earlier this month. The company also confirmed that this feature will be released as a firmware update for the upcoming Alpha 9 III, Alpha 1, and Alpha 7S III mirrorless cameras. The report suggests that the technology will make its way into Sony’s next-generation smartphones, which are expected to launch next year.

The technology creates digital signatures inside the camera at the moment of capture in the hardware chipset that can be used to verify the authenticity of captured images. “This in-camera digital signature allows for the creation of a birth certificate for images, validating the origin of the content,” said Sony.

The digital signature is created using a unique cryptographic key that is associated with the camera’s image-processing chipset. After a photo or a video has been taken, the signature is embedded within the file. This signature can then be used to check if the image has been tampered with.

The Japanese electronic maker said that this security feature is aimed at professionals wanting to safeguard the authenticity of their content and provides an extra layer of security to aid news agencies.
