“Don't Worry About Me”: Putin Critic Navalny's Last Weeks In An Arctic Jail

Moscow:

Alexei Navalny, Russia’s most prominent opposition leader, spent his final weeks in a penal colony above the Arctic Circle.

His 19-year prison sentence was widely condemned by rights groups and in the West as punishment for daring to cross President Vladimir Putin.

Through messages passed through his lawyers, he posted regularly on social media in a characteristically optimistic and light-hearted tone.

Here is what Navalny’s final weeks looked like, in his own words:

‘Ho-ho-ho’

On December 26, Navalny posted his first message from his new Arctic prison colony, having disappeared for weeks after being moved from his former prison closer to Moscow.

The icy IK-3 prison colony in the Siberian region of Yamal-Nenets, some 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) from his native Moscow, would be where he spent his final few weeks.

“I am your new grandfather Frost,” Navalny said, in his usual tongue-in-cheek manner.

“I have a tulup, an ushanka and I will have valenki soon,” he said, referring to traditional furry Russian winter coats, hats and boots.

“I now live above the Arctic Circle … But I don’t say ‘ho-ho-ho, I say ‘oh-oh-oh’ when I look out the window, where first there is night, then evening, then night again.”

Navalny said he was tired from the 20-day journey from his previous prison in the central Vladimir region, close to Moscow.

“Don’t worry about me, everything is well. I am so happy that I finally got here.”

‘Thinking about Leonardo DiCaprio’

A few weeks later, after a spell in quarantine, Navalny shared more details about his conditions in the new Arctic prison.

“The idea that Putin was pleased (enough) that he had put me in a barracks in the Far North that they would stop throwing me in solitary confinement was … naive,” the 47-year-old said.

Prison authorities told him: “‘Convict Navalny refused to introduce himself in the correct way’. Seven days in solitary confinement.”

Navalny spent more than 300 days in solitary confinement — or a “punishment cell” as his colleagues called it, based on its name in Russian — during his three years in prison.

He was ordered there on 27 occasions, often for minor infringements of prison protocol.

Allowed out for a daily walk in the pitch black of at 6:30 a.m., Navalny said: “I promised myself I would go out in any weather.”

His cell was “11 steps from wall to wall”.

“It has never been colder than minus 32 (Celsius). Even in such a temperature you can walk more than half an hour — only if you have the time to grow back a nose, ears and fingers,” he said in a January 9 post.

“Today I was walking, freezing and thinking about Leonardo DiCaprio and his trick with a dead horse in The Revenant,” he said, referring to a scene in which his character crawls into an animal carcass to keep warm.

“I don’t think it would work here. A dead horse would freeze to death within 15 minutes.”

‘I’m Russian’

Navalny also regularly ridiculed prison routines.

On January 22, he said the prison wardens at IK-3 would wake everybody up at 5 a.m. to play the Russian national anthem.

“And right after that — the second most important song in the country: Shaman’s ‘Ya Russky,'” he said.

The song — which means “I’m Russian” — has become an unofficial anthem for President Vladimir Putin.

“Imagine the scene. Yamal-Nenets region. Polar night. In a penal colony of convicts, prisoner Navalny serving 19 years — who the Kremlin’s propaganda for years has scolded for taking part in Russian marches — is exercising to ‘Ya Russky'”.

‘Send me money’

In a court hearing on 15 February — a day before his death — Navalny was filmed joking with the judge over a stream of fines he had been issued.

“Your honour, I will send you my personal account number so that you, with your huge salary as a federal judge, can send me money,” he said, laughing.

“I am running out of cash, and thanks to your decisions, it will run out even faster. So send it!”

‘I love you’

Navalny’s last post, published on Valentine’s Day, was dedicated to his wife, Yulia.

“Baby, you and I have everything, just like in the song: cities, airfield lights, blue snowstorms and thousands of kilometres between us,” he said, quoting a popular Soviet-era tune.

