OpenAI launches DALL-E 3 image generator with ChatGPT integration

DALL-E 3 allows users to make accurate prompts for generating desired images through ChatGPT’s conversational interface

OpenAI released the third generation of DALL-E, its latest AI art tool, on September 20 to a group of testers. DALL-E 3 uses OpenAI’s chatbot- ChatGPT, to create more complex and carefully composed works of art by automatically expanding on a prompt to give the generator more detailed and coherent instruction.

DALL-E 3 allows users to make accurate prompts for generating desired images through ChatGPT’s conversational interface. It also lets users refine a creation through prompts generated by ChatGPT. Text generating ability of the AI-chatbot removes some of the complexity required to refine the text that is fed to the program.

Launched in 2022, DALL-E is based on an algorithm that is trained on a large data set of labelled images. It uses a series of algorithms capable of learning an image’s structure to predict how to generate an image for a given prompt. With large data set training DALL-E is capable of producing complex images.

By integrating DALL-E to ChatGPT, OpenAI can solidify its Chatbot platform as a generative AI hub for producing original texts and Images, artwork, and more.

On September 19, Google announced a new set of features for its GenAI chatbot, Bard, which enables it to integrate with various Google tools and services, including Maps, YouTube, Drive, Docs. Previously, OpenAI has also provided options for integrating ChatGPT with various online services such as Expedia, OpenTable, and Wikipedia. However, this is the first instance where the company has integrated its chatbot with an image generator.

Generative AI-powered Alexa: What’s new coming to Amazon’s voice assistant

Generative AI-powered Alexa: What’s new coming to Amazon’s voice assistant

Amazon has unveiled the next generation of its Alexa voice assistant, powered by Generative AI, during an in-person event on September 20th. It was also revealed that this updated version of Alexa would be built upon the Alexa Large Language Model (LLM), and it will extend its capabilities to older Echo devices, including the first-generation Echo Plus. Here are all the new major Gen-AI features coming to Alexa devices:

Enhanced Natural Conversations

Amazon says that the AI-driven Alexa will respond in a more natural and engaging manner, allowing for extended conversations with users. The updated voice assistant will even permit users with Visual ID to initiate conversations by simply facing the device without needing wake-up prompts.

Advanced Smart Home Control

The new LLM model will empower Alexa to process multiple commands simultaneously. For instance, if a user commands Alexa to close the curtains in the living room while turning on the lights, Alexa will execute both actions at once, eliminating the need for separate prompts for each action. The AI-enabled features will make input commands for the Amazon voice assistant more conversational as well. For example, a statement like “Alexa, it’s too bright” will automatically prompt it to dim the lights.

Inclusive Accessibility Features

Alexa’s upcoming accessibility features are designed to assist users with hearing, speech, or mobility disabilities. Users will be able to interact with Alexa through their tablets, using gaze-based input to perform pre-set Alexa actions, such as playing music or controlling smart home devices.

Generative-AI features will enable real-time translation with voice-to-text captions for audio and video calls. However, these accessibility features will not be initially available in India.

Character AI

With Generative AI skills, Alexa will allow users to engage in natural conversations with over 25 characters, including pre-set voice options and famous personalities. The voice assistant will also retain conversation history and adapt to user preferences, offering a more personalized experience.

Splash – AI-Based Music Generation

Splash is an innovative AI-based music generation service that will be integrated with Alexa in the upcoming update. Users can create original music by providing voice input describing the type of music they want. Splash will also offer customization options, allowing users to add vocals and switch between different music genres.

Map View

With the new update, Alexa will gain the ability to scan and generate a digital map of the user’s home, allowing them to conveniently view and control all connected devices from one place. Currently, this feature will be only available to customers in the United States using an iPhone Pro model of the 12th generation or later.

Toshiba to go private as .5 billion buyout offer by JIP succeeds

Toshiba to go private as $13.5 billion buyout offer by JIP succeeds

A 2 trillion yen ($14 billion) tender offer for troubled electronics and energy giant Toshiba by a Japanese consortium has been completed, clearing the way for it to be delisted, the company said Thursday.

