Samsung expects Galaxy Z Fold 5, Flip 5 to consolidate leadership position

Samsung expects Galaxy Z Fold 5, Flip 5 to consolidate leadership position

Korean smart devices major Samsung said it expects newly launched foldable smartphone models Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 to consolidate its leadership position in the market.

According to a market research firm, Samsung led the Indian smartphone market with a 20 per cent share in the March quarter of the previous fiscal and was the leading brand for 5G adoption, accounting for a 24 per cent share.

Every day, more people choose our foldables as they offer an experience people want that they can’t get on any other device. Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 are the latest devices that prove our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers through innovative technology,” TM Roh, president and head of mobile experience business at Samsung Electronics, said here.

According to market research and analysis firm Techarc estimates, foldable handsets will contribute over 1.8 per cent of the total smartphone revenues for 2023. The estimate implies that over 6.35 lakh foldable smartphones will be sold in India during the year, totalling less than 0.5 per cent of the total sales by volume estimated for the period.

“This is the fifth generation of foldable devices that we have announced. Over the last five years, we have unfolded newer experiences for consumers in India. We are very excited and will definitely consolidate our leadership with this,” a Samsung official said.

Both devices come embedded with Snapdragon 8 Gen chipset, IPX8 certification, meaning these are water-resistant and will not be damaged even if submerged by up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes and can absorb external impact by folding the devices completely.

The Fold 5 will be 2.4 millimetres slimmer and 10 grams lighter than Fold 4. Company officials said Samsung S pen is also 41 per cent slimmer compared to previous generation devices.

CyberMedia Research (CMR) industry intelligence group head Prabhu Ram said the latest fifth-generation fold and flip models are more refined and durable, and will potentially appeal to a wider consumer base.

“As per our research at CMR, foldable shipments in India will potentially grow over 65 per cent year-on-year. While more entrants are in the fray in this segment with new innovations, Samsung has an edge with its brand salience and market stewardship,” Ram said.

The Flip 5 model comes with 10 megapixels (MP) selfie camera, dual 12 MP dual rear camera, 8GB RAM and up to 512 GB internal storage.

Samsung’s Fold 5 comes with a set of five cameras comprising 10 MP selfie camera, 4 MP display camera and triple rear camera, including 12 MP ultra wide, 50 MP wide angle and 10 MP telephoto camera.

The external storage capacity in Fold 5 ranges from 256 GB to 1 TB across variants.

The competition for foldable phones has intensified with several brands coming up with their devices in the segment in the premium price range of USD 600 (Rs 49,200) and above.

According to Counterpoint Research, the premium segment was the only one that grew globally during the second quarter of the ongoing calendar year. More than 20 per cent of the smartphones sold during the quarter was in the premium segment, it said.

Samsung at its flagship Unpacked event unveiled Galaxy Tab S9 embedded with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

The company unveiled two models of Galaxy Watch 6, which have sleep monitoring, personalised heart rate zone, ECG features, and can provide predictions on menstrual cycle, control camera of Flip 5, etc.

Both Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic will come with a 30 per cent slimmer bezel and a 15 per cent thinner rotating bezel.

World’s largest private satellite Jupiter-3 to be launched by Falcon Heavy

World’s largest private satellite Jupiter-3 to be launched by Falcon Heavy

World’s largest private satellite Jupiter-3 to be launched by Falcon Heavy

Elon Musk-owned SpaceX is gearing to launch the world’s biggest private satellite ever built into space on Thursday. The satellite will be launched using the company’s Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A in Florida. This will mark the seventh launch for SpaceX’s triple-booster rocket, which debuted to much fanfare back in 2018.

The launch is slated to occur at 8:34 am IST on July 27. The core booster is expected to be jettisoned into the Atlantic Ocean and will not be recovered as is the practice at SpaceX.

Satellite Jupiter-3 set: Overview

The satellite, named JUPITER-3, is owned by Maxar Technologies in Palo Alto, California, and is the biggest commercial communications satellite in history. It’s not just the size of Jupiter 3 that’s astounding, but also its capacities and technologies. When completely deployed, the satellite’s size will equal the wingspan of a commercial airliner, estimated between 130-160 feet (40-50 meters).

The satellite is supposed to double the limit of Maxar’s satellite fleet with 500 extra Gbps, empowering it to serve more clients, especially in regions where cable and fibre availability is inaccessible or unreliable. The communications satellite will boost services such as in-flight Wi-Fi, maritime associations, enterprise networks, backhaul for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), and Community Wi-Fi solutions across North and South America. Falcon Heavy will deliver the satellite into geostationary orbit around Earth.

According to Maxar, the satellite boasts of advanced technological architecture, resulting in miniaturization of its electronics. It also incorporates solid-state amplifiers and upgraded efficiency for its antennas, as indicated by an explanation on Maxar’s site. The spacecraft was exposed to vibration and temperature testing before launch. The Thermal Vacuum Testing has affirmed that the satellite can endure the extensive variety of temperature fluctuations it will experience in space.

