The fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit, which will be held in Wilmington, Delaware, is being hosted by US President Joe Biden. India will host the next Quad Summit in 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Tuesday.

Top Court Hears Doctor Rape-Murder Case, Hours After Protesters' Big Win

Top Court Hears Doctor Rape-Murder Case, Hours After Protesters' Big Win

A bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra will hear the matter

Kolkata:
Hearing the matters linked to a rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Supreme Court today said the CBI is pursuing multiple leads and must not be rushed to file a chargesheet in the sensitive case

Here are 10 facts from this big story

  1. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra went through the CBI’s status report and said any disclosure would disrupt the probe. “Apart from the principal, SHO is also arrested. So let us wait. we have seen the status report,” the Chief Justice said.

  2. The CBI, the bench said, has replied to the court’s questions, including about the challan that was missing in the last hearing. It is probing if the crime scene was compromised and evidence tampered with. “We have to give CBI adequate time, they are not sleeping. They are required to be given time to unearth the truth,” the court said, according to Live Law

  3. On September 9, the court had asked the protesting doctors to return to duty by the next day. The court had assured that no action would be taken against the protesting doctors if they joined duty by the deadline.

  4. Junior doctors in Kolkata, however, refused to return to duty and continued their agitation. They said the government and the Supreme Court should not forget that this is a “people’s movement” and refused to join work till their demands were fulfilled.

  5. What followed was a series of mail exchanges between the Mamata Banerjee government in Bengal and the junior doctors’ front. The doctors demanded justice for the victim in the rape-murder case and removal of top officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

  6. After several meetings were called off over differences on whether the proceedings would be videographed, the Chief Minister and the doctors eventually met yesterday and discussed the protesters’ demands.

  7. Following the meeting, Ms Banerjee announced late last night that they had agreed to most of the doctors’ demands. She said Kolkata police chief Vineet Goyal had agreed to resign and Deputy Commissioner of Police, North, Abhishek Gupta would also be removed. The state government has also agreed to remove two senior health department officials.

  8. The junior doctors have said that the state government accepting their demands was a big victory for the agitation that enters its 39th day today. They have, however, said they would rejoin duty only when the government acts on its assurances.

  9. Between the last Supreme Court hearing and this one, a big development is the CBI slapping evidence tampering charge on Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of the state-run college, and the arrest of Tala Police Station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondal under the same charge.

  10. A postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the morning of August 9. Medical examination confirmed rape. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer frequenting the hospital, has been arrested for the heinous crime. The incident shook the nation and sparked massive protests.

Telugu Film Choreographer Jani Master Accused Of Sexual Assault

Telugu Film Choreographer Jani Master Accused Of Sexual Assault

Hyderabad:

Choreographer Jani Master – whose real name is Shaik Jani Basha and who works primarily in the Telugu and Tamil film industries – and has been accused of sexual harassment by a 21-year-old woman employee.

Police in Telangana’s Rayadurgam have filed a ‘zero’ FIR, or a first information report, based on a complaint by the woman who said Jani Master, who has also worked in Kannada and Hindi films, assaulted multiple times, including once at a Mumbai hotel.

The cops are trying to contact the woman to record a detailed statement, but she is “unreachable” at this time, Chief Inspector Krishna Reddy told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

According to the woman, she met Master at an event in 2017. Two years later he offered her a job as an assistant choreographer, which she accepted. The alleged sexual assault took place after that – at a hotel Master and she, and other dancers, were staying in during a Mumbai show.

In her complaint she said Jani Master and two other male assistants had travelled to Mumbai.

The woman said she would normally have been accompanied by her mother, but was not this time since there tickets were not available. She also claimed Master threatened her if she told anyone of the assault and continued to harass her during shoots.

According to the complaint he even forced her to convert to his religion and ‘marry’ him.

Over the next few months Master would apparently frequently summon her to his cabin and sexually assault her, threatening to ruin her career if she did not comply each time.

The woman has also alleged Master would show up at her home some nights and, on one occasion, his wife (he was already married) and Master barged into her room and slapped her.

Meanwhile, acting swiftly to evade political backlash, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party (a member of the BJP-led alliance at the centre) has ordered Master to stay away from its events.

Master, a member of the Jana Sena, has told local media he has not been expelled, and has no issues with the party leadership’s instruction.

The allegation comes amid over churn in the Kerala movie business after the release of a partly redacted judicial committee report triggered an avalanche of sex assault allegations against senior actors and filmmakers. That list includes M Mukesh – an MLA with Kerala’s ruling CPIM.

