Meta’s Twitter challenger ‘Threads’ to raise stakes for Snap, Pinterest

Meta’s Twitter challenger ‘Threads’ to raise stakes for Snap, Pinterest

By Ryan Vlastelica

The arrival of Meta Platforms Inc.’s Twitter challenger further complicates the investment case for social media firms Snap Inc. and Pinterest Inc., whose share price recoveries lag their larger rival.

Facebook parent Meta is by far the dominant player in the sector, and that is extending to its stock this year. Shares have outperformed by leaps and bounds, with the rapid user growth of Threads the latest demonstration of a reach and scale that has made it a favorite among investors and analysts.

“It’s hard to make a case for owning Snap or Pinterest over Meta, since there’s no arguing that Meta is the strongest in the sector and the one that’s mostly likely to get stronger,” said Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets.

While Threads is more of a direct competitor to Twitter — which has struggled since it was taken private by Elon Musk — than Snap or Pinterest, the service amassed 100 million users within a week of its launch, underlining how smaller platforms may struggle in the highly competitive market for online ads. Cowen upgraded Meta on Thursday, citing the opportunity to monetize Threads.

Amid gains in megacap tech stocks, Meta has soared 161% this year, second only to Nvidia Corp. among components of the Nasdaq 100 Index. Having since pulled back on costs that were exacerbated by its metaverse initiative, Meta has a lever for earnings growth that Snapchat parent Snap, and digital pin-board platform Pinterest, lack.

Meta rose 1.1% on Thursday, while Snap gained 2% and Pinterest was little changed. The Nasdaq 100 gained 0.8%.

For Snap and Pinterest to be more compelling for investors, “they would need to compete with a better product idea than Meta,” said Woods. “I’m not sure what that would be, especially since Meta has this huge user base and incorporates features from its competitors.”

Meta’s net earnings per share are expected to grow 40% this year, outpacing Snap and Pinterest. The degree to which Threads will drive growth remains to be seen, but Evercore ISI estimated it could generate about $8 billion in annual revenue over next two years — near the total analysts expect Snap to generate in that time, and above the consensus for Pinterest.

Even with its year-to-date surge, Meta trades around 21 times forward earnings, below both its long-term average and the Nasdaq 100. The valuation represents a sizable discount to the multiples of both Snap and Pinterest.

“There’s a pretty nice setup for Meta given its valuation and growth prospects, and while it’s still early for Threads, the sign-ups say something about its scale and reach, which is what really sets it apart,” said Hanna Howard, research analyst at Gabelli Funds. “Something would really have to change for us to consider owning Snap or Pinterest instead.”

Meta’s user base is several times larger than that of Snap or Pinterest, as is its average revenue per user. It had nearly 33% of the market share for global internet advertising revenue in 2022, according to Bloomberg Intelligence data; Snap had just 1.3% while Pinterest came in at 0.8%. Google parent Alphabet Inc. has a little more than half the market.

Still, Freedom Capital’s Woods suggested that recent price action for Snap and Pinterest could represent something of a silver lining.

“The fact that they aren’t making new lows could be a sign that the worst of the journey is over, and that things could be starting to turn around and improve. However, even if they look somewhat interesting, Meta is still the play over the long term.”

Tech Chart of the Day

More than 80% of Nasdaq 100 Index components are above their 50-day moving average, the highest percentage since December. This is a constructive signal for the market, reflecting both positive short-term momentum as well as broadening market breadth.

NASA CHAPEA 1 mission: Locked volunteers inside Mars simulator for 378 days

NASA CHAPEA 1 mission: Locked volunteers inside Mars simulator for 378 days

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) began its ambitious Mars mission, where they locked four volunteers inside a Mars simulator, called CHAPEA 1, on June 25.

CHAPEA 1 is the first of three simulators that volunteers will have to experience for the forthcoming time. The four-person crew entered their new home at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston to begin a 378-day Mars surface simulation.

During the process of the CHAPEA 1 simulation, the volunteers will have to undergo different types of mission activities. The activities include simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, personal hygiene, exercise, and crop growth. The simulator is developed to be as Mars-realistic as feasible, the crew will also face environmental stressors such as resource limitations, isolation, and equipment failure.

