Delhi Liquor Policy Case: BRS Leader K Kavitha Denied Interim Bail

Delhi Excise Scam Case: K Kavitha was arrested on March 15 amid protests by BRS supporters.

New Delhi:

A court in New Delhi on Monday denied interim bail to BRS leader K Kavitha in the Delhi excise policy-related money laundering case.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja dismissed the plea, saying the stage was not right to enlarge her on interim bail.

Kavitha had approached the court for interim bail, saying her 16-year-old son has exams and needs his mother’s “moral and emotional support”.

The Enforcement Directorate had opposed the submission, claiming K Kavitha destroyed evidence and influenced witnesses in the case.

The agency had alleged that K Kavitha is a key member of the “South Group”, which has been accused of paying the ruling AAP in Delhi kickbacks of Rs 100 crore in return for a big share of liquor licences in the national capital.

K Kavitha, 46, was arrested from her Banjara Hills residence on March 15 amid protests by BRS supporters.

She was then sent to seven-day Enforcement Directorate custody the next day. Her custodial interrogation was later extended by three days. She was sent to 14-day judicial custody last Tuesday.

A 500-Grave Kutch Necropolis Leads To 5,700-Year-Old Harappan Settlement

A 500-Grave Kutch Necropolis Leads To 5,700-Year-Old Harappan Settlement

Archaeologists have said the settlement site dates back to 5,700 years ago

Ahmedabad:

A necropolis with over 500 graves in Gujarat’s Kutch, first unearthed in 2018, has led a team of archaeologists to a fascinating discovery – a Harappan-era settlement going back more than 5,000 years ago.

Dr Subhash Bhandari, head of archaeology department At Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kachchh University, said that the 2018 excavation of the necropolis near Juna Khatiya village had thrown up some key questions. “It was necessary to find out where these people stayed. This was a major question and we were looking for the answer,” he said.

This search took the team of archaeologists to Padta Bet – about 1.5 km from the burial site. “We have found a settlement on a hillock about 200 m x 200 m in size. A river flowed behind the hillock once. During our excavation at the site, we found round as well as rectangular structures where people stayed. We have also found pots, big and small, and dishes,” he said.

Dr Bhandari said the team also found semi-precious stones such as carnelian and agate, shell fragments and hammer stones at the site. “We can say that this settlement site is around 5,700 years old,” he said, adding that the settlement appears to have been populated from the early Harappan to the late Harappan era.

The team, he said, has also found remains of cows and goats. “We can say that the settlers here were involved in animal husbandry,” he said, adding that they have also found remains of a human skeleton.

Rajesh SV, assistant professor with University of Kerala and co-director of this project, told The Indian Express, “The hillock at Padta Bet may be one of the sites catering to the skeletal remains (in the burial ground) found at Juna Khatiya. Right now it suggests that this was one of the many settlements whose burial site was Juna Khatiya.”

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

At Padta Bet, the researchers have identified two localities with archaeological deposits. Professor Abhayan GS, HOD of Archaeology at University of Kerala, who led the excavation at Padta Bet, said it is possible that population growth led to people spreading out from one locality to the other. The other hypothesis is that they were inhabited during different periods.

On why the site of settlement has few structures, Professor Abhayan said, “This site is on a hillock, so the landscape is unstable. This could have led to the collapse of many structures over time.”

The location of the Padta Bet site, he said, was very important. “You can see the surrounding mountains and valley from here. The river flowing nearby may have been the main source of water for those living here.”

Dr Bhandari said they are now focusing on unearthing more about the link between the burial site and the settlement. “We will try to find out more about the people who lived there. This site is on a hillock, so they got a clear view of the surroundings. We will try to find out whether that was from a strategic point of view or due to the availability of water nearby. We will also try to find out their food habits. We have found stones, so we will explore if their occupation was largely pastoral or they were also into trade,” he said.

The institutions involved in the project include University of Kerala, Kachchh University, Pune’s Deccan College, Central University of Karnataka, three Spanish institutes – Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology, Spanish National Research Council, and University of La Laguna, Albion College and Texas A&M University in the US.

Official Suspended After AAP Alleges Abusive Language In Reply To Application

Kaithal:

The Haryana government suspended the Kaithal sub-divisional magistrate-cum-assistant returning officer on Saturday, a day after the AAP alleged that its application seeking permission for two poll programmes was denied with abusive language in the reply.

According to an official order, Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer Brahm Parkash has been suspended with immediate effect.

During the period of suspension, the headquarters of Parkash will be in the office of the chief secretary to the Haryana government in Chandigarh and he will not leave the headquarters without the chief secretary’s prior permission, the order said.

The AAP had alleged that its application seeking permission for two poll events from the authorities concerned was denied with abusive language in the reply.

Taking cognisance of the matter, Parkash had ordered the suspension of five computer operators and directed police to conduct a thorough probe.

