During England’s first innings in Rajkot Test, India took a DRS against Ollie Pope when Mohammed Siraj, deployed on short-ball tactics, pitched a fuller one to hit the pad of the English batter. Umpire Joel Wilson was unmoved but he had to overturn his appeal with the replays confirming that the ball was hitting the leg stump. Pope’s entertaining knock thus ended at 39 off 55 balls. Commenting on the dismissal England pace great Stuart Broad wrote on X: “Looks high to me for 3 reds!”

“You used to nick it to slip and not think you were out mate,” replied his former teammate Graeme Swann on the comment.

India beat England by a whopping 434 runs in the third Test to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series in Rajkot on Sunday.

This was India’s biggest Test win in terms of runs, surpassing the 372-run victory over New Zealand in 2021.

Set an improbable victory target of 557, England collapsed to 122 all out in 39.4 overs on day four.

Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for India, taking five wickets for 41 runs in 12.4 overs.

It was easily England’s worst batting effort of the series with no batter able to cross the 20-run mark barring number 10 Mark Wood (33).

On the same pitch, India amassed 445 and 430 for four declared in their two innings respectively.

The massive win was set up by Yashasvi Jaiswal who remained unbeaten on 214 in India’s second innings. The other centurions of the game were Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja.

Sarfaraz Khan scored back-to-back fifties on his debut.

The fourth Test will be played in Ranchi from February 23.

IND vs ENG Live: Pitch report

It doesn’t look too different from yesterday. Still looks a belter. The cracks have opened up a little bit. Tinge of grass, amazing how that’s still stayed with the weather we’ve had. Enough for the bowlers on both sides of the wicket. We may see one or two staying down. The natural variations will increase. The abrasiveness has increased, there might be more variable bounce. The ball marks are a lot more prominent.

“Don't Worry About Me”: Putin Critic Navalny's Last Weeks In An Arctic Jail

“Don't Worry About Me”: Putin Critic Navalny's Last Weeks In An Arctic Jail

Alexei Navalny regularly ridiculed prison routines. (File)

Moscow:

Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition leader, spent his final weeks in a penal colony above the Arctic Circle.

His 19-year prison sentence was widely condemned by rights groups and in the West as punishment for daring to cross President Vladimir Putin.

Through messages passed through his lawyers, he posted regularly on social media in a characteristically optimistic and light-hearted tone.

Here is what Navalny’s final weeks looked like, in his own words:

‘Ho-ho-ho’

On December 26, Navalny posted his first message from his new Arctic prison colony, having disappeared for weeks after being moved from his former prison closer to Moscow.

The icy IK-3 prison colony in the Siberian region of Yamal-Nenets, some 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) from his native Moscow, would be where he spent his final few weeks.

“I am your new grandfather Frost,” Navalny said, in his usual tongue-in-cheek manner.

“I have a tulup, an ushanka and I will have valenki soon,” he said, referring to traditional furry Russian winter coats, hats and boots.

“I now live above the Arctic Circle … But I don’t say ‘ho-ho-ho, I say ‘oh-oh-oh’ when I look out the window, where first there is night, then evening, then night again.”

Navalny said he was tired from the 20-day journey from his previous prison in the central Vladimir region, close to Moscow.

“Don’t worry about me, everything is well. I am so happy that I finally got here.”

‘Thinking about Leonardo DiCaprio’

A few weeks later, after a spell in quarantine, Navalny shared more details about his conditions in the new Arctic prison.

“The idea that Putin was pleased (enough) that he had put me in a barracks in the Far North that they would stop throwing me in solitary confinement was … naive,” the 47-year-old said.

Prison authorities told him: “‘Convict Navalny refused to introduce himself in the correct way’. Seven days in solitary confinement.”

Navalny spent more than 300 days in solitary confinement — or a “punishment cell” as his colleagues called it, based on its name in Russian — during his three years in prison.

He was ordered there on 27 occasions, often for minor infringements of prison protocol.

Allowed out for a daily walk in the pitch black of at 6:30 a.m., Navalny said: “I promised myself I would go out in any weather.”