Popular actors and directors like Nivin Pauly, Jayasurya, Mukesh, and Siddique all face multiple charges of assault and/or rape, and are being investigated by a special police team set up by the Kerala government. They have all denied the claims and labelled them “baseless”.

The allegations roiling the Kerala film industry, called Mollywood, include some shocking stories, like actor Sowmya saying she was “groomed as a sex slave” by a director from Tamil Nadu. They have also led to a fierce political fight between the CPIM and the opposition.

“I'm Glad He's Safe”: Kamala Harris After Shots Fired In Trump's Vicinity

“I'm Glad He's Safe”: Kamala Harris After Shots Fired In Trump's Vicinity

The Republican candidate is “safe”, his party campaign said.

Shots were fired from an AK-47-style rifle in former US President Donald Trump’s vicinity on the grounds of his golf course in Palm Beach Florida, where he was present. The Republican candidate is “safe”, his party campaign said.

Kamala Harris, US Vice President and Democratic Party’s Presidential candidate said she has been “briefed on reports of gunshots fired near former President Trump and his property in Florida. I am glad that he is safe.” Ms Harris said, “Violence has no place in America.”

The US Secret Service, the organization responsible for protecting serving and former Presidents, accompanied Mr Trump – A protocol followed by the team.

The motive behind the shooting is unclear, but still, it came almost two months after a failed assassination attempt against Mr Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a shooter, atop a roof, shot a 5.56mm bullet from an AR-15 style rifle, which grazed his ear and blood splattering on his face.

The US Secret Service accepted that it had failed to protect the former president at an election rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

The Secret Service takes full responsibility for the tragic events of July 13th. This was a mission failure. The sole responsibility of our agency is to make sure our protectees are never put in danger. We fell short of that in Butler. And I’m working to make sure that this failure does not happen again,” Acting Director of the US Secret Service, Ronald Rowe said.

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris will be up against each other in the closely contested presidential elections scheduled for November this year.

The incident in Florida comes days after the first Presidential debate between the rival candidates where Ms Harris “trumped” Donald Trump and a majority of debate watchers said Harris outperformed Trump, according to a CNN flash poll released shortly after the debate. YouGov showed 54% of those surveyed said Harris won while 31% said Trump was the victor.

Explained: How New 'Mountain Tank' Will Enhance Army's Combat Capabilities

Explained: How New 'Mountain Tank' Will Enhance Army's Combat Capabilities

The first phase of trials have been successfully completed.

New Delhi:

Learning lessons from the standoff with China in Eastern Ladakh and fine-tuning them by observing what’s been happening in the war between Russia and Ukraine, the Defence Research and Development Organisation has developed India’s first ‘mountain tank’, Zorawar, which successfully completed its first phase of trials on Friday.

The air-transportable, 25-tonne combat platform, developed for high-altitude deployment, has been designed to meet India’s needs on the frontier with China.

“The DRDO on September 13 successfully conducted the preliminary automotive trials of the Indian light Tank, Zorawar, a highly versatile platform capable of deployment in high-altitude areas,” the Defence Ministry said.

“During the field trials conducted in the desert terrain, the light tank demonstrated exceptional performance, efficiently meeting all the intended objectives,” it added.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the successful trials as a “significant milestone” on  India’s path to self-reliance in critical defence systems and technologies.

Developed by DRDO’s Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE) in association with Larsen and Toubro, the Army is planning to deploy 350 Zorawar tanks, mostly in mountainous terrain.

DRDO had earlier developed the Arjun, a third-generation main battle tank weighing 58.5 tonnes but, after the confrontation with China, the need was felt for a lighter tank for hilly terrain.

What Makes It Special

Developed in a record time of about three years, Zorawar, which means “courageous” in Punjabi, will be ready to be inducted into the Army in another three. The project has been named after General Zorawar Singh Kahluria, who had served under Raja Gulab Singh of Jammu’s Dogra dynasty and  helped expand the Dogra territory by conquering Ladakh.

Being light, it can be easily deployed in border areas by helicopter. Experts said the tank will prove to be very effective even in bad weather and difficult conditions on the northern border, and can also perform well in desert areas.

Equipped with armour which is strong for its category of tanks, it can wade through water as well. Its speed is about 60 kilometres per hour on land and it is equipped with the Cockerill 3105 turret with a 105-millimetre calibre gun. Machine guns can be mounted on it and anti-tank guided missiles can also be installed.

With its ability to fire at high angles of elevation, the tank can perform the role of limited artillery and it is a versatile platform which has been built in a modular fashion to accommodate future upgrades.
