Congress Expels Sanjay Nirupam For 6 Years After He Targets Team Thackeray

Congress Expels Sanjay Nirupam For 6 Years After He Targets Team Thackeray

A defiant Mr Nirupam had said he would announce his next course of action on Thursday.

Capping a day of fast-moving developments, the Congress has expelled Sanjay Nirupam, a senior leader from Maharashtra, for six years for his “anti-party statements”. Earlier on Wednesday, the party had removed him from the list of star campaigners for the Lok Sabha elections and sources had said that a proposal to expel him was being prepared by the state unit to be sent to the central leadership.

The proposal was made after Mr Nirupam made a string of remarks against Congress’ INDIA ally, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and its leader Uddhav Thackeray after it announced some candidates for the Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra – including the North West Mumbai seat, which was reportedly being eyed by the Congress leader.

Before that, he had also made remarks on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the convenor of another party ally, AAP, which were not in line with the Congress’ official stand.

Announcing Mr Nirupam’s expulsion late on Wednesday, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said in a statement, “Taking note of the complaints of indiscipline and anti-party statements, the Hon’ble Congress President has approved the expulsion of Shri Sanjay Nirupam from the party for six years with immediate effect.”

Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole had said, “We have taken him (Mr Nirupam) off the list of star campaigners and have also initiated disciplinary action against him over the statements he made.”

After he was removed as the star campaigner, a defiant Mr Nirupam had hit out at the Congress and said he would announce his next course of action on Thursday.

Personal Attacks

The Shiv Sena (UBT), which is in the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance in Maharashtra with the Congress and the NCP, had declared its list of 16 candidates for the Lok Sabha elections on March 27. The list included the name of Amol Kirtikar – son of the sitting MP – for the North West Mumbai seat, prompting a tirade from Mr Nirupam.

“The way Shiv Sena UBT has taken five seats of Mumbai, it seems that there is a plan to bury Congress in Mumbai. It seems the Shiv Sena wants to force Congress to kneel,” the senior Congress leader, who has been a Lok Sabha MP from the Mumbai North constituency, a Rajya Sabha MP and the Mumbai unit president of the party, said.

“I appeal to the Congress leadership to intervene or end the alliance with Shiv Sena. If the Shiv Sena thinks it can fight alone, it is making a big mistake,” he added.

Taking a dig at Uddhav Thackeray over the split in the Shiv Sena engineered by the current Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Mr Nirupam called him the “bachi kuchi Shiv Sena pramukh (chief of what’s left of the Shiv Sena)”.

He also hit out at Mr Kirtikar, alleging that he was involved in the ‘Khichdi scam’ – the alleged irregularities in the distribution of food to migrant workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Nirupam’s remarks were seen as adding to the seat-sharing troubles of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, which is part of the INDIA alliance at the Centre.

‘Will Announce Decision Tomorrow’

After he was removed from the list of star campaigners, Mr Nirupam had alluded to the Congress’ accounts being frozen and said it should utilise its stationery and energy to save itself.

In a post on X, the leader wrote in Hindi, “The Congress party should not waste energy and stationery on me. It should utilise the stationery and energy to save itself since the party is experiencing a serious financial crisis. The timeframe I had given to the party ends today. I will spell out my next course of action tomorrow,” he tweeted.

The timeframe was a reference to his earlier comments giving the Congress a week to decide on ending the alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT).

Should Mr Nirupam decide to switch sides, he is likely to be spoilt for choice as leaders from both the BJP and the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena have said he would be welcome in their parties.

“Sole Purpose Of Arrest To Humiliate Me”: Arvind Kejriwal's Bail Hearing

“Sole Purpose Of Arrest To Humiliate Me”: Arvind Kejriwal's Bail Hearing

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal – arrested in the alleged liquor policy scam – lashed out at the Enforcement Directorate Wednesday, declaring “the sole purpose of the arrest is to humiliate me… to incapacitate me”. Arguing for interim relief before the Delhi High Court, Mr Kejriwal said the ED had acted without any “inquiry, statement, or material that could be the basis of an arrest”.

The AAP boss – whose arrest weeks before the Lok Sabha election led to furious protests and claims the ruling BJP is trying to shut down rival parties to ensure a massive victory – accused the agency of preventing him from participating in elections. “Efforts are being made to break the AAP,” he said.

Appearing for the Chief Minister, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued the ED “does not have any evidence against Arvind Kejriwal”. “While arresting Mr Kejriwal, no attempt was made to take his statement at home… ED should have done this before arresting him,” he said.

