Revanth Reddy Cites Lord Krishna, Backs Razing Actor Nagarjuna's Building

Hyderabad::

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has said the demolition of the convention centre co-owned by actor Nagarjuna Akkineni is proper under the teachings of Lord Krishna in Bhagwad Gita. His government, he added, would not spare anyone who encroached upon lakes, no matter how influential they are.

Bhagavad Gita is an inspiration to demolish illegal structures, the Chief Minister said at a function by the Hare Krishna Movement. Lord Krishna taught that for the good of the people, one should follow dharma. One should defeat adharma, even if it means battle with one’s friends, he said.

Properties of Congress leaders Pallam Raju and Danam Nagender have already been brought down by HYDRAA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection).. Demolitions are expected across party lines.

“Arjuna had wanted to back out from the war, saying what is the point if i have to kill my own? But Krishna says for the larger good, for dharma to win over adharma, you must fight. That is what i am trying to do, going ahead with demolitions to save lakes though i know i will upset many people who can impact my government adversely,” Mr Reddy said.

“We have a duty to protect Hyderabad, to stop it from becoming another Chennai, Uttarakhand or Wayanad,” he added.

The Congress government has taken up demolitions of illegal structures built in full tank level of water bodies by the HYDRAA.

The N-Convention Centre — demolished among others by the officials of the HYDRAA, Town planning, irrigation and revenue departments on Saturday — was allegedly built on encroached land which is part of Tammidikunta lake. The matter is pending in court, which had ordered a freeze on the demolition.

The move was strongly condemned by Nagarjuna, who claimed it was “unlawful”. He said he would have demolished the structure himself if the court had decided against him.

The N-Convention is built in the FTL /Buffer zone and has no building permission, a government release had said.

Mr Reddy also said some of the farmhouses built near lakes release sewer into water bodies such as Gandipet which supply drinking water to parts of the city. He would not be a true public representative if he failed to protect the lakes and interests of people, he added.

The municipal authorities have issued notices to 225 row houses belonging to Telugu cine artists in Manikonda.

Harish Rao, leader of Bharat Rashtra Samithi, said it is an attempt to target opposition leaders, to pressurise them to join the Congress. Colleges belonging to BRS leaders Palla Rajeswar Rao and Malla Reddy could face action.

“It is a diversionary tactic. Will they demolish the structures belonging to Ponguleti Srinivas, Patnam Mahender Reddy and other Congress leaders?” he said.

The city’s chain of lakes were designed by the erstwhile Nizam administration after a great deluge in 1908 with the help of famous engineer Mokshagundam Vishvesvaraya.

Who Was Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah Commander Whose Death Sparked Today's Conflict

Who Was Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah Commander Whose Death Sparked Today's Conflict

New Delhi:

Lebanon- based militant group Hezbollah fired a large number of missiles at Israel on Sunday, retaliating for the assassination of their senior commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut last month.

Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging fire since October 7, while avoiding a major escalation. While both sides had avoided a major escalation, tensions rose significantly after a missile strike in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights killed 12 people. While Hezbollah denied involvement in that attack, Israel responded with targeted airstrikes, assassinating Fuad Shukr and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

On Sunday, the Iranian-backed movement said the attack was a response to Israel’s actions and announced that they had completed the “first phase” of its retaliation against the Jewish State, reported Reuters.

Who was Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr?

Fuad Shukr, also known by the alias “Al-Hajj Mohsin”, was a senior commander in Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon, widely regarded as a terrorist organisation by several countries, including the United States and Israel. Shukr was among the founding members of Hezbollah during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. He was part of the generation of Lebanese Shi’ites who aligned with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to establish the group.

He was a close associate of Imad Mughniyeh, Hezbollah’s former military commander who was assassinated in Damascus in 2008. Shukr’s prominence in the group grew after Mughniyeh’s death.

The US accused Shukr of playing a central role in the 1983 bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut, which killed 241 US military personnel. This attack is one of the deadliest against American forces in the Middle East. The US government had placed a bounty of up to $5 million on Shukr’s head through its Rewards for Justice program.

