“Slept Late, Woke Up To Gunshots”: Salman Khan To Cops On Firing

Salman Khan House Firing Case: The actor’s statement was recorded by Mumbai police. (File)

Actor Salman Khan has revealed that he woke up to the sound of gunshots on April 14 when two bikers fired shots at his home in Mumbai’s Bandra. Police claim the shooters, hired by Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang, had conspired to kill the 58-year-old film star.

A four-member team, including an officer of the Mumbai Crime Branch, visited Salman Khan’s house on June 4 to record his statement and that of his brother Arbaaz Khan. The brothers were questioned for six hours. Salman Khan reportedly told the police that he realised his life was in danger and thanked them for their help.

In his statement, Salman Khan told the police that he had slept late after a party the night before the incident. The sound of a bullet that was later found to have hit his balcony woke him, he told the police. The actor said after he was jolted awake he went to the balcony to check and looked outside but did not see anyone.

Arbaaz Khan, who was at his Juhu residence at the time of the firing, said he was aware of the past threats from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to his brother.

Salman Khan’s statement was recorded for three hours while his brother was questioned for two hours. The brothers were asked over 150 questions, the police said.

Their father Salim Khan was also at the Bandra apartment when the firing took place but his statement was not recorded due to his age. According to sources, the crime branch will record his statement if required.

Six men have been arrested after two men on a bike opened fire outside Salman Khan’s home on April 14. Vicky Gupta and Sagar Pal were arrested in Gujarat, while Anuj Thapan and another man were detained in Punjab on April 26. Anuj Thapan died in police custody.

According to the police, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang had allegedly conspired to strike Salman Khan’s car in Maharashtra’s Panvel – where he has a farmhouse – armed with weapons sourced from a Pakistani arms supplier. Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, along with his Canada-based cousin Anmol Bishnoi and associate Goldie Brar, had reportedly acquired AK-47s, M-16s, and other high-calibre weapons from a Pakistani arms dealer. The plan was to either ambush the star’s car or attack his farmhouse, sources said.

Unbelievable That Police In 2 States Can't Trace A Woman: High Court

Unbelievable That Police In 2 States Can't Trace A Woman: High Court

The woman’s husband said she was detained by her father as he disapproved of their inter-caste marriage.

Mumbai:

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday pulled up the Maharashtra police for its “superficial” probe in tracing a woman who went missing after she went to Rajasthan three months ago, leaving her baby behind.

A division bench of Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande directed the superintendent of police, Kolhapur, to coordinate with his counterpart in Jalod, Rajasthan and ensure that the woman is traced and produced in court on June 20.

The bench remarked that it was “unbelievable that police machinery of two states, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, were unable to trace a woman”.

The bench was hearing a habeas corpus (produce person in court) petition filed by the woman’s husband from Kolhapur.

The man claimed that his wife was detained by her father as he disapproved of their inter-caste marriage.

As per the plea, the couple tied the knot in February 2022 and had a baby boy in November 2023.

In February this year, the woman was informed by a family member that her father was unwell and wished to see her.

The woman went to Rajasthan to meet her father, leaving her infant son with her husband. However, when she did not return, and when he could not contact her, the man filed a police complaint and then a plea in court.

Last month, the high court had directed the Kolhapur police to visit Rajasthan to track her whereabouts.

On Tuesday, the police’s advocate informed the court that the police visited the woman’s residence in Rajasthan but did not find her.

The police recorded the statement of the woman’s grandparents, who were in the house, and the neighbours.

The bench, however, said just recording the grandparents’ statements was not enough.

“The police have to be told how to inquire? Grandfather said she’s not there, so you came back?” the court said.

The bench said the police should be considerate of the infant, who was without his mother for three months.

“It is difficult to believe that the police of two states have been unable to find the girl. It’s unbelievable. Your (police) methodology is simple. You go and ask the grandparents. Is this the way? Since when the police have become polite?” the bench asked.

“After the court order, the phones (of the woman and her parents) are switched off. You don’t know how to trace that? I thought the Maharashtra police was the best. Have mercy on the three-month-old child without a mother,” the court said.

Asked About Maldivian Probe Into Deals With India, S Jaishankar Says This

Asked About Maldivian Probe Into Deals With India, S Jaishankar Says This

S Jaishankar is among several BJP leaders who retained their ministries.

New Delhi:

S Jaishankar officially assumed office as India’s Foreign Minister today. Mr Jaishankar, 69, was among several senior BJP leaders, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, and Nirmala Sitharaman, who retained their respective ministries from the previous administration.