“‘Level playing field’ (before an election) is not just a phrase. It is part of ‘free and fair elections’ which is part of a democratic structure. This case reeks of timing issues,” Mr Singhvi began.

“What is this urgency? I am not talking about politics… I am talking about law,” he continued, arguing the arrest was meant to “demolish Aam Aadmi Party before first vote is cast”.

The AAP is part of the Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc that is bidding to stop Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP from winning a third consecutive term.

Mr Singhvi also questioned the ED over the issue of multiple summons to the Chief Minister, particularly after the AAP leader had moved the court to challenge the agency’s call.

“…my not responding to summons is a nice point of prejudice… it is a red herring,” he said, referring to the nine letters sent by the ED demanding that Mr Kejriwal join the investigation.

“Was there a possibility of Arvind Kejriwal fleeing? Did he try to influence any witness in one-and-a half years? Did he refuse to be questioned?” the senior advocate asked.

Mr Singhvi also referred to the clutch of statements against the Delhi Chief Minister.

“…in first statements there will be nothing against me. Then some are arrested and, for first time, they give a statement against me and get bail without objection. Then they get pardon and become approver,” he said, “It’s a completely biased approach. It’s not the way criminal law can be applied.”

This point was also made Tuesday, when the Supreme Court granted bail to AAP MP Sanjay Singh, who had been arrested in October in the same case.

The court observed Dinesh Arora – one of the accused-turned-approvers – did not implicate Mr Singh initially. Mr Singh was arrested after he was named in a later statement. Dinesh Arora got bail in August.

“Prosecution is saying, ’till you give statement against Kejriwal, I’ll keep recording…'”

“Is it not shameful? Out of 13 statements by (Magunta) Reddy, he says nothing in 11. But the judge will go by one? All others are also under Section 50 (of the PMLA),” Mr Singhvi said.

Mr Kejriwal – whom the ED has said is the “kingpin” in the alleged scam – is currently in Delhi’s Tihar Jail; on Tuesday he was remanded to judicial custody till April 15, after spending over 10 days in the agency’s lock-up. The ED did not seek further custody but said his release could hamper its probe.

  • 20:50 (IST)

IPL 2024 Live: Poor from Siraj

On the fifth ball, RCB took a review against a wide after a half-hearted appeal for a caught behind for the wicket of Quinton de Kock. RCB vs LSG Live: OUT!

8.5 – After leaking a lot of runs, Mohammed Siraj has finally got his first wicket. He seemed off the radar so far but this wicket might boost his confidence. It was a short ball and Devdutt Padikkal edged it high in the air before wicketkeeper Anuj Rawat took a brilliant catch running behind.

    LSG 73/2 (9)

  • 20:08 (IST)

LIVE Score: Maxwell continues to impress

Glenn Maxwell has bowled yet another economical over. Only three runs came off his third over. This man has made RCB’s comeback possible in the match despite LSG losing only one wicket. In the three overs he has bowled so far, Maxwell has conceded only 15 runs.

    LSG 62/1 (8)

  • 20:04 (IST)

    IPL 2024 Live: Catch dropped!

So close, yet so far was the case there! Quinton de Kock mistimed Reece Topley’s second ball of the over and Glenn Maxwell at mid-off had a tough chance there. He ran behind, giving the ball a good chase and then timed his jump well too but failed to hold on to the catch. De Kock was batting on 32 when the catch was dropped.

    LSG 59/1 (7)

  • 19:56 (IST)

    RCB vs LSG Live: OUT!

5.3 – KL Rahul is OUT! It was a good length ball and Rahul wanted to loft it from the back foot. A failure in judging the length saw Rahul mistiming the ball high in the air inside the circle. Mayank Dagar settled under the ball comfortably and took the catch at cover. Rahul departs for 20 off 14.

    LSG 54/1 (6)

  • 19:53 (IST)

    RCB vs LSG Live: SIX!

You can’t bowl there to this man. Yash Dayal went with a fuller delivery and KL Rahul smashed it down the ground for a six. With both long-on and long-off inside the circle, you can’t bowl there. Rahul hit somewhat similar shot on the next ball as well but he could get only two runs off it. A total of 10 runs came off the over. RCB are yet to get the first breakthrough.

    LSG 46/0 (5)

RCB vs LSG Live: Mohsin Khan out, Yash Thakur in for LSG!