Fuad Shukr served as a senior military commander in Hezbollah’s forces in southern Lebanon and was a member of the group’s highest military body, the Jihad Council. He played a key role in Hezbollah’s military operations in Syria, particularly in supporting President Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian civil war. Hezbollah’s involvement in Syria was crucial to Assad’s survival during the conflict’s early years.

Fuad Shukr was also a special adviser to Hezbollah’s leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and was a member of the Shura Council, a key decision-making body within the organisation.

On July 30, Fuad Shukr was targeted by an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. Following the airstrike, Lebanese security sources reported that Shukr was critically injured. His death was later confirmed by Israeli broadcast reports.

How A Madhya Pradesh Dam Destroyed Fertile Land It Was Meant To Irrigate

How A Madhya Pradesh Dam Destroyed Fertile Land It Was Meant To Irrigate

On August 11, 2022, the first signs of trouble were detected with a leak in the Karam Dam.

Dhar:

A dam in Madhya Pradesh captured nationwide attention two years ago when it was breached even before it was completed. Today, Karam Dam – in Dharampuri tehsil of Dhar district – remains under construction, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Despite the suspension of eight officials, two of whom have since retired and the others reinstated, and the blacklisting of the construction company, no accountability has been established for the massive failure that endangered over 18 villages and devastated the livelihoods of farmers in 42 villages.

On August 11, 2022, the first signs of trouble were detected with a leak in the Karam Dam. The government and local administration had no choice but to breach the incomplete wall to prevent a larger catastrophe. For three nights, they worked tirelessly to release the water safely. Yet, after the initial crisis was averted, attention waned, leaving the Karam Dam abandoned and the affected villagers in a state of despair.

Fertile Lands Destroyed

The dam was originally intended to irrigate the agricultural lands of 42 villages in Dharampuri tehsil. However, since the breach, the flood-affected tribal farmers have been struggling to survive. Their fertile lands were destroyed, replaced by fields filled with stones from the floodwaters. The result is that many farmers, like Shivam Kahir, have been forced into labor work to make ends meet.

“Due to the Karam Dam bursting two years ago, our land and crops were destroyed. The fertile soil was washed away, and now our fields are filled with stones. We have resupeatedly asked the government for compensation and to restore our land, but nothing has been done,” says Shivam, expressing the frustration felt by many in his village.

The situation is so dire that some villagers have taken refuge in the nearby forests, leaving their homes behind. They face daily hardships, including a lack of food and basic necessities. Many villagers, like Jaisingh, have issued a stern warning to the government: if problems are not addressed, they will obstruct any further work on the dam.

“The agency responsible for the dam’s construction made us sign consent forms, but now they’ve been given the contract again. If they don’t remove the debris from our fields before resuming work, we will not allow them to start,” Jaisingh warns.

‘No Electricity, Roads For 2 Years’

Farmers are also demanding compensation akin to what was provided to those affected by the Narmada floods. “We have been without electricity, water, and roads for two years. We should be compensated just like the Narmada flood-affected people,” says Kamal, a resident of Utavali village. He highlights the severe neglect from the government, stating that despite the compensation for land, no reparations have been made for the loss of trees, wells, or other essential resources.

Living conditions for the displaced farmers are deplorable. They reside in makeshift shelters in the forests, facing threats from wild animals and lacking basic amenities such as electricity and roads. Education for children has been reduced to makeshift classes held in huts, and the community remains in a constant state of fear and insecurity.

“The affected tribal farmers were given Rs 2 lakh per bigha as compensation, which was insufficient. They were promised homes and land in return, but two years later, they are still waiting,” says Panchilal Meda, a former MLA from Congress. He further accuses the government of gross corruption, claiming that the dam, which cost Rs 305 crore, was built using substandard materials.

Despite these allegations, government officials maintain that most of the compensation has been distributed. “Only a few people are left to receive compensation. We are working on completing this process and will continue to investigate and compensate those eligible,” states MS Chauhan, executive engineer. He adds that due to the complexity of the project, the construction work will take another two years.

