Ahead Of Lankan Polls, President Tells NDTV About China's Growing Presence

Ahead Of Lankan Polls, President Tells NDTV About China's Growing Presence

South Asia and Indian Ocean region is going through a “difficult time”, Sri Lankan President told NDTV.

Colombo:

The south Asian and Indian Ocean region is going through a “difficult time”, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Thursday in an exclusive interview to NDTV. Sri Lanka will hold elections on September 21 to elect the next President.

Mr Wickremesinghe, who took over as President when Sri Lanka was going through its worst-ever economic crisis, has steered the economy back towards normalcy. His re-election will prove to be an effective referendum on an unpopular International Monetary Fund austerity plan enacted by his government after the island nation’s unprecedented financial crisis.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, 75, is seeking a fresh mandate after claiming credit for stabilising the economy and bringing an end to months of food, fuel and medicine shortages.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV’s Gaurie Dwivedi, Mr Wickremesinghe spoke not just about the domestic challenges Sri Lanka faces, but also the challenges faced by the entire south Asian region, where India plays a leading part.

CRISES IN MALDIVES AND BANGLADESH

“It is a difficult time for the region. Maldives is going through an economic crisis and needs all the help they can get. Bangladesh too is facing a political crisis and we (as neighbours) should ensure that stability returns as soon as possible, after which elections can be held where a new parliament can then decide on a new prime minister,” the Sri Lankan President said, while speaking about the most recent and immediate regional challenges.

He went on to say that of all the others neighbours, “the issue of Bangladesh has the greatest impact on India”, adding that Sri Lanka too has significant investments in Bangladesh, which it views as a “friendly country”. He said he is concerned that if the crisis in Bangladesh is “not resolved in the short-to-medium term, it can have an impact on India.”

SRI LANKA’S CHALLENGES AND ANTI-INDIA REMARKS

In 2022, when Ranil Wickremesinghe took charge as President, Sri Lanka was dealing with civil unrest spurred by the economic crisis. There were protests across the nation which led to thousands storming the Presidential palace which was then occupied by Mr Wickremesinghe’s predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country. Mr Wickremesinghe took charge and restored calm and helped revived the economy by taking some tough decisions.

“Think of the time when all hope was lost… we didn’t have food, gas, medicine, or any hopes. Now you have a choice. Decide if you want to go back to that period of terror, or progress,” Mr Wickremesinghe had said in the closing days of his election campaign. India had stood by Sri Lanka during the crisis and helped revive its economy.

Mr Wickremesinghe told NDTV that it will be his priority to deepen economic ties, especially in infrastructure projects, adding that the two nations have shared cultural and economic ties for “thousands of years”.

His rivals in the elections however have made some strong anti-India remarks, and should they win the election, it may prove to be a challenge for New Delhi and perhaps even a complete reset in ties.

“Let us first watch the elections,” said the Sri Lankan President, hinting at his rivals’ remarks being amplified due to political rhetoric. But he went on to say that “There will be some groups which will make anti-India remarks. That can’t be stopped, but the aim is to minimise it.”

“As far as India-Sri Lanka friendship is concerned, it is decided by the people of both nations and they have already decided it,” he told NDTV.

Ranil Wickremesinghe faces two formidable challengers including Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, the leader of a once-marginal Marxist party tarnished by its violent past. The party led two failed uprisings in the 1970s and 1980s that left more than 80,000 people dead, and won less than four per cent of the vote in the last parliamentary elections.

But Sri Lanka’s crisis has proven an opportunity for Mr Dissanayaka, who has seen a surge of support.

According to news agency AFP, fellow opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, once dismissed as the princeling dynast of a former president assassinated in 1993 during the country’s decades-long civil war, is also favoured to make a strong showing. He has campaigned on a pledge to secure concessions from the IMF.

Speaking to NDTV about China, the Sri Lankan President said that “We’ve had good relations with China and we will continue to do so. But we will look at our interest first,” adding that “We will ensure that nothing (about China ties) will affect the security of India. Our dealings with China will work within the framework” of India’s national security.

