For You tab to stay on users’ preferred timeline on Twitter on Android, iOS

has announced that it will now remember which timeline users were using last and default to it when they open it again, on and iOS.

The company tweeted from its @TwitterSupport account on Monday: “This is live for and iOS! Update to the latest version of the app so that ‘For you’ and ‘Following’ will default to whichever tab you had open last.”

Last month, the micro-blogging platform rolled out the same feature to its web version.

On January 21, CEO Elon Musk had announced that the upcoming update of the platform will make it less mandatory for users to use the “For You” algorithmic timeline.

“Next update will remember whether you were on For You (ie recommended), Following or list you made & stop switching you back to recommended tweets,” he had tweeted.

Later on January 29, Musk had said: “Next app update will make For You or Following choice persist.”

AI-powered robot introduced to save lives on Goa beaches: Officials

AI-powered robot introduced to save lives on Goa beaches: Officials

Aurus, an Artificial Intelligence-based self-driving robot, and AI-based monitoring system Triton are being used to augment life-saving capabilities on Goa’s beaches, a state-appointed lifeguard services agency has said.

The incorporation of AI-based support follows an increase in beach-related incidents due the rising number of domestic and foreign tourists on Goa’s coastline, said a spokesperson from Drishti Marine.

There have been more than 1,000 rescue incidents in the past two years along the coastal belt which required assistance from the agency’s life savers, he said.

“Aurus is a self-driving robot” developed to assist lifesavers by patrolling extensive non-swim zones and alerting tourists during high tide. The new addition will help in increased surveillance and crowd management at the beaches, he said.

Besides, the Triton system’s primary focus is to provide a completely AI-based monitoring of non-swim zones, thereby alerting tourists of the danger and notifying the nearest lifesaver.

Aurus is currently deployed at Miramar beach in North Goa, while Triton is deployed at Baina, Velsao, Benaulim, Galgibag in South Goa and Morjim in North Goa, an official from the agency said, adding they intend to deploy 100 Triton units and 10 Aurus units on the state’s beaches this year.

Indian IT services industry’s growth might drop in near to mid-term: Icra

Indian IT services industry’s growth might drop in near to mid-term: Icra

The growth momentum of Indian industry is likely to slow down in the near to mid term as macroeconomic headwinds trigger lower discretionary IT spends, said on Monday.

Ratings agency sees lower hiring by the IT service companies in the near term given that excess capacities were added in FY2022 and expects moderation in demand compared to previous fiscals amid macroeconomic headwinds.

Indian companies have witnessed a moderation in growth in the last two quarters in constant currency terms owing to the base effect and evolving macroeconomic headwinds in key markets of the US and Europe.

Due to these headwinds, the decision-making towards discretionary IT spending has seen a slight deferment, while the cost optimisation deals continue to generate stable demand, it noted.

“Growth momentum for the Indian industry likely to slow down in the near to medium term,” said in a statement.

The slowdown is on account of evolving macroeconomic headwinds leading to lower discretionary IT spending.

It estimated that operating profit margins will moderate owing to wage cost inflation and normalisation of operational overheads partially offset by currency gains.

ICRA’s sample set of leading IT services companies reported a year-on-year revenue growth of 18.4 per cent in Rupee terms and 9.9 per cent in dollar terms in nine months of FY2023, against about 17-18 per cent YoY growth in USD terms in FY2022.

In terms of the segment-wise trend, growth in the BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance) segment, one of the key segments for IT companies, has tapered compared to the other segments in recent quarters. This is partially attributable to lower lending activity.

“Moreover, if the macroeconomic headwinds persist, the mortgage lending and the retail segments are expected to witness relatively higher moderation in growth, compared to the manufacturing and the healthcare segments,” according to ICRA.

The industry is also grappling with high employee attrition in recent times, led by the demand-supply gap, especially for digital tech talent.

However, the attrition is on a declining trend from the last two quarters and ICRA expects attrition to further decline over the next two-three quarters before stabilising, supported by a strong hiring in FY2022, which has addressed the demand-supply mismatch to an extent.

“ICRA expects lower hiring by the IT service companies in the near term because of excess capacity added in FY2022 and expected moderation in demand compared to previous fiscals owing to the macroeconomic headwinds,” Deepak Jotwani, Assistant Vice President and Sector Head at ICRA, said.

Despite expectation of slowdown in growth momentum, ICRA maintains its stable outlook on the Indian IT services industry supported by its cost competitiveness, growing demand for IT services (including digital and cloud services) and healthy credit profile of industry participants.
