India central to our global ambitions, says Lenovo India official

Lenovo on Tuesday said India is central to the tech giant’s global ambitions as it exuded confidence about the market growth potential.

Lenovo clocked USD 1.9 billion in revenue in the country in FY22-23, with an 8 per cent growth outlook for the next three years, two per cent more than their global prospects, according to a company presentation.

“We are the third largest market in the world today on the personal computers (PC) side. India is central to the global ambitions that we have,” Director of Consumer Business (India Region) at Lenovo India, Dinesh Nair told PTI.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the company’s Yoga Book 9i.

According to the presentation, about 50 lakh units of Lenovo’s products are made in India each year.

The company operates on the commercial, infrastructure, services and solutions in India. Its share in the consumer market is between 12 to 14 per cent, Nair said.

Speaking about the challenges in the consumer market here, he said that affordability is among one of the challenges.

“But the fact is, with such a young population, there is only one way up,” he added.

Noting a post-pandemic slump globally, he said that the Indian consumer market is now inching up.

“(Pre-pandemic) the consumer market…for devices would have been about 4 million units consistently for about four to five years. This went to about 7 million in 2021. And now, it’s back to about 6 million plus,” he noted.

Nair also pointed to a shift in consumer preferences in India compared to 2019 and before.

“Already, 50 per cent of all business that is happening on the laptop market (in India) is over Rs 50,000,” he said.

Operating since 2007-08 in India, Lenovo has 520 stores spread across 250 towns and cities and about 10,000 partners across the country, the company said.

The company on Tuesday launched laptops in addition to its Yoga series, specifically for the emerging content creator community.

Its Yoga Book 9i comes with a world-first OLED dual screen, for on-the-go usage. Priced at about Rs 2.25 lakh, the device has a rotating soundbar, detachable Bluetooth keyboard and stylus which allows multitasking, viewing images across two screens and tent mode for viewing and displaying presentations.

As scammers target movie buffs, Barbie fans asked not to download film

As scammers target movie buffs, Barbie fans asked not to download film

Greta Gerwig has made history as her movie “Barbie” earned over $337 million globally. However, other people are also profiting from the popularity of Gerwig’s Pink prop comedy movie.

Experts from cybersecurity firms have now issued a warning against online scammers who may take advantage of the popularity of the summer blockbuster in a bid to steal bank information from throngs of pink-pilled moviegoers.

“Cybercriminals are always on the lookout for opportunities to make phishing and other scams more attractive and believable,” Steve Grobman, chief technology officer of software security firm McAfee, said.

“They often leverage popular and well-publicised events such as movie premieres, concerts, or sporting events to trick users into clicking on malicious links,” he added.

The cybersecurity firm claims to have documented 100 new instances of malware with “Barbie-related filenames” in the last three weeks alone, with 37 per cent of them occurring in the US.

These digital malwares include Barbie-related viruses and fake videos that advertise free tickets but instead pull up links that hijack personal info with spyware.

“The videos will direct potential victims to a Discord server or a website. There, attackers prompt visitors to download a large size .exe file. As before, the file is loaded with malware, such as a variety known as ‘Redline Stealer’ that syphons personal info, login information, and more from devices,”  McAfee said.

In other cases, the scam may include an email or a social media link that leads to a video labelled “Barbie the Movie” or “Barbie Movie Behind-the-Scenes.”

When the user clicks on the link, they are taken to a website that appears legitimate but asks for their email address, credit card information, and other personal information.

This information is used by the scammer to gain access to the user’s bank account.

To avoid getting scammed, McAfee advised Barbie fans to stick with reliable retailers and streamers, buy tickets from a bona fide theatre chain or reputable app, keep an eye out for dubious-looking websites and get online protection.

Netflix introduces ‘My Netflix’ feature for users to access saved content

Netflix introduces ‘My Netflix’ feature for users to access saved content

Netflix has introduced a new feature called ‘My Netflix’ to help viewers choose what to watch on the video streaming platform.

My Netflix will be a dedicated space in the app where users can see shows and movies that they have previously saved. This will include:

  • Content that has been downloaded, the ‘Downloads’ tab has been removed from the platform

  • Shows and movies that have received a ‘thumbs up’

  • TV series and movies saved on ‘My List’

  • History trailers viewed by user

  • Recently viewed history

  • Reminder set by the user

  • Shows that the user is in the middle of watching

It is unclear if trailers include ones that users have sought out on the platform or the ones that play automatically when opening the website or lingering on an icon too long.

The release by Netflix states that this new feature has been specially curated for those who are on the go and do not have time to browse and find a new show.

It adds, “Keep in mind that the more you interact with and tell Netflix what you like, such as saving more action-thrillers like Extraction 2 to My List or giving a thumbs up to every season of Bridgerton, the more you’ll see on the My Netflix tab.”

The feature can be accessed directly within the Netflix app on smartphones. The home tab and other sections of the app to discover the full catalog of series and films will still be available.

As of Monday, this feature is available on iOS devices, while the Android rollout will commence in early August.

According to industry estimates, Netflix’s paid base in India ranges between eight and 10 million.