“But I feel that you are near me every second, and I love you more and more.”

2 Killed, 25 Injured In Protest Over Manipur “Selfie” Cop's Sacking

2 Killed, 25 Injured In Protest Over Manipur “Selfie” Cop's Sacking

The police said there is tension in Manipur’s Churachandpur district after fresh protests broke out

Imphal:

At least two died and 25 others were injured in a clash with the security forces after hundreds of people came out in Manipur’s Kuki-Zo tribes-dominated Churachandpur district today to protest against the suspension of a head constable after a selfie of him with “armed miscreants” went viral.

The police said there is tension in the district. Protesters were seen surrounding the office of the Superintendent of Police, demanding the reinstatement of the head constable, Siamlalpaul, who took the selfie in a bunker of “armed miscreants” and “village defence volunteers” atop a hill.

The protesters set a bus and other structures outside the district police chief’s office on fire. Security forces opened fire as the angry mob turned violent.

Mobile internet has been suspended in the district in view of the violence.

“A departmental inquiry is being contemplated against Siamlalpaul of Churachandpur district police, as a clip has gone viral on social media showing him making a video with armed men on February 14,” the suspension order by the Churachandpur Superintendent of Police Shivanand Surve said.

Manipur has been seeing gunfights between rival armed groups – who call themselves “village defence volunteers” – amid the ethnic tensions between the hill-majority Kuki-Zo tribes and the valley-majority Meiteis.

The police posted on the microblogging platform X that the Rapid Action Force (RAF) has fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters in Churachandpur, 65 km from the state capital Imphal. Several protesters were injured.

“A mob numbering approximately 300-400 attempted to storm the office of SP (Superintendent of Police) CCP (Churachandpur) today, pelting stones, etc. The SF (security forces)including RAF are responding appropriately by firing tear gas shells to control the situation. Things are under watch,” the Manipur Police said in the post on X.

The protesters alleged the head constable has been suspended unfairly, and should be reinstated. Churachandpur, a district dominated by the Kuki-Zo tribes, was one of the areas most affected by the ethnic clashes that began in May 2023.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The Kuki-Zo tribes have repeatedly alleged the involvement of the state police in attacking their villages. The police have refuted these allegations at every turn, and instead pointed at the alleged involvement of Kuki-Zo insurgents in bolstering “village defence volunteers”.

The Kuki-Zo civil society group Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) in a statement late on Thursday said the Churachandpur police chief is “entirely responsible for tonight’s incident in the district…”

The ITLF alleged videos have been doing the rounds on social media in the past few months showing Manipur Police personnel fighting alongside armed groups and attacking Kuki-Zo areas. “But no action has been taken against them,” the ITLF said.

Civil Society Group Ex-Leader Seeks FIR Against Manipur Police Officer

The former leader of a civil society group has written to the Manipur Police to file a case against a senior officer for allegedly threatening to kill him.

H Thangtinlen Daniel Mate, the former chief of the Tengnoupal unit Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), in the letter alleged that the Senior Superintendent of Police (Combat) Colonel Nectar Sanjenbam (retired) dialled him at night and threatened to kill him.

“I received a call from Mr Nectar’s phone number… and because it was late at night I did not receive the call. Then after a few minutes I received a life-threatening text message… The text said that he knows me and that he was going to kill me,” Mr Mate said in the letter to the officer in charge of Tengnoupal police station on Thursday.

“… I have not done anything against this person or any person to deserve such a life-threatening warning,” he said.

No FIR has been filed yet.

Colonel Nectar had played a key role in India’s surgical strikes in Myanmar in 2015. The Manipur government appointed him Senior Superintendent of Police (Combat) in August 2023 for a five-year tenure. The retired army officer has served in the 21 Para (Special Forces). He was awarded the Kirti Chakra – the second-highest peacetime gallantry award — and Shaurya Chakra, the third highest.