GROWING CHINESE PRESENCE IN INDIAN OCEAN

Describing China as a “leading global power”, Mr Wickremesinghe said that “China is going to have an extended influence in the Indian Ocean region. They are already working with a number of countries.”

China is looking to grow its presence in the Indian Ocean and it is already working to build up its presence around the Suez Canal, said Mr Wickremesinghe, adding that China is looking to be a “leading global power after the United States.”

“Sri Lanka will keep working with China, but we will work on our own terms, keeping India’s interests in mind, after all India is just twenty miles away from us and we have shared historic ties” he told NDTV.

With an “all-weather ally” in Pakistan, a “pro-Beijing regime” in Maldives, an increasing presence in Nepal and deepening ties with Bangladesh’s new regime, China has been mounting its presence across south Asia and the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka votes on Saturday to elect their next President, one of the candidates reportedly being openly “pro-China and anti-India”.

Video Shows Explosion At Funeral Of Hezbollah Member Killed In Pager Blast

One of the explosions occurred during the funeral of a Hezbollah member

Walkie talkies used by Lebanon’s Hezbollah members exploded in the group’s Beirut stronghold, with a live stream on social media showing the chaos that unfolded during the explosion, Reuters reported quoting a source close to the group.

One of the explosions occurred during a funeral procession of a Hezbollah member who was killed yesterday in the pager blast. People can be seen scrambling for safety after a device detonated.

Three people have died in the walkie-talkie blast, according to Lebanon’s state media.

How many devices blew up is not known yet. There have been reports of landline telephones exploding too at various locations in East Lebanon.

This comes a day after pagers exploded across the country, killing nine people and injuring more than 2,800 others, Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad confirmed.

Iran’s state media also reported that its Ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was also wounded in yesterday’s pager incident.

The handheld wireless walkie talkies were bought at the same time as the pagers, as per reports.

Iran-backed Hezbollah has blamed Israel for the attack.

The group said today that it attacked Israeli artillery positions with rockets in the first strike at its arch-rival since pager blasts wounded thousands of its members.

Israel’s spy agency Mossad planted explosives inside pagers imported by Hezbollah months before Tuesday’s detonations, a senior Lebanese security source and another source told news agency Reuters.

Mossad has a long history of sophisticated operations on foreign soil.

PM Modi will bid farewell to US President Joe Biden, who has decided not to stand for re-election.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a three-day official visit to the United States from September 21-24 to attend the annual Quad Summit and address the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the UN General Assembly.

The fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit, which will be held in Wilmington, Delaware, is being hosted by US President Joe Biden. India will host the next Quad Summit in 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Tuesday.

The Quad meeting, which will also be attended by the leaders of Australia and Japan, will be a farewell meeting for President Biden, who is not running for a second term, and Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who is set to resign from his post.

Quad is a diplomatic partnership between four countries–Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. In recent years, Quad Foreign Ministers have met eight times and Quad governments continue to meet and coordinate at all levels.

“Following the request of the US side to host the Quad Summit this year, India has agreed to host the next Quad Summit in 2025. At the Quad Summit, the leaders will review the progress achieved by the Quad over the last one year and set the agenda for the year ahead to assist the countries of the Indo-Pacific region in meeting their development goals and aspirations,” the MEA said.

PM Modi will also address the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 23. The theme of the Summit is ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’. The PM will also hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders and discuss issues of mutual interest on the sidelines of the summit, the MEA said.

While in New York, the PM will also address a gathering of the Indian community on September 22. He will interact with the CEOs of leading US-based companies to foster greater collaborations between the two countries in areas of AI, quantum computing, semiconductors and biotechnology.

“The Prime Minister is also expected to interact with thought leaders and other stakeholders active in the India-US bilateral landscape,” the MEA added.

Top Court Hears Doctor Rape-Murder Case, Hours After Protesters' Big Win

Top Court Hears Doctor Rape-Murder Case, Hours After Protesters' Big Win

A bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra will hear the matter

Kolkata:
Hearing the matters linked to a rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Supreme Court today said the CBI is pursuing multiple leads and must not be rushed to file a chargesheet in the sensitive case

Here are 10 facts from this big story

  1. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra went through the CBI’s status report and said any disclosure would disrupt the probe. “Apart from the principal, SHO is also arrested. So let us wait. we have seen the status report,” the Chief Justice said.

