YouTube to show video recommendations only if watch history feature is on

YouTube to show video recommendations only if watch history feature is on

The changes will roll out gradually over the next few months, YouTube said (Photo: Bloomberg)

American software giant Google’s video sharing platform YouTube will stop showing video recommendations to users who have their watch history switched off, the company said in a blog post. For users who prefer to turn off their watch history, the YouTube homepage could look a lot different. The feed of recommended videos will be empty. Some users could also see a largely blank YouTube homepage both on mobile and the web.

“Starting today, if you have YouTube watch history off and have no significant prior watch history, features that require watch history to provide video recommendations will be disabled — like your YouTube home feed,” the company said in a blog post.

The change will result in a more streamlined browsing experience, showing only the search bar and guide menu, the company said.

The changes will roll out gradually over the next few months, YouTube said. The company said the change should make it more clear which YouTube features rely on watch history to provide video recommendations and make it more streamlined for those of you who prefer to search rather than browse recommendations.

YouTube also said that once the change rolls out to the user’s account, one can change the watch history settings to switch views at any time. The toggle is located in a dedicated section on the My Google Activity settings page.

At the current moment, YouTube provides a page full of recommended videos thumbnails that the users may want to watch. Once the change takes place, users can switch their watch history anytime they want to. However, some users may prefer to look out for videos directly on the website rather than getting recommendations based on YouTube’s algorithms.

Airtel Wynk music streaming app gets Dolby Atmos on Android, iOS: Details

Airtel Wynk music streaming app gets Dolby Atmos on Android, iOS: Details

The selection of compatible tracks in Dolby Atmos format will be available to Wynk Music subscribers free of cost (File)

Airtel on Wednesday announced that it is adding Dolby Atmos catalogue to its music streaming app Wynk Music. The app has partnered with Dolby to introduce the Dolby Atmos music catalogue.

Edwin Charles Albert, head of content and partnerships, at Airtel Digital, said that Wynk’s core strengths of an extensive library and superior music delivery along with an audio experience in Dolby Atmos will give users an enhanced experience.

The Airtel-owned app said that it would add music catalogue from Yash Raj Films (YRF), Saregama, and Phonographic Digital Limited (PDL) in Dolby Atmos format in eight languages.

Dolby Atmos is a multi-dimensional surround-sound format, which expands on existing surround sound systems by allowing sounds to be interpreted as three-dimensional objects with neither horizontal nor vertical limitations.

Dolby Atmos tracks on the latest version of the Wynk Music app can be accessed on supported Android and iOS devices. The selection of compatible tracks in Dolby Atmos format will be available to Wynk Music subscribers free of cost.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Wynk Music and bring this revolutionary music experience to more music fans, taking their music experience to the next level. Whether listening at home or on the go, nothing takes listeners right inside the song like Dolby Atmos,” said Karan Grover, senior director of commercial partnerships IMEA Dolby Laboratories.

Airtel subscribers can get access to a free Wynk Music subscription by recharging specific tariff plans. Users of other telecom service providers can get access to the subscription of Wynk premium at an annual price of Rs 399 or a monthly cost of Rs 49.

You may soon be able to make UPI payments by talking or just tapping phone

You may soon be able to make UPI payments by talking or just tapping phone

While announcing the monetary policy committee’s decision to keep the repo rate unchanged, the governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Shaktikanta Das, proposed to enable “Conversational Payments” on UPI.

Das said this would enable users to converse with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered systems to make payments.

Later, the RBI also released a “Statement on Development and Regulatory Policies,” providing more details on the proposal.

“As artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly integrated into the digital economy, conversational instructions hold immense potential in enhancing the ease of use, and consequently reach, of the UPI system,” the statement read.

It added that the feature would be available in both smartphone and feature phone-based UPI channels.

It will initially be made available in Hindi and English and will be made available in more Indian languages.

“Instructions to NPCI will be issued shortly,” it said.

UPI payments using NFC technology

Additionally, Das also proposed to introduce offline payments on UPI using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology through the “UPI-Lite” on-device wallet.

“This feature will not only enable retail digital payments in situations where internet/telecom connectivity is weak or not available, but it will also ensure speed, with minimal transaction declines,” the statement released later said.

What is NFC technology?

NFC technology allows two devices — like a phone and a payment terminal — to talk to each other when they’re placed close to each other. It enables contactless payments.

RBI MPC: Repo rate unchanged, CIP inflation projection raised

The RBI MPC unanimously kept the repo rate unchanged for the third straight time at 6.5 per cent. It, however, signalled that the committee will be ready to act should food prices drive inflation higher.

With a vote of 5-1, RBI MPC also retained a policy stance focused on “withdrawal of accommodation”. It was introduced in April last year.

The central bank raised its inflation forecast to 5.4 per cent for the year ending in March, from 5.1 per cent in its last review. It retained a 6.5 per cent real GDP growth target in the current financial year.

“Headwinds from weak global demand, volatility in global financial markets, geopolitical tensions and geoeconomic fragmentation, however, pose risks to the outlook,” Das said.

On inflation, Das said the spike in vegetable prices, led by tomatoes, would exert upside pressures on the near-term headline inflation trajectory.

“This jump is, however, likely to correct with fresh market arrivals,” he said. He also added that there has been significant improvement in the progress of the monsoon and kharif sowing in July.
