13 Dead, 40 Injured In Andhra Train Accident, Rescue Ops On: 10 Points

Andhra train accident: Eighteen trains have been cancelled so far.

Hyderabad:
Thirteen people died and 40 were injured in a rail accident in Andhra Pradesh after a passenger train overshot the signal and hit another from behind on the Howrah-Chennai line last evening.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. A special passenger train between Visakhapatnam and Palasa was on restricted speed on the main line between Alamanda and Kantakapalle due to no signal when a Vizag-Rayagada passenger train hit it from behind.

  2. The last three coaches of the Visakhapatnam-Palasa train and the locomotive of the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train along with two coaches, got derailed, DRM Saurabh Prasad told NDTV. One coach derailed and rested on a goods train wagon on one side.

  3. The death count increased to 13 from nine last night, Vizianagaram Collector Nagalakshmi confirmed to NDTV, hoping to complete the rescue efforts by this morning. At least 40 were injured and are being treated at various hospitals.

  4. Eighteen trains have been cancelled so far and 22 diverted, Mr Biswajit Sahu, PRO, told NDTV this morning. He said the accident may have occurred due to the fault of the Vizag-Rayagada loco pilot, who died in the impact of the collision. Railways sources had earlier said that signalling may not have been noticed by the loco pilot.

  5. Pictures from the site last evening showed the coaches derailed and people crowding around. Except the derailed and affected coaches, the site was cleared by midnight, said Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

  6. Chief Minister YSR Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh for the family of those who died. Those who suffered serious injuries will get Rs 2.5 lakh and passengers with minor injuries will get Rs 50,000.

  7. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reviewed the situation and condoled the loss of lives. He announced another Rs 2 lakh assistance for the family of those who died in the accident and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

  8. The railway minister also spoke to Chief Minister Reddy, who expressed deep shock over the accident and ordered all arrangements to be made to ensure treatment of the injured. Mr Reddy has also sought time-to-time update on the incident.

  9. The war room in Delhi railway ministry is monitoring the situation, said the Railways source. The East Coast Railway has released helpline numbers (Bhubaneswar – 0674-2301625, 2301525, 2303069, and Waltair – 0891-2885914.)

  10. Nearly five months ago, a horrific accident involving three trains killed over 280 passengers in Odisha. The Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express and a goods train were involved in the accident on June 2 near the Bahanaga Bazar station.

“I’ve never come across a sports team that has underperformed like this England team, given the level of expectation that is on their shoulders. There’s something within the team that is definitely unsettled. The method which they’re trying to use and given the substantial nature in which they’ve lost the game[s], it is definitely called into question, the morale within the changing room and the confidence. It must be at its lowest that it’s been for a considerable period of time now,” Morgan told Sky Sports

Erdogan’s “Crescent-Crusader” Remark Prompts Israel’s Diplomatic Recall

Erdogan's 'Crescent-Crusader' Remark Prompts Israel's Diplomatic Recall

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan led a massive protest in Istanbul against Israel

Istanbul:

Israel said Saturday it was recalling its diplomatic staff from Turkey after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered a fierce attack on its military operation against Hamas militants in Gaza.

The decision delivered a body blow to the sides’ nascent efforts to restore political and economic relations after a decade of all but frozen ties.

Israel and Turkey — an overwhelmingly Muslim nation that forms the bulwark of NATO defences on the edge of the Middle East — had only just agreed to reappoint ambassadors last year.

They were also restarting discussions on a US-backed natural gas pipeline project that could have formed the basis for much closer and more lasting cooperation in the coming years.

But their relations have unravelled as Erdogan picks up the pace and venom of his attacks on Israel’s retaliatory military operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas militants staged a surprise attack on October 7 during which they killed 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and seized more than 220 hostages.

The Hamas-controlled health ministry in Gaza has said Israeli strikes have  killed 7,703 people — mainly civilians — with more than 3,500 of them children.

Erodgan’s Islamic-rooted party staged a massive rally in Istanbul on Saturday that the president said drew an estimated a crowd of 1.5 million people.

“Israel, you are an occupier,” he told the Turkish and Palestinian-flag waving sea of supporters.

He accused the Israel government of behaving like a “war criminal” and trying to “eradicate” Palestinians.

“Of course, every country has the right to defend itself. But where is the justice in this case? There is no justice — just a vicious massacre happening in Gaza.”