In the tender offer, announced last month and ended Wednesday, the number of shares purchased exceeded the minimum needed, at 78.65%, it said.

The switch to Toshiba’s new parent company and largest shareholder, called TBJH Inc. will take place on Sept. 27. The move still needs shareholders’ approval, and a meeting has been set for November, according to Toshiba.

Toshiba will then delist from the Tokyo Stock Exchange within about a month. That will end its more than seven-decade history as a listed company. The purchase price was at 4,620 yen ($31).

Toshiba Group will now take a major step toward a new future with a new shareholder, said its chief executive, Taro Shimada.

Even after privatization, the company will do the right thing to try boost its value, he added.

A sprawling accounting scandal, which surfaced in 2015 and involved books being doctored for years added to woes related to Toshiba’s nuclear energy business. It faces the daunting and costly task of decommissioning the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, northern Japan, where a tsunami set off three meltdowns in 2011.

A leading brand behind rice cookers, TVs, laptops and other products once symbolic of Japan’s technological prowess, Toshiba had billed the takeover led by the consortium of Japanese banks and major companies, known as Japan Industrial Partners, as its last chance for a turnaround. Toshiba’s board accepted the deal in March.

Toshiba has spun off parts of its operations, including its prized flash-memory business, now known as Kioxia. Toshiba is a major stakeholder in Kioxia.

Overseas activist investors, who own a significant number of Toshiba’s shares, had initially expressed some dissatisfaction about the bid.

Analysts say its unclear whether Toshiba can return to profitability, even with the delisting.

Toshiba’s shares were up 0.2% at 4,604 yen ($31) Thursday in Tokyo.

The company racked up 25 billion yen ($169 million) of red ink for the April-June quarter on 704 billion yen ($5 billion) in sales, down nearly 5% from the year before.

The decommissioning effort at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant is expected to take decades.

Toshiba’s U.S. nuclear arm Westinghouse filed for bankruptcy in 2017 after years of deep losses as safety costs soared.

Google sued for negligence after man drives off collapsed bridge due to map

Google sued for negligence after man drives off collapsed bridge due to map

The family of a North Carolina man who died after driving his car off a collapsed bridge while following Google Maps directions is suing the technology giant for negligence, claiming it had been informed of the collapse but failed to update its navigation system.

Philip Paxson, a medical device salesman and father of two, drowned September 30, 2022, after his Jeep Gladiator plunged into Snow Creek in Hickory, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Wake County Superior Court. Paxson was driving home from his daughter’s ninth birthday party through an unfamiliar neighbourhood when Google Maps allegedly directed him to cross a bridge that had collapsed nine years prior and was never repaired.

“Our girls ask how and why their daddy died, and I’m at a loss for words they can understand because, as an adult, I still can’t understand how those responsible for the GPS directions and the bridge could have acted with so little regard for human life,” his wife, Alicia Paxson, said.

State troopers who found Paxton’s body in his overturned and partially submerged truck had said there were no barriers or warning signs along the washed-out roadway. He had driven off an unguarded edge and crashed about 20 feet below, according to the lawsuit.

The North Carolina State Patrol had said the bridge was not maintained by local or state officials, and the original developer’s company had dissolved. The lawsuit names several private property management companies that it claims are responsible for the bridge and the adjoining land.

Multiple people had notified Google Maps about the collapse in the years leading up to Paxson’s death and had urged the company to update its route information, according to the lawsuit.

The Tuesday court filing includes email records from another Hickory resident who had used the map’s “suggest an edit” feature in September 2020 to alert the company that it was directing drivers over the collapsed bridge. A November 2020 email confirmation from Google confirms the company received her report and was reviewing the suggested change, but the lawsuit claims Google took no further actions.

“We have the deepest sympathies for the Paxson family,” Google spokesperson Jos Castaeda told The Associated Press. “Our goal is to provide accurate routing information in Maps and we are reviewing this lawsuit.
