IIT Madras establishes first international campus in Tanzania’s Zanzibar

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras became the first Indian Institute of Technology to set up an international campus, by launching a campus in Tanzania on Monday. India and the East African nation had recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

The Zanzibar Campus, IIT Madras, will be on Zanzibar Island, off the East African mainland and part of the Tanzanian republic. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, inaugurated the IIT Madras Zanzibar at an event held on Monday at the Zanzibar campus in the presence of Tanzanian officials, Indian dignitaries, faculty, and students.

This historic initiative is being undertaken as part of the Government of India’s endeavour to take the top-quality education system of India to international arenas. The existing campus in the Bweleo district, located approximately 15 km south of Zanzibar Town, is equipped with international amenities designed to meet the current needs of students. A permanent campus will be built soon jointly by the Government of Zanzibar and the Government of India.

Initially, the Institute will offer BS and MTech programmes in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. More academic programmes will be offered in the coming year. In the first batch at IITM Zanzibar, students from Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, Nepal, and India have been admitted, with 40 per cent of the students being women.

The campus will have the capacity to accommodate students in dormitories and provide various facilities. Arrangements for offices, classrooms, and auditoriums have been made. Dining facilities and a dispensary are available on campus, and sports facilities are also being planned.

The programmes at IITM Zanzibar are open to students of all nationalities, including Indians. Apart from a comprehensive curriculum that includes all aspects of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, students will have access to several interesting opportunities during their course of study. These include study abroad/semester exchange programmes with IIT Madras’ partner institutions in the UK and Australia, among other countries, internships with various relevant companies, and a chance to meet some of the course requirements at the IIT Madras campus in Chennai, India. Classes for the first Academic Year (2023-24) commenced in October 2023.

“Today, as we inaugurate the IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus, we embark on a journey of knowledge and innovation that transcends borders. Together, we will nurture excellence, foster collaboration and inspire generations to dream beyond horizons,” said V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras.

The campus has started in its first semester with students from different countries including Zanzibar, India, Nepal, and Tanzania Mainland. A total of 45 students have been admitted for a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science and AI, and a two-year Master of Technology degree in Data Science and AI.

“It has been an honour to bring IITM’s academic excellence to this beautiful island of Zanzibar. We have started on such a wonderful and positive note with a lovely campus and amazing students. We are grateful to President Mwinyi for the faith reposed in us and look forward to scaling great heights at IITM Zanzibar,” said Preeti Aghalayam, Dean of the School of Engineering and Science and Director-in-charge, Zanzibar campus.

WhatsApp is testing an alternative email-based verification method: Report

The email address feature will likely serve as a backup method for situations where users might encounter difficulties in receiving verification code over SMS

WhatsApp is reportedly testing an email verification method for logging into accounts. According to some media reports, the feature is currently under beta testing for select Android users and is expected to roll out for general users in the coming months. It should be noted that the option to log into accounts using email is an alternative to the default method that uses one-time password authentication via SMS.

A report on SamMobile states that some beta users have received an option to link email addresses to their accounts from the settings menu. The setup page also states that others can not read the added email address.

According to the report, users need to verify their email addresses to set up their accounts. Failing to verify their account shows a warning prompt. There is also an additional ‘Verify email’ button to resend the verification email to the added address.

The email address feature will likely serve as a backup method for situations where users might encounter difficulties in receiving verification code over SMS or when they do not have their registered phone number with them.

Last month, WhatsApp announced that it would allow Android users to access their accounts using Passkeys. In a post published on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Meta-owned instant messaging platform announced that the new security option would allow WhatsApp users on Android devices to login using biometrics such as fingerprints and facial scan or a security pin.

Passkey authentication is an opt-in feature and can replace SMS-based one-time-password login method with the user’s permission. The authentication method is available for Android users, however, Meta has not released any details on Passkey for iOS devices.

Apple will reportedly update the entire iPad lineup in 2024. According to media reports, the American tech giant will bring new models of the iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini and base-line iPad series throughout the next year.

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the low-end and mid-range iPads could see updates as early as March 2024, while both the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models are expected to be unveiled in the first half of the year. Additionally, new AirPods are also likely to launch next year, while an updated Pro model may take a bit longer, with its launch expected in 2025.

“Apple could have tried to rush out more new products, but revamped iPads and AirPods aren’t yet ready. The company plans to update its entire iPad lineup during 2024. New low-end AirPods are coming next year as well, with a refreshed Pro model following in 2025”, said Gurman.

Previously, Gurman reported that the new iPad Pro models will likely feature OLED displays along with the M3 chipset. The next generation of the iPad Air is anticipated to receive a performance boost, powered by the M2 chip, while the iPad mini is expected to be equipped with the A16 Bionic chip.

With no new iPad models expected for 2023, this year will likely be the first year without any new iPad launch since Apple first unveiled the device back in 2010.

Google’s antitrust headaches compound with trial targeting Play Store

Google’s antitrust headaches compound with trial targeting Play Store

Google on Monday will try to protect a lucrative piece of its internet empire at the same time it’s still entangled in the biggest US antitrust trial in a quarter century.

The latest threat will unfold in a San Francisco federal court, where a 10-person jury will decide whether Google’s digital payment processing system in the Play Store that distributes apps for phones running on its Android software has been illegally driving up prices for consumers and developers.

The trial before US District Judge James Donato is scheduled to last until just before Christmas and include testimony from longtime Google executive Sundar Pichai, who is now CEO of the company’s parent, Alphabet Inc.

