Explained: Women's Boxing Match At Paris Olympics Sparks Gender Row

Explained: Women's Boxing Match At Paris Olympics Sparks Gender Row

A boxing round lasts 3 minutes and there are three rounds in each.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who failed a gender eligibility test last year, knocked their Italian opponent out in 46 seconds in the 66 kg women’s boxing category and has drawn the ire of Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, who said the fight was “not on an equal footing”.

The author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, reacted to the gender row during the match and said, “Explain why you’re OK with a man beating a woman in public for your entertainment.”

Italian Angela Carini was distraught, she collapsed on her knees and sobbed in the middle of the ring after the defeat and did not shake hands with Khelif, who entered the quarterfinals in the category after the win.

A boxing round lasts 3 minutes and there are three rounds in each but the Algerian boxer landed two strong punches, knocking Carini out in just 46 seconds. The Italian boxer was unable to stand after her nose was hit and began bleeding.

“I have a big pain in my nose and I said, ‘Stop’. It’s better to avoid keeping going. My nose started dripping (with blood) from the first hit,” said the distressed Carini.

Italy’s Prime Minister said “I think athletes who have male genetic characteristics should not be admitted to women’s competitions. And not because you want to discriminate against someone, but to protect the right of female athletes to be able to compete on equal terms.”

“I was emotional yesterday when she wrote ‘I will fight’ because the dedication, the head, and the character, surely also play a role in these things. But then, it also matters to be able to compete on equal grounds and from my point of view it was not an even contest,” Ms Meloni added.

What Is The Controversy?

The International Olympic Committee allowed two boxers, who failed the gender eligibility tests for the World Boxing Championships, to be made eligible to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Last year, the Algerian boxer was disqualified hours before her gold medal match at the women’s World Championships in Delhi. Algerian media reported that Khelif was disqualified for a high level of testosterone in her system.

Taiwan’s double world champion Lin Yu-ting lost her bronze medal at the same competition after she too failed to meet the criteria.

Umar Kremlev, Amateur Boxing President, told Russian news agency TASS, “DNA tests of two boxers proved they have XY chromosomes and were thus excluded.” XY is the male chromosome and XX is for females.

Reem Alsalem, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women and girls, wrote on X that “Angela Carini rightly followed her instincts and prioritized her physical safety, but she and other female athletes should not have been exposed to this physical and psychological violence based on their sex.”

The World Championships were organised by the International Boxing Association (IBA) and were not recognised by the International Olympic Committee over financial transparency.

The IOC said the source of the prize money at the International Boxing Association was unclear and is one of the reasons why they withdrew its recognition of the IBA.

“The IBA was not prepared to transparently explain the sources of its financing or to explain its full financial dependency, at the time, on a single state-owned company, Gazprom,” IOC said.

The boxing competition at the Paris Olympics is being organised by the Paris Boxing Unit (PBU), an ad-hoc unit of the IOC’s Executive Board.

IOC spokesman, Mark Adams, said “Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with competition eligibility rules. They are women in their passports and it’s stated in there that they are female.”

Nations Back Their Boxers

As expected, the Algerian and Taiwanese boxers have received backing from their nations’ leaders. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said, “Yu-ting’s performances have inspired many Taiwanese players and united Taiwanese people. Now that she is once again on the international stage, we should stand united and cheer for her.”

Alegria’s Olympic committee called it a “malicious and unethical attack directed against our distinguished athlete, Imane Khelif, by certain foreign media”.

The IBA in a statement clarified that Khelif initially appealed the decision of the IBA’s ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) but later withdrew it during the process, making their decision legally binding.

However, Lin Yu-ting did not appeal the decision thus rendering it legally binding.

“The IOC’s differing regulations on these matters, in which IBA is not involved, raise serious questions about both competitive fairness and athletes’ safety. For clarification on why the IOC permits athletes with competitive advantages to compete in their events, we urge interested parties to seek answers directly from the IOC,” the IBA said.

‘ Explain Why You’re Ok With A Man Beating A Woman’

The author of Harry Potter, JK Rowling, voiced her opinion on the gender row during the match and said, “Explain why you’re OK with a man beating a woman in public for your entertainment. This isn’t sport. From the bullying cheat in red up to the organisers who allowed this to happen, this is men revelling in their power over women.”

Kirsty Burrows, the Head of the Safe Sport Unit at the IOC, in a press briefing, said, “Paris Olympics 2024 offers the most comprehensive package of mental health and safeguarding initiatives than any other Olympic or sporting event in history.”

Ms Burrows’s comments were unrelated to the boxing match incident but Ms Rowling commented and said, “A young female boxer has just had everything she’s worked and trained for snatched away because you allowed a male to get in the ring with her. You’re a disgrace, your ‘safeguarding’ is a joke and Paris 24 will be forever tarnished by the brutal injustice done to Carini.”

'Remove GST On Life Insurance': Nitin Gadkari's Appeal To Nirmala Sitharaman

'Remove GST On Life Insurance': Nitin Gadkari's Appeal To Nirmala Sitharaman

Amid criticism of Budget 2024 from several quarters, Union Minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari has written to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, requesting her to withdraw the GST imposed on premiums for life and medical insurance plans.

Mr Gadkari has said in his letter that he is writing to the Finance Minister following a memorandum from the Nagpur Divisional Life Insurance Corporation Employees Union.