Israeli ordered the return of all diplomatic staff from Turkey moments after Erdogan finished his remarks.

“Given the grave statements coming from Turkey, I have ordered the return of diplomatic representatives there in order to conduct a reevaluation of the relations between Israel and Turkey,” Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said in a statement.

‘Crusade’

Erdogan has been a leading international supporter of Palestinian rights during his two-decade rule.

He took a more cautious line in the first days after the October 7 attack by Hamas, but has become much more vocal as the reported death toll from Israel’s military response has grown.

Erdogan told Saturday’s rally that Israel was “a pawn in the region” that was being used by Western powers to stamp their authority on the Middle East.

“The main culprit behind the massacre unfolding in Gaza is the West,” Erdogan declared.

“If we leave aside some conscientious voices… the massacre in Gaza is entirely the work of the West.”

And he accused Israel’s allies of creating a “crusade war atmosphere” pitting Christians against Muslims.

“Listen to our call for dialogue,” Erdogan said. “No one loses from a just peace.”

Erdogan’s address came in response to days of pro-Palestinian protests in Istanbul and other major cities organised by Turkey’s more right-wing and Islamic conservative groups.

But one poll released this week showed the majority of respondents preferring to see Turkey remain either neutral or try to play a mediating role in the war.

The Metropoll survey showed 11.3 percent of the respondents saying they “back Hamas”.

But 34.5 percent said Turkey should stay “neutral” and 26.4 percent said it should mediate.

Just 3.0 percent said they “support Israel”.

Hamas Vows “Full Force” After Israel Steps Up Gaza Ground Operations

Hamas Vows 'Full Force' After Israel Steps Up Gaza Ground Operations

Hamas said late on Friday its fighters were clashing with Israeli troop.

Gaza City:

Hamas said on Saturday its militants in Gaza were ready to confront Israeli attacks with “full force” after Israel’s military widened its air and ground attacks on the Palestinian enclave.

The Palestinian militant group that rules Gaza said earlier its fighters were clashing with Israeli troops in areas near the border with Israel after Israel reported intensified attacks in Gaza.

“In addition to the attacks carried out in the last few days, ground forces are expanding their operations tonight,” Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a televised news briefing on Friday evening, raising the question of whether a long-anticipated ground invasion of Gaza may be beginning.

He said Israel’s air force was conducting extensive strikes on tunnels dug by Hamas and other infrastructure.

The armed wing of Hamas said late on Friday its fighters were clashing with Israeli troops in Gaza’s northeastern town of Beit Hanoun and in the central area of Al-Bureij.

“The Al-Qassam brigades and all the Palestinian resistance forces are completely ready to confront (Israel’s) aggression with full force and frustrate its incursions,” Hamas said in a statement early on Saturday.

“Netanyahu and his defeated army will not be able to achieve any military victory,” referring to the Israeli prime minister.

Israeli ground forces had massed outside Gaza, where Israel has been conducting an intense campaign of aerial bombardment since a deadly Oct. 7 attack by hundreds of Hamas gunmen on Israeli communities near the strip. Israel says 1,400 people, mostly civilians, were killed and more than 200 taken hostage, some of them foreign nationals or with dual Israeli nationality.

Al Jazeera, which was broadcasting live footage overnight showing frequent blasts in Gaza, said Israeli air strikes had hit areas around the enclave’s main hospital.

Reuters was unable to verify the reports of the strikes near Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

Israel’s military accused Hamas on Friday of using the hospital as a shield for its tunnels and operational centres, an allegation the group denied.

UN ASSEMBLY BACKS CALL FOR HUMANITARIAN TRUCE

On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly backed a resolution drafted by Arab states calling for an immediate humanitarian truce and demanded aid access to Gaza and protection of civilians.

While not binding, the resolution carries political weight, reflecting the global mood. It passed to a round of applause with 121 votes in favour, while 44 abstained and 14 – including Israel and the United States – voted no.

After Israel announced a step-up in operations, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said the U.S. did support a pause in Israeli military activity in Gaza to get humanitarian aid, fuel and electricity to civilians there.

Kirby would not comment on the expanded ground operation. But he said Washington supported Israel’s right to defend itself and added: “We’re not drawing red lines for Israel.”