In 2018, ANS Construction from Delhi was awarded the contract to build the Karam Dam. ANS subcontracted the work to Gwalior’s Sarathi Construction. Following the dam’s failure, both companies were blacklisted on August 16, 2022. However, Sarathi Construction contested the decision in the High Court, while the government remained largely inactive, allowing the company to clear its name.

As the people of Dharampuri continue to suffer from the aftermath of the dam’s failure, the unresolved issues of accountability, corruption, and neglect cast a long shadow over the future of Karam Dam and the farmers it was meant to serve.

Will Donald Trump Help Ukraine If He Wins? See Zelensky's Response To NDTV

Will Donald Trump Help Ukraine If He Wins? See Zelensky's Response To NDTV

st Russia. Mr Zelensky was speaking to reporters after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kyiv.

Kyiv:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has given a measured response on what he expects from Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump if the former President wins the election again.

Mr Zelensky, responding to a question by NDTV on whether he expects Mr Trump to support Ukraine’s war effort, he said, “We will see in November.”

The US election is scheduled in November. Mr Trump and the Democratic nominee Kamala Harris will get in the ring for the ultimate fight.

“But anyway I didn’t get any signal from his (Mr Trump’s) team or from him. We had one bilateral talk during this period of time, during wartime we had one phone call. I only had messages that he would support Ukraine, will do everything to stop the war, and to do everything for Ukraine to remain independent, European and free,” Mr Zelensky said.

“That is all the messages I have got from him directly. But anyway I can’t prognosis, so we will see in November what will be,” said the Ukrainian President whose country is fighting a war against Russia.

Mr Zelensky was speaking to reporters after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kyiv. It was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since Ukraine’s independence in 1991.

PM Modi’s visit to Kyiv was seen in many quarters as a diplomatic balancing act as his trip to Russia triggered anguish among some Western countries. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said PM Modi reiterated the need for “practical engagement” between all stakeholders to develop an innovative solution that will help build broad acceptability and contribute towards peace and stability.

During the bilateral talks, PM Modi had earlier told Mr Zelensky that both Ukraine and Russia should sit together without wasting time to find ways to end the war, and that India had been on the side of peace since the beginning of the conflict in February 2022.

“When you begin a strategic partnership, and you begin some dialogue, you don’t need to lose time. That’s why I think it will be good to meet together again, and if our meeting will be in India, I’ll be happy,” Mr Zelensky said.

“Excessive Bail Is No Bail”: Supreme Court On Difficult Conditions For Release

“Excessive Bail Is No Bail”: Supreme Court On Difficult Conditions For Release

New Delhi:

Granting bail but imposing excessive conditions on an individual is like taking away with the left hand what was given by the right, the Supreme Court observed on Thursday while stating that “excessive bail is no bail”

The bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan was hearing a petition filed by a man who had 13 cases filed against him for various offences including cheating.

In his plea, the petitioner has argued that he was granted bail in all 13 cases but was able to fulfil the bail conditions of only two of them and he was not able to furnish separate sureties for the rest of them.

“The situation today is, in spite of obtaining bail in 13 cases, the petitioner has not been able to furnish sureties. From time immemorial, the principle has been that the excessive bail is no bail. To grant bail and thereafter to impose excessive and onerous conditions, is to take away with the left hand, what is given with the right,” the bench said.

The top court also referred to the petitioner’s “genuine difficulty” in getting multiple sureties for each bail. A surety, the bench noted, would usually be a relative or friend but in a criminal proceeding, this circle of people would be narrow depending on the nature of the crime as a person would hesitate to tell relatives and friends about such cases to protect their reputation.

“These are hard realities of life in our country and as a court of law we cannot shut our eyes to them. A solution, however, has to be found strictly within the framework of the law,” it said.

However the court said it was faced with the situation where there was a need to balance the requirement of furnishing the sureties with his fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution.