“Main issue raised by the Union is related to withdrawal of GST on Life and Medical Insurance Premium. Both life insurance and medical insurance premiums attract a GST rate of 18 per cent. Levying GST on life insurance premium amounts to levying tax on the uncertainties of life,” the Road Transport and Highways Minister has written.

“The Union feels that the person who covers the risk of life’s uncertainties to give some protection to the family should not be levied tax on the premium to purchase cover against this risk. Similarly, the 18% GST on medical insurance premium is proving to be a deterrent for the growth of this segment of business, which is socially necessary. Therefore, they have urged withdrawal of GST as mentioned above,” he has added.

Mr Gadkari said the union that met him also raised points related to differential treatment to savings by way of life insurance, re-introduction of IT deduction for health insurance premium and consolidation of public and sector general insurance companies.

“In view of the above, you are requested to consider the suggestion of Withdrawal of GST on Life and Medical Insurance Premium on priority as it becomes cumbersome for the senior citizens as per rules with due verification along with other relevant points raised,” the former BJP has said in his letter to Ms Sitharaman.

Rahul Gandhi's Speech, Nirmala Sitharaman's Viral Reaction And A BJP Pushback

Rahul Gandhi's Speech, Nirmala Sitharaman's Viral Reaction And A BJP Pushback

Nirmala Sitharaman’s facepalm moment in Lok Sabha is all over the internet. It happened when Rahul Gandhi mentioned the traditional pre-Budget ‘Halwa’ ceremony and the lack of diversity in the exercise – an absence of Dalits, Other Backward Classes, Adivasis in its preparation.

The BJP hit back at the Leader of Opposition over his criticism of the government’s alleged neglect of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and OBC, claiming the Congress’ history is “replete with instances of obstructing reservation” for these communities. It also accused the Congress of being “anti-Hindu”.

Mr Gandhi, displaying a picture of the ‘Halwa’ ceremony, said 20 officers worked on preparing the country’s budget and of them, only one was from a minority community and one from the Other Backward Classes (OBC).

“20 officers have prepared the budget of India, in which there is only one minority and one OBC. The budget halwa is being distributed, but 73% of the country’s people are not included in it,” said Mr Gandhi.

At this point, the Finance Minister placed her hands over her face. A disapproving nod followed.

The reaction was not lost on the Congress leader.

“The Finance Minister is laughing. It is quite astonishing. This is not a laughing matter, madam. This is about caste census. It will change the country,” said Mr Gandhi.

Mr Gandhi claimed the sole aim of the Budget is to strengthen the framework of big businesses, political monopoly that destroys the democratic structure, and the deep state or the agencies.

Pushing back, BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh posted on X pictures of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation’s board members which included Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, and asked which of them belong to OBC, SC and ST categories.

“Rajiv Gandhi Foundation Board for your perusal. Identify OBCs, SCs and STs for the use of the Congress and its troll army,” he wrote on X along with a screenshot of the foundation’s website showing its board members.

BJP IT department head Amit Malviya alleged the Congress has been “anti-SC/ST and OBC” since Independence.

“It was the Congress which kept (the) Kelkar Committee recommendation (for Backward Commission) made in 1957 in cold storage until PM Modi gave constitutional status to the OBC Commission in 2018, that too despite Congress’ opposition,” said Mr Malviya.

Rahul Gandhi drew parallels from the Mahabharata, and attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party over the Budget saying that there’s an atmosphere of fear in the country, adding that the country is now trapped in a “Chakravyuh of lotus,” referring to the BJP’s symbol.

Israel, Hezbollah On Brink Of All-Out War After 12 Children Die In Rocket Strike

Israel, Hezbollah On Brink Of All-Out War After 12 Children Die In Rocket Strike

New Delhi:
Israel attacked Hezbollah targets and threatened further retaliation for a rocket strike that resulted in the death of 12. But Israel has also signaled openness to a proposed Gaza truce that could also calm the combustible front with Lebanon.

  1. In the worst single-incident of civilian losses for Israel since Hamas stormed into its southern villages and army bases on October 7, a rocket exploded in Golan Heights on Saturday, killing 12.

  2. The rocket strike hit a football pitch and killed children who local authorities said were aged 10 to 16.

  3. While Israel claims Hezbollah fired a Falaq-1 Iranian rocket at them, the Iran-backed group said it had “no connection” to the incident. The rocket strike has raised fears of a wider conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

  4. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to exact a “heavy price” from Hezbollah. He has held several meeting with his security cabinet and military chiefs to decide on the next course of action.

  5. The US has condemned the rocket attack and called for restraint from all parties.

  6. But Iran issued a warning saying that any new military “adventures” by Israel in Lebanon could lead to “unforeseen consequences”.

  7. Israel says it can’t compromise with enemies sworn to its destruction and blacklisted as terrorists in the West. But domestic pressure for a hostage recovery is growing, and the IDF, which leans on conscripts and reservists, is fatigued.

  8. Reports state that some senior officials within Israel are in favour of a ceasefire within Gaza, after which Hezbollah has assured to not attack Israel.

  9. Israel launched its war against Hamas after the October 7 attacks in which 1,200 people in southern Israel were killed and 250 taken hostage to Gaza. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says the death toll in Gaza has exceeded 39,000.

  10. Hezbollah is far stronger than Hamas was before October 7, with more fighters, missiles and drones. A war would probably be devastating for both Lebanon and Israel, officials from both countries have said.