Sushil Gupta, the Haryana unit chief of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha election from the Kurukshetra constituency, had on Friday said the party had sought permission for the two poll programmes on April 7.

Kaithal is located within the Kurukshetra parliamentary constituency.

“In the reply we received, in one case, it was mentioned in writing that the permission has been rejected. In another, abuses were mentioned in the column where reasons for either approval or rejection have to be given,” Gupta had said.

Nothing can be more shameful than the use of such objectionable language, he had said while requesting the Election Commission for strict action in the matter.

AAP leaders said they had applied for the permission for the April 7 programmes on the designated portal.

The Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to be held in seven phases starting April 19 and the counting of votes will be taken up on June 4.

Haryana goes to polls on May 25.

AI Job Cuts Coming? Survey Shows Companies Plan To Shrink Workforce

AI Job Cuts Coming? Survey Shows Companies Plan To Shrink Workforce

The survey is one of the largest into the AI topic.

A new survey by staffing firm Adecco Group suggests a wave of automation is coming, with 41% of executives at large companies worldwide expecting to reduce their workforce due to artificial intelligence (AI) within the next five years.

This news comes amidst the growing adoption of generative AI, a technology capable of creating realistic text, images, and videos. While some see it as a tool to eliminate repetitive tasks, others fear it will render entire jobs obsolete.

“Almost all jobs are going to be impacted by AI one way or another,” Adecco CEO Denis Machuel told Reuters. “AI can be a job killer, and it can also be a job creator.

“Ten years ago, there was this big fear that many jobs were going to be destroyed by digital, when actually lots of jobs had been created by the digital world,” he said. “Between jobs created by AI and jobs destroyed, we believe this is going to be balanced.”

The survey included executives from 18 industries across nine countries, encompassing both white-collar and blue-collar jobs. This paints a more concerning picture than a previous World Economic Forum poll where half of companies believed AI would create new jobs, not eliminate them.

Recent tech industry layoffs lend credence to these concerns. Companies like Google and Microsoft are shifting focus towards AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, leading to job cuts. Even outside tech firms like Dropbox and Duolingo have cited AI as a reason for downsizing.

Economists at Goldman Sachs previously warned that generative AI could eliminate or significantly impact up to 300 million jobs globally, with white-collar workers most vulnerable. The Adecco survey suggests this prediction may become a reality within the next five years.

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s Wife Undergoes Cancer Surgery. He Says ‘Rarest Of Rare…” | Cricket News

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s Wife Undergoes Cancer Surgery. He Says ‘Rarest Of Rare…” | Cricket News

Former Indian cricket team batter and cricket commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu provided a huge update on his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s cancer operation. She has been suffering from breast cancer and this was her second operation after undergoing chemotherapy.  “Operation for rarest of rare Metastasis – lasted three and a half hours …. Affected skin removed and reconstruction done with flaps … her resolve is steadfast , the smile never leaves her face – courage thy name is Noni … Dr Rupinder hoping for a speedy recovery….,” he posted on X (formerly called Twitter).

Sidhu believes that Rohit Sharma would not have been replaced by Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians captain had the BCCI named him skipper for the T20 World Cup last year itself.
Rohit was declared captain of India’s yet-to-be-named T20 World Cup squad in February this year by BCCI secretary Jay Shah at an event in Ahmedabad, a good two months after he was replaced by Pandya as MI skipper.

“If the BCCI had named Rohit as captain for the T20 World Cup in October, the franchise wouldn’t have chosen Hardik as captain. It’s a matter of the franchise’s respect. So, the actual issue here is timing,” Sidhu said in ‘Star Sports Press Room’.

Pandya has been facing hostility from fans in the ongoing IPL, booed in all three matches so far, including the one at MI’s home turf of Wankhede, besides ending up on the losing side.

Sidhu said the fans’ reaction is quite understandable as Rohit is a much-loved cricketer.

“Nobody can digest the fact that India’s hero, India’s captain, is not the captain of our franchise. ‘What wrong has he done?’ is what fans of the franchise would be thinking. But what does he have to do? “There is nothing that succeeds like success. If he had won these two matches, there wouldn’t have been any noise,” he pointed out.

Talking about other teams in the IPL, Sidhu felt Royal Challengers Bengaluru have become predictable, especially in their spin bowling.

“The biggest thing needed in the winning of a team is that they are not dependent on just one individual to achieve victory. We do talk about Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis, but you got to saddle the right horse.

“The chain is as strong as the weakest link, and their weakness lies in the spin department. Their spinners are just not there, so therefore they will have to replenish that area. Like, RCB had (Wanindu) Hasaranga, who was pretty good and even before him, there was Yuzvendra Chahal,” he observed.

“But they let them go and that has created a void in their bowling line-up. RCB haven’t been able to fill that void, which makes them predictable. Now look at (MS) Dhoni – when he comes, no one knows his plan,” he said.
