Amid surge in cloud tech, Ensono MD says it is not for all workloads

Amid a surge in cloud technologies for enterprises and customer use cases, a senior executive of mainframe-as-a-service company Ensono said cloud is not meant for all workloads.

India Managing Director of Ensono, Raj Bagga spoke to PTI as the company makes a foray into hybrid solutions for enterprise data.

The government recently imposed restrictions on import of micro computers, large or mainframe computers, and certain data processing machines.

Mainframe computers, informally called mainframe, are used by large organizations for bulk data processing for tasks such as censuses, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning, and large-scale transaction processing – especially by large companies having sensitive information.

Earlier, companies used to see the cloud only approach, moving 100 per cent to cloud, but that thinking is changing drastically. People are realizing that cloud is not for all the workloads and suitable for that, Bagga said.

On mainframe technology applications, Bagga said, Chandrayaan-3’s head mentioned that one of the platforms they used which was making this successful was the mainframe technology. Mainframe is the one wherein we support the large insurance providers, banking, retailers, healthcare, a lot of government sector which run this platform now.

Ensono merged with Wipro-hosted data center business, and Bagga, a Wipro veteran with 26 years of experience, took helm of the company after the acquisition in 2018.

When Wipro or most Indian IT service providers look at data centre business, they are more into asset light business and they don’t want to carry assets of larger extent because data center and private cloud or mainframe business required a lot of capital investment and these companies are more interested in an asset light kind of model, Bagga said.

Ensono has grown its revenue by 50 per cent over the last 5 years and increased its India employee base by 26 per cent over the same period, he said.

Headcount of the company has grown from 450 employees in 2018 to over 1,500 in present date, he added.

Ensono’s revenue last year touched USD 775 million and is expected to reach USD 900 million this year. Bagga said the company invests about 3 to 5 per cent of revenue in innovation.

Speaking on companies preferring to stick to mainframe technologies amid concerns of enterprise cloud data used for training Generative AI, Bagga said, Considering we are a data center provider, so we follow all the security requirement for SCCM to PCI and all the ISO 27,000. All those things we have certified to ensure that our data, data privacy and data risk is mitigated.

Bagga also shed light on Ensono’s steering committee for Gen AI headed by their CTO, comprising leaders from all functions, including HR, finance and legal.

The company along with Microsoft Azure is also working on an undisclosed solution for hybrid cloud by which the mainframe kind of services would be sitting in data centers by which one further minimizes the data travelling between the public and private cloud.

HMD Global to launch a new mobile phone brand line parallel to Nokia: CEO

HMD Global to launch a new mobile phone brand line parallel to Nokia: CEO

The new line of devices under the HMD brand will coexist alongside their Nokia brand

Finnish mobile phone maker and Nokia’s official brand licensee HMD Global has said that the company is going to make devices under a new HMD brand name. In a LinkedIn announcement on September 11, HMD Global CEO Jean-Francois Baril announced that it plans to introduce a new brand of mobile devices. The new line of devices under the HMD brand will coexist alongside their Nokia brand.

“It has been a great journey as ‘HMD – the home of Nokia phones’ – an exclusive position we have held for the past six years, Now we are ready for the next step on our journey – to enter the market independently as a force to create a new world for telecommunications focused on consumer needs,” said Baril.

Although HMD Global has not provided any information regarding new products under the new brand name, it is expected that Foxconn, on whom HMD Global has relied for making Android phones under Nokia brand line will continue making devices for the company under the new brand as well.

For the past few years, HMD Global, in partnership with Nokia, has focused on the budget and the mid tier smartphone segment and it is highly likely that the brand will follow the same route to establish itself.

HMD Global was started by former Nokia executives with the aim to re-establish the brand’s name and bring Android-based smartphones to the consumer market after Microsoft abandoned its rights to the Nokia brand in 2016. The company is largely run by ex-Nokia executives so the move can prove to be an opportunity for the company to reclaim some of the brand’s legacy under a new name.

Spotify rolls out Showcase feature for artists to amplify work on platform

Spotify rolls out Showcase feature for artists to amplify work on platform

Spotify, the Swedish audio streaming service, has launched a feature called Showcase that will allow artists to promote their work directly on the streaming app’s revamped home feed. Artists can create a mobile card that can feature a particular song or an entire album as a mobile banner ad, strategically targeting particular types of listeners across 30 markets initially. The card will show its sponsored recommendation.

Homefeed is the most prominent section where the user visits frequently. According to Spotify, Showcase will empower artists to share their music if it is a new release or a lesser-known track, and many more. However, artists need to meet certain eligibility criteria like needing to have accumulated at least 1,000 streams over the past 28 days in one of the available target markets. Additionally, the billing country for the artist’s team must be set to the United States.

The artists can set their budget within specified limits according to the CPC (Cost Per Click) model.  CPC is a pricing model that charges advertisers for the number of times their ads were displayed to a targeted audience. The new feature will also allow users to customise their card with their own headlines, like “new music, recently released, release anniversary, getting buzz,” and more, Spotify suggests, so users know why the music is being promoted.

This feature will be available for artists in the United States in the next week and for a global audience in the coming week.

Recently, Spotify rolled out “Songwriter Promo Cars” a tool for songwriters to promote and highlight songs and get discovered by new listeners and potential collaborators.

Threads rolls out X-inspired quote post feature on web client: Details here

Threads rolls out X-inspired quote post feature on web client: Details here

Meta’s micro-blogging platform Threads has announced quote posts feature in yet another effort to offer the user experience similar to its competitor X (formerly Twitter). Users can now quote a post on Threads, similar to the X, on the web client. This feature has been missing since the launch of the platform in July this year.

Additionally, Threads introduced a thread feature for its users to get the notifications for 24 hours from any account without the need of following them. Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, introduced the new features in a post on his Instagram profile.

Last week, Threads announced a keyword search feature in India. This feature is available on both mobile and the web version. It allows users to search for posts on Threads.

In related companies’ news, Threads reportedly blocked searches for Covid-19 related topics. According to media reports, Threads showed black screen on searches related to “Covid” and “coronavirus” terms.

After the launch in July, Thread had become the fastest app to cross the 100 million mark. However, the platform has since seen a usage downfall.

Threads is an X-like social media platform where users can follow and connect with friends and creators, including the people they follow on Instagram. It was launched in more than 100 countries for iOS and Android users this year in July