The ethnic violence in Manipur between the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis over disagreements on land, resources, political representation, and affirmative action policies has dragged on for nine months now. Over 180 have died and 50,000 have been internally displaced.

Mamata Banerjee Responds To Big Row: “There's RSS Base In Sandeshkhali”

Mamata Banerjee Responds To Big Row: “There's RSS Base In Sandeshkhali”

Amid a political storm over the alleged sexual harassment of women in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said she has “never allowed injustice” and accused the BJP of inciting trouble on the island in North 24 Parganas district.

“I have never allowed injustice in my life. I sent (representatives of) the state women’s commission (to Sandeshkhali) immediately and 17 people have been arrested,” Ms Banerjee said in the Assembly, shortly after main Opposition BJP staged a walkout over the raging issue.

Blaming the BJP for the unrest on the island, the Trinamool Congress chief said the Centre had targeted local Trinamool leader Sheikh Shahjahan through the Enforcement Directorate. “First, they entered the area and targeted Sheikh Shahjahan though ED and then they started the trouble there by getting people in. There is an RSS base in Sandeshkhali. There were riots earlier too,” she said.

Shahjahan, a local strongman, has been on the run for a month now after ED officials who visited the island to raid his home came under a mob attack.

Ms Banerjee said a police team is meeting women in Sandeshkhali. “A police team of women are going door to door to see if there are any complaints. If they file a report, we will look into it,” she said.

Sandeshkhali has hit headlines after a section of women there accused Sheikh Shahjahan’s aides of sexual harassment. The BJP has targeted the Trinamool Congress government in the state over the allegations. The ruling party has trashed the charges and said the BJP is trying to create unrest in the area. The island, meanwhile, has an uneasy calm.

NDTV visited Sandeshkhali yesterday and spoke to several women. The conversations revealed that while the BJP’s allegations of rape and sexual violence may not be true, many women were called to the Trinamool office at odd hours and threatened if they refused. Some women also said that their husbands were being tortured.

One woman, who participated in the protests earlier, told NDTV, “These incidents must have taken place, otherwise why will the women say these things? You must enquire for yourself. Why else will women come out on the streets and speak out? Are they lying? There must be truth in these statements. We are living in fear. We don’t come out of our homes because of fear,” she added.

Another woman said, “They (Shahjahan’s aides) would call women for meetings or rallies but there was no fixed time. It could be day or night. We would have to go whenever they called us and if we didn’t, they would threaten us.”

The women named Shahjahan’s aides, Shibu Hazra and Uttam Sardar. While Sardar has been arrested, Hazra is on the run.

One of the women alleged that the Trinamool leaders would torture them. “They targeted women by picking up their husbands and beating them up with a stick in the party office. If we refused to go to the party office, they would pick up the men and thrash them so we would be forced to go,” she said.

The West Bengal Police have said a section of media is spreading “wilful misinformation” to mislead people about the events in Sandeshkhali.”

“It is reiterated that no allegations of sexual torture of women have so far been received during the enquiries since conducted by the State Women’s Commission, an all-women 10-member fact-finding team led by DIG CID, and also the district police,” police have said.

“Joy In Ayodhya Amplified In Abu Dhabi”: PM Modi Inaugurates Temple In UAE

“Joy In Ayodhya Amplified In Abu Dhabi”: PM Modi Inaugurates Temple In UAE

PM Narendra Modi conducted rituals for the temple’s inauguration.

Marking a significant milestone for the Indian community in the Middle East, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated Abu Dhabi’s first Hindu temple, which is also the largest in the region.

Spread over 27 acres and built at a cost of over Rs 700 crore, the BAPS Hindu temple is also seen as a sign of the deepening relationship between India and the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking after inaugurating the temple PM Modi said in Hindi, “A golden chapter in human history has been written in UAE today. A grand and holy temple has been inaugurated in Abu Dhabi today. Years of hard work have gone into this temple and a long-cherished dream has come true. Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s blessings are also with this temple.”

