Zuckerberg’s real threat is still TikTok, rather than former Twitter

Zuckerberg’s real threat is still TikTok, rather than former Twitter

Threads, the simple, bare-bones text-based social network created by Facebook owner Meta, burst onto the scene during a particularly bad week for the rival then still known as Twitter. It quickly amassed 100 million signups a huge feat for a newcomer in the space and was dubbed as a Twitter killer.

By week two, though, signups began to drop off. As of Aug 7, the number of people who used Threads daily hovered around 10 million on Android phones, down from 49 million when it launched a month earlier, according to research firm SimilarWeb.

Is Mark Zuckerberg’s latest venture just a flash in the pan? That depends on whether it can hold its own against its biggest rival. And no, that’s not X, the former Twitter. It’s TikTok. And the odds are not great.

Mark Zuckerberg may have temporarily been distracted in his sparring with Elon Musk, but the real battle for Meta is with TikTok, said Insider Intelligence analyst Jasmine Enberg. And Zuckerberg still really needs to watch his back.

It’s true that before TikTok took over the role of digital town square and originator of trends, Enberg noted, the role was held by Twitter. But many of the biggest trends now come from people who came of age in the TikTok era Gen Z and even younger kids and teens. And just as with stodgy Facebook, Twitter usage is also declining among teens, according to data from the Pew Research Centre.

As such, text-based social media platform may not be all that appealing to the TikTok generation, where dances, makeup tips, outlandish recipes not to mention the whole idea of de-influencers spread via videos rather than the written word.

Regardless of format, though, Threads’ biggest challenge is being able to find a unique identity outside of being a Twitter alternative and outside of the expansion of Instagram, Enberg said.

For now, its not clear it has one. The app amassed a massive initial user base, including well known celebrities and brands, precisely because it is an expansion of Instagram. To sign up for Threads, you need an Instagram account, and it’s easy to toggle back and forth between the two. Instagram has well over a billion users (by some estimates closer to 2 billion), and the app has been luring users to Threads with notifications to join their friends there.

The question is, what to do once you’re on? So far, Threads’ user base is similar to that of Instagram, and prominent accounts are predictable celebrities, politicians, news organisations, influencers and the like.

It’s harder to find original posts from regular people, unless your the Instagram connections you ported over happen to be a chatty or thready bunch. If you sign up without connecting a well-used Instagram account, by creating one just so you can join Threads, the experience can feel impersonal and sterile as the app steers you to follow big, popular accounts that everyone else follows, too.

While many popular internet celebrities rushed to sign up for Threads and quickly amassed large followings, it’s not clear how many of them are returning regularly.

MrBeast, a popular YouTuber whose actual name is Jimmy Donaldson, has 5 million followers on the app. But he has not posted in two weeks though he has sent several TikToks, tweets (or posts on the site now called X) and a 18-minute video on YouTube, where he has 175 million subscribers.

Zuckerberg, in a recent conference call, said he’s optimistic about Threads but acknowledged there’s a lot of work to do to make it reach its full potential.

It has been sort of this weird anomalous thing in the tech industry that there hasn’t been an app for public discussions like this that has reached 1 billion people, he said. When I look at all the different social experiences, it just seems like there should be one like this.

Maybe so, but it’s not clear it’ll be Threads. As Zuckerberg acknowledged during the same call, Meta has tried a bunch of standalone experiences over time but in general, it hasn’t had much luck. There’s Facebook, sure. But the company bought both Instagram and WhatsApp, its two other successful apps. The biggest one may be Messenger but even that started as a service inside Facebook before it was spin out as a separate app.

(It’s) awesome that we get a chance to work on this, and I’m really optimistic about where we are, Zuckerberg said. But it’s going to be a long road ahead.

Amazon rolling out generative AI feature to summarize product reviews

Amazon rolling out generative AI feature to summarize product reviews

Amazon is rolling out a new generative AI feature that summarises product reviews for customers.

The feature, which the company began testing earlier this year, is designed to help shoppers determine at a glance what other customers said about a product before they spend time reading through individual reviews. It will pick out common themes and summarize them in a short paragraph on the product detail page.

The company wrote in a blog post published Monday that the AI-generated reviews are now available to a subset of mobile shoppers in the US across a broad selection of products. And it may be expanded to more shoppers and additional categories of products in the coming months based on customer feedback, said Vaughn Schermerhorn, Amazon’s director of community shopping.

The Seattle-based company has been looking for ways to integrate more artificial intelligence into its product offerings as the generative AI race heats up among tech companies. Amazon hasn’t released its own high-profile AI chatbot or imaging tool. Instead, it’s been focusing on services that will allow developers to build their own generative AI tools on its cloud infrastructure AWS.

