Data protection bill: Govt mulls exempting startups from data sharing rules

Data protection bill: Govt mulls exempting startups from data sharing rules

The exemption may be for a limited period to assist startups. (Representational)

The Centre could exempt some Indian start-ups from provisions of the Personal Data Protection Bill relating to the usage and purpose of data collected from citizens, at its discretion, The Financial Express (FE) reported on Wednesday.

This implies that startups could be exempted from collecting the absolute minimum data required for any purpose and limiting its usage to the intended purpose. Only government-notified data fiduciaries and data processing entities will be exempted when it comes to data collection and data sharing, according to the report.

The exemption may be for a limited period to assist startups in cases where they could be performing data modelling to develop their business models, and to ensure that innovation is not stifled due to compliance burden.

Some legal experts have expressed concern over non-compliance with broader norms and rules while dealing with personal data. Amol Kulkarni, director of research at Consumer Unity and Trust Society, was quoted as saying that the centre needs to specify as to how and on what basis the startups will be exempted and it should also clearly mention the timeline for which certain sections of startups will be given exemptions.  The centre will have to closely monitor how the startups are processing data, Kulkarni added.

Supratim Chakraborty, partner at Khaitan and Co said that the centre should prioritise the nature of data a startup is processing over volume of data.

AI won’t replace the need for human spies, says Britain’s MI6 chief

AI won’t replace the need for human spies, says Britain’s MI6 chief

Artificial intelligence will change the world of espionage, but it won’t replace the need for human spies, the head of Britain’s MI6 intelligence agency says in prepared remarks released Wednesday.

Richard Moore, director of the UK’s foreign intelligence agency, is set to speak in Prague on evolving threats to the West from Russia and Iran, and argue that the human factor will remain crucial in an era of rapidly evolving machine learning.

AI is going to make information infinitely more accessible and some have asked whether it will put intelligence services like mine out of business, he says in extracts released in advance by the UK government.

In fact, the opposite is likely to be true,” he adds. “As AI trawls the ocean of open source, there will be even greater value in landing, with a well-cast fly, the secrets that lie beyond the reach of its nets.

Moore, who has previously warned that the West was falling behind rivals in the AI race, will argue that the unique characteristics of human agents in the right places will become still more significant, highlighting spies’ ability to influence decisions inside a government or terrorist group.

Speaking publicly about spycraft is still something of a novelty for Britain’s intelligence services. The government refused even to confirm the existence of MI6 until 1992, and public speeches by its leaders are infrequent.

Moore has chosen to give Wednesday’s address in the Czech capital, home of the 1968 Prague Spring freedom movement that was crushed by Soviet tanks.

According to the extracts, Moore will tell his audience at the British ambassador’s residence that President Vladimir Putin is still failing to achieve his war aims. He will also accuse Russia of imperialism in Africa and will call out Iran for fuelling further conflict in Ukraine by supplying Russia with drones and other weapons.

Moore’s only other public speech since becoming head of the Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6, almost three years ago also touched on the power and threat posed by AI.

In the November 2021 address he accused the West of being slow to reckon with AI’s disruptive impact and of lagging behind adversaries who are pouring money and ambition into AI and other cutting-edge technologies.

In that speech, he said China was the agency’s single greatest priority and said Britain and its allies must stand up to and deter Russian activity which contravenes the international rules-based system.

Three months later, Russia invaded Ukraine.

Apple Watch AFib history feature now available in India: Know details

Apple Watch AFib history feature now available in India: Know details

Apple Watch’s AFib History feature arrived in India, almost a year after it was announced at the company’s worldwide developers conference. AFib, commonly known as Atrial fibrillation, refers to a heart condition where the upper and lower chambers of the heart beat at different frequencies. In other words, the upper and lower chambers are out-of-sync.

This condition can prove to be life threatening in some cases and can lead to heart failure or blood clots. For some individuals, they do not experience any symptoms until it is too late. It is for this reason that Apple Watch’s History feature is significant because it can track this condition.

The amount of time spent in AFib can change as it tends to depend on a number of factors like sleeping, exercising, and diet, among others. For people who have been diagnosed with AFib, the AFib History is a feature that can track the amount of time the heart has been in AFib. Simply put, the feature can track the number of minutes or hours an individual’s heart’s upper and lower chambers were not beating in a synchronised manner.

Tracking AFib can help people regulate and minimise their lifestyle in a manner that reduces the effect of the condition.

The AFib History feature available on Apple Watches gives users a weekly estimate of the amount of time their heart was in an AFib state, also known as AFib burden. This allows users to keep track of this information and share it with a medical professional.

How to set up the AFib history feature on Apple Watch

  1. Make sure your watch runs the latest version of watchOS. Do the same for your iPhone by updating it to the latest iOS.

  2. On your phone, on the Health app, tap on “Browse,” and then tap “Heart.”

  3. Tap AFib History and then tap “Set Up,” after this, tap “Get Started”.

  4. Enter your date of birth and select yes to indicate that you have been diagnosed with AFib by a doctor, then tap “Continue” to learn about AFiB History, the results and the tracked life factors. Click “Done.”

How to check AFib History

After the Apple Watch has gathered adequate data on the user’s health, they receive weekly alerts every Monday. The alerts have information about the estimated percentage of time their heart showed signs of AFib in the last seven days.

The estimate in the report is presented in percentage, meaning a lower percentage indicates lesser time spend in AFib. After being used for six weeks or more, the Watch can track the day and time of the week when a user’s heart was showing more active signs of AFib.

Instagram announces AR effects, trending, recommendations in Templates

Instagram announces AR effects, trending, recommendations in Templates

Instagram is also completely revamping the templates browser, which allows users to see trending templates as well as personalised recommendations.

Facebook parent Meta’s photo sharing app Instagram today announced improvements to reel templates that include text, transitions and AR effects in the reels editor, and revamp of the templates browser.

In a reel shared by Instagram Head Adam Mosseri, the company said, In addition to the number of clips and music, we are adding text, transitions and AR effects and you can edit those as you see fit.

Instagram is also completely revamping the templates browser, which allows users to see trending templates as well as personalised recommendations, and templates or audio that creators have saved.

Speaking on the rationale of these improvements, Mosseri said Templates 2.0 might inspire users to make something.

We believe that anyone can be creative, and creativity isn’t limited to artistic masterpieces or professionals…sometimes you need just a little bit of inspiration, that’s where templates can come in, he added.

Instagram reels allow users to post videos under 15 minutes. It follows the short-form, portrait format of Tiktok and YouTube shorts, and is popular among users.