Referring to the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22 the PM said, amid cheers, “A centuries-old dream was fulfilled. All of India and every Indian is still cherishing that feeling. My friend Brahmavihari Swamy was saying, ‘Modi ji s the biggest priest’. I don’t know if I have the qualifications of a temple priest but I am proud to be a priest of Maa Bharti (Mother India).”

Stating that every moment of his life and every molecule in his body is dedicated to Ma Bharti, the Prime Minister said, “The joy we felt in Ayodhya has been amplified in Abu Dhabi today. It is my honour that I witnessed the consecration of the temple in Ayodhya last month and this temple in Abu Dhabi today.”

‘Even Thank You Not Enough’

Continuing his praise for his “brother”, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whom he had hailed as a “friend of the Indian community” at the ‘Ahlan Modi’ event on Tuesday, the PM said he had played the biggest role in fulfilling the dream of constructing a grand temple in Abu Dhabi.

“He has won the hearts of 140 crore Indians. It is my privilege that I have been a part of this temple from the time it was conceptualised to its inauguration. This is why I know that even ‘thank you’ is too small a phrase for his generosity and contribution. I want the world to see the depth of the India-UAE relationship,” PM Modi said.

Recalling that he had spoken to Sheikh Al Nahyan about the temple when they had met in 2015, the PM said the UAE president had said yes to the proposal on the spot and made land available in a short time.

“When I came to the UAE again in 2018, I met Sheikh Al Nahyan and showed him the two models of the temple that had been prepared – one that was based on Vedic architecture and another that was a simple model without Hindu religious symbols – his thought was clear: he told me the temple in Abu Dhabi should be built with splendour and glory. He wanted the temple to not only be built but also look like a temple,” the Prime Minister said and then asked the audience to give the UAE President a standing ovation.

Construction Began In 2019

Sheikh Al Nahyan donated 13.5 acres of land for the construction of the temple in 2015 and PM Modi had laid the foundation three years later. Construction began in 2019 after an additional 13.5 acres of land was donated earlier that year.

Built by the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), the temple is located in Abu Mreikhah, near Al Rahba. The consecration ceremony of the idols began at the temple on Wednesday morning.

PM Modi also participated in a ‘global aarti (prayer)’, which was performed simultaneously at over 1,200 temples built by BAPS. Before inaugurating the temple, he offered water in the virtual Ganga and Yamuna rivers at the temple and met people from different religions who played a role in its construction.

Spires Represent Emirates

Temple authorities said seven shikhars (spires) have been built at the temple representing the seven emirates that form the UAE.

“The seven spires have idols of deities, including Lord Ram, Lord Shiv, Lord Jagannath, Lord Krishna, Lord Swaminarayan (considered a reincarnation of Lord Krishna), Tirupati Balaji and Lord Ayappa. The seven shikhars represent the seven emirates of UAE,” Swami Brahmaviharidas, head of international relations for BAPS, told PTI.

“The seven spires also pay homage to seven important deities, underscoring the interconnectedness of cultures and religions. Normally, our temples are either one spire, three, or five but the seven spires express our gratitude to the unity of the seven emirates. But at the same time, the seven spires enshrine seven important deities… The spirals aim to promote unity and harmony in the multicultural landscape,” he said.

PM Modi’s visit to the UAE is his seventh since 2015 and his third in eight months. After the temple inauguration, PM Modi will leave for Doha and hold a bilateral meeting with the Qatari leadership. PM Modi’s visit to the country comes on the heels of Qatar releasing eight navy veterans from prison, which was seen as a huge diplomatic victory for India.

“If Navy Veterans Can Be Brought Back…” Anurag Thakur On Talks With Farmers

“If Navy Veterans Can Be Brought Back…” Anurag Thakur On Talks With Farmers

Mr Thakur urged the farmers to continue their dialogue with the government.

New Delhi:

Union Minister Anurag Thakur has urged protesting farmers to hold talks with the government, stating that even the Indian Navy veterans were brought back from Qatar through the power of dialogue.