Earlier this year, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in his letter to shareholders that generative AI will be a big deal for the company. He also said during an earnings call with investors last week that every single one of Amazon’s businesses currently has multiple generative AI initiatives underway, including its devices unit, which works on products like the voice assistant Alexa.

In addition to the AI generated review, the company said Monday it will also offer a product insights feature that allows customers to surface common themes in reviews.

IPhone maker Foxconn cuts 2023 sales forecast after mobile demand sags

IPhone maker Foxconn cuts 2023 sales forecast after mobile demand sags

By Debby Wu

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. now expects 2023 sales to fall after previously forecasting flat revenue, sounding a warning about demand for the devices it makes for Apple Inc. and other global firms.

The Taiwanese company now expects most of its main business segments, including smartphones, to contract “slightly” this quarter and over the entire year, as global economic malaise depresses consumer spending on electronics. It reported a larger-than-expected 30% slide in operating income to NT$30.9 billion ($968 million) for the June quarter.

Hon Hai’s results underscore a worsening market for global electronics, as consumers and corporations hold off on spending during a downturn. From Apple to Qualcomm Inc. and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the industry’s bellwethers have warned that a downturn that set in after the pandemic may last longer than anticipated.

Apple, Hon Hai’s top customer, in August telegraphed its longest sales slump in decades, the result of crumbling demand for phones, computers and tablets worldwide. China, the world’s biggest market for those devices, is mired in an economic funk that some economists say may worsen over time.

Apple is asking suppliers to produce about 85 million units of the iPhone 15 this year, roughly in line with the year before, Bloomberg News has reported. That should hold shipments steady despite tumult in the global economy and a projected decline in the overall smartphone market. But the move is likely to increase revenue because Apple is considering raising the price for Pro models.

Hon Hai on Monday reported net income of NT$33 billion, surpassing the NT$25.9 billion average of analyst estimates partly because of gains from sales of real estate, among other items. It earlier posted a 14% decline in revenue for the period, its first drop since the final three months of 2021.

“iPhone shipment from Foxconn in the fourth quarter and next year’s first quarter will be lower than they were a year earlier, due to weak demand from multiple key markets such as the US, China and Japan, and the order shifting towards vendors such as Luxshare,” Counterpoint Research analyst Ivan Lam said.

What Bloomberg Intelligence Says

Hon Hai’s revenue could be affected by muted iPhone growth in 2023 and potential margin pressure due to residual lockdown impact, less-favorable economies of scale, and capacity relocations. Yet substantial scale benefits and in-house component supplies could enable Hon Hai to cope with slower iPhone momentum and cost pressure better than peers.

Foxconn is now expanding a diversification drive beyond China, to mitigate the risks of US economic and technology sanctions, a move that could initially impact margins. The Apple partner’s preparing new spending for India north of $1.2 billion, Bloomberg News has reported, a big outlay for a Taiwanese company that traditionally assembles the vast majority of devices for Apple and other US brands from central and southern China.

On Monday, Chairman Young Liu reaffirmed Foxconn’s intention to increase investments in India, where it already operates 9 production campuses and more than 30 factories employing tens of thousands of people. The Taiwanese company is in the early stages of expanding in the country but is already taking in around $10 billion of revenue annually, Liu said.

Longer-term, Foxconn harbors EV ambitions though progress toward that goal has been choppy. A $170-million partnership with Lordstown Motors Corp. fell apart after the Taiwanese company threatened to withhold funding. That incident underscored the challenges Foxconn faces as soaring costs erode already-thin margins in its labor-intensive electronics assembly business.

Executives on Monday also emphasized their budding AI hardware business, saying revenue from assembling servers for generative artificial intelligence use more than tripled in the first half of 2023.

IRCTC, Delhi Metro Rail sign MoU for QR code-based DMRC tickets

IRCTC, Delhi Metro Rail sign MoU for QR code-based DMRC tickets

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for providing QR code-based DMRC tickets through the IRCTC platform.

The press release stated that the initiative would benefit passengers of both the IRCTC and the DMRC by streamlining the travel experience and reducing the time spent in station queues.

The standalone net profit of IRCTC for the first quarter of the current financial year (Q1FY24) saw a fall of 5.42 per cent to Rs 232.21 crore, compared to Rs 245.52 crore for the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

The total income for Q1FY24 came in at Rs 1,040.99 crore, compared to Rs 877 crore year-on-year (YoY), rising 18.69 per cent.

Last week, the DMRC announced an initiative called ‘CarbonLite Metro Travel’ to educate passengers about their significant contribution towards reducing carbon emissions by choosing metro trains instead of road-based motor vehicles.

The passengers will be able to know on the go about the average amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions they are reducing by virtue of their metro journeys.

The DMRC said: “In line with India’s aim of achieving net zero emissions by 2070, the initiative intends to highlight the pivotal role each citizen plays in addressing the pressing issue of climate change through their transportation choices.”