His cell was “11 steps from wall to wall”.

“It has never been colder than minus 32 (Celsius). Even in such a temperature you can walk more than half an hour — only if you have the time to grow back a nose, ears and fingers,” he said in a January 9 post.

“Today I was walking, freezing and thinking about Leonardo DiCaprio and his trick with a dead horse in The Revenant,” he said, referring to a scene in which his character crawls into an animal carcass to keep warm.

“I don’t think it would work here. A dead horse would freeze to death within 15 minutes.”

‘I’m Russian’

Navalny also regularly ridiculed prison routines.

On January 22, he said the prison wardens at IK-3 would wake everybody up at 5 a.m. to play the Russian national anthem.

“And right after that — the second most important song in the country: Shaman’s ‘Ya Russky,'” he said.

The song — which means “I’m Russian” — has become an unofficial anthem for President Vladimir Putin.

“Imagine the scene. Yamal-Nenets region. Polar night. In a penal colony of convicts, prisoner Navalny serving 19 years — who the Kremlin’s propaganda for years has scolded for taking part in Russian marches — is exercising to ‘Ya Russky'”.

‘Send me money’

In a court hearing on 15 February — a day before his death — Navalny was filmed joking with the judge over a stream of fines he had been issued.

“Your honour, I will send you my personal account number so that you, with your huge salary as a federal judge, can send me money,” he said, laughing.

“I am running out of cash, and thanks to your decisions, it will run out even faster. So send it!”

‘I love you’

Navalny’s last post, published on Valentine’s Day, was dedicated to his wife, Yulia.

“Baby, you and I have everything, just like in the song: cities, airfield lights, blue snowstorms and thousands of kilometres between us,” he said, quoting a popular Soviet-era tune.

“But I feel that you are near me every second, and I love you more and more.”

2 Killed, 25 Injured In Protest Over Manipur “Selfie” Cop's Sacking

The police said there is tension in Manipur’s Churachandpur district after fresh protests broke out

Imphal:

At least two died and 25 others were injured in a clash with the security forces after hundreds of people came out in Manipur’s Kuki-Zo tribes-dominated Churachandpur district today to protest against the suspension of a head constable after a selfie of him with “armed miscreants” went viral.

The police said there is tension in the district. Protesters were seen surrounding the office of the Superintendent of Police, demanding the reinstatement of the head constable, Siamlalpaul, who took the selfie in a bunker of “armed miscreants” and “village defence volunteers” atop a hill.

The protesters set a bus and other structures outside the district police chief’s office on fire. Security forces opened fire as the angry mob turned violent.

Mobile internet has been suspended in the district in view of the violence.

“A departmental inquiry is being contemplated against Siamlalpaul of Churachandpur district police, as a clip has gone viral on social media showing him making a video with armed men on February 14,” the suspension order by the Churachandpur Superintendent of Police Shivanand Surve said.

Manipur has been seeing gunfights between rival armed groups – who call themselves “village defence volunteers” – amid the ethnic tensions between the hill-majority Kuki-Zo tribes and the valley-majority Meiteis.

Things are under watch,” the Manipur Police said in the post on X.

The protesters alleged the head constable has been suspended unfairly, and should be reinstated. Churachandpur, a district dominated by the Kuki-Zo tribes, was one of the areas most affected by the ethnic clashes that began in May 2023.

The Kuki-Zo tribes have repeatedly alleged the involvement of the state police in attacking their villages. The police have refuted these allegations at every turn, and instead pointed at the alleged involvement of Kuki-Zo insurgents in bolstering “village defence volunteers”.

The Kuki-Zo civil society group Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) in a statement late on Thursday said the Churachandpur police chief is “entirely responsible for tonight’s incident in the district…”

The ITLF alleged videos have been doing the rounds on social media in the past few months showing Manipur Police personnel fighting alongside armed groups and attacking Kuki-Zo areas. “But no action has been taken against them,” the ITLF said.

Civil Society Group Ex-Leader Seeks FIR Against Manipur Police Officer

The former leader of a civil society group has written to the Manipur Police to file a case against a senior officer for allegedly threatening to kill him.