Discussing India’s relationship with Pakistan and China for the next five years, Mr Jaishankar said the two countries pose different challenges.

“In any country and especially in a democracy, it is a very big deal for a government to get elected three times in a row. So the world will definitely feel that today there is a lot of political stability in India,” Mr Jaishankar noted. “As far as Pakistan and China are concerned, the relations with those countries are different, and the problems there are also different. Our focus with regard to China will be on finding a solution for the border issues and with Pakistan, we would want to find a solution to the issue of years-old cross-border terrorism.”

Mr Jaishankar assumed office in Delhi after a grand swearing-in ceremony, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the oath of office along with 71 ministers of the new coalition government.

On being questioned about the Maldivian parliamentary probe on previous agreements with India, Jaishankar responded diplomatically, reflecting his seasoned approach: “I had a meeting with President Muizzu and even PM Modi met him. I even had the honour to call on him. So I will prefer to be guided by my experience and conversation.”

Ties between India and the Maldives came under severe strain since President Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, took charge of the top office. Within hours of his oath, he had demanded the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from Maldives. The Indian military personnel were replaced by civilians earlier this month.

Addressing India’s ambitions for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in the next five years, Mr Jaishankar said India’s position as a “friend” and the Modi government’s foreign policy will take the country to greater heights.

“It has different aspects and I am fully confident that under PM Modi’s leadership, the foreign policy of Modi 3.0 will be very successful. For us, the influence of India has been steadily growing, not just in terms of our own perception but also what the other countries think. They feel that India is truly their friend and they have seen that in times of crisis, if there is one country that stands with the Global South, it is India. They have seen that when we put forward the African Union membership during the presidency of G20, the world trusted us and our responsibilities are also increasing, so we also believe that under the leadership of PM Modi, India’s identity in the world will definitely increase,” Mr Jaishankar said.

Mr Jaishankar has served as India’s Foreign Secretary under the first Modi government (2015-18) and held ambassadorial roles in the United States (2013-15), China (2009-2013), and the Czech Republic (2000-2004). Additionally, he was India’s High Commissioner to Singapore (2007-2009) and has had assignments in embassies in Moscow, Colombo, Budapest, and Tokyo, along with roles in the Ministry of External Affairs and the President’s Secretariat.

Congress Wins Allahabad Seat After 40 Years, Its Last MP Was Big B

Congress Wins Allahabad Seat After 40 Years, Its Last MP Was Big B

Amitabh Bachchan won the Allahabad Lok Sabha seat in the 1984 election

New Delhi:

The Congress’s win in the Allahabad Lok Sabha seat in this election has ended a 40-year dry patch for the party in the constituency. The last time the Congress won this seat, its MP was none other than megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

As the INDIA Opposition bloc pulled off a stunner in Uttar Pradesh by winning 43 out of 80 seats in this election, Congress’s Ujjwal Raman Singh defeated the BJP’s Neeraj Tripathi by over 58,000 votes.

Ujjwal Raman Singh is the son of senior Samajwadi Party leader and former MP Rewati Raman Singh. Earlier with the Samajwadi Party, Ujjwal Raman Singh has earlier been elected MLA and has also served in the Uttar Pradesh government led by Mulayam Singh Yadav between 2004 and 2007. He joined the Congress earlier this year, reportedly after it became clear that the Allahabad Lok Sabha seat will go to the Congress as part of the seat-sharing agreement in the INDIA Opposition bloc.

Among political heavyweights elected from the prestigious Allahabad seat are two former Prime Ministers — Lal Bahadur Shastri and VP Singh — and BJP stalwart Murli Manohar Joshi. In the 1984 election held in the aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Amitabh Bachchan contested the election from his home town and won by a landslide, getting over 68 per cent voteshare. The opponent was formidable — Lok Dal’s HN Bahuguna, who had already been a central minister and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.

The 1984 election was swept by the Congress, with the party winning 414 Lok Sabha seats and Rajiv Gandhi — also a friend of Mr Bachchan — taking over as Prime Minister. Three years after his election, Mr Bachchan resigned from Lok Sabha and it was VP Singh who was elected in the bye-election.

In the last election, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, earlier with the Congress, won from Allahabad on a BJP ticket. This time, the party replaced her with Neeraj Tripathi, lawyer and son of former West Bengal Governor late KN Tripathi. Neeraj Tripathi has also served as additional advocate general for Uttar Pradesh government.