  2. The CBI, the bench said, has replied to the court’s questions, including about the challan that was missing in the last hearing. It is probing if the crime scene was compromised and evidence tampered with. “We have to give CBI adequate time, they are not sleeping. They are required to be given time to unearth the truth,” the court said, according to Live Law

  3. On September 9, the court had asked the protesting doctors to return to duty by the next day. The court had assured that no action would be taken against the protesting doctors if they joined duty by the deadline.

  4. Junior doctors in Kolkata, however, refused to return to duty and continued their agitation. They said the government and the Supreme Court should not forget that this is a “people’s movement” and refused to join work till their demands were fulfilled.

  5. What followed was a series of mail exchanges between the Mamata Banerjee government in Bengal and the junior doctors’ front. The doctors demanded justice for the victim in the rape-murder case and removal of top officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

  6. After several meetings were called off over differences on whether the proceedings would be videographed, the Chief Minister and the doctors eventually met yesterday and discussed the protesters’ demands.

  7. Following the meeting, Ms Banerjee announced late last night that they had agreed to most of the doctors’ demands. She said Kolkata police chief Vineet Goyal had agreed to resign and Deputy Commissioner of Police, North, Abhishek Gupta would also be removed. The state government has also agreed to remove two senior health department officials.

  8. The junior doctors have said that the state government accepting their demands was a big victory for the agitation that enters its 39th day today. They have, however, said they would rejoin duty only when the government acts on its assurances.

  9. Between the last Supreme Court hearing and this one, a big development is the CBI slapping evidence tampering charge on Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of the state-run college, and the arrest of Tala Police Station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal under the same charge.

Telugu Film Choreographer Jani Master Accused Of Sexual Assault

Telugu Film Choreographer Jani Master Accused Of Sexual Assault

Hyderabad:

Choreographer Jani Master – whose real name is Shaik Jani Basha and who works primarily in the Telugu and Tamil film industries – and has been accused of sexual harassment by a 21-year-old woman employee.

Police in Telangana’s Rayadurgam have filed a ‘zero’ FIR, or a first information report, based on a complaint by the woman who said Jani Master, who has also worked in Kannada and Hindi films, assaulted multiple times, including once at a Mumbai hotel.

The cops are trying to contact the woman to record a detailed statement, but she is “unreachable” at this time, Chief Inspector Krishna Reddy told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

According to the woman, she met Master at an event in 2017. Two years later he offered her a job as an assistant choreographer, which she accepted. The alleged sexual assault took place after that – at a hotel Master and she, and other dancers, were staying in during a Mumbai show.

In her complaint she said Jani Master and two other male assistants had travelled to Mumbai.

The woman said she would normally have been accompanied by her mother, but was not this time since there tickets were not available. She also claimed Master threatened her if she told anyone of the assault and continued to harass her during shoots.

According to the complaint he even forced her to convert to his religion and ‘marry’ him.

Over the next few months Master would apparently frequently summon her to his cabin and sexually assault her, threatening to ruin her career if she did not comply each time.

The woman has also alleged Master would show up at her home some nights and, on one occasion, his wife (he was already married) and Master barged into her room and slapped her.

Meanwhile, acting swiftly to evade political backlash, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party (a member of the BJP-led alliance at the centre) has ordered Master to stay away from its events.

Master, a member of the Jana Sena, has told local media he has not been expelled, and has no issues with the party leadership’s instruction.

The allegation comes amid over churn in the Kerala movie business after the release of a partly redacted judicial committee report triggered an avalanche of sex assault allegations against senior actors and filmmakers. That list includes M Mukesh – an MLA with Kerala’s ruling CPIM.

Popular actors and directors like Nivin Pauly, Jayasurya, Mukesh, and Siddique all face multiple charges of assault and/or rape, and are being investigated by a special police team set up by the Kerala government. They have all denied the claims and labelled them “baseless”.
