Supreme Court's Special Sitting Today Over Judge vs Judge In Calcutta High Court

The Supreme Court had earlier pulled up Justice Abhijeet Gangopadhyay

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court will convene for a special hearing today after it took suo motu cognisance of Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s accusation against a colleague.

Five senior judges of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, will hear the case today at 10:30 am.

In an unprecedented instance, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay accused his colleague, Justice Soumen Sen who presided over a division bench that stayed a single-judge order for a CBI probe into medical admission irregularities, of working for a political party.

This came after Justice Sen stayed an order passed by Justice Gangopadhyay, who had ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, into allegations of fake caste certificates being issued in Bengal.

However, after his order was stayed by Justice Sen’s division bench, Justice Gangopadhyay took up the matter again and ordered the CBI to take up the investigation.

In his later order, Justice Gangopadhyay not only ignored the Division Bench’s order but also asked for a relook by the Supreme Court into the orders passed by Justice Sen whom he accused of working for a political party.

“Justice Sen is clearly working for some political party in this state. Therefore, if the Honorable Supreme Court thinks so, then there is a need to re-look at the orders passed in cases related to the state. What Justice Sen has done today is to further his personal interest to save some political party in power in this state. Therefore, his actions clearly amount to misconduct,” Justice Gangopadhyay said.

Justice Gangopadhyay also questioned why Justice Sen remained a Calcutta High Court judge despite a Supreme Court Collegium recommending his transfer in 2021.

In his order, Justice Gangopadhyay revealed a purported private chat between judges. He alleged that Justice Sen called Justice Amrita Sinha to his chambers on the last day before the recent court vacation and told her that Abhishek Banerjee has a political future and that he shouldn’t be disturbed.

Justice Sinha reported the matter to the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, who has reported the matter to the Chief Justice of India, Justice Gangopadhyay claimed.

Justice Abhijeet Gangopadhyay has been pulled up earlier by the Supreme Court for speaking to the press on cases he was hearing.

He has often made statements that have been interpreted as political. Most of these statements have been perceived to be against the ruling Trinamool Congress in the state. The TMC demanded he should step down from the judiciary to join politics instead.

Inside Story Of Nitish Kumar's Stunning U-Turn-Again – Just Before Polls

Inside Story Of Nitish Kumar's Stunning U-Turn-Again – Just Before Polls

Nitish Kumar felt that Rahul Gandhi humiliated him in the meeting by citing reservations over his name.

Patna:

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, after parting ways with the  BJP in 2022, took on the initiative of coralling all opposition forces to jointly take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling party in the national election. He hosted the first meeting of opposition parties in Patna, and it was widely believed that he would eventually be the coalition’s Convenor.

So how and why did Nitish Kumar become so disillusioned that he reached out to PM Modi, the man he wanted to defeat?

According to leaders close to the 72-year-old, the January 13 meeting of the INDIA alliance was the turning point.

In that meeting, Nitish Kumar’s name was proposed as Convenor by CPM Leader Sitaram Yechury and endorsed by almost all leaders, including Lalu Yadav and Sharad Pawar. However, Rahul Gandhi interjected and said a decision on this would have to wait as Trinamool Congress leader and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had reservations over Nitish Kumar for the role. Tejashwi Yadav, Nitish Kumar’s deputy (now soon-to-be ex), pointed out that Mamata Banerjee had skipped the meeting and that the decision should not be subject to her approval as a majority were in favour of Nitish Kumar. Significantly, though not surprisingly, neither Sonia Gandhi nor Mallikarjun Kharge sought to overrule Rahul Gandhi. Nitish Kumar, say sources close to him, felt then that he was “never going to achieve his objective of overthrowing Modi”.  And he decided, “if you can’t beat him, join him”, the leaders said.

Nitish Kumar felt that Rahul Gandhi, instead of trying to persuade Mamata Banerjee and bring her around, humiliated him in the meeting by citing reservations over his name.

Nitish Kumar’s supporters believe that as long as Rahul Gandhi is taking all the important calls, the opposition cannot manage full unity or put up a respectable fight against the BJP.

Reports that Nitish Kumar would not join Rahul Gandhi’s yatra in Bihar were a dead giveaway that the opposition alliance is in trouble.

The INDIA bloc is unraveling furiously with its key mover making a last-minute one-eighty and deciding to partner the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Over the last two days, two other opposition MVPs  — Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal — have all but ended it with the INDIA bloc, ruling out any alliance with the Congress and declaring solo fights in Bengal and Punjab.

Bharat Ratna To Karpoori Thakur As Impetus For Nitish Kumar's U-Turn?

