Delhi Man, Wanted For Cheating, Records Lawrence Bishnoi's Extortion Call

In the video call, Lawrence Bishnoi is heard demanding Rs 5 crore.

New Delhi:

Lawrence Bishnoi, currently one of the biggest criminals involved in multiple cases including the planting of bombs outside actor Salman Khan’s house, has been recorded trying to extort money from a Delhi-based man wanted in several criminal cases. The man in question is Kunal Chhabra, who is currently in Dubai. He has recorded multiple conversations with Lawrence Bishnoi including one of a video call — where he is purportedly heard demanding money and making threats — copies of which are now in possession of NDTV.  NDTV cannot vouch for the authenticity of the videos.

The calls date back to May 2023 after which, on June 14, Kunal Chhabra had complained to the police. Lawrence Bishnoi, who has been in Gujarat’s Sabarmati jail, has been questioned by the police but it is not clear what action has been taken.

In one of the audio clips, Lawrence Bishnoi is heard saying that because of Kunal Chhabra, 10 of his men have been arrested. “Now you have incurred our enmity… We have suffered a lot because of you. Now our own people will take care of you”.

He also accused Kunal Chhabra of paying money to policemen, because of which the arrests were made.  Chhabra denied he had done anything. “I did not give money to any policemen. I got a call, someone from your STF called from Punjab. he asked me that I got a call and why have I not complained. I said that I do not want to complain. I will also give you the number,” he is heard saying.

In the video call, Bishnoi is heard demanding Rs 5 crore, which Chhabra promised to pay once he returned to India.

Kunal Chhabra had defaulted on the payment on the advice of his friend Nadir Shah, a gym owner from Delhi. On September 12 this year, Nadir Shah was shot dead in south Delhi.

A video from a nearby CCTV camera in Greater Kailash-1 showed him standing and talking to one of his associates when a man in a checked shirt walked up to them and started firing. He was hit six to eight times and was declared dead at a hospital. Sources said Lawrence Bishnoi wanted to send a message to Chhabra by killing Nadir Shah.

Police sources say Kunal Chhabra is an illegal call center mafia who is now wanted by the US federal agency FBI for allegedly cheating American citizens through his call centers.

Delhi Police’s IFS unit had raided many illegal call centers of Chhabra and arrested 12 people. A non-bailable warrant has been issued against him in connection with two cases. When he had registered the extortion complaint against Lawrence Bishnoi, he was already on bail in two cases.

The FBI requests came up later after which the Special Cell of the Delhi Police has also issued a lookout circular against him.

During their investigation, the Special Cell found out that Kunal Chhabra has made property worth several hundred crores by cheating American citizens through illegal call centers, sources said.

These details have been passed on to the Enforcement Directorate and action against him under the anti-money laundering laws has been sought.

“Could Not Die For Our Country, But Can Live For It”: PM Modi In New York

“Could Not Die For Our Country, But Can Live For It”: PM Modi In New York

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing thousands of expat Indians in New York today, said as India’s first Prime Minister born after Independence, he could not give his life for the country, but he could certainly “live for the country”.

PM Modi, who is in the US to attend the Quad summit, spoke to thousands of cheering, applauding Indians at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum — a programme much like his hugely successful “Howdy Modi” community event of 2019, held in Texas.

At the glittering “Modi And US” event, in an address garnished with glittering cultural events, PM Modi said when the freedom movement was on, thousands of people had offered up their lives.

“I could not lay down my life for Swaraj (self rule). But I have decided that i will dedicate my life to Su-raj (good governance) and a prosperous country… I was very clear about this mission from Day One,” PM Modi said.

“I never thought I would become chief minister, but when I did, I became Gujarat’s longest-serving Chief Minister,” he said.

“Then people gave me a promotion and made me PM. But what I have learned by travelling the country is what has made my governance model so strong. In this third term, I am moving ahead with three times more responsibility,” he added.

In the  address, PM Modi covered multiple current events — from the recently concluded Lok Sabha election to the return of 350-plus Indian artifacts by the US government.

Calling the expat Indians the country’s ambassadors (‘Rashtradoot’), the Prime Minister thanked them for the respect India has earned in that country.

The patriotism Indians hold in their hearts, he said, “helps us be peaceful, law abiding global citizens… what makes India proud of its children and makes the world realise that India is the world’s ‘Vishwa-Bandhu’.”

“It is our Indian values and culture that makes us One,” he added.

