On Camera, AAP's Atishi Breaks Down Mid-Speech After Manish Sisodia's Bail

On Camera, AAP's Atishi Breaks Down Mid-Speech After Manish Sisodia's Bail

AAP leaders today termed the Supreme Court verdict as a “victory of truth”.

New Delhi:

Delhi Education Minister and AAP leader Atishi broke down today as she reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail to Manish Sisodia, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, in the liquor policy case.

Atishi, speaking at a school in the national capital, said, “Today the truth has won, the students of Delhi have won. He was put in jail because he provided good education to poor children.”

AAP leaders today termed the Supreme Court verdict as a “victory of truth”. Mr Sisodia was granted bail nearly 18 months after his arrest in the liquor policy case. The Supreme Court’s verdict, delivered by Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan, said it would be a “travesty of justice” to continue Mr Sisodia’s incarceration without significant progress in the trial.

“This is the victory of truth,” Atishi added. “He was implicated in a false case. He gave a bright future to the children of Delhi. Today we are happy and now we are waiting that in the same way, Delhi’s popular Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will also come out. This is the victory of the people of Delhi.”

Mr Sisodia, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26 last year, has been at the centre of a controversy surrounding the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) subsequently arrested him on March 9, 2023, in connection with a money laundering case that stemmed from the CBI’s First Information Report (FIR). Mr Sisodia resigned from his ministerial post two days later on February 28, 2023.

The legal battle surrounding the case has seen multiple high-profile arrests, including that of Arvind Kejriwal. On Thursday, a Delhi court extended Mr Kejriwal’s judicial custody until August 20 in the ongoing corruption case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who presided over the hearing, extended Mr Kejriwal’s custody after he appeared before the court via video conference.

Mr Kejriwal, 55, was initially arrested by the CBI on June 26 while already in judicial custody at Tihar Jail, where he was being held in connection with a money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). His arrest by the ED had occurred earlier on March 21.

Despite being granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in the ED case on July 12, Mr Kejriwal remains in Tihar Jail as he has yet to furnish the required bail bond.

Vinesh Phogat Appeals To Court Of Arbitration For Sport Against Disqualification, Asks For Joint Olympic Silver | Olympics News

Vinesh Phogat Appeals To Court Of Arbitration For Sport Against Disqualification, Asks For Joint Olympic Silver | Olympics News

Vinesh Phogat, who was earlier disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics 2024 for being 100 gram overweight than the permissible limit, has decided to file an appeal in Court of Arbitration for Sport against the decision. She has asked for a joint Olympic silver to be given to her. The Court of Arbitration for Sport or CAS is an international body established in 1984 to settle disputes in sport through arbitration. Vinesh has asked for an urgent hearing and has requested for two silver medals to be given. The verdict is expected to be given on Thursday.

USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt, who was Vinesh’s opponent for the final, was poised to take on Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the final after the Indian’s disqualification. Vinesh had beaten Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semi-final.

“Lets see how it transpires. The Indian contingent has done due diligence,” Saurav Ghoshal, star Indian squash player, said on Jio Cinema.

An ad-hoc division of the CAS has been set up in Paris for resolution by arbitration of any disputes arising during the Olympic Games or during a period of 10 days preceding the Opening Ceremony.

Any hopes of Vinesh getting a silver medal now hinge on the CAS ruling. According to a PTI report, The rules of admission of such cases is very clear. The claimant, before filing such a request, must exhaust “all the internal remedies available to her/him pursuant to the statutes or regulations of the sports body concerned.” The exception being situations where “the time needed to exhaust the internal remedies would make the appeal to the CAS Ad Hoc Division ineffective.”

Following Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification in the 50 kg category final at Paris Olympics, former Indian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt said that it was a loss of a medal for India. In a big blow to India’s medal hopes from the wrestling arena, grappler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event for breaching the weight mark.

Speaking to ANI, Yogeshwar said that it was painful to see her being disqualified in the wrestling 50 kg category event. He added that people should stand behind Vinesh.

“It is a loss of a medal for India and also for Vinesh. It is painful the way she has been disqualified. It is time to stand by her as she was competing for India. Similar things have happened with international players also. Sadly, politics is being brought into it. All international wrestlers know UWW and Olympic rules,” Yogeshwar said.