The four challengers who chose to be part of this challenging task are Kelly Haston, a research scientist; Ross Brockwell, a structural engineer; Nathan Jones, an emergency medicine physician; and Anca Selariu, a US Navy microbiologist. This Mission will last for the span of an incredible 378 days.

Grace Douglas, the mission leader, advances her best wishes to the volunteers and also expresses her gratitude for their dedication to exploration. Kally Haston will lead the mission, and she highlighted the crew member’s passion for space exploration, and she also mentioned that the crew members are excited about the mission. She stated, “We are a fantastic group of scientists working together to make CHAPEA 1 a reality.”

There are different spaces, like private rooms, a kitchen, medical care room, an exercise space, a workspace, a farming area, and even a bathroom. All this is delicately designed within a limited space of 1700 square feet.

According to NASA, the results of CHAPEA and the knowledge gained from the analogs could impact future NASA missions including those to the surface of Mars.

Google rolls out AI chatbot Bard to Europe and Brazil, adds more languages

Google rolls out AI chatbot Bard to Europe and Brazil, adds more languages

Alphabet said it is rolling out its artificial- intelligence chatbot, Bard, in Europe and Brazil on Thursday, the product’s biggest expansion since its February launch and pitting it against Microsoft -backed rival ChatGPT.

Bard and ChatGPT are human-sounding programs that use generative artificial intelligence to hold conversations with users and answer myriad prompts. The products have touched off global excitement tempered with caution.

Companies have jumped onto the AI bandwagon, investing billions with the hope of generating much more in advertising and cloud revenue. Earlier this week, billionaire Elon Musk also launched his long-teased artificial-intelligence startup xAI, whose team includes several former engineers at Google, Microsoft and OpenAI.

Google has also now added new features to Bard, which apply worldwide.

“Starting today, you can collaborate with Bard in over 40 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, German, Hindi and Spanish,” Google senior product director Jack Krawczyk said in a blog post.

“Sometimes hearing something out loud can help you approach your idea in a different way … This is especially helpful if you want to hear the correct pronunciation of a word or listen to a poem or script.”

He said users can now change the tone and style of Bard’s responses to either simple, long, short, professional or casual.

They can pin or rename conversations, export code to more places and use images in prompts.

Bard’s launch in the EU had been held up by local privacy regulators. Krawczyk said Google had since then met the watchdogs to reassure them on issues relating to transparency, choice and control.

In a briefing with journalists, Amar Subramanya, engineering vice president of Bard, added that users could opt out of their data being collected.

Google has been hit by a fresh class action in the U.S. over the alleged misuse of users’ personal information to train its artificial intelligence system.

Subramanya declined to comment on whether there were plans to develop a Bard app.

“Bard is an experiment,” he added. “We want to be bold and responsible.”

Nonetheless, novelty appeal may be waning, with recent Web user numbers showing that monthly traffic to ChatGPT’s website and unique visitors declined for the first time ever in June.

ChatGPT can officiate your wedding, US couple finds new use for the chatbot

ChatGPT can officiate your wedding, US couple finds new use for the chatbot

When Reece Wiench and Deyton Truitt couldn’t find a priest to officiate their wedding in Colorado, they turned to the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, ChatGPT.

The couple shared their personal information with the chatbot, which was able to incorporate it into the speech that guided their wedding ceremony, as reported by the Economic Times.

Technology has become an integral part of the couple’s story, who also met online through a dating app. Wanting to tie the knot before the groom’s deployment to the Army, they faced the challenge of organising a wedding in a short timeframe.

After securing a venue, finalising the guest list, and meticulously planning the wedding, the couple was unable to find a traditional priest to officiate their wedding.

In Colorado, couples can choose any licensed marriage official to conduct ceremonies. This prompted the bride’s father, Stephen, to come up with a cost-effective idea to enlist ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, to officiate the wedding.

The ceremony took place last month, and the video went viral for the unconventional approach. The videos and pictures of the wedding showcased how the AI chatbot guided the proceedings.