Pichai recently took the witness stand in Washington DC during an antitrust trial pitting Google’s long-running dominance of internet search against the US Justice Department’s attempt to undercut it on the grounds the the company has been abusing its power to stifle competition and innovation.

The case targeting Google’s Play Store is being brought by Epic Games, the maker of the popular Fortnite video game, which lost in a similar 2021 trial focused on many of the same issues in Apple’s iPhone app store.

Although a federal judge sided with Apple on most fronts in that trial, the outcome opened one potential crack in the digital fortress that the company has built around the iPhone.

The judge and an appeals court both determined Apple should allow apps to provide links to other payment options, a change that could undermine the 15 per to 30 per cent commissions that both Apple and Google collect on digital purchases made within a mobile app. Apple is appealing that part of the ruling to the US Supreme Court, where Epic is also challenging most elements of the case that it lost.

Epic is now taking aim at Google’s commission system, even though Android software is already set up to allow other stores, such as Samsung’s installed on its phones, distribute apps that work on the operating system.

Even so, Epic maintains that Google still maintains a stranglehold on the Android app ecosystem and the payment system attached to it and has paid hundreds of millions of dollars to stifle competition.

Much like Apple did in its trial, Google defends its commissions as a way to be compensated for all money that it invests into its Play Store and asserts that the controls over it are a way to protect the security of the tens of millions of people in the US who download apps for phones powered by Android.

Google initially was going to have to defend itself against multiple foes in the trial, but in September it settled allegations that had been brought against the Play Store by state attorneys general and just last week resolved a case being pursued by Match Group, the owner of Tinder and other online dating services.

The Match settlement prompted Google to switch from its original request for a jury trial to a proceeding to be decided by the judge, but Donato rebuffed the bid.

Match is receiving USD 40 million and adopting Google’s user choice billing” system in its settlement.

The terms of the resolution with the state attorneys general is expected to be revealed during Google’s trial with Epic.

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney skewered the user choice billing option as a sham in a social media post vowing to fight Google in court. Sweeney also is expected to take the witness stand during the trial.

Wilson White, Google’s vice president of government affairs and public policy, accused Epic of trying to get something for nothing in a blog post. After pointing out that Epic already lost the crux of its case against Apple, White blasted the game maker for trying their luck with Android by bringing a case that has even less merit.

Samsung announces ISOCELL GNK image sensor with improved dynamic range

Samsung announces ISOCELL GNK image sensor with improved dynamic range

Representative image: Samsung Galaxy S23 FE

Samsung has announced its latest image sensor, ISOCELL GNK, with the ability to produce images with a dynamic range of up to 102dB. The 50 MP camera sensor retains the 1/1.3″ sensor format and the 1.2-micron pixel size of its predecessor-ISOCELL GN1, but boasts an improved dynamic range with three different ISO modes.

The ISOCELL GNK has the capability of capturing 14-bit RAW images in Pro mode. The Dual Pixel Pro auto-focus present on the sensor can quickly focus on moving objects whenever they are in the frame by comparing the phase difference in both the top and bottom, and the left and right directions.

For videography, GNK can record 8K resolution videos at 30fps, 4K videos at 120fps and FHD videos at 240fps. It will also support Autofocus in addition to HDR video in FHD mode.

Samsung has not yet confirmed the specific devices that will pack the ISOCELL GNK sensor, but according to media reports, the upcoming Galaxy smartphones scheduled for early next year can be the first devices to feature the newly launched sensor.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Samsung is working with chipmakers Qualcomm and AMD to develop FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) software for Galaxy devices. According to a report on Android Authority, all three companies are working on the FSR technology that would bring upscaling and frame generation techniques to boost frame rates in supported games on upcoming Galaxy smartphones. The report also stated that FSR software, along with ray tracing technology, may make way for PC-grade gaming on Samsung’s upcoming S-series flagship devices.

Elon Musk debuts ‘rebellious’ Grok AI bot to challenge OpenAI’s ChatGPT

Elon Musk debuts ‘rebellious’ Grok AI bot to challenge OpenAI’s ChatGPT

By Vlad Savov

Elon Musk revealed his own artificial intelligence bot to challenge ChatGPT, claiming the prototype is already superior to ChatGPT 3.5 across several benchmarks.

Dubbed Grok, it’s the first product of Musk’s xAI company and is now in testing with a limited group of US users. Grok is being developed with data from Musk’s X, formerly Twitter, and is thus better informed on the latest developments than alternative bots with static datasets, the company’s website said. It’s also designed to answer “with a bit of wit and has a rebellious streak,” according to the announcement.

Earlier this year, Musk was among the signatories of a petition calling for a pause in advancing AI models in order to allow for the development of shared safety protocols.

“I signed that letter knowing it was futile,” the billionaire owner of X and Tesla Inc. chief executive officer posted on Sunday. “I just wanted to be on the record as recommending a pause.”

US President Joe Biden just signed an executive order for AI oversight, aimed at setting standards for security and privacy protections, while tech leaders and academics debated the technology’s risks at the UK’s AI Safety Summit last week.

Grok is the product of two months of development, the xAI announcement said, and will be made available to all X Premium+ users after it exits the testing stage. Musk has spoken of his ambition to build X beyond its base as a social platform into a do-everything app akin to Tencent Holding Ltd.’s WeChat in China. Grok would be an essential part of developing that — while xAI is a separate company, it says it intends to work closely with X, Tesla and other businesses.
