Laptop, tablet sales surge amid concerns over shortage, price rise

The sales of laptops and tablets increased amid concerns about shortages and price rise following the government’s decision to restrict free import.

Retailers said the sales spiked by up to 25 per cent last weekend sequentially over the previous weekend, according to a report in The Economic Times (ET).

Industry executives said that Amazon, currently running its Independence Day sale, saw a surge in laptop sales.

On August 3, the government had announced that a licence would be required for the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one-personal computers, ultra-small factor computers and servers.

Following the announcement, shops were flooded with frantic buyers, and it was reported that supplies may dwindle by November onwards.

Nilesh Gupta, director of Vijay Sales, a Mumbai-based electronics retail chain, said that the fear of shortage and price rise led to the rise in sales in the last two days.

“Sales are up 20 per cent this weekend,” he added.

However, the Centre clarified that there will be no delays in giving licences and permits for imports once the regime begins, and the move should have no effect on product prices, according to the ET report.

Around 30-35 per cent of the laptops and tablets sold locally are assembled in India.

India imported IT hardware products worth $8.8 billion in FY23, with China accounting for around $5.1 billion, followed by $1.3 billion from Singapore.

Pulkit Baid, director of Great Eastern Retail, an electronics retail chain, said that there was a 15-20 per cent rise in laptop inquiries after the recent regulatory announcements.

“We feel these are temporary spikes of consumers coming in early before the Independence Day sales,” he said.

According to data by market researcher International Data Corporation (IDC), the personal computer market in India declined by 30 per cent year-on-year in the January-March period. Laptop sales saw a fall of over 40 per cent in the period under review.

Explained: Why India restricted computers & who need a licence

Explained: Why India restricted computers & who need a licence

The government of India placed restrictions on the import of laptops and computers to encourage domestic manufacturing and sales.

However, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced that it has decided to delay the licensing mandate for importing laptops, tablets and personal computers until November 1, 2023.

While placing import restrictions has been done on several items before, this move will likely impact major global electronic players. However, while restrictions are in place, Indian consumers may still be able to purchase foreign laptops and computers from abroad as long as they have an import license.

Why has this restriction been placed?

India has imposed restrictions on the import of personal computers, laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs, ‘ultra-small form factor’ computers, and servers falling under HSN code 8741. These imports will be subject to a valid license for restricted imports. This move aims to promote domestic manufacturing of these products and reduce reliance on imports from China.

However, this restriction will not apply to imports under baggage rules.

Exemptions to the license

Some exemptions to the import licensing requirements include that individuals can import one laptop, tablet, all-in-one PC, or ultra-small form factor computer, even purchased from e-commerce portals, without needing an import license. Duties will still apply to these imports.

Additionally, laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs, and ultra small form factor computers essential for capital goods are also exempt from import licensing requirements. For research and development, testing, benchmarking, evaluation, repair, re-export, and product development purposes, up to 20 items per consignment can be imported without a license. However, these items must not be sold; after the intended purpose, they must be either destroyed or re-exported.

The government has taken this step to boost its production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware. By promoting local manufacturing, India aims to strengthen its domestic production in the electronics sector.

Who handles import licenses?

All notifications on restrictions, quotas and conditions on the import of goods into India are managed by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).

The DGFT comes under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and is responsible for administering laws regarding foreign trade, including import regulations.

Most import licenses are issued by the DGFT, although depending on the nature of the item and its restriction or quota, other authorities may be involved to ensure compliance with various regulations. These regulations include quality standards, safety requirements, and national security concerns.

Validity of license

Import Licenses are valid for 24 months for capital goods and 18 months for raw materials components, consumables and spares, with the license term renewable.

Computers and laptops would fall under capital goods.

Types of licenses

Export-Import Policy or Exim Policy outlines guidelines and instructions governing the import and export of products. Most import items fall within the scope of India’s Exim Policy regulation of open general license (OGL) that allows importers to bring in certain goods without the need for individual licences. Items under OGL can be imported freely unless they fall under restricted or prohibited categories.

However, computers and laptops will likely fall into the restricted or specific license category. Restricted import licenses are typically issued for goods that must be monitored due to trade agreements, international obligations, or to protect domestic industries.