However, it wasn’t all easy to convince the chatbot to perform the ceremony. Initially, it expressed hesitation, stating that it lacked the physical capabilities necessary for officiating a wedding.

Wiench shared with CBS Colorado, “It said ‘no’ at first. ‘I can’t do this, I don’t have eyes, I don’t have a body. I can’t officiate at your wedding.'” Nevertheless, the couple persisted and provided the chatbot with personal information, which was then incorporated into its speech during the ceremony.

This is part of a series of events where the AI chatbot has been employed for an unconventional purpose, showing the seemingly boundless potential of the technology.

This could be your chance to get your hands on the iPhone 14 if you’ve been considering purchasing it for some time but were confused by its price. During the upcoming Big Saving Days sale at Flipkart, it is anticipated that the phone will be available at a significant discount.

The iPhone 14 is still one of the most sought-after smartphones in the nation, and if you’ve been wanting to buy one for some time, now is a good time to do so at a significant discount.

iPhone 14 on Flipkart Sale: Insight

The iPhone actually costs Rs 79,900. On Flipkart, the phone is currently available for Rs 70,999, two days prior to the sale. And mind you, we are talking about the iPhone 14 with 128GB storage version here. However, the phone will soon be available at an even cheaper price.

The Big Saving Days sale at Flipkart will begin on July 15 and last until July 19. The discounts on iPhones are one of several deals that the e-commerce website has teased ahead of the sale. iPhones are also featured in a banner being advertised on the website that states there are “top deals coming your way.” Flipkart may have an exciting offer for customers this time around, considering its crazy deal on the iPhone 14 in May 2023.

Flipkart offered the iPhone 14 for Rs 67,999 during the Big Saving Days sale in May, which was approximately Rs 12,000 less than the official price. As a result, the phone might cost anywhere from 60,000 to 65,000 this time. But for the time being, this is just speculation, and we won’t know the final offer until the day of the sale. During the sale, it is anticipated that the other iPhone 14 variants and the iPhone 13 lineup will also be available at reduced prices.

Elon Musk unveils new company xAI to ‘understand true nature of universe’

Elon Musk unveils new company xAI to ‘understand true nature of universe’

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday announced the launch of a new artificial intelligence company, xAI.

The company is established with the goal to “understand the true nature of the universe”.

According to the company’s website, Musk will share more information on the company in a live Twitter Spaces chat on Friday.

During a Twitter Spaces event on Thursday, Musk talked about this plan to build a safer AI.

Rather than relying on explicit programming of morality, xAI aims to create a “maximally curious” AI.

Musk said that by encouraging AI to understand the true nature of the universe, it would prioritise pro-humanity actions.

“If it tried to understand the true nature of the universe, that’s actually the best thing that I can come up with from an AI safety standpoint. I think it is going to be pro-humanity from the standpoint that humanity is just much more interesting than not-humanity,” Musk said.

With xAI, Musk aims to compete with companies such as OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, which are behind leading chatbots like ChatGPT, Bard and Claude.

News of the start-up first surfaced in April, with reports that Musk had secured thousands of GPU processors from Nvidia, an American multinational company, in order to power a potential large language model.

One of the AI start-up’s advisors will be Dan Hendrycks, executive director of the Center for AI Safety. This San Francisco-based non-profit published a letter in May this year stating that “mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war”.

Greg Yang, co-founder of xAI, said the start-up would delve into the “mathematics of deep learning”, a facet of AI, and “develop the ‘theory of everything’ for large neural networks” to take AI “to the next level”.

Musk incorporated xAI in Nevada in March this year. Previously, he had changed the name of Twitter to “X Corp.” but on xAI’s website, the company notes its separation from X Corp., adding that it will “work closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other companies to make progress towards our mission”.

While Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT, he stepped down in 2018.

Musk has assembled a team for xAI that includes engineers with experience at prominent tech companies. The team members include Igor Babuschkin, formerly of Google’s DeepMind; Tony Wu, a former Google employee; Christian Szegedy, a research scientist at Google; and Greg Yang, who previously worked at Microsoft.
