“Created Chimera Of Free Water”: Lt Governor's Open Letter To Arvind Kejriwal

“Created Chimera Of Free Water”: Lt Governor's Open Letter To Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi:

Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena has written an open letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in jail in connection with the liquor policy case, after a note by AAP minister Atishi to him seeking suspension of the CEO of Delhi Jal Board over a murder triggered by a water dispute in the national capital. “It has become habitual on the part of your ministers to blame officers for their own fault,” he wrote, stressing he had to write the open letter as “direct communication with you in present circumstances is not possible”.

He also accused the AAP government of deceiving the people by “creating a chimera of free water”. “Instead of fixing the iniquitous water supply, you and your ministers created a chimera of free water. Deception of people has been mastered into an art form by you and your minister,” he said.

The Aam Aadmi Party swiftly responded to the letter and accused the Lt Governor of encouraging officers to obstruct the work of the Delhi Jal board. “The Lt Governor is responsible for stopping DJB’s work. He encourages officers to do so. No action was taken against the officers despite repeated requests,” said Atishi.

A woman was killed following a quarrel with her neighbour over taking water from a common tap in Farsh Bazar area in north-east Delhi.

“In light of this shocking incident of the death of a woman in Farsh Bazar following violence due to water shortage, Hon’ble LG is requested to immediately suspend the CEO of Delhi Jal Board within 24 hours as this criminal negligence has taken place under his watch,” Atishi, who holds the water portfolio, alleged in the note.

Hitting back, Mr Saxena said Atishi indicted her own government by “underlining the inadequate supply of water as the cause of the incident”. “Atishi has ironically indicted her own government of more than nine years. Her note indeed is a prima facie admission of guilt, inaction and inefficiency over,” he added.

Detailing the crisis in numbers, Mr Saxena claimed of about 2.5 crore people in the city, “more than 2 crore (over 80%) people are deprived of drinking water supply in varying degrees”.

“It simply points to the fact that there has been no effort whatsoever during the last ten years for plugging the leaks and we seem to be spending thousands of crores in pumping water into a leaking bucket,” the Lt Governor claimed.

Atishi, in her note, alleged “inaction” by officers of the Delhi Jal Board and claimed that “there has been a concerted conspiracy to stop the funds of Delhi Jal Board in the FY 2023-24”.

Rebutting her claim, Mr Saxena said, “Since 2015, Rs 28,400 crore has been spent as Capital Expenditure by DJB. However, according to the Economic Survey 2023-24, over the last decade, water treatment capacity has grown marginally from 906 MGD to 946 MGD, a barely 4.4 percent increase.”

Mr Saxena, who is often at odds with the AAP government, took a dig at the Chief Minister’s promise to “transform Delhi into Singapore”. “It would be educative to know that in Singapore “unaccounted for water” is just five per cent, compared to Delhi’s 58 per cent. Even other Indian cities fare much better than Delhi – Chennai (35 per cent), Mumbai (27 per cent), Pune (35 per cent).

Unaccounted for water is a sum of water leakages by way of transmission and distribution losses, water theft and non-payment of dues.

He also alleged there was a stark difference between the water supply to affluent societies and to slums and unauthorised colonies. “The rich in the city staying in affluent colonies have round-the-clock water supply and get as high as 500 litres per person per day- which translates to nearly 35 buckets of water per person per day while in unauthorised colonies and slums, water availability is less than 50 litre per person per day,” he said. “Many of these settlements receive water supply for barely half an hour a day. In some cases, water is supplied on alternate days,” Mr Saxena added.

VK Saxena also alleged that seven per cent of households – an average of 20 lakh people, still do not receive piped water supply.

“Genocide Joe” Slogans Raised At Donald Trump's Rally, His Response

“Genocide Joe” Slogans Raised At Donald Trump's Rally, His Response

Trump is set to take on Joe Biden in the US election due later this year

New Delhi:

Amid the escalation in West Asia after Iran’s drone strike on Israel, “Genocide Joe” slogans targeting US president Joe Biden were raised at a public meeting by former president Donald Trump, who is set to take on Biden in the US election later this year. As the slogans at Schnecksville in Pennsylvania grew louder, Trump said, “They are not wrong. They are not wrong. He has done everything wrong.”

“Genocide Joe” is a phrase used by pro-Palestine protesters to slam Biden for unconditionally backing Israel for its offensive against Gaza, especially in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks by Hamas. Over 33,000 Palestinians have been killed so far.

The slogan’s use at a Trump rally and his endorsement of it is curious, to say the least. The Republican leader has unequivocally sided with Israel as far as the Palestine issue is concerned. In fact, in an interview earlier this month, he said Israel needs to “finish what they started” and “get it over with fast”. “You’ve got to get it over with, and you have to get back to normalcy. And I’m not sure that I’m loving the way they’re doing it, because you’ve got to have victory. You have to have a victory, and it’s taking a long time,” he said in The Hugh Hewitt Show.

The former US president defended his comments in an interview with Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, in which he said Israel needed to “finish up” its war with Hamas and that the country was “losing a lot of support” among the world. “What I said very plainly is get it over with, and let’s get back to peace and stop killing people. And that’s a very simple statement. Get it over with. They’ve got to finish what they finish. They have to get it done,” he doubled down.

