Meta launches new platform to remove minors’ intimate images online

Meta has announced a new platform designed to proactively prevent young people and minors’ intimate images from spreading online.

The social network said it financially supported the National Center for Missing and Exploited (NCMEC) in the development of ‘Take It Down’, a platform that helps adults stop the spread of their intimate images online.

“We’ve also introduced some new features that make it more difficult for suspicious adults to interact with teens on Instagram,” said Antigone Davis, Global Head of Safety at Meta.

‘Take It Down’ lets young people take back control of their intimate images.

People can go to TakeItDown.NCMEC.org and follow the instructions to submit a case that will proactively search for their intimate images on participating apps.

The platform them assigns a unique hash value a” a numerical code a” to their image or video privately and directly from their own device.

“Once they submit the hash to NCMEC, companies like ours can use those hashes to find any copies of the image, take them down and prevent the content from being posted on our apps in the future,” said Meta.

With the launch of Take It Down, people of all ages can stop the spread of their intimate images online, including young people under 18 years old; parents or trusted adults on behalf of a young person and adults who are worried about images taken of them when they were under 18.

On Instagram, the company recently introduced new features to make it even more difficult for suspicious adults to interact with teens.

“Now, these adults will no longer be able to see teen accounts when scrolling through the list of people who have liked a post or when looking at an account’s Followers or Following list,” said the company.

If a suspicious adult follows a teen account, “we will send that teen a notification prompting them to review and remove the new follower”.

The company is also prompting teens to review and restrict their privacy settings.

“We’ve developed more than 30 tools to support the safety of teens and families across our apps, including supervision tools for parents and age-verification technology that helps teens have age-appropriate experiences online,” said Meta.

Amazon Kindle 11th gen review: Ease-of-use helps rekindle love for reading

Amazon Kindle 11th gen review: Ease-of-use helps rekindle love for reading

When Amazon launched the first generation Kindle e-reader in 2007, it sold out in five and a half hours. It was not the first e-reader, not even the first e-ink e-reader. Sony had launched one before it. But Kindle was soon king of the e-reader market. That position has remained unchanged since.

The thing is so near-perfect that Amazon hasn’t had many reasons to change too much. If you have used Kindle Paperwhite, launched in September 2012, then you would wonder what is different in the all-new 6-inch Kindle launched in 2022. The 2012 Paperwhite had a 6-inch e-ink display, and the 2022 device also offers the same, albeit sharper. It now has a 300 ppi e-ink display. It is the same glare-free display which makes it a breeze to read whether you are reading at night in a room or on the beach out in the sun during the day.

The supremely energy-efficient e-ink display has always given the Kindle a long battery life, and the 6-inch 2022 version is no different. It is priced at Rs 9,999.

It now comes with a USB Type-C charging port, and a very quick charge will also last you a really long time. Amazon says if you use this device for half an hour of reading daily with the light set at 13 and Wi-Fi connectivity switched off, a full charge will last you six weeks.

What really sets this device apart from the older versions is the 300 ppi display and its negligible size and weight. The 2012 Kindle Paperwhite also had a six-inch display, but it had bigger bezels, and it weighed more. This all-new 6-inch Kindle (2022) has smaller bezels and doesn’t put much weight on your wrists, no matter which position you prefer to read in. And it’s easier to carry around. With a little effort, you could actually fit it into the front pocket of your jeans.

If you want a slightly bigger display and a bit more premium feel, you can opt for the more expensive (Rs 14,999) 2022 Kindle Paperwhite, which has a 6.8-inch display. That device also comes with a 300 ppi e-ink display and a USB Type-C charging port.

Kindle’s perfection lies in its simplicity and its lack of distractions. The device only allows you to read or browse on the Kindle Store. The only grouse one can have is that reading PDF documents remains a sub-par experience. However, if you can get over that bit of a hiccup, this new Kindle will serve you well and make reading a pleasure.

The Google services like had slowly started to come back to life for some users.

The company was yet to comment on the reason behind the outage.

Last week, Google suffered a service outage affecting Gmail users worldwide that causes issues when syncing emails with Microsoft servers via the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).

Gmail users said they’re not receiving emails and that they’re also having issues syncing their Hotmail accounts.

The company acknowledged the reports and said it was investigating the issue.

“IMAP syncs with Microsoft servers experiencing failures that are causing Gmail sync issues. We currently believe the issue only affects users syncing their email from Outlook servers,” Google had said.

“The investigation so far from our engineering has not uncovered any issues with Gmail application authentication and we are continuing to investigate further for the root cause,” the company said in an update.

Clients not clearing their dues on time? ChatGPT might be able to help you

Clients not clearing their dues on time? ChatGPT might be able to help you

With changing times, ChatGPT is rapidly evolving and diversifying its use cases. Recently, it has proved itself useful to recover money from a client who ghosted a US-based CEO after availing of their services multiple times.

Greg Isenberg, CEO of US-based Late Checkout, took to Twitter to say, “I recovered $109,500 (Rs 90,80,342, approximately) without spending a dime on legal fees”.

He tweeted that the “multi-billion dollar” client refused to pay and he turned to ChatGPT. He instructed the software to imagine itself as a finance department employee and draft a “scary” mail to the client.

In the mail, ChatGPT wrote, “Your lack of response has forced us to take serious action”.

“If we do not receive the payment or a satisfactory response from you within this time, we will have no choice but to escalate the matter further, and all costs incurred would be added to your account balance,” the mail read further.

It asked the client to clear the dues within “three business days”.

“We have a responsibility to our shareholders and employees to ensure the timely payment of all outstanding balances,” ChatGPT wrote. “We hope you understand our position and take immediate steps to settle the overdue amount.”

According to Isenberg, he received a reply from the client within minutes, reading, “Let’s get you guys paid.”

“Thanks to ChatGPT, we were able to recover the money we were owed. We couldn’t believe how quickly it worked. The best part was ChatGPT felt like the bad cop, and I felt like the good cop,” Isenberg said.
