OnePlus Pad Go review: Affordable tablet good for entertainment, learning

OnePlus Pad Go review: Affordable tablet good for entertainment, learning

Chinese electronics manufacturer OnePlus has recently introduced the Pad Go, a tablet targeted at the Indian market. Priced starting at Rs 19,999, the OnePlus Pad Go offers a large display, Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity, and audio powered by Dolby Atmos. On the surface, this tablet appears to be a practical Android device for those on a budget. Is it? Let us find out:

Design

The OnePlus Pad Go showcases a sleek design, resembling its premium counterpart, the OnePlus Pad. Its front features a flat screen that dominates the entire profile, albeit with noticeable bezels on all sides. The rear is constructed from metal, with a thin plastic strip running across the top for a dual-texture finish, providing a touch of novelty to the overall design. However, it is less successful at concealing fingerprints. The placement of the rear camera in landscape mode may disrupt your grip when using the tablet in portrait mode. Nevertheless, the tablet’s rounded edges and lightweight build make it comfortable to hold and carry.

Display and Audio

The OnePlus Pad Go boasts an 11.35-inch display with symmetrical bezels on all sides, offering a comfortable surface for your palm and fingers to rest while holding the device, thereby preventing unintended touches on the screen. The display features a 2.4K resolution, delivering sharp visuals despite being an LCD panel. With a 90Hz refresh rate, the overall display experience is smooth and responsive.

Regarding audio, the OnePlus Pad Go incorporates a quad-speaker setup, with dual speaker grills on each side when held in landscape orientation. OnePlus refers to this as Omni-bearing Sound Field technology, which provides multi-directional sound support. While the speakers produce loud audio, they may sound distorted and grainy at maximum volume levels. The tablet lacks a dedicated headphone/microphone jack, but the in-built microphones offer satisfactory voice reception.

Camera

In terms of camera performance, the OnePlus Pad Go delivers reasonably good results for a budget tablet. The 8-megapixel rear camera is suitable for occasional photography and document scanning. The 8MP front camera performs well for video calls and conferences. It also serves as a biometric unit for facial recognition, although it exhibits inaccuracy and slowness, especially since the tablet lacks a fingerprint sensor.

Performance and Battery

Powering the OnePlus Pad Go is the MediaTek Helio G99 processor, which capably handles everyday tasks such as web browsing and video playback. However, it struggles when handling demanding tasks, like having multiple tabs open in your browser. While the chip is not designed for gaming, the tablet manages to run graphics-intensive games on low and moderate settings without noticeable lag or thermal issues.

The tablet has an 8,000 mAh battery, which provides approximately two days of battery life with general everyday use. The battery standby time is commendable, with minimal discharge. The OnePlus Pad Go supports 33W fast wired charging, taking 90 minutes to fully charge from zero per cent.

Verdict

The OnePlus Pad Go excels in terms of its display and audio capabilities within its budget segment. It is a suitable choice for those seeking a secondary display or a portable entertainment device on a budget. OnePlus offers multiple variants with varying storage and connectivity options, allowing consumers to select the most suitable option for their needs.

YouTube tests gen-AI tools and features with premium subscribers: Details

YouTube tests gen-AI tools and features with premium subscribers: Details

Conversational AI is available under select videos for Premium Android users in the US

Google’s video streaming platform YouTube has announced that it is currently testing two new generative AI-based tools – Topics summarisation and conversational AI. These features are currently in the experimental stage and available to select YouTube premium subscribers. YouTube has not yet confirmed if these features would be exclusive to premium users or it would roll out these to free users as well. Below are the details:

Topics summarisation by AI

According to the company, this tool uses AI to organise long comment threads under a YouTube video into themes or comment topics. The option to segregate comment topics appears on top of the comment section for those who are part of the experiment.

YouTube said creators can use these summaries to quickly jump into comment discussions on their videos and can remove any comment topic too. They would get the option to delete individual comments that show up under a specific topic too.

This experiment is currently available as an opt-in feature on the mobile app for YouTube Premium subscribers.

Conversational AI tools

This gen-AI tool works like a chatbot to provide answers to queries regarding the video that the user is watching. It is capable of providing background information, suggesting related content, and more without interrupting playback. For select academic videos, the tool can provide quizzes and respond to the queries.

Conversational AI is available under select videos for Premium Android users in the US. Those who have opted-in would see a star icon beside the Like and Share button.

Google Play’s ‘bribe and block’ ploy hurt rivals, says Epic amid trial

Google Play’s ‘bribe and block’ ploy hurt rivals, says Epic amid trial

By Malathi Nayak

Alphabet Inc. used a “bribe and block” strategy to thwart competition against its Google Play app marketplace, hurting developers and raising prices for consumers, Epic Games Inc. said as it began its courtroom battle with the technology giant.

Epic, which makes the popular Fortnite game, is looking to upend Google Play policies in an antitrust trial over whether Google has monopolised the Android app distribution and payment market. The case threatens billions of dollars in revenue generated by the store.

At opening statements on Monday, Epic’s attorney Gary Bornstein told jurors that Google pays off competitors, including those who want to set up their own app stores to directly deal with users, and blocks them from competing with its own marketplace and payment system.

Google’s anticompetitive acts are leading to “higher prices, lower quality and less choice for everyone, all while Google makes billions and billions in profits — more than what it would make in a competitive market,” Bornstein said. In 2021, the Google Play store made more than $12 billion in operating profit and had an almost 71% profit margin, he said.

Bornstein also told jurors that Google lets some companies that sell physical goods like Starbucks Corp. choose their own payment systems, but app developers have no choice but to use Google Play’s billing and payment system.

‘Google Competes’

Glenn Pomerantz, an attorney representing Google, shot back, saying “Google cannot be a monopolist because Google competes” with app stores of rivals including Apple Inc. Popular apps like Clubhouse and Chat GPT launched exclusively on the Apple App Store and Google has to fight to win developers, Pomerantz told jurors.

“Bribe is a pretty strong word,” the attorney said. “These agreements had nothing to do with bribes,” and are instead “part of Google’s efforts to get the support of app developers.”

None of the developer deals or incentive offers that Epic pointed out — including those made to Activision Blizzard Inc. before it was acquired by Microsoft Corp. and Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s Riot Games —  have exclusivity clauses or conditions tied to third-party stores, according to Pomerantz.

The trial is scheduled to run until early December and is expected to feature testimony from Alphabet Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai and Epic CEO Tim Sweeney.

Epic CEO in Court

Sweeney, dressed in a gray suit, sat in the public seating area on the first day of trial. He stood up and acknowledged jurors with a bow when Bornstein pointed to the chief executive and told them he founded Epic while still in college.

The Google Play antitrust fight kicked off when Epic sued Google in 2020. Alphabet claimed in a countersuit that the game maker breached its contract and acted in bad faith when it tried to set up its own app store in 2020 as an end-run around the Google Play billing system.

Epic is the only stakeholder still suing Alphabet after the Mountain View, California-based company recently reached settlements with consumers, state attorneys general and Match Group Inc., all of whom had targeted Google Play in complaints. Epic largely lost a similar challenge two years ago to Apple over its app store.

Epic said in its complaint that Google agreed in January 2020 to pay Activision $360 million over three years after the game publisher discussed launching its own app store. Activision has denied that Google made such an offer.

OpenAI would also let custom GPTs access external data like emails, databases, and more with future updates.
