MeitY to support development of AI chips under a national programme

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) may create a special scheme to support semiconductor chips focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), along with platforms for datasets and computing as part of its multi-year roadmap for a programme for the technology.

The working groups of academics and industry stakeholders appointed by the central government for the India AI programme have submitted their recommendations, suggesting the development of substantial GPU capacity for start-ups. MeitY may carve out a new development incentive for AI chips from the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology.

Another recommendation is to build an Indian datasets platform – likely to be one of the largest and most diverse collections of anonymised data required for training AI models. The ministry was expected to publish the recommendations from the working groups on its website on Friday; however, the report had not been released at the time of going to press.

“This is a deep multi-year roadmap, firstly for making India’s AI work as a connecting enabler for a $1 trillion digital economy growth. Secondly, to deploy AI in real-life use cases that span from agriculture, healthcare, education, fintech, security, and governance,” Chandrasekhar said.

The Ministry also invited industry suggestions on its draft National Strategy on Robotics released last month. The robotic strategy identifies four sectors to prioritise robotics automation in India, namely: manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, and national security. MeitY has proposed a two-tier institutional framework to facilitate the implementation of the National Strategy on Robotics, which will be undertaken as the ‘National Robotics Mission’, according to the draft.

As part of the robotic strategy, the ministry aims to create a Robotics Innovation Unit (RIU) – for standards, sandboxing of robotic solutions – and is seeking input from the industry on its contours. It will be an independent agency institutionalised under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, as part of India AI, to lead the implementation of the National Strategy on Robotics.

The unit may engage with the industry, MSMEs, start-ups, individual innovators, R&D institutes, academia, and government organisations to create a robotics ecosystem. The government has invited suggestions on the strategy with a deadline of 31 October.

The three Centres of Excellence (CoEs) on AI that were announced during the union budget for FY24 are currently being built by the Ministry of Education with support from MeitY, the minister noted. “There will be 10-20 CoEs (for AI) in the country in the coming years. Some of them will be funded by MeitY, some by private, academic, and enterprise partnerships. But we will create a very flourishing and rapidly improving ecosystem of CoEs,” he added.

The government’s ‘India AI’ is an umbrella programme that harmonises existing AI initiatives, from building language models (Digital India Bhashini) for increasing digital accessibility for citizens to skilling programmes, demystifying AI for school students, to achieve the common goal of ‘making AI in India and making AI work for India’.

AI programme will enable to achieve $1 trn digital economy: Chandrasekhar

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of Electronics and IT

The government on Friday unveiled a report on the country’s artificial intelligence programme, which it believes will be a kinetic enabler for India to achieve the goal of USD 1 trillion digital economy by 2026.

Minister of Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the draft National Strategy on Robotics will be part of the multi-year India AI programme.

“This is a deep, multi-year roadmap to make Indian AI work for being a kinetic enabler of the trillion dollar digital economy,” Chandrasekhar said. The minister had earlier said the government plans to make India a USD 1-trillion digital economy by 2026.

He said that apart from supporting the startup ecosystem, India’s AI programme will focus on comprehensive skills in the country, building computer infrastructure etc.

The report recommends creation of India data sets platform to be used by domestic startups and researchers, building GPU (graphical processing unit)-based computer infrastructure to provide resources for development of AI engines or models to indigenous firms.

“India AI computer platform will be a PPP (public private partnership) project that will create substantial GPU capacity for our startups and researchers to train their models,” Chandrasekhar said.

He said India data sets will be a collection of data and may be one of the largest collections of anonymised data sets, which will be used by Indian researchers and Indian startups to train their model.

“Indian AI will also support development of AI chips in partnership with the Semicon India Program,” Chandrasekhar said.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has floated a consultation paper on the National Strategy on Robotics, which is open for public comments till October 31.

Sonos launches Era 300 and Era 100 smart speakers in India: Details here

Sonos Era 300 and Era 100

Sonos on Friday launched in India the Sonos Era 300 and Sonos Era 100 smart speakers. The US-based audio device maker described the Era 300 as a bold, revolutionary speaker built to deliver the best experience for out loud spatial audio with Dolby Atmos, while the Era 100 is said to be a refresh based on its Sonos One. The Sonos Era 300 (Rs 54,999) and Sonos Era 100 (Rs 29,999) will be available from Oct 20, with pre-order available at Sonos online store from Oct 15.

Sonos Era 300: Details

The Era 300 boasts six audio drivers powered by Dolby Atmos for free-flowing sound in all directions – left, right, forward and upward. The smart speaker has an hourglass design with attention on details to maximise dispersion of surround sound. It is the brand’s first speaker that delivers multi-channel surround sound when used as home theater rears – pair two speakers with Arc or Beam (Gen 2) to create a supercharged Dolby Atmos experience.

Sonos Era 100: Details

Slightly larger than its predecessor Sonos One, the Era 100 features new hardware and software, with next-gen acoustics and design for detailed stereo sound and deep bass. The smart speaker has two angled tweeters and a large mid-woofer. It is touted by the company as a smart speaker packed full of audio and tech enhancements, with modern design that makes it a chic accent piece. Like the Era 300, adding two Era 100 speakers as rears with your soundbar would allow you to create a surround sound system, or simply pair two together for room-filling stereo sound.

Both the Era 100 and Era 300 feature an intuitive new user interface, including a new capacitive volume slider for simple control that complements quick and private control of your music with Sonos Voice Control, the Sonos app, Apple AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth.