Speaking to NDTV on Tuesday, when protesting farmers began their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, Mr Thakur said talks are taking time because the farmers are making new demands, and they should not indulge in violence and arson.

Referring to the eight former Navy personnel who were released by the Qatar government, seven of whom reached India on Monday, Mr Thakur asserted, “When Indian Navy veterans can be saved from the death penalty and brought back safely from Qatar, if 27,000 Indians can be rescued during the Ukraine war under Operation Ganga, if crores of Indians can be brought back during Covid… all of this has been achieved through dialogue. My request to our farmer brothers is to come and continue our dialogue.”

“Our Union ministers sat till late last night to hear the farmers’ concerns but their representatives walked away. Even then we said discussions should continue. The discussions are taking longer because new demands are being put forward – they don’t want us to be part of the World Trade Organisation, they want us to scrap free trade agreements,” the minister, who holds the Information and Broadcasting and Sports portfolios, said in Hindi.

Some of the other new demands, he said, were that stubble burning should not be seen through the prism of pollution and that farmers should be kept out of the purview of the Electricity (Amendment) bill.

“We told them we will form a committee or we can also discuss with the agriculture minister. We will also have to hold discussions with states and other stakeholders. This is why I am telling them to continue the dialogue. When we have met most of your (farmers’) demands, a solution can be found on the rest through discussions,” he said.

Barbed Wires, Nails

Asked about the clashes during the protests and why barbed wires were put up and nails were laid on some of the state borders, the minister said law enforcement is a state subject. He urged the protestors not to indulge in violence as it causes a “loss to the nation”, and also pointed out that thousands of common people were having to endure long traffic jams.

Claiming that the Narendra Modi government has purchased more crops than the previous UPA government and the share of agriculture in the Budget has also gone up, Mr Thakur alleged that the Congress – whose leader Rahul Gandhi promised a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP) on Tuesday if it is voted back to power – has never respected farmers. A law on MSP is one of the key demands of the protesting farmers.

“Rahul Gandhi ji, you are giving guarantees today. The Congress was in power for 60 years. The UPA government was in office between 2004 and 2014. You didn’t even implement the recommendation of the Swaminathan Commission… Neither will Rahul Gandhi come to power, nor will he do anything for farmers,” he said.

To a question on the opposition pointing out that the farmers were protesting at a time when the Bharat Ratna had been announced for farmer leader and former PM Chaudhary Charan Singh and the father of the Green Revolution, MS Swaminathan, Mr Thakur reiterated his call for dialogue and said the government has worked for the welfare of farmers and will continue to do so.

Video: Bengaluru Man Bites Cop's Finger After Being Caught Without Helmet

Video: Bengaluru Man Bites Cop's Finger After Being Caught Without Helmet

Bengaluru man bit the finger of the traffic constable to retrieve the keys.

A video of a man yelling and biting a traffic police personnel in Bengaluru – which is in wide circulation now – has triggered huge outrage.

Sayyad Safi was stopped by the traffic police for violating rules after he was caught driving the scooter without a helmet near Wilson Garden 10th Cross.

While a traffic constable took away his scooter keys, Head Constable Siddarameshwara Kaujalagi tried to film the incident to record the violation.

The video shows the 28-year-old man confronting both the traffic constables. At one point, he bit the finger of the traffic constable to retrieve the keys.

He can be heard saying that he forgot to wear the helmet as he was heading to a hospital and that he doesn’t care if his video goes viral.

Sayyad Safi then grabbed the head constable’s phone, asked him why his video was being recorded, and attempted to flee.

He was immediately caught and arrested, officials said.

“The suspect is believed to have abused the traffic constable at Wilson Garden 10th Cross, bit his finger and hurt him,” the police said.

A case has been registered against him for abusing and physically hurting a police personnel on duty, criminal intimidation and breach of peace, they said.