In its order, the court observed that the petitioner was able to secure a surety for a case filed in Haryana but was unable to do so for another that was registered in Rajasthan

“Keeping the principles discussed hereinabove, we direct that for the FIRs pending in each of the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Uttarakhand, in each state, the petitioner will furnish his personal bond for Rs 50,000 and furnish two sureties who shall execute the bond for Rs 30,000 each which shall hold good for all FIRs in the concerned state,” the bench said, adding that the same set of sureties is permitted to stand as surety in all the states.

Opinion: Opinion | Making Women Feel Safe Makes Economic Sense, Too

Opinion: Opinion | Making Women Feel Safe Makes Economic Sense, Too

The rage is different this time. Whether it is a case from a Kolkata hospital or a school in the Mumbai suburb of Thane. The dirty secret of the Malayalam film industry is already out in the open. The anger isn’t helped when one learns that even in such heinous crimes, it may take 32 long years to get justice, as in the case involving girls in Rajasthan’s Ajmer in the early 1990s.

But the outrage this time is different, and that gives us hope. It has transcended petty politics. The political class stands discredited. The police administration is frightened. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance.

The good thing is that this time, the anger is against the powerful system where some predators shamelessly cross all limits while using power or access to it for their own benefits, both carnal or otherwise. The anger is now against the patriarchy that is at the root of all discrimination in the world.

Patriarchy And The Law Of The Jungle

Patriarchy is a disorder that operates according to the law of the jungle. Here, might is considered right. If one has power, they can do anything according to their own will – with their strength, influence, reach, by breaking the system, or by forcibly taking away others’ rights. Sexual harassment is the most perverse manifestation of patriarchy and the jungle raj it represents.

On paper, we have left behind the laws of the jungle, right? But the wild animals still roam the streets in Kolkata, Ajmer, Kochi, Bareilly, Thane, Patna, Satna, Kathua, Hathras… Thousands of names can be added to the list. There are millions of people who still believe in a false sense of superiority that the jungle playbook affords.

But this time, the anger is against those who adhere to these principles. People have begun to realise that the jungle raj serves the interests of a few. It is a kind of democratic upsurge that may lead to far-reaching and sweeping changes.

Those who are wedded to the idea of the rule of law know how beneficial it can be to maintain a safe environment for women. The International Labour Organization (ILO) conducted a survey in 2018 and came up with some startling findings. Where companies struggle to increase profit margins by 2-3%, it was found that increasing female representation on boards raises profit margins by a whopping 5 to 20%.

Some other salient findings of the survey are:

  • Increasing female representation raises the likelihood of increased profits and productivity by up to 63%
  • Retaining good talent becomes 60% easier
  • The chance of innovation increases by 59%
  • The company’s reputation increases by 58%
  • Understanding consumer behaviour becomes 38% easier

Despite these benefits, changes are woefully slow to come. Look at what a recent UN report says. Worldwide, 270 crore women do not have the rights to the same kind of jobs that men have. Among the 190 countries assessed, 69 have some restrictions on women working in all sectors. And in as many as 43 countries, there are no laws to prevent sexual harassment of women in workplaces. Horrible, isn’t it?

The same UN report also says that worldwide, while only 61% of women attempt to enter the job market; the rate for men is over 90%. And if a woman becomes a mother, only half of them get opportunities to enter the workforce. Men face no such restrictions after becoming fathers. Must be the design of the same set of patriarchal forces.

Why Some Are Scared Of Rule Of Law

The discrimination is beyond comprehension, given the kind of benefits that can accrue if we do away with it. Such discrimination can only exist in a patriarchy-driven jungle raj.

The question is, why has patriarchy remained so unshakeable for centuries? Clearly, it’s the interests of a powerful few. Those with influence do not want the rule of law to replace this jungle raj. The perks they receive due to their influence make them fearful of losing them under the rule of law.

Some patriarchy exists in all of us – in men and women both. More in some, less in others. However, the rage across the country gives hope that its hold will weaken. It happened after the Nirbhaya movement, and even after the all-powerful MeToo movement that swept the world not too long ago. We all need to fully understand that the destruction of patriarchy is in everyone’s best interest.

Shouldn’t we all unite in our quest to establish the rule of law, a system free from any might-is-right principles?