H Thangtinlen Daniel Mate, the former chief of the Tengnoupal unit Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), in the letter alleged that the Senior Superintendent of Police (Combat) Colonel Nectar Sanjenbam (retired) dialled him at night and threatened to kill him.

“I received a call from Mr Nectar’s phone number… and because it was late at night I did not receive the call. Then after a few minutes I received a life-threatening text message… The text said that he knows me and that he was going to kill me,” Mr Mate said in the letter to the officer in charge of Tengnoupal police station on Thursday.

“… I have not done anything against this person or any person to deserve such a life-threatening warning,” he said.

No FIR has been filed yet.

Colonel Nectar had played a key role in India’s surgical strikes in Myanmar in 2015. The Manipur government appointed him Senior Superintendent of Police (Combat) in August 2023 for a five-year tenure. The retired army officer has served in the 21 Para (Special Forces). He was awarded the Kirti Chakra – the second-highest peacetime gallantry award — and Shaurya Chakra, the third highest.

The ethnic violence in Manipur between the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis over disagreements on land, resources, political representation, and affirmative action policies has dragged on for nine months now. Over 180 have died and 50,000 have been internally displaced.

Mamata Banerjee Responds To Big Row: “There's RSS Base In Sandeshkhali”

Mamata Banerjee Responds To Big Row: “There's RSS Base In Sandeshkhali”

Amid a political storm over the alleged sexual harassment of women in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said she has “never allowed injustice” and accused the BJP of inciting trouble on the island in North 24 Parganas district.

“I have never allowed injustice in my life. I sent (representatives of) the state women’s commission (to Sandeshkhali) immediately and 17 people have been arrested,” Ms Banerjee said in the Assembly, shortly after main Opposition BJP staged a walkout over the raging issue.

Blaming the BJP for the unrest on the island, the Trinamool Congress chief said the Centre had targeted local Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan through the Enforcement Directorate. “First, they entered the area and targeted Sheikh Shahjahan though ED and then they started the trouble there by getting people in. There is an RSS base in Sandeshkhali. There were riots earlier too,” she said.

Shahjahan, a local strongman, has been on the run for a month now after ED officials who visited the island to raid his home came under a mob attack.

Ms Banerjee said a police team is meeting women in Sandeshkhali. “A police team of women are going door to door to see if there are any complaints. If they file a report, we will look into it,” she said.

Sandeshkhali has hit headlines after a section of women there accused Sheikh Shahjahan’s aides of sexual harassment. The BJP has targeted the Trinamool Congress government in the state over the allegations. The ruling party has trashed the charges and said the BJP is trying to create unrest in the area. The island, meanwhile, has an uneasy calm.

NDTV visited Sandeshkhali yesterday and spoke to several women. The conversations revealed that while the BJP’s allegations of rape and sexual violence may not be true, many women were called to the Trinamool office at odd hours and threatened if they refused. Some women also said that their husbands were being tortured.

One woman, who participated in the protests earlier, told NDTV, “These incidents must have taken place, otherwise why will the women say these things? You must enquire for yourself. Why else will women come out on the streets and speak out? Are they lying? There must be truth in these statements. We are living in fear. We don’t come out of our homes because of fear,” she added.

Another woman said, “They (Shahjahan’s aides) would call women for meetings or rallies but there was no fixed time. It could be day or night. We would have to go whenever they called us and if we didn’t, they would threaten us.”

The women named Shahjahan’s aides, Shibu Hazra and Uttam Sardar. While Sardar has been arrested, Hazra is on the run.

One of the women alleged that the Trinamool leaders would torture them. “They targeted women by picking up their husbands and beating them up with a stick in the party office. If we refused to go to the party office, they would pick up the men and thrash them so we would be forced to go,” she said.

The West Bengal Police have said a section of media is spreading “wilful misinformation” to mislead people about the events in Sandeshkhali.”

“It is reiterated that no allegations of sexual torture of women have so far been received during the enquiries since conducted by the State Women’s Commission, an all-women 10-member fact-finding team led by DIG CID, and also the district police,” police have said.