“It is a bit different. Been used to coming here and walking into the home dressing room, bit different when I walk into the visiting dressing room. We have showed character in both games. Everyone is chipping in and that gives you a lot of confidence, we need to keep doing that and keep getting better. Some of the guys have gotten better with their skills since season one, the combination is coming well as a team. Now we need to put some runs on the board and put pressure on the oppositon. More than the victory everyone was talking about Mayank’s pace, he has been with us since the first season and was unlucky to miss out last season with injury. Just one change – Moshin Khan has a sore back and Yash Thakur comes in,” said LSG captain KL Rahul after the toss.

  • 19:06 (IST)

IPL 2024 Live Score: One change for RCB!

“We are going to chase. The previous game we played on here first innings it was slower. Some places it is patchy and dry. It really important to find some answers. We have had some really good conversations. It would be good if you keep learning from the mistakes. There is a touch of moisture and let’s see how it goes. (Reece) Topley comes in for Alzarri (Joseph),” RCB captain Faf du Plessis said after the toss.

IPL 2024 Live: RCB opt to bowl

Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Faf du Plessis wins toss, opts to bowl vs Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024 match.

RCB vs LSG Live: Mayank Yadav in spotlight

The Lucknow side and the whole of the Indian cricket ecosystem too will be delighted to see the emergence of Mayank Yadav, a fast bowler who can effortlessly touch 150 clicks. But the 21-year-old Delhi quick will have a different kind of test at Chinnaswamy as compared to the Ekana Stadium, the venue of his IPL debut against Punjab. Here, Mayank will have to nullify a smoother pitch and shorter boundaries but the current form of RCB batters will certainly fill him with the hopes of swelling his tally of wickets.

  • 18:51 (IST)

RCB vs LSG Live Score: KL Rahul under scanner

On the other hand, the Super Giants have their own set of worries as the fitness of regular captain Rahul, who came in as an Impact Sub in their 21-run win over Punjab Kings, will be closely monitored. Will the LSG continue to use Rahul as an impact player with Nicholas Pooran wearing the captain’s armband or will he return to his normal three-in-one role of skipper, batter and wicketkeeper? We will have to wait for the answer.

  • 18:48 (IST)

Bengaluru vs Lucknow Live: RCB’s weak spin department

The spin unit of RCB offers an even more bewildering view as none among Glenn Maxwell, Karn Sharma and Mayank Dagar, the most impressive of the lot, have bowled their full quota of four overs in any of the three previous matches. In fact, Maxwell’s off-spin was not even employed in their last match against the Knight Riders. To make matters worse, they don’t have many reliable choices in the dugout too.

  • 18:46 (IST)

LIVE Score: Siraj, Joseph out of form

The senior batters’ struggles have percolated to their bowling department too. Mohammed Siraj offers the most glaring example. The lead pacer has taken just two wickets in three matches, conceding 10 runs an over and he needs to step up immediately. Siraj’s lack of bite has robbed RCB of a chance to take some early wickets in the Powerplay and put the opposition under pressure, something he had done quite consistently during IPL 2023. The situation has turned even grimmer as Siraj’s new-ball partner Alzarri Joseph, RCB’s Rs 11.5 crore buy in the auction, has been totally rudderless, taking a solitary wicket and leaking 9.4 runs per over. So, the hosts might ponder the inclusion of either Reece Topley or Lockie Ferguson against Lucknow in place of the West Indian.

Bengaluru vs Lucknow Live Score: Patidar might get an axe

The poor form of the top-order batters, barring Virat Kohli, meant that RCB had to often rely on their late-order batters like Dinesh Karthik, Anuj Rawat and Mahipal Lomror to add meat to the total. In that context, the RCB might give a break to Patidar for this game and bring in someone like Suyash Prabhudessai, who can also roll his arm for an over or two.

  • 18:34 (IST)

RCB vs LSG Live Score: Concerns in RCB’s batting

The RCB batting line-up has Virat Kohli as the only constant with two fifties from three matches. But Du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Rajat Patidar and Cameron Green, who constitute the cream of RCB’s top and middle-order, have so far made up for a faltering coalition. The quartet’s collective returns from three matches stand at – Du Plessis (46, Avg: 15.33), Maxwell (31, Avg: 10.33), Green (54, Avg: 18) and Patidar (21, Avg: 7), and terming them underwhelming is an understatement.

11 Killed As Israel Strikes Iran Embassy In Syria

11 Killed As Israel Strikes Iran Embassy In Syria

The Iran Revolutionary Guards strongly condemned the attack in a statement.