CSK's IPL 2025 Retention List: Gaikwad, Jadeja, Pathirana In, Says Report. No Place For… | Cricket News

CSK's IPL 2025 Retention List: Gaikwad, Jadeja, Pathirana In, Says Report. No Place For… | Cricket News

The clock is ticking as the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises look to finalise their retention shortlist for the forthcoming mega auction. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly yet to convey the number of retentions a franchise can make ahead of the auction. The entire cricketing fraternity awaits BCCI’s call on the retention policy, but Chennai Super Kings are arguably more desperate to understand the retention guidelines than any other franchise, as the board’s policy could decide whether the legendary MS Dhoni plays another season or not.

According to a report in RevSportz, CSK have already drafted a 5-man shortlist of players they wish to retain ahead of the mega auction. Though there have been reports of the BCCI allowing franchises to retain as many as 6 players, including Right-To-Match, an official decision is yet to be conveyed.

The five players that top CSK’s retention list include the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, and MS Dhoni.

Surprisingly, there was no place for Deepak Chahar, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Maheesh Theekshana, etc. in the retention list the franchise has reportedly drafted. Considering Dhoni might not play beyond the 2025 season, CSK really took a bold call by letting some of their top players go.

CSK’s bosses had earlier also asked BCCI to bring back the old rule which allowed the franchises to retain a retired player in the uncapped category. However, the board hasn’t yet announced its decision on the subject. Whether such categorisation is allowed or not, isn’t yet known, but it is all but certain that Dhoni will be retained in the lowest-paying category.

The said rule allowed players who said goodbye to international cricket for more than 5 years to be treated as uncapped players. The rule started in 2008 and was in implementation till 2021, after which it was discontinued. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2019. If the rule comes back, Dhoni and CSK would benefit.

Dhoni would be hoping to go on a high in IPL 2025 season, after CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs in the 2024 campaign. But, his largely depends on the retention policy the BCCI drafts.

“She Was At A Crossroads”: Cousin Of EY Employee Who Died Of 'Overwork'

“She Was At A Crossroads”: Cousin Of EY Employee Who Died Of 'Overwork'

EY India’s chairman said the company is striving to nurture a harmonious workplace.

New Delhi:

Anna Sebastian Perayil, the 26-year-old EY India employee who allegedly died of ‘overwork’, sparking outrage and a nationwide debate on working conditions, was supposed to get married this month, one of her cousins has revealed.

Sunil George Kuruvilla, an assistant director at research and analytics firm Acuity Knowledge Partners, also recounted that Anna had two options: pursuing an MBA or chartered accountancy, and she chose the latter, going on to join EY India after finishing the course. Quoting Robert Frost’s ‘The Road Not Taken’, he said: “And that has made all the difference.”

After Anna’s mother, Anita Augustine, wrote a letter to EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani on the challenges her daughter faced at work, Mr Memani has said that he will not rest until the company accomplishes its objective of nurturing a harmonious workplace.

In the strongly worded, eloquent LinkedIn post on Friday, Mr Kuruvilla said his second cousin Anna was gone forever but she is now more powerful than ever. Likening her to a canary in the coal mine – a phrase used to speak of indicators or warnings of potential danger – he said what happened to her may save young lives “from the clutches of silver-tongued executives who act like the Grim Reaper.”

“A few years back, Anna was at a crossroads in her career: an MBA from IRMA or a CA degree. She spoke with my dad at length and finally decided to go for a CA degree, against his advice. To echo Frost’s lines, two roads diverged in a wood, and she took one, just as fair. And that has made all the difference,” Mr Kuruvilla wrote.

The executive said he had called Anna’s grandfather after he got news of the death. Her grandfather, he recalled, spoke at length, his voice breaking.

“I didn’t weep, even when he told me her marriage was arranged for this month. Sometimes tears are not enough… I must pause now. But Anna lives on in me and in those who nurture fond memories of her. Anna is more powerful than ever,” he wrote.

Mother’s Letter

In her letter to Mr Memani, Ms Augustine wrote that Anna passed her chartered accountancy exams on November 23 last year and joined EY Pune on March 19, dying just four months later.

“She was full of life, dreams, and excitement for the future. EY was her first job, and she was thrilled to be part of such a prestigious company. But four months later, on July 20th, 2024, my world collapsed when I received the devastating news that Anna had passed away. She was just 26 years old,” she said.