Vinesh Phogat had entered the Gold Medal bout after beating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday night.

Relief For Homeowners As Centre Modifies Long Term Capital Gains Tax

Relief For Homeowners As Centre Modifies Long Term Capital Gains Tax

New Delhi:

The government on Tuesday proposed significant relief for individuals who bought houses before July 23, 2024, by giving them the option to choose between two tax rates for long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax.

The Budget 2024-25 had proposed to lower the LTCG from 20 per cent to 12.5 per cent but removed the indexation benefits. The new rates have come into effect from July 23, 2024.

The indexation benefit allowed taxpayers to compute gains arising out of the sale of capital assets after adjusting for inflation.

Tax experts had said that the proposed changes in the Budget would raise the LTCG tax burden.

As per the amendments to Finance Bill, 2024, circulated to the Lok Sabha members on Tuesday, individuals or HuF who bought houses before July 23, 2024, can compute his/her taxes under the new scheme [@12.5 per cent without indexation] and old scheme [@20 per cent with indexation] and pay such tax which is lower of the two.

After the Budget presentation, the Income Tax department said that ‘substantial tax savings’ are expected for a vast majority of taxpayers due to a reduction in the long-term capital gains tax (LTCG) rate in the real estate sector.

As per the changes brought in the 2024-25 Budget, the government has retained the indexation benefit for taxpayers on properties bought or inherited before 2001.

Yogesh Kale, Executive Director, Nangia Andersen India said through the amendments proposed to the new capital gain tax regime introduced in Budget 2024, the Finance Minister has tried to appease the taxpayers by addressing the concerns raised to some extent.

“While abolishment of indexation benefit continues, properties acquired prior to 23rd July 2024 are proposed to be grandfathered with the option to the taxpayers to offer the capital gain tax either at 12.5% without indexation or 20% with indexation, whichever is more beneficial,” Kale said.

Gouri Puri, Partner, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. said This will quell taxpayer concerns around losing indexation benefits as a trade-off for a lower long-term capital gains tax rate.

“Taxpayers can choose the more beneficial regime and should not be worse off because of change in law. Concerns around taxation of inflationary gains in respect of immovable property acquired prior to a change in the law have been addressed,” Mr Puri added.

Bangladesh Ex IT Minister Detained While Trying To Flee Country: Report

Bangladesh Ex IT Minister Detained While Trying To Flee Country: Report

Zunaid Ahmed Palak was detained at the Dhaka international airport.

Bangladesh’s former Information and Technology Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak was detained at the Dhaka International Airport today while he was trying to leave the country. The military, which has formed an interim government in the violence-hit country, detained the former minister a day after the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Mr Ahmed was approached by airport officials while he was waiting at the VIP lounge of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, as per reports. He was later detained by Air Force officials.

He was trying to fly to India, where Ms Hasina also fled to on Monday as protesters forced their way into her palace, according to several reports.

Bangladesh witnessed scenes of chaos and anger yesterday, its deadliest day since anti-government protests began in early July, with police reporting mobs launching revenge attacks on Sheikh Hasina’s allies.

Offices of her party Awam League across the country were torched and looted.

Protesters stormed parliament and burnt TV stations. Footage showed some smashing the statue of Ms Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s independence hero.

Sheikh Hasina landed at a military airbase near New Delhi on Monday evening. As per sources, she wanted to transit on to London. However, there has been no confirmation of the former Prime Minister’s schedule or, about her location since then.

The UK government, meanwhile, has said their immigration rules do not allow individuals to travel to their country to seek asylum or temporary refuge. “Individuals seeking asylum must do so in the first safe country they reach,” the UK Home Office told NDTV.

The unrest in Bangladesh began last month against civil service job quotas. What started as protests later escalated into wider calls for Sheikh Hasina to stand down. She was made to resign by the military that, as per sources, gave her a “45-minute ultimatum”.

The army chief met President Mohammed Shahabuddin late Monday, alongside key opposition leaders, with the president’s press team saying it had been “decided to form an interim government immediately”.

Shahabuddin also ordered the release of prisoners from the protests, as well as former prime minister and a bitter rival of Ms Hasina, Khaleda Zia.