Bharat Ratna To Karpoori Thakur As Impetus For Nitish Kumar's U-Turn?

New Delhi:

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will exit the state’s ruling Mahagathbandhan and, by extension the now-stuttering Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc, and re-ally with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the April/May Lok Sabha election, sources told NDTV Thursday.

News of a fifth U-turn by the Janata Dal (United) boss – who has jumped between the BJP, Congress, and/or Lalu Yadav‘s Rashtriya Janata Dal since 2013 – has triggered speculation over what led to the latest jump. At (or near) the top of the list of probable causes is the BJP’s decision to award former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur a posthumous Bharat Ratna – India’s highest civilian award.

Mr Thakur was an iconic socialist leader who was Chief Minister twice in the 1970s, and is credited with implementing the state’s contentious alcohol prohibition policy. Still remembered today as ‘jan nayak‘, or ‘leader of the people’, Karpoori Thakur’s legacy remains a valuable asset for political parties today.

He was also Nitish Kumar (and Lalu Yadav’s) mentor, and both had strongly advocated the award.

After the award was confirmed – Mr Modi did so on X and hailed Mr Thakur as “a champion for the marginalised and a stalwart of equality and empowerment” – Nitish Kumar thanked the Prime Minister.

He also took a potshot at the Congress; he said he had petitioned every central government since 2007 (when the Congress was in power) and it was only the Modi government that responded.

However, he also took a dig at Mr Modi, declaring he expected him to “claim full credit”. “I was told by Ram Nath Thakur (Karpoori Thakur’s son… the PM called him up… PM has not called me so far…”

The BJP’s decision to honour Karpoori Thakur has been seen as a strategic move.

For one thing, over 60 per cent of Bihar’s 13.1 crore population belong to backward or extremely backward communities, among whom Mr Thakur is still revered. Awarding his estate a Bharat Ratna will only help the BJP gain traction with this massive vote bank in a state that has 40 Lok Sabha seats.

In addition, a Bharat Ratna for the former Chief Minister may have put additional pressure on Nitish Kumar to make a choice – stay with the INDIA bloc (within which the JDU leader was already unsettled, claiming disrespect after being passed over as a possible Prime Minister candidate) or do a ghar wapsi.

For the BJP, having Nitish will mean a wider appeal in the Lok Sabha election. In 2019 the JDU won 16 seats, the BJP 17 and the Lok Janshakti Party six, meaning the “Modi wave” swept the state.

The BJP will want a similarly emphatic win this year to hit its target of 400 Lok Sabha seats.

A tie-up with Nitish Kumar does have its pitfalls, though, chief among which is his tendency to go back-and-forth between allies. His prime ministerial ambition is also an open secret.

That will absolutely not be fulfilled at this time, with Mr Modi all but certain to win a third term, but there may be other incentives on offer for the Bihar leader, including a second stint at being a Union Minister.

Boxing Great Mary Kom Announces Retirement, Cites “Age Limit” | Boxing News

Boxing Great Mary Kom Announces Retirement, Cites “Age Limit” | Boxing News

Six-time World Champion and 2012 Olympic medallist Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom on Wednesday announced her retirement from boxing. Mary Kom hung her boxing gloves as the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) rules allow male and female boxers to fight in elite-level competition only till the age of 40. During an event, Mary, 41, admitted that she still has the hunger to compete at the elite level, but she has to bring curtains down on her career because of the age limit.

“I have the hunger still but unfortunately because of the age limit it is over I cannot compete in any competition. I want to play more but I am being forced to quit (due to the age limit). I have to retire. I have achieved everything in my life,” Mary said during an event.

Mary is the first female boxer in boxing history to have captured six world titles. The five-time Asian champion was the first female boxer from India to take home a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games.

The experienced pugilist won a bronze medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games leaving any record or title untouched from her reach. She introduced herself to the world at the age of 18 in the inaugural world meet in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

With her near-flawless boxing style, she impressed everyone and made it to the final of the 48kg category. She fell short in the final but left a mark of the success that she was going to achieve in the future.

In the coming years, she went on to become the first Indian to win a gold medal at the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. She went on to clinch the World Championships titles in 2005, 2006, 2008 and the 2010 editions. After winning the 2008 title, Mary went on a break after giving birth to her twins.

After winning the 2012 Olympic medal, Mary once again went on a break after giving birth to her third child. She marked her return but sealed her place at the summit in the 2018 World Championships which was held in Delhi.

She dominated with a 5-0 win over Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota for her sixth world title. A year later, she went on to clinch her eighth world medal, the most by any male or female boxer.

