Sony to integrate in-camera authentication into Xperia smartphones: Report

Sony in-camera authentication technology

Sony is planning to introduce in-camera digital authentication technology to its next-generation Xperia smartphone, according to a report by GizmoChina.

Sony announced the new image authentication technology earlier this month. The company also confirmed that this feature will be released as a firmware update for the upcoming Alpha 9 III, Alpha 1, and Alpha 7S III mirrorless cameras. The report suggests that the technology will make its way into Sony’s next-generation smartphones, which are expected to launch next year.

The technology creates digital signatures inside the camera at the moment of capture in the hardware chipset that can be used to verify the authenticity of captured images. “This in-camera digital signature allows for the creation of a birth certificate for images, validating the origin of the content,” said Sony.

The digital signature is created using a unique cryptographic key that is associated with the camera’s image-processing chipset. After a photo or a video has been taken, the signature is embedded within the file. This signature can then be used to check if the image has been tampered with.

The Japanese electronic maker said that this security feature is aimed at professionals wanting to safeguard the authenticity of their content and provides an extra layer of security to aid news agencies.

Meta knowingly designed platforms to hook kids, claims US court document

Meta knowingly designed platforms to hook kids, claims US court document

Facebook parent Meta Platforms deliberately engineered its social platforms to hook kids and knew but never disclosed that it had received millions of complaints about underage users on Instagram but only disabled a fraction of those accounts, according to a newly unsealed legal complaint described in reports from The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

The complaint, originally made public in redacted form, was the opening salvo in a lawsuit filed in late October by the attorneys general of 33 states.

According to the reports, Meta said in a statement that the complaint misrepresents its work over the past decade to make the online experience safe for teens and said it doesn’t design its products to be addictive to younger users.

Meta didn’t immediately provide a comment on the unredacted complaint following a request from The Associated Press.

Company documents cited in the complaint described several Meta officials acknowledging that the company designed its products to exploit shortcomings in youthful psychology such as impulsive behaviour, susceptibility to peer pressure and the underestimation of risks, according to the reports.

Others acknowledged that Facebook and Instagram were also popular with children under age 13, who, per company policy, were not allowed to use the service.

One Facebook safety executive alluded to the possibility that cracking down on younger users might hurt the company’s business in a 2019 email, according to the Journal report. But a year later the same executive expressed frustration that while Facebook readily studied the usage of underage users for business reasons, it didn’t show the same enthusiasm for ways to identify younger kids and remove them from its platforms.

The complaint noted that at times Meta has a backlog of up to 2.5 million accounts of younger children awaiting action, according to the reports.

Musk to discuss rising online antisemitism with Israeli President Tuesday

Musk to discuss rising online antisemitism with Israeli President Tuesday

Business tycoon Elon Musk is set to meet Israel President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, The Times of Israel reported.

The Israeli President’s Office confirmed the meeting between Tesla owner Elon Musk and Herzog.

Herzog said that he would be joined in the meeting by some family members of hostages who are being held in Gaza, as reported by The Times of Israel.

He further said that he will “emphasise the need to act to combat rising antisemitism online.”

Musk, however, has recently come under fire for his endorsements of a virulently antisemitic trope on X, as well as the platform’s complete failure to crack down on rampant disinformation and hate speech amid the ongoing war, The Times of Israel reported.

The failure to combat antisemitism on the app and comments viewed as anti-Semitic, shared by Musk himself resulted in several advertisers like Apple and Disney cutting off their spending on the microblogging site.

Amid the row over endorsing ‘anti-semitic’ post on X, the platform owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that the social media platform will file a “thermonuclear lawsuit” against the media watchdog ‘Media Matters’ alleging that it “completely misrepresented the real user experience” and “undermined free speech”.

Musk is currently in Israel and is also expected to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit.

Earlier this week, Musk announced that X would be donating all revenue from advertising and subscriptions “associated with the war in Gaza” to hospitals in Israel and the Red Cross/Crescent in Gaza.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote, “We will track how funds are spent and go through Red Cross/Crescent. Better ideas are welcome. We should care about the innocent regardless of race, creed, religion or anything else.

Develop digital forensic infrastructure to deal with Dark Web: NHRC chief

Develop digital forensic infrastructure to deal with Dark Web: NHRC chief

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairperson Justice Arun Kumar Mishra on Sunday expressed concern about the Dark Web and the threat it poses to society, adding that there is a need to develop a digital forensic infrastructure to deal with it.

Speaking at a Constitution Day event here, the former Supreme Court judge also said that public interest litigations (PILs) should not be used for political purposes.

“We live in the digital era which is helpful for progress and development. There is a phenomenon of increasing the number of internet users. However, 96 per cent of the cyberspace is the Dark Web. It is used for criminal purposes such as exploitation of children, destroying the right to privacy, modern slavery, trafficking, and demanding ransom by data hacking…it must be stopped,” the NHRC chief said.

“We must invest and develop a broad-based digital forensic infrastructure to tackle the misuse of cyberspace and criminal commerce. At the same time we have to ensure the digital divide is not there,” he said.

Noting that several reforms have been brought in through PILs, Mishra said, “PIL is useful, however its misuse for political purpose must stop.”

He also said that to ensure that the goal of the Constitution is achieved, violence-free elections must be ensured.

“Violence has no place in the democratic process. Fair election is recognised as a human right,” he said.

“The time has come to distinguish between the promise made to voters to create an egalitarian social order…and when freebies promised will be equal to luring voters by forbidden means in election. The same needs to be determined at the appropriate level and forum, if necessary by specific legislation,” he said.

Talking about gender equality, the human rights panel chief said the time has come to define the phrase “gender equality”.

“Women are still discriminated against, they should enjoy the same rights,” he said.

Mishra also said the Constitution enshrines the spirit of ‘Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam’ (world is one family) and added it has secured our past and present and will ensure a better future for the generations to come.
