Apple iOS 16: 5G software available for iPhones, but do not update just yet

Apple is working on the iOS 16.2 software update to enable the 5G network in supported iPhones by the end of December this year. Ahead of the final rollout, the American technology giant rolled out the software in beta for developers to test. The same software build is likely to be available in public beta soon. That said, 5G software is now available for supported Apple iPhones. But should you upgrade just yet? Let’s find out:

What is beta software

It is a software under testing and usually has bugs and inconsistencies. It is not a commercially released version. Aimed at early testers and developers only, the beta software is available only if you enrol in the ‘Apple Beta Software Program’.

Now, there are a couple of things one must know before jumping on to the iOS 16 beta software just to experience 5G. As stated earlier, it is not a commercial release. It is a software under testing and may have serious bugs and inconsistencies that may affect user experience. In addition, you may end up deleting all your existing data while moving to beta version from commercial. That said, it is strongly advised to not rush for the beta version just for the sake of 5G network availability but wait for the final release of iOS 16.2 in December.

Yet, if you want to experience 5G services before the final release, here is how to do it:

Users will need to enrol in Apple Beta Software programme for iOS beta updates. It is open to anyone with a valid Apple ID, who accepts the programme agreement during the sign-up process. Besides, users can also visit beta.apple.com to sign-up for the Apple Beta Software programme. Once done, follow the steps below to enable Airtel 5G Plus and Jio True 5G on iPhones:

Steps to download and install the public beta software update

Step 1: From iOS device, go to beta.apple.com/profile to download the configuration profile

Step 2: After downloading the configuration profile, go to Settings – General – Software Update

Step 3: Tap on software update to check for update available in beta

Step 4: If the update is available, click on download

Note: It is recommended to back up data and files before installing the beta versions of iOS using Finder service.

Steps to activate 5G network on iPhone

Step 1: Go to Settings and click on Mobile Data

Step 2: Tap on Mobile Data Options, then tap on Voice & Data

Step 3: Inside Voice & Data, there are three options – 4G On, 5G On and 5G Auto

Step 4: Either select 5G On or 5G Auto to enjoy 5G service

Note: While the 5G On will lock you to the 5G network, Auto mode will let you dynamically switch between the 4G and 5G network based on availability.

Microsoft enables Apple iCloud Photos integration in Windows 11 Photos app

Microsoft has rolled out a new feature that allows direct integration of iCloud Photos into the Photos app on Windows 11, and will be available via a Microsoft Store update.

The company said it expects the feature to be available to Windows 11 users by the end of the month.

“We know that many Windows customers have photo and video collections on their iPhones that they would like to be able to view on their PC. This iCloud Photos integration will make it easier for those with an iPhone to have direct access to all their cherished memories in one organised place and is another step in our continued efforts to make experiences on Windows 11 seamless,” said Microsoft in a blogpost.

The new update in the Photos app on Windows 11 will make the organisation of users’ photo collection easy, no matter where their photos and videos came from, i.e. via phone, camera, and cloud storage.

To bring iCloud Photos into the Photos app, users need to make sure their Photos app is updated, and then they can install the iCloud for Windows app from the Microsoft Store.

Further, users can sign in and choose to sync their photos, and then all their iCloud Photos content will appear automatically in their Photos app, according to the blogpost.

Chinese smartphone maker Realme on Friday detailed specifications of the Realme 10 5G. Successor to the Realme 9 5G, the smartphone is likely to launch in India soon. The 5G smartphone boasts a 5,000 mAh battery, 33W fast-wired charging, and Android 12-based Realme UI. Below are the smartphone details:

Realme 10 5G: Specifications

The Realme 10 is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 700 processor, which comes with Mali-G57 MC2 GPU for graphics. It sports a 6.6-inch IPS LCD screen of 90Hz refresh rate. The smartphone comes in 8GB + 128GB, and 8GB + 256GB configurations. It boots Android 12 operating system-based Realme UI. Amazon unveils new Prime Air delivery drone, to enter service in 2024

E-commerce giant Amazon has unveiled the design of its new Prime Air delivery drone, which will handle high temperatures and light rain.

The new ‘MK30’ drone will enter into service in 2024 and is expected to be 25 per cent quieter than current ones, the company said in a blogpost.

“The purpose and objectives of the new drone are the same as its predecessor’s designs: transport packages weighing up to five pounds while flying hundreds of feet in the air,” it added.

The current hexagonal ‘MK27-2’ drone will be replaced by the new ‘MK30’, which will be lighter and smaller.

While it’s impossible to eliminate all risks from flying, “we have taken a proven aerospace approach to design safety into our system”, the company said.

The new drone will undergo rigorous evaluation by national aerospace authorities like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to prove its safety and reliability.

“We have created a sophisticated and industry-leading sense-and-avoid system that will allow our drones to operate at greater distances while safely and reliably avoiding other aircraft, people, pets, and obstacles,” said Amazon.

Earlier this year, the company had announced that the customers who live in Lockeford, California, and College Station, Texas, in the US would be among the first to receive Prime Air deliveries later this year.

Spotify & Google starts testing ‘User Choice Billing’ on Android devices

Music streaming platform Spotify and Google have started testing ‘User Choice Billing’ (UCB) pilot programme to offer alternative in-app purchase experience on Android devices.

The pilot programme allows users to subscribe and make purchases using the payment option of their choice, Spotify said in a blog post.

The test implementation of the new user billing initiative has started rolling out in select markets around the world.

All the Android users will soon have the choice, how they want to pay for their Spotify subscription in the best suitable way.

“In the coming weeks, we’ll expand our test to even more markets,” Spotify said.

“We believe that fair and open platforms enable better, frictionless consumer experiences that also empower developers to imagine, innovate, and thrive.”

In March this year, Google had announced the pilot programme to test third-party billing systems in Android and across its wider ecosystem.

The tech giant said it would partner with developers to explore different implementations of user-choice billing, starting with Spotify.

MediaTek announces Kompanio 520, 528 chipsets for Chromebook: Details here

Chip maker MediaTek on Friday announced its new Kompanio chipsets for entry-level Chromebooks that will provide a faster and reliable computing experience so consumers can browse, cloud game, stream and use Google Play apps while enjoying all-day battery life.

Chromebooks powered by the Kompanio 520 and Kompanio 528 chipsets will be available in the market by the first half of 2023, according to an official report.

“Enhanced power efficiency, speedy performance and reliable connectivity are at the core of a great user experience, and thata¿s exactly what MediaTek’s new Kompanio chipsets deliver,” said Adam King, Vice President and General Manager, Client Computing Business Unit at MediaTek.

Both the Kompanio chipsets support a Full HD+ display and enable users to add a Full HD external display, providing more than twice the resolution of the previous generation chipsets.

Users can also take advantage of dual monitors to get more done at work, connect to a smart TV to play movies or even use a projector in education settings, the report added.

Moreover, each chipset integrates an AI processing unit (APU) to deliver accelerated AI enhancements to applications, along with AI camera features.

The new Kompanio chipsets allow device makers to build Chromebooks with large 32MP cameras for highly detailed image capturing.

The chipsets also support 60fps Full HD video recording for seamless video conferencing, said the report.