Samsung expects Galaxy Z Fold 5, Flip 5 to consolidate leadership position

Samsung unveils Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 foldable devices: Details

South Korean electronics maker Samsung on Wednesday announced its fifth-generation of Galaxy foldables – the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5. The foldables bring new ‘Flex Hinge’, which is said to make the foldable experience possible without compromising on aesthetic balanced and solid design. According to Samsung, the main screen on both the devices is equipped with a shock dispersion layer and a redesigned back for a more solid display. This improvement is on top of the IPX8 support, Armor Aluminum frames, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on both the body and display glasses. Besides, there is new Flex Hinge design, which features a dual rail structure, diffusing external impacts.

“Samsung is revolutionizing the mobile industry with foldables by setting the standard and continually refining the experience,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics. “Every day, more people choose our foldables because they offer an experience people want that they can’t get on any other device. Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are the latest devices that prove our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers through innovative technology.”

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5: Details

This clamshell design-based smartphone sports a new cover display, called Flex Window. The display is said to be about 3.78 times larger than the previous generation model. Since it is a large display, Samsung has added more options for customisation, including informative and graphical clocks that can match the face design of a user’s Galaxy Watch6 series, and stylish frames. Therefore, the Galaxy Z Flip5 is said to offer more usability than ever before even when closed.

Besides customisation options, this cover display supports Widgets for weather, music playback control, and media controller. There are widgets from Google also, such as Google Finance. These new customisations and widgets are on top of utilities that were available previously such as notifications and access to quick settings for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The bigger cover screen also enables call history, reply to texts through quick reply or with a full QWERTY keyboard, and visibility of chat history. Besides, Samsung has integrated its Samsung Wallet service here.

As for imaging, the Galaxy Z Flip5 adds AI solution improvements to the camera experience. The flip smartphone gets Nightography capabilities, which optimises photos and videos in ambient lighting conditions.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 is offered in Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender colours.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: Details

The book-shaped Fold5 is an incremental upgrade. It is more of an evolution of the already capable device, the Fold4. Nevertheless, the Fold5 brings an improved Taskbar that has been optimised to enable quickly switching between frequently used apps – now up to four recent apps are at the ready for more efficient working. Besides, there is a new two-handed drag and drop feature to improve productivity-related experience. The Fold5 supports the S Pen, and gets a new slim case for its storage. While the main foldable display still scales 7.6-inch, it is now 1750 nits bright.

The Galaxy Z Fold5 is offered in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream colours.

NASA finding life’s building blocks in Asteroid Bennu to understand Earth

NASA finding life’s building blocks in Asteroid Bennu to understand Earth

NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston will analyse the asteroid Bennu sample once it lands back on earth, which will enhance our understanding of the formation of the solar system and our own planet earth. The asteroid Bennu is expected to reach earth in late September this year.

The precious cargo is currently aboard OSIRIS-REx (acronym for “Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer”) launched in September 2016. The asteroid Bennu orbits at an average distance of about 105 million miles or 168 kilometres from the sun.

The craft landed on near-earth asteroid Bennu in October 2020 and then used hardware at the end of its robotic arm to snag a hefty sample of the space rock. This is the first US space mission to attempt to bring an asteroid sample to earth.

According to space.com, the OSIRIS-REx was built by Lockheed Martin Space and the company offers flight operations for the craft which won’t be needed after it jettisons the earth-bound capsule.

The NASA probe will then move towards the second asteroid, the potentially hazardous apophis, on an extended mission which is known as OSIRIS-APEX. If everything goes well, the spacecraft will slip into the orbit of that rocky world in 2029.

Once it’s on earth, the scientists will separate the pieces of rock and dust from the sample for study now while carefully storing away the rest for future generations equipped with better technology. The practice first began during the Apollo missions to the Moon.

Nicole Lunning, lead OSIRIS-Rex sample curator, told AFP, “We don’t expect there to be anything living but (rather) the building blocks of life.”

Once the return vessel arrives at the Texas “cleanroom,” Lunning’s job will be to carefully disassemble it and separate the contents, all while keeping the material pure and uncontaminated.

As soon as the return vessel arrives at the Texas “cleanroom, the Lunning’s job is to carefully disassemble it and separate the content, and at the same time, he will also ensure that the material is pure and uncontaminated.

NASA rehearses asteroid sample recovery mission

The capsule containing the sample is expected to land on September 24 and will perform a parachute-assisted landing within a 59 km by 15 km ellipse in the Utah desert. The recovery team will try to collect the sample quickly to avoid contamination. Considering the sensitivity of the mission, the OSIRIS-REx mission team executed multiple rehearsals of the mission on July 18-20.

Commenting on the rehearsal exercise, NASA said, “Though the team has rehearsed portions of the recovery operation many times this year, this was the most realistic rehearsal yet.”