The heartbroken mother said Anna’s workload was so high that she had been complaining of chest constriction for a week after reaching her paying guest accommodation at 1 am every day and insisted on going to work even after seeing a doctor, saying she had a lot of tasks pending and would not get leave.

Ms Augustine also pointed out that no one from the company had attended Anna’s funeral, which the family found deeply hurtful, and added that she hoped that her letter would spark real change so that no other family has to endure what they went through.

Chairman’s Response

Mr Memani said that, as a father, he could understand Ms Augustine’s grief, adding that the fact that no one from the company attended the funeral is alien to their culture.

“I have conveyed my deepest condolences to the family, although nothing can fill the void in their lives. I truly regret the fact that we missed being present at Anna’s funeral. This is completely alien to our culture. It has never happened before; it will never happen again,” he wrote on LinkedIn on Thursday.

“I would like to affirm that the well-being of our people is my top-most priority and I will personally champion this objective. I am absolutely committed to nurturing a harmonious workplace, and I will not rest until that objective is accomplished,” he added.

The Union government has said it is investigating the circumstances that led to Anna’s death and, on Friday, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said he had a “deeply emotional and heartrending” conversation with her father, Sibi Joseph.

Mr Tharoor also said that he had agreed to Mr Joseph’s suggestion to raise the issue of bringing in legislation capping work hours in public and private sector offices to eight hours a day, five days a week.

Atishi To Take Oath Tomorrow, Will Be Delhi's Youngest Chief Minister

Atishi To Take Oath Tomorrow, Will Be Delhi's Youngest Chief Minister

Atishi will take over the top post after Arvind Kejriwal resigned.

New Delhi:

Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi will take oath as Chief Minister of Delhi tomorrow at 4:30 pm. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at the Raj Bhavan – the Lt Governor’s residence – and five AAP MLAs will take oath along with Atishi as ministers.

Atishi will be the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj from the BJP and Sheila Dixit from the Congress. The AAP leader will also be the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi.

Atishi will take over the top post after Arvind Kejriwal – the party’s convenor – resigned after the Supreme Court granted him bail in the liquor policy case which saw his former Deputy, Manish Sisodia, party MP Sanjay Singh being jailed for several months.

Mr Kejriwal walked out of jail after six months and said: “I got justice from the legal courts… now I will get justice from the people’s court. I want to ask the people of Delhi, is Kejriwal innocent or guilty? If I have worked, vote for me.”

Mr Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in March, and again by the Central Bureau of Investigation in June, on money laundering and corruption charges linked to the liquor policy scam.

Last week, while ordering his bail in the former case (after granting relief in the latter in July), the Supreme Court said his “prolonged incarceration amounts to unjust deprivation of liberty”.

The bail conditions included Mr Kejriwal being barred from signing government orders or files without the consent of the Lieutenant Governor, with whom the AAP has had several aggressive run-ins.

BJP, Congress On AAP’s Move

After Arvind Kejriwal announced her as his replacement, Atishi said, This is an emotional moment for the party and people of Delhi. At the same time, the people are resolved to make Kejriwal the Chief Minister again. And, till the election is held and we stake claim to the new government, I will look after Delhi.”

BJP hit back, questioning if this decision was due to a “rift” in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that its leader cannot handle.

“You didn’t resign when in jail, but are now announcing that you will resign in 48 hours? People want to know the mystery behind these 48 hours. You don’t have to discharge duties of the Chief Minister, why do you need 48 hours?” BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi asked.

The Congress, which fought the Lok Sabha polls in Delhi in alliance with AAP, described the Chief Minister’s resignation announcement as a “political stunt”. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said Mr Kejriwal resigned because he has no powers as Chief Minister and is bound by the Supreme Court’s conditions. “This is a political stunt and nothing else. This will have no impact on the upcoming elections. People want change now,” he said.

Ahead Of Lankan Polls, President Tells NDTV About China's Growing Presence

Ahead Of Lankan Polls, President Tells NDTV About China's Growing Presence

South Asia and Indian Ocean region is going through a “difficult time”, Sri Lankan President told NDTV.

Colombo:

The south Asian and Indian Ocean region is going through a “difficult time”, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Thursday in an exclusive interview to NDTV. Sri Lanka will hold elections on September 21 to elect the next President.