Tehran:

Israeli air strikes destroyed the Iranian embassy’s consular annex in Damascus Monday, Syrian and Iranian officials said, with a top Revolutionary Guard commander among seven members the force said were killed, amid worsening regional tensions.

Israel said it would not comment on the reported attack, but Iranian officials vowed a stiff response with fears of even further violence between Israel and Iran’s allies triggered by the Gaza war.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps named Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi and another high-ranking officer, Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, as among seven of its members killed.

Britain-based war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 11 people, including several Guards members, were killed when “Israeli missiles… destroyed the building of an annex to the Iranian embassy”.

The toll includes “eight Iranians, two Syrians and one Lebanese — all of them fighters, none of them civilians,” Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Observatory with a network of sources in Syria, told AFP.

Iran’s ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, giving a lower toll, told Iranian state TV that “at least five people were killed in the attack which was carried out by F-35 fighter jets” which fired six missiles at the building.

AFP reporters saw the annex building had caved in, and emergency services were rushing to search for victims under the rubble as sirens wailed in the upscale Damascus district of Mazzeh.

Security personnel shielded the site where earth-moving equipment was brought in to clear the debris and remove charred vehicles from the road outside, watched by a crowd of onlookers.

Syria’s defence ministry said “the attack destroyed the entire building, killing and injuring everyone inside, and work is underway to recover the bodies and rescue the wounded from under the rubble”.

– Regional tensions –

Iranian state TV said Zahedi — a senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ foreign operations arm, the Quds Force — was among the dead.

The Observatory said Zahedi served as the leader of the Quds Force for Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, adding that he was killed along with his deputy, his aide, and the Quds force chief of staff for the same three countries.

Two other members of the Guards and two Iranian advisers were also killed in the strike, the Observatory said.

The targeted building is next to the Iranian embassy, the front of which is decorated with a large portrait of Qassem Soleimani, the architect of Iran’s military operations in the Middle East, killed in January 2020 in an American drone strike in Iraq.

The Damascus strikes were the fifth in a week to hit Syria, whose President Bashar al-Assad is supported by Iran, Israel’s long-time arch foe in the region.

Syria’s state news agency SANA had earlier reported that “our air defence systems confronted enemy targets in the vicinity of Damascus”.

Iran’s ambassador, Akbari, vowed the attack “will lead to our decisive response”, adding “the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate shows the reality of the Zionist entity which recognises no international laws and does all that is inhumane to achieve its goals”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called for a “serious response by the international community”.

– ‘Heinous attack’ –

Only the gate of the building was left standing after the attack, with a sign mentioning “the consular section of the embassy of Iran”, an AFP journalist said.

Window panes in buildings within a 500-metre (550 yard) radius had been shattered, and many parked cars were damaged by the blast.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad also denounced the attack after visiting the site, calling it a “heinous terrorist attack… killing a number of innocent people”, in a statement carried by SANA.

The Gaza war, which started with the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, has devastated the coastal territory and also seen Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah exchange near daily cross-border fire.

Israel has also struck targets in Syria, mostly army positions as well as those of Iran-backed combatants.

Hamas condemned “in the strongest terms” the attack which it called a “dangerous escalation.”

Moscow, a Damascus ally along with Tehran, blamed “the Israeli Air Force” for the “unacceptable attack against the Iranian consular mission in Syria.”

The Damascus strike came three days after the Observatory reported Israeli strikes that had killed 53 people in Syria, including 38 soldiers and seven members of Hezbollah.

It was the highest Syrian army toll in Israeli strikes since the Israel-Hamas war began, said the monitor.

“Syria and Lebanon have become one extended battleground from the Israeli perspective,” Riad Kahwaji, head of the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, told AFP after the Friday strikes.

The bloodiest ever Gaza war erupted with the Palestinian militants’ unprecedented October 7 attack which resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel’s retaliatory campaign, aimed at destroying Hamas, has killed at least 32,845 people, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza health ministry.

Arvind Kejriwal Sent To Jail After Probe Agency Claims He's “Uncooperative”

Arvind Kejriwal Sent To Jail After Probe Agency Claims He's “Uncooperative”

The ED said it may need Arvind Kejriwal’s custody again in the future.

New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will spend the next two weeks in jail in the liquor policy case after his Enforcement Directorate custody ends today. The probe agency did not seek custody of the AAP leader, after which a local court this morning sent him to jail till April 15.

The court has also allowed him to meet his wife Sunita Kejriwal and ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj before he is shifted to the Tihar Jail.

