Microsoft’s Xbox makes case for Activision merger amid EU scrutiny

Microsoft’s Xbox makes case for Activision merger amid EU scrutiny

Microsoft’s Xbox video game division has announced new partnerships with and chipmaker as it tries to persuade European regulators to approve its planned USD68.7 billion takeover of game publishing giant Activision Blizzard.

A key audience for the announcements were the antitrust regulators who held a closed-door meeting Tuesday with executives from and some of their competitors, including Sony and Google.

announced a 10-year agreement with chipmaker to bring Xbox games to Nvidia’s cloud gaming service. also said it has now signed a similar deal with Nintendo, formalizing a commitment it revealed late last year.

What it does not have is an agreement with Xbox’s chief rival, PlayStation-maker Sony, which has sought to convince antitrust regulators around the world to stop the Activision Blizzard merger.

The all-cash deal, which is set to be the largest in the history of the tech industry, faces pushback from regulators in the US and Europe because it would give Microsoft control of popular game franchises such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush.

The European Commission, the 27-nation bloc’s executive arm, has been investigating whether the merger would distort fair competition to popular Activision Blizzard game titles. It’s scheduled to make a decision by March 23.

Microsoft first announced the agreement to buy the California-based game publisher early last year, but the takeover has also been stalled in the US, where the Federal Trade Commission has sued to block the deal, and in Britain, where an antitrust watchdog’s provisional report said it will stifle competition and hurt gamers.

Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Washington, has been counting on getting approval in either the EU or Britain to help advance its case in the US.

People will have personal AI assistants, like ChatGPT: Web inventor Lee

People will have personal AI assistants, like ChatGPT: Web inventor Lee

The inventor of the (also known as the Web), Tim Berners-Lee said that in the future, people will have their own personal AI assistant, similar to ChatGPT.

In a recent episode of CNBC’s Beyond the Valley podcast, Berners-Lee said that his new company envisions people having online ‘pods’ where all of their personal data is stored.

Inrupt, a startup co-founded by Berners-Lee, aims to provide web users with a single login that can be used across multiple websites.

Inrupt intends to store individual users’ data in digital containers as part of its work on developing that technology.

The pods will be capable of granting websites or services access to some or all of a person’s personal information, ranging from sleeping patterns to shopping preferences, reports Fortune.

Berners-Lee proposed that once they became a reality, an advanced AI-powered chatbot — similar to the AI phenomenon ChatGPT — could use the data pods to act as a digital personal assistant.

“We call it Charlie. Charlie is an AI that works for you,” Berners-Lee said.

He said that unlike other virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri, the chatbot he envisions wouldn’t be linked to big tech.

Berners-Lee said that it would legally ‘work for’ its user, much like an agent or a lawyer, the report mentioned.

“In that case, if (Charlie) really works for me, I will trust (it) with all my data and expect (it) to be much more insightful,” he said.

“That AI will see in your pods all the stuff you’ve bought from Amazon, but also your nutrition — everything you’ve eaten — your fitness data and (so on). So, if you run an AI on your pod, it’s going to have access to much more cool stuff than any of the individual things like Siri or Alexa that operate over these siloes [where] they’re limited,” Berners-Lee said.

The inventor of the web further said that the power of any AI bot ‘all depends on the data.’

Chip-maker Qualcomm may launch ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’ chip in October

Chip-maker Qualcomm may launch ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’ chip in October

Chip-maker will reportedly launch its new ‘Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’ chipset in October this year.

The information came from a known leaker on Weibo which mentioned that Qualcomm’s next flagship system-on-chip (SoC) might be released earlier than usual, reports Android Authority.

Every year in December, the chip-maker hosts an event in Hawaii to announce the release of its newest chipset.

However, in 2022, the company had made its announcement about a month early on November 15.

It is also expected that the new Gen 3 chipset will have a new configuration.

Having the codename ‘Lanai’ with the internal model number SM8650, the chipset is likely to have a 1+5+2 core configuration.

This new configuration might boost energy efficiency by 20 per cent, the report said.

Last month, it was reported that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will manufacture the majority of Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipsets.

The chipsets are expected to be sourced from both Samsung and TSMC to reduce manufacturing costs. However, TSMC is likely to manufacture the majority of chipsets because of the 80 per cent high yield rate of its 3nm process.

Samsung Electronics to manufacture Ambarella’s automotive chips: Report

Samsung Electronics to manufacture Ambarella’s automotive chips: Report

Electronics on Tuesday said that it will manufacture advanced automotive semiconductors for the US chip design company Ambarella.

will produce the Santa Clara-based chip company’s automotive artificial intelligence central domain controller CV3-AD685, using its 5-nanometer (nm) process technology, reports Yonhap News Agency.

Ambarella’s CV3-AD685 System-on-Chip (SoC) is used for advanced driver assistance systems, which serve as the brain of an autonomous and self-driving vehicle, said.

SoC is a single chip that includes the main processor, graphics processor and memory.

“This collaboration will help transform the next generation of autonomous driving vehicle safety systems by bringing new levels of AI processing performance, power and reliability,” the company said.

The memory chip maker said its 5nm process vastly enhanced Ambarella’s artificial intelligence capabilities.

Samsung said it will continue to boost the competitiveness of its foundry business using its advanced chipmaking technology and try to secure new clients in the fast-growing automotive chip market.

Samsung has stepped up its efforts to enhance its foundry, or contract chip manufacturing, business.

For the fourth quarter, its foundry business posted record quarterly sales, and profit also increased year-on-year on the back of “advanced node capacity expansion, as well as customer base and application area diversification”, the company said.