Mr Wickremesinghe, who took over as President when Sri Lanka was going through its worst-ever economic crisis, has steered the economy back towards normalcy. His re-election will prove to be an effective referendum on an unpopular International Monetary Fund austerity plan enacted by his government after the island nation’s unprecedented financial crisis.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, 75, is seeking a fresh mandate after claiming credit for stabilising the economy and bringing an end to months of food, fuel and medicine shortages.

In an exclusive interview to NDTV’s Gaurie Dwivedi, Mr Wickremesinghe spoke not just about the domestic challenges Sri Lanka faces, but also the challenges faced by the entire south Asian region, where India plays a leading part.

CRISES IN MALDIVES AND BANGLADESH

“It is a difficult time for the region. Maldives is going through an economic crisis and needs all the help they can get. Bangladesh too is facing a political crisis and we (as neighbours) should ensure that stability returns as soon as possible, after which elections can be held where a new parliament can then decide on a new prime minister,” the Sri Lankan President said, while speaking about the most recent and immediate regional challenges.

He went on to say that of all the others neighbours, “the issue of Bangladesh has the greatest impact on India”, adding that Sri Lanka too has significant investments in Bangladesh, which it views as a “friendly country”. He said he is concerned that if the crisis in Bangladesh is “not resolved in the short-to-medium term, it can have an impact on India.”

SRI LANKA’S CHALLENGES AND ANTI-INDIA REMARKS

In 2022, when Ranil Wickremesinghe took charge as President, Sri Lanka was dealing with civil unrest spurred by the economic crisis. There were protests across the nation which led to thousands storming the Presidential palace which was then occupied by Mr Wickremesinghe’s predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country. Mr Wickremesinghe took charge and restored calm and helped revived the economy by taking some tough decisions.

“Think of the time when all hope was lost… we didn’t have food, gas, medicine, or any hopes. Now you have a choice. Decide if you want to go back to that period of terror, or progress,” Mr Wickremesinghe had said in the closing days of his election campaign. India had stood by Sri Lanka during the crisis and helped revive its economy.

Mr Wickremesinghe told NDTV that it will be his priority to deepen economic ties, especially in infrastructure projects, adding that the two nations have shared cultural and economic ties for “thousands of years”.

His rivals in the elections however have made some strong anti-India remarks, and should they win the election, it may prove to be a challenge for New Delhi and perhaps even a complete reset in ties.

“Let us first watch the elections,” said the Sri Lankan President, hinting at his rivals’ remarks being amplified due to political rhetoric. But he went on to say that “There will be some groups which will make anti-India remarks. That can’t be stopped, but the aim is to minimise it.”

“As far as India-Sri Lanka friendship is concerned, it is decided by the people of both nations and they have already decided it,” he told NDTV.

Ranil Wickremesinghe faces two formidable challengers including Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, the leader of a once-marginal Marxist party tarnished by its violent past. The party led two failed uprisings in the 1970s and 1980s that left more than 80,000 people dead, and won less than four per cent of the vote in the last parliamentary elections.

But Sri Lanka’s crisis has proven an opportunity for Mr Dissanayaka, who has seen a surge of support.

According to news agency AFP, fellow opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, once dismissed as the princeling dynast of a former president assassinated in 1993 during the country’s decades-long civil war, is also favoured to make a strong showing. He has campaigned on a pledge to secure concessions from the IMF.

Speaking to NDTV about China, the Sri Lankan President said that “We’ve had good relations with China and we will continue to do so. But we will look at our interest first,” adding that “We will ensure that nothing (about China ties) will affect the security of India. Our dealings with China will work within the framework” of India’s national security.

GROWING CHINESE PRESENCE IN INDIAN OCEAN

Describing China as a “leading global power”, Mr Wickremesinghe said that “China is going to have an extended influence in the Indian Ocean region. They are already working with a number of countries.”

China is looking to grow its presence in the Indian Ocean and it is already working to build up its presence around the Suez Canal, said Mr Wickremesinghe, adding that China is looking to be a “leading global power after the United States.”

“Sri Lanka will keep working with China, but we will work on our own terms, keeping India’s interests in mind, after all India is just twenty miles away from us and we have shared historic ties” he told NDTV.

With an “all-weather ally” in Pakistan, a “pro-Beijing regime” in Maldives, an increasing presence in Nepal and deepening ties with Bangladesh’s new regime, China has been mounting its presence across south Asia and the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka votes on Saturday to elect their next President, one of the candidates reportedly being openly “pro-China and anti-India”.