Eligibility for license

The portal to apply for a license for restricted imports can be found on the DGFT website. Importers require an importer-exporter code (IEC), a unique 10-digit code issued by the DGFT, to be eligible for the license according to the foreign trade policy. This requires a separate application process if the importer still needs to get one or if the IEC has been cancelled or suspended.

The user profile must be linked with an IEC, and a valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) must be registered in the system. This can be verified in the portal by going to the “View and Register Digital Signature Token” option from “My Dashboard.”

All documents required must be in English or Hindi according to DGFT’s 2023 procedure handbook.

Exemptions for importer-exporter code (IEC)

While IEC is compulsory for imports and exports, there are certain exemptions. This extends to individuals importing or exporting goods for personal use unrelated to trade, manufacturing, or agriculture. It also extends to ministries, departments of central government and agencies, and non-commercial PSUs, among others.

How to apply for the license:

  1. The first step to apply for a licence is to visit the DGFT Portal – https://www.dgft.gov.in/CP/

  2. Choose “Import Management System” from services

  3. Select “Restricted Imports”

  4. Apply for “Revalidation of Restricted Imports authorization” and fill out all the necessary details

  5. At the end of the application, the importer must pay an application fee to submit their request.

DGFT will issue a restricted import license on successful application.

According to a report by Afleo Group, a consulting firm for importers and exporters, multiple restriction products can be imported under one licence, provided it is filled during the time of application.

The licence can also be amended to add or change the import goods applied for, although this may also come with a fee. Moreover, restricted import licenses can also be revalidated online at a price.

Google has added grammar check feature to its search engine; details inside

Google has added grammar check feature to its search engine; details inside

Google has introduced a grammar check feature to its search engine, permitting users to confirm the rightness of phrases and sentences directly through ‘Google Search.’ The grammar checker looks for corrections in a sentence or expression and proposes changes if necessary, as indicated by 9To5Google. Currently, the feature is only accessible in English.

In case the information entered is grammatically right, a green mark will be shown in the ‘Grammar Check’ segment as the primary outcome. But if there are errors, Google will adjust the sentence and feature the corrections. The tool will likewise fix spelling errors.

How to activate Google’s new feature in grammar check?

Google Search has various built-in tools from its dictionary reference to a metronome and multi-sided die, with the latest edition allowing users to look for grammar corrections on mobile and desktop. Google says its grammar checker will see “if a phrase or sentence is written in a grammatically correct way or how to correct it, if not.” At the moment, the feature is “only available in English.”

Simply enter a sentence or phrase into Search alongside “grammar check,” “check grammar,” or “grammar checker.” You don’t necessarily need to add that to the end limit of your query, which makes for a more consistent experience, yet it ensures that Google activates the tool all the time.

If there are no issues, the “Grammar Check” section/card that shows up as the primary outcome will display a green mark. If not, Google will modify the sentence and underline what it changed. This tool will likewise address any spelling errors. Hovering over the fixed version will uncover a “Copy” button.

Grammar check feature: Benefits

Users can give “Feedback” if they find an issue. Grammar check won’t end if “the content will be found in violation of Google Search’s overall policies or these policies for Search features.” This covers inputs that are hazardous, clinical in nature, or contain “abusive language and obscenity”.

Additionally, particular imagery, for example, adult or graphic violent content will currently be blurred naturally when it shows up in Search results.

A support page for this feature initially went live late last month, the report mentions. Last week, the tech giant reported new features in Search to assist users with keeping control of their own data, privacy and online security, which incorporates a feature that cautions users when their confidential contact information seems on the web.

Qualcomm, MediaTek chipsets heat up market for affordable 5G phones

Qualcomm, MediaTek chipsets heat up market for affordable 5G phones

The battlelines for the affordable 5G chipset market for mobile phones have been drawn between the country’s two leading chip design makers, Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Powered by the new offering, the Snapdragon 4G Gen 2 chipset, Xioami is all set to launch the first sub Rs 10,000 price with the Poco M6 mobile smart phone which is up for sale from 9 August across retail channels and exclusively with Flipkart.

The new chipset from American chip designer Qualcomm has also been used to power the Redmi 12, a 5G phone which went on sale on  5 August at an affordable price tag of Rs 10,999.

Over two lakh pieces of the Redmi 12 were sold on the first day through various retail channels including Amazon and M1 online sites where stocks vanished in no time, according to maket analysts.

