Apple to update iPhone 12 in France after regulator flagged radiation limit

Apple to update iPhone 12 in France after regulator flagged radiation limit

Apple has agreed to install updates for the iPhone 12 in France after French regulators ordered the company to stop selling the model because it emits electromagnetic radiation levels that exceed European Union standards.

The company, which just unveiled its newest generation of iPhones, insists the 12 model is safe and the phones have been certified in countries around the world since its introduction in 2020. It says the problem raised by the French government agency that manages wireless communications frequencies is related to a specific testing protocol.

The French agency said the iPhone 12 recently failed one of two types of tests for electromagnetic waves capable of being absorbed by the body. On Tuesday, France’s government ordered a halt to sales of the iPhone 12 and told Apple to issue a software update to address the problem or face a recall.

Apple said in a statement Friday that it will issue a software update for users in France to accommodate the protocol used by French regulators. It did not elaborate.

The French ban could have extended to all 27 EU countries after three months if Apple had refused to issue updates and if no other government objected, European Commission spokesperson Sonya Gospodinova said Thursday.

France’s digital affairs minister said the iPhone 12’s radiation levels are still much lower than what scientific studies consider potentially harmful to users, and the radiation agency acknowledged that its tests don’t reflect typical phone use.

Cellphones have been labeled as possible carcinogens by the World Health Organization’s cancer research arm, putting them in the same category as coffee, diesel fumes and the pesticide DDT. The radiation produced by cellphones cannot directly damage DNA and is different from stronger types of radiation like X-rays or ultraviolet light.

Experts have recommended that people concerned about their cellphone radiation exposure use earphones or switch to texting.

Samsung may introduce Galaxy Ring fitness tracker at Unpacked event in 2024

Samsung may introduce Galaxy Ring fitness tracker at Unpacked event in 2024

Representative Image: Noise Luna Ring

Samsung is reportedly working on a smart ring named ‘Galaxy Ring’. The rumoured smart ring could be worn on a finger that would potentially make it the smallest health tracking device that the Korean electronic brand has to offer. According to news reports, the alleged Galaxy Ring would be capable of monitoring heart rate, sleep quality, and track physical activities similar to the Galaxy Watch.

According to a report by Galaxyclub, Samsung reportedly trademarked the name ‘Galaxy Ring’ back in February this year. The report also suggests that a filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) says that the new smart device will collect and measure health data and sleep patterns.

Although there has been no official indication by the company regarding the development of a new health tracking device, rumours suggest that the new wearable device by Samsung will have health-tracking capabilities enabled by a PPG (Photoplethysmography) sensor. A PPG sensor works by utilising light to measure the changes in blood volume.

According to SamMobile, some Galaxy Wearable app users in South Korea have discovered a new icon that resembles a ring on the application. This new update has fuelled the speculation that the device’s release date might be closer than previously anticipated. According to media reports, the ‘Galaxy Ring’ will debut next year at the ‘Galaxy Unpacked’ event alongside the Galaxy S24 smartphone.

Earlier this year, India-based smart wearable manufacturer Noise unveiled a smart ring named ‘Luna Ring’ with built-in sensors for health and fitness related data monitoring. Luna Ring features a 13.6mm fighter-jet grade titanium body. The smart ring gets an infrared PPG sensor, skin temperature sensor and 3-axis accelerometer sensors.

Zebronics ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 review: Affordable sound bar with Dolby Atmos

Zebronics ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 review: Affordable sound bar with Dolby Atmos

Home-grown consumer technology brand Zebronics has recently introduced the ZEB-Juke Bar 1000. Priced at Rs 9,999, this sound bar offers an affordable option with Dolby Atmos support. It is a 2.1-channel audio system consisting of a main bar equipped with two dynamic audio drivers and a wired sub-woofer. The sound bar boasts a peak audio output of 150W, with 60W coming from the main bar and 90W from the sub-woofer. In terms of price and specifications, the ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 appears to be a promising entry-level sound bar system. But does it live up to these expectations? Let us delve into it:

Design

The ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 boasts a premium design, featuring a glossy finish on the main bar and a smooth matte finish on the sub-woofer. The main bar is rectangular in shape, with more depth than height, making it suitable for easy placement on a table under the TV. It also supports wall mount installation, although I would not recommend this option due to the location of its ports on the backside.

Speaking of ports, there is an HDMI-in with support for Enhanced Audio Return Channel (e-ARC), a USB-A port for thumb drives, AUX, optical in, power input, and audio out for the wired sub-woofer. Additionally, it offers Bluetooth v5.3 for wireless connectivity.

When it comes to the design, the sound bar features a metallic grille on the front, concealing the mesh-covered left and right channel speakers and a centrally aligned small LED display. The control buttons, circular in shape and made of rubber, are located on the top side.

Features

While the ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 may not be packed with features, it covers the essentials effectively. It comes with a wireless remote control that includes dedicated buttons for adjusting bass and treble. Furthermore, the remote provides quick access to limited audio presets, including movie, game, and music modes. Like other audio systems in its category, this sound bar supports a 3D effect that enhances the soundstage for a more immersive surround sound experience. Activating the 3D effect is as simple as pressing the dedicated button on the remote control.

Sound quality

The ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 offers good sound quality for a 2.1-channel audio system. The speakers deliver loud and clear audio with a commendable bass response when combined with the wired subwoofer. With the option to adjust treble and bass via the remote control, it is easy to customise the audio output to suit personal preferences. However, the ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 falls short in delivering on its core features – Dolby Atmos and eARC.

Dolby Atmos is a sound virtualisation technology that utilises both channel-based and object-based audio to enhance existing surround sound effects. It is best experienced on audio systems with height channels, which the ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 lacks. Furthermore, the 2.1-channel configuration does not amplify the sound to a level where the Dolby Atmos difference is discernible. Similarly, while the eARC function enables lossless Hi-Res audio over HDMI, the limited audio channeling hampers the overall experience.

Verdict

The Zebronics ZEB-Juke Bar 1000 proves to be a competent 2.1-channel sound bar but falls short as a Dolby Atmos audio system. With that said, there are 5.1-channel sound bars available from other brands in the same price range that offer better value for money, despite lacking Dolby Atmos and e-ARC capabilities.