Responding to Iran firing over 300 drones and missiles at Israel, Trump said at the Pennsylvania rally, “God bless the people of Israel. They are under attack right now. That’s because we show great weakness.”

The “weakness” remark was an apparent jab at his rival, Biden. The 81-year-old leader has publicly expressed “ironclad” support to Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu administration, but multiple reports in the US media say he is looking to de-escalate. With elections approaching, Biden is extra cautious and aware that his handling of the West Asia situation is being closely watched.

The attack on an Iranian embassy in Syria’s Damascus, allegedly by Israel, and Tehran’s drone strike response, has complicated the US’s situation further. While Netanyahu has vowed a fitting response, a high-ranking US official has told news agency AFP that Biden has told the Israel Prime Minister that Washington won’t provide military backing for any retaliatory action. “We would not be a part of any response they do. We would not envision ourselves participating in such an act,” he said.

Iran has, meanwhile, warned that its response “will be much larger” than the drone strikes if Israel retaliates. Iran’s armed forces chief General Mohammad Bagheri has told state media that it would target US bases too if Washington backs Israel’s counterstrike.

Founder Of 2nd Biggest Poll Bonds Buyer Lives In A 'Diamond House'

Founder Of 2nd Biggest Poll Bonds Buyer Lives In A 'Diamond House'

The CBI has registered a case of bribery against Megha Engineering.

Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd, which has emerged as the second-biggest buyer of electoral bonds and is the subject of a bribery case filed by the CBI, is owned by a billionaire who is the fifth child of a farmer from Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district.

Refusing to let his humble beginnings prevent him from sowing the seeds of what would become a behemoth valued at Rs 67,500 crore, Pamireddy Pitchi Reddy himself commands a personal net worth of $2.3 billion (approximately Rs 19,230 crore), according to Forbes. He also now lives in a house in Hyderabad which is shaped like a diamond.

PP Reddy started the company with a capital of just Rs 5 lakh from a shed at Balanagar in Hyderabad under the name of Megha Engineering Enterprises and built pipes for municipalities. His nephew, PV Krishna Reddy, joined the company two years later and the two men slowly branched out into building roads and taking up small infrastructure projects, eventually changing the company’s name to Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) in 2006.

With the elder Reddy as the chairman of the company and the nephew as the managing director, MEIL started making a name for itself in a crowded industry filled with competitors with deep pockets, and went on to become one of India’s top-performing unlisted companies.

The company slowly began taking up major projects like highways and power plants and then expanded to over 20 states and multiple countries, including Bangladesh and Kuwait.

One of the company’s most talked-about projects is the construction of the Zojila tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity between Ganderbal in Kashmir and Drass in Kargil. The cost of the project is around Rs 25,000 crore.

Other key contracts include the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation project in Telangana and the construction of the Bandra-Kurla Complex Station for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, which is being carried out in collaboration with another company.

PP Reddy now lives in a house built to look like a diamond in Hyderabad, which is now one of the city’s landmarks. He also has a golf course in his farmhouse.

MEIL had bought electoral bonds worth Rs 966 crore and emerged as the second-biggest buyer after Future Gaming, owned by ‘Lottery King’ Santiago Martin.

The CBI has registered a bribery case against the company and some government officials. The eight officials are accused of receiving a bribe of Rs 78 lakh in exchange for clearing MEIL’s bills of Rs 174 crore related to the Jagdalpur integrated steel plant in Chhattisgarh.

Regional Tensions Soar As Iran Preps To Attack Israel: 10 Points

Regional Tensions Soar As Iran Preps To Attack Israel: 10 Points

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled their homes on both sides of the border

Regional tensions have soared after Iran threatened reprisals over an Israeli strike on Iran’s embassy in Damascus this month that killed two Iranian generals.

Here are 10 points on the big story

  1. Since Iran viewed the embassy strike as equivalent to an attack on its own territory, sources say, a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran itself rather than a proxy such as Hezbollah in Lebanon was a real possibility.

  2. Countries including India, France and Russia have warned their citizens against travel to the region, already on edge over the war in Gaza, now in its seventh month.

  3. US President Joe Biden said he was expecting Iran to attempt to strike Israel in the short term and pledged “ironclad” support for Washington’s top regional ally despite diplomatic tensions over Israel’s military conduct in Gaza. “We are devoted to the defense of Israel, we will support Israel, we will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” he said.

  4. Iranian sources and diplomats from the US say Tehran has signalled to Washington that it wishes to avoid escalation and will not act hastily.

  5. A defence official said the Pentagon was “moving additional assets to the region to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase force protection for US forces.”

  6. Washington, which has had no diplomatic relations with Tehran since the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution, also asked its allies to use their influence with Iran to urge restraint.

  7. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had warned earlier this week that Israel “must be punished and will be punished”, days after one of his advisers said Israeli embassies are “no longer safe”.

  8. The Israeli military said it had not issued fresh instructions to civilians, but that its forces were on high alert and prepared for a range of scenarios.

  9. Iran has missiles capable of hitting Israel directly and in recent weeks, Israel has bolstered its air defences, which have intercepted thousands of rockets fired by Hamas from Gaza and by Hezbollah from Lebanon.

  10. Tens of thousands of civilians have fled their homes on both sides of the border. The Israeli military has called back reservists in preparation for any escalation along its northern border, where it exchanges fire almost daily with Hezbollah.
