Big Solar Storm To Hit Earth, Warns NASA. Will It Affect India?

Dr Annapurni Subramanian and NDTV Science Editor Pallava Bagla in Merak village, Ladakh

Merak Village, Ladakh:

American scientists have issued a warning that a big solar storm is going to hit the Earth, and it may affect electronic communications. What will be its impact on India?

NDTV’s Science Editor Pallava Bagla travelled to high in the Ladakh where India observes the Sun, and spoke to Dr Annapurni Subramanian, Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, to get a grasp on the situation.

A solar storm is a sudden explosion of particles, energy, magnetic fields, and material blasted into the solar system by the Sun.

The incoming solar storm could disrupt telecommunications and satellites. Indian scientists are monitoring it, and experts at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said they have informed Indian satellite operators to take all precautions. The next few days are crucial for the Earth since the storm is heading towards the Blue Planet.

“The (solar) flare which occurred a few days ago is similar in terms of strength to the one which occurred in May,” Dr Subramanian said.

“So we would expect some kind of interference in the magnetosphere. But we would like to wait and see because it takes a few days to hit the Earth. We expect to do something tonight or tomorrow night to see if anything is happening,” she added.

“The predictions are that it can happen or it may not happen, we will have to wait and see,” Dr Subramanian said.

The strong solar storm in May produced aurora displays across the Northern Hemisphere.

When directed towards the Earth, a solar storm can create a major disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field, called a geomagnetic storm, that can produce effects such as radio blackouts, power outages, and beautiful auroras.

They do not cause direct harm to anyone on Earth, however, as the planet’s magnetic field and atmosphere protect us from the worst of these storms.

Israel Planning “Significant Retaliation Within Days”. What It Could Be

Israel Planning “Significant Retaliation Within Days”. What It Could Be

Tel Aviv:

Israel will reportedly carry out a “very significant retaliation within days”, officials privy of the developments in Tel Aviv said on Wednesday. This comes a day after Iran launched an onslaught of nearly 200 ballistic missiles targeting Israel on Tuesday night.

Israel will likely target Iran’s major oil producing facilities and may even launch an attack on Iran’s major power plants. If indeed this happens, it will deal a crippling blow to Iran’s already-strained economy due to US sanctions while also dealing a blow to its infrastructure and energy security. Israel may further target other strategic locations across Iran.

After Iran’s ballistic missile attack – the sharpest escalation since the start of the Israel-Hamas war a year ago – Israel and Iran are on the brink of opening a new and far more dangerous front to the West Asia crisis.

HOW ISRAEL MIGHT RESPOND TO IRAN’S MISSILE ATTACK

While Israel has vowed to retaliate strongly to the missile attack, Iran has also pledged to hit back again if Israel responds to Tehran’s missile attack with force. To this, Tel Aviv has reportedly said that if Iran responds with a second attack, then Israel will explore all options available to it, including obliterating all of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

According to a news report in Axios, Israel would then also consider the option of airstrikes across Iran’s strategic facilities to decimate its infrastructure while also launching covert operations across Iran – like the one that killed Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Israeli Ambassador Reuven Azar said “I believe the response (to Iran’s missile attack) will be very structured, strategic and pin-pointed or precision attacks.”

Senior Israeli officials believe that the response could also be in the form of “targeted killings of extremists and radicals”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s direct address to the people of Iran, saying “Israel stands with you. You will soon be free” is being seen by many as a veiled message indicating a regime change in Iran.

A DARE TO ISRAEL

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has already been moved to a safe house at an undisclosed location. News reports claimed that the recent ballistic missile attack on Israel was a direct order from the Supreme Leader, which was then cleared by the top decision-making body in Tehran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader however, has openly challenged Israel by reportedly saying that he will be leading thousands of Iranians for Friday’s Islamic prayers in Tehran. This can be seen as a dare to Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described Iran’s missile attack as a “big mistake” and said Tehran would pay for it. “Iran made a big mistake and will pay for it. The Iranian regime does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and our determination to take revenge on our enemies,” he had said.

Calling it a “severe and dangerous escalation,” Israeli Defence Forces or IDF spokesperson, RAdm. Daniel Hagari had said, “There will be consequences. We will respond wherever, whenever and however we choose, in accordance with the directive of the government of Israel.”

Telangana Minister Says Sorry To Samantha-Naga, Won't Back Down On KTR

Telangana Minister Says Sorry To Samantha-Naga, Won't Back Down On KTR

Amid the massive backlash surrounding her remark on the divorce of celebrity couple Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Telangana Minister Konda Surekha apologised to the actors and their families, but did not back down from her allegations against Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader KT Rama Rao. She also stressed that Mr Rao, also known as KTR, must apologise.