Rohan Bopanna Secures Historic World No. 1 Spot, Progresses To Australian Open Men's Doubles Semis | Tennis News

Rohan Bopanna Secures Historic World No. 1 Spot, Progresses To Australian Open Men's Doubles Semis | Tennis News

India star Rohan Bopanna made Gran Slam history as he progressed to the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2024 men’s doubles event. Bopanna and his partner Matthew Ebden reached the semi-finals with a straight-sets win against the Argentine pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni on Wednesday. Courtesy of the quarter-final win in the Australian Open, Bopanna will become the No. 1 men’s doubles player in the world, at the age of 43. When the rankings are updated, he will become the oldest player in the sport’s history to clinch the numero uno spot.

The feat comes less than a year after Bopanna became the oldest man to qualify for a grand slam final in the Open era, when he and his partner Ebden lost the US Open 2023 final. Bopanna had made his debut more than 20 years ago.

Bopanna entered the Australian Open with a career-high ranking of No. 3. Having progressed to the semi-finals of the year’s first Gran Slam, the veteran Indian is assured of becoming the new No. 1 when the rankings will be updated next week. His men’s doubles partner Mathew Ebden, is assured of the No. 2 spot spot in men’s doubles rankings.

It was for the first time in 17 attempts that Bopanna managed to enter the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Earlier, Bopanna and Ebden sealed a spot in the men’s doubles quarterfinals of the Australian Open with a victory over Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic in a tight two-set match 7-6 (8), 7-6 (4) in Melbourne Park.

Koolhof-Mektic took the early initiative and claimed the lead, breaking the 43-year-old Bopanna’s serve as early as the second game of the opening set. To offset the lead, the Indo-Australian duo counterattacked in the seventh game, breaking Mektic.

Bopanna-Ebden’s expertise helped them win 10-8 in the tiebreaker after the set eventually went to it.

The second group followed a similar pattern as well. In the sixth game, Koolhof-Mektic secured the first break point by breaking Bopanna once more. The score was tied at 6-6 when Bopanna and Ebden broke Mektic in the eighth inning.

In an hour and forty-three minutes, Bopanna-Ebden emerged victorious in a tie-break set and secured their place in the quarterfinal.

Ram Lalla Idol That Lost Out. Rajasthan Sculptor's White Marble Version

Ram Lalla Idol That Lost Out. Rajasthan Sculptor's White Marble Version

The white idol of Ram Lalla is currently with the temple trust

Ayodhya:

While the black stone idol of Ram Lalla carved by Mysuru sculptor Arun Yogiraj has made it to the sanctum sanctorum of the grand temple at Ayodhya, two other idols under consideration will now be placed in other parts of the temple. One of them is a white marble idol carved by Rajasthan’s Satyanarayan Pandey. NDTV has accessed a photograph of this idol, which could not make it to the temple’s ‘garbha griha’ but will be placed elsewhere in the Ram Temple.

The white marble idol is currently with the trust. It shows Ram Lalla holding a golden bow and arrow. Behind the deity is an arch-like structure that contains smaller sculptures depicting various incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The idol shows remarkable craftsmanship as jewellery and clothes adorning the deity are chiselled out of marble. The dimensions of the idol are in line with those laid down by the trust overseeing the construction of the temple.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The 51-inch black granite idol that now adorns the temple’s sanctum sanctorum has been carved out of a rock 2.5 billion years old, National Institute of Rock Mechanics HS Venkatesh has told NDTV.

“The rock is highly durable and resistant to climatic variation and will sustain thousands of years in this subtropical zone with minimum maintenance,” he has said.

The rock used for the idol was brought all the way from Karnataka and was reportedly excavated from Gujjegowdanapura in Mysuru. According to news agency PTI, a local contractor drew the temple trust’s attention to the rock’s quality after it was found during a levelling exercise on agricultural land.

In Ayodhya yesterday for the ‘pran pratistha’ ceremony, sculptor Yogiraj said it was the best day of his life. “I have always felt that Lord Ram has been shielding me and my family from all the bad times, and I strongly believe that it was Him who chose me for the auspicious task. I spent sleepless nights working on the idol with precision, but it was all worth it. I feel I am the luckiest person on Earth and today is the best day of my life,” he told PTI.

Besides Mr Yogiraj and Mr Pandey, Ganesh Bhatt from Karnataka had also carved a sculpture that was considered for the sanctum sanctorum. That too will now be placed somewhere in the temple.

Large parts of the temple are yet to be constructed, including the first floor that will house the idol of Raja Ram, with those of Sita, Laxman and Hanuman.