Mr Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 in the alleged liquor policy scam after he skipped nine central agency summons, and has been running his government from the ED lock-up since then.

In Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court, where Mr Kejriwal was produced this morning before the expiry of his probe agency custody, the ED said he had been “uncooperative” and was giving evasive answers. He did not reveal the passwords of his digital devices, the ED told the court.

The central agency, which is probing money laundering charges in the alleged liquor policy scam, also said it may need his custody again in the future.

Mr Kejriwal’s lawyer has demanded some medicines and a special diet for him inside the jail in view of his illness.

The Chief Minister has also moved the Delhi High Court against his arrest, arguing that his fundamental rights were violated by the probe agency. The court had issued a notice to the ED, seeking a reply by April 2. The hearing will resume on April 3.

Mr Kejriwal is the third AAP leader after his former deputy Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh to be arrested in the liquor policy case. He has dubbed his arrest a “political conspiracy”.

He had also addressed the courtroom during his last hearing and asserted no court had proven him guilty. “The CBI has filed 31,000 pages (of chargesheets) and ED filed 25,000 pages. Even if you read them together… the question remains… why have I been arrested?” he had said.

The excise policy was introduced to bring an overhaul to the liquor business in Delhi but was scrapped after Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena ordered a probe into the alleged irregularities in the policy.

The ED believes the policy provided a high profit margin and bribe money was allegedly used to fund the AAP’s election campaigns.

“Not Getting Bail Even From Supreme Court”: PM's Big Attack On Opposition

“Not Getting Bail Even From Supreme Court”: PM's Big Attack On Opposition

Meerut:

Lashing out at the opposition INDIA bloc, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the attacks on him will not stop the fight against corruption and action will be taken against those involved in graft irrespective of their status.

“When Modi is fighting the battle against corruption with full strength, these people have formed the INDI(A) alliance. They think they will intimidate Modi, but for me, my Bharat is my family and I am taking steps to protect it from the corrupt,” the Prime Minister said addressing his first rally in Uttar Pradesh after the announcement of the Lok Sabha election schedule.

PM Modi’s counter-offensive came as the stalwarts of the INDIA bloc held a rally at the Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi in support of AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and JMM leader Hemant Soren, arrested on graft charges, and accused the prime minister of adopting dictatorial policies.

The Prime Minister said some people are rattled because he is taking action against corruption.

“I am fighting a big battle to save my country from the corrupt. That is why they are behind bars today and not getting bail even from the Supreme Court,” PM Modi said.

“The election is a fight between two camps. On one side you have the NDA committed to eradicating corruption, on the other side is the INDI(A) Alliance focused on protecting corrupt leaders. You have to decide whether corruption should be removed or not,” he said at the rally in Meerut.

“Corrupt people should listen… no matter how many attacks you make on Modi, this is Modi, he is not going to stop. No matter how big the corrupt person is, action will definitely be taken. The one who has looted the country will have to give it back. This is Modi’s guarantee,” he said.

Raising the Katchatheevu island issue, PM Modi accused the Congress and the opposition alliance of trying to harm the country’s unity and sovereignty.

“Today, yet another anti-India conduct of Congress has been exposed. The island of Katchatheevu, which lies between India and Sri Lanka and is extremely important from the perspective of national security, was given away by Congress after independence.

“India is still paying for the misdoings of the Congress government,” he said.

The 2024 Lok Sabha election is not just for making a government but to make a ‘Viksit Bharat’, PM Modi said, adding his government was preparing the roadmap for the next five years.

PM Modi praised Meerut as the land of “revolution and revolutionaries” that gave leaders like Chaudhary Charan Singh to the nation.

“Our government has already started preparations for the third term. We are making a roadmap for the coming five years. Work is going on rapidly on what major decisions we have to take in the first 100 days.

“In the last 10 years, you have seen only a trailer of development, now we have to take the country much further,” he said.

The prime minister said he has lived in poverty and “that is why Modi understands very well the sorrow of every poor, the pain of every poor, the suffering of every poor”.

“So I made schemes to address every concern of the poor. We have not only empowered the poor, but we have also given them back their self-respect,” PM Modi said.

Rashtriya Lok Dal president Jayant Chaudhary, who recently joined the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, shared the dais with the prime minister at the rally.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini along with veteran actor Arun Govil of TV serial ‘Ramayan’ fame, who is the BJP candidate in the Meerut Lok Sabha seat, were present at the rally.