According to Qualcomm, it is the first chip in the series to be built on a 4 nanometre node and provides a 10 per cent better performance than its predecessors.

But taking on Qualcomm is Taiwanese giant MediaTek which last month announced the MediaTek Dimensity 6100 + which is also focused on budget 5G phones. The company has said that the first smartphones based on the new chipset will be available in Q3 of 2023. But sources say a mobile phone based on it will be up for sale by the month end, leaving very little gap in the India launches of the two chipset makers.

Qualcomm is working with mobile operators to reduce the price of phones further to Rs 8,000 and many manufacturers say that the target is to hit Rs 7,000 by the festive season.

Qualcomm has tied up with at least another two players – one of which is Vivo – who will also launch phones in the affordable segment by powering their phones with it soon.

The prices of 5G phones could see a sharp fall, without substantial compromises on the specifications (which is essential for customers to shift from 4G to 5G).

Xiaomi’s Poco M6 includes a 4G RAM, front and rear camera, 6.79 inch full HD display and 64 GB storage.

The downward trend in the price of phones is key for the proliferation of 5G, especially as Reliance Jio and Airtel are aggressively building their networks across the country.

They already have more than three lakh Base Transceiver Stations powered by 5G radios. Reliance Jio has said it will have pan-India coverage by the end of the year.

Based on data from the telcos, government officials say the total number of 5G customers has crossed 100 million. The service, though, is patchy because the roll out is still underway.

According to estimates, the number of 5G customers could go up further. A forecast by Ericsson says it will shoot up to 700 million by 2028. But this can only happen if 5G phone prices fall even further, making it affordable for customers to move from 2G, 4G and upgrade to 5G.

Chipmakers say prices could fall further with higher volumes. Here, China could be the key.

“China is reaching its peak for 5G subscribers but even China faces a challenge like in India to upgrade others. With China now looking at cheaper 5G phones too with large volumes, chip prices will fall further and India will also get the benefit,” said a senior chip company executive.

·      India has 100 million 5G subscribers and estimates say this will rise to 700 million by 2028.

·      Qualcomm’s new chip will help Indian market make sub Rs 10,000 5G phones.

·      It is working to bring down the price point to Rs 7,000 in festival season.

·      Xiaomi’s Poco M6, powered with Qualcomm’s entry level chip,  will have an effective price of sub Rs               10,000.

·      Its new phone Redmi 12 – launched on the same Qualcomm chip set at Rs 10,999 – sold 2 lakh pieces           on day one.

·      MediaTek’s new entry level chip launched in India in July will power a 5G phone at an affordable price             this month.

·      Two other players will also launch phones on Qualcomm’s new chip, one being Vivo.

Apple may debut iPhone 15 series with USB type-C on September 13: Report

Apple may debut iPhone 15 series with USB type-C on September 13: Report

Following its long history, Apple is planning to launch its latest smartphone, the iPhone 15 series, in September, a 9to5 report said. The company is likely to introduce the device at a launch event on September 13.

Usually, Apple unveils its latest devices in the first week of September. However, Apple is planning to launch the iPhone 15 on Wednesday, September 13. Pre-orders for the same are likely to begin on Friday, September 15 and the devices will be available to purchase from September 22 onwards, the report said.

A report by The Information said that the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max launch may be delayed because of the quality control issues in the new low injection pressure overmolding (LIPO) technology display manufactured by LG. This technology is likely to reduce the size of the bezel by 0.7 mm.

The iPhone 15 Pro and the 15 Pro Max are likely to be significantly superior to their predecessors, The Indian Express (IE) reported. Cased in a slightly curved titanium frame, thin-bezel displays, and a powerful A17 Bionic chip, which is built on 3nm architecture, the iPhone 15 series is expected to be more powerful than previous iPhones. There are speculations that the iPhone 15 series will be the first one to get 8 GB of RAM, the IE report added.

Unlike their predecessor, all variants of iPhone 14 are likely to get the dynamic island and new displays. Most importantly, all new iPhones will get a USB Type-C port, which is a departure from the Lightning port Apple offers with its phones.

Prices for the Pro and Pro Max models will likely be higher than the iPhone 14 counterparts. However, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus is likely to be priced similarly to the iPhone 14 and the 14 Plus, the IE report said.