Ms Surekha has alleged that KTR, a former minister, tapped the phones of actresses and blackmailed them. In this connection, she said he was behind the divorce of Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Naga Chaitanya. “It is KT Rama Rao because of whom (actress) Samantha’s divorce happened… He was a minister at that time and used to tap the phones of the actresses and then find their weaknesses to blackmail them… He used to make them drug addicts and then do this… Everyone knows this, Samantha, Naga Chaitanya, his family — everybody is aware that such a thing happened,” she said.

The remarks sparked a massive row. Both Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Naga Chaitanya are top actors. Naga Chaitanya also belongs to the Akkineni family, among the most influential families in the Telugu film industry.

Nagarjuna Akkineni, his father and veteran actor, responded sharply to the minister’s remarks. “I strongly condemn the comments of the Honorable Minister Mrs. Konda Surekha. Don’t use the lives of movie stars who stay away from politics to criticize your opponents. Please respect other people’s privacy. As a woman in a responsible position, your comments and accusations against our family are completely irrelevant and false. I request you to withdraw your comments immediately,” he said.

Naga Chaitanya and Samanth Ruth Prabhu responded too.

Naga Chaitanya said the decision of a divorce is “one of the most painful and unfortunate life decisions one has to make”. “After a lot of thought, a mutual decision was made by me and my former spouse to part ways. It was a decision made in peace, owing to our different life goals and in the interest of moving forward with respect and dignity as two mature adults. However, there have been various baseless and completely ridiculous gossips on the matter so far. I have remained silent all this while out of deep respect for my earlier spouse as well as my family,” he said.

“Today, the claim made by Minister Konda surekha garu is not only false, it is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. Women deserve to be supported and respected. Taking advantage and exploiting the personal life decisions of celebrities for the sake of media headlines is shameful,” he added.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu said it takes a lot of courage and strength for a woman to survive in a glamorous industry where women are more often than not treated as props. “Konda Surekha Garu, I am proud of what this journey turned me into please don’t trivialise it. I hope you realise that your words carry significant weight as a minister. I implore you to be responsible and respectful of individuals’ privacy. My divorce is a personal matter, and I request that you refrain from speculating about it. Our choice to keep things private doesn’t invite misrepresentation,” she said in a social media post. “To clarify: my divorce was mutual consent and amicable, with no political conspiracy involved. Could you please keep my name out of political battles? I have always remained non-political and wish to continue doing so,” she added.

Top actors, including Chiranjeevi, Jr NTR, Allu Arjun and Nani, slammed the minister’s remarks.

Amid the backlash, Ms Surekha earlier responded to Samantha Ruth Prabhu and said she did not intend to hurt her sentiments.

“My comments are meant to question a leader’s belittling of women and not to hurt your (Samantha Prabhu) sentiments. The way you have grown up with self-power is not only an admiration for me but also an ideal…If you or your fans are offended by my comments, I unconditionally retract my comments. Don’t think otherwise,” she said.

Former minister KTR has, meanwhile, sent a defamation notice to Ms Surekha. He has accused the ruling Congress of “disgusting and nauseating politics” and requested its leader Rahul Gandhi to send the minister to a mental health specialist.

Huge Row Over Telangana Minister Linking Naga-Samantha Divorce To KTR

Huge Row Over Telangana Minister Linking Naga-Samantha Divorce To KTR

Hyderabad:

Telangana’s Forests Minister Konda Surekha has triggered a massive controversy with her allegations against Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader KT Rama Rao – linking him with the divorce of actors Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, drugs and blackmail. Her comments have drawn a sharp response from the actor’s father, veteran Telugu actor Nagarjuna Akkineni, who said her remarks are “completely irrelevant and false” and demanded that she withdraws them.

“I strongly condemn the comments of the Honorable Minister Mrs. Konda Surekha. Don’t use the lives of movie stars who stay away from politics to criticize your opponents. Please respect other people’s privacy,” read a rough translation of his post on X, formerly Twitter.

“As a woman in a responsible position, your comments and accusations against our family are completely irrelevant and false. I request you to withdraw your comments immediately,” he added.

Mr Rao has not commented on the matter but his party leader and former minister Harish Rao Thanneeru has demanded an unconditional apology from the Congress leader.

In a scathing attack on KT Rama Rao, son of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, Ms Surekha said he was the reason why many actresses left movies and married early. KT Rama Rao, she claimed, blackmailed film personalities after getting them addicted to drugs.

She also said that she suspected that the BRS leader was behind a series of offensive posts against her.

The Congress leader had faced abuse online after a photo showing BJP leader and Medak MP Raghunandan Rao placing a garland around her neck at a programme. She accused BRS leaders of using the incident to demean her using her gender.

Naga Chaitanya, who parted ways with Samantha Ruth Prabhu two years ago, got engaged to actor Sobhita Dhulipala in August.