Kirby also said that if getting more than 200 hostages abducted by Hamas out of Gaza required a localized temporary pause, then the U.S. supported that.

In Gaza, telecoms firms and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said internet and phone services were cut off as a result of Israeli bombardments.

‘BLACKED OUT’

“Gaza is currently blacked out,” said Paltel, the largest telecommunications provider in Gaza.

The Red Crescent Society said it had completely lost contact with its Gaza operations room and its teams operating there, and the Hamas-run government said rescue crews were unable to receive emergency calls.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) said it had been unable to reach some Palestinian colleagues, and said it was particularly worried for “patients, medical staff and thousands of families taking shelter at Al Shifa hospital and other health facilities.”

The head of the U.N. Children’s Fund UNICEF, Catherine Russell, said her agency too could no longer communicate with staff in Gaza.

“I’m extremely concerned about their safety and another night of unspeakable horror for 1M children in #Gaza,” she posted on X. “All humanitarians and the children and families they serve MUST be protected.”

Mark Regev, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told MSNBC that Israel was starting its payback against Hamas and “Gaza will feel our wrath tonight.”

“They will continue to be on the receiving end of our military blows until we have dismantled their military machine and dissolve their political structure in Gaza,” he told Fox News. “When this is over, Gaza will be very different.”

Israeli leaders have vowed to wipe out Hamas and kill the leaders and planners of the Oct. 7 assault that surprised and shocked Israel. Israel has said it is preparing a ground invasion, but has been urged by the U.S. and Arab countries to delay an operation that would multiply the number of civilian casualties in the densely populated coastal strip and might ignite a wider conflict.

Hamas, backed by Israel’s main regional enemy Iran, has had years to prepare its defences. Over the years, Israel has uncovered a sophisticated network of tunnels and Hamas has fired missiles at Israel since launching this month’s attack.

Palestinian health authorities say Israeli bombing has already killed more than 7,000 Palestinians.

Concerns about a risk of a wider Middle East conflict have risen in recent days with the U.S. dispatching more military assets to the region as Israel pummelled targets in Gaza and Hamas supporters in Lebanon and Syria.

Much of the infrastructure of Gaza, which has been living under blockade by Israel and Egypt since 2007, has been shattered by Israeli bombing.

Power has been cut for days, crippling treatment facilities and depriving Gazans of fresh water, while half of its housing stock has been damaged and 20,000 residential units destroyed or rendered uninhabitable, according to the Hamas media office.

Palestinians said they received renewed Israeli military warnings to move from Gaza’s north to the south to avoid the deadliest theatre of the war.

Making the journey south remains highly risky amid air strikes and southern areas have also been bombed, Gaza residents said.

Many families have refused to leave, fearing a repeat of the experience of previous wars with Israel when Palestinians who left their homes and land were never able to return.

PAK vs SA Live Score: Here’s what Temba Bavuma said at the toss

We’ve played some good cricket, inspirational performances. We’ve build some momentum with our bowlers and batters clicking. This is not like a T20 WC where you play just 4-5 group games, we need to keep doing well. I would have surely batted here, looks like a good wicket. Hopefully it stays nice and hard like this, we’ll have to assess quickly on how to go about things here. Three changes – I come back, Tabriz Shamsi and Ngidi comes in. Reeza Hendricks, Rabada and Lizaad Williams miss out.

PAK vs SA Live Score: Here’s what Babar Azam said at the toss

We’ll bat first. Every match is important now and we are focusing on that. All departments we need to improve, fielding especially. We need to stick together and discuss how to get better. I’m happy to do well myself now. Two changes – Hasan Ali is sick, so Waseem Jr comes in. Nawaz is also back, Usama Mir misses out.

    Live Cricket Score: Pitch report

This has been the lowest scoring ground in this World Cup. The average score here is 254, it has the lowest runs per over as well. Short hit towards the leg side – 61m and 63m. The other side is much longer. Captains need to be careful on where they bowl their spinners from. The pitch is really hard and smooth, with a bit of grass. This will be a good pitch where the ball will turn, but not dramatically. The pitch shouldn’t change too much in the second innings. Pakistan need to tactically get South Africa to do something they have struggled with this World Cup, they need to get them to chase, reckons Sanjay Manjrekar.

Hamas Says 'Almost 50' Israeli Hostages Killed Since Israel Strikes Began

Hamas’s armed wing said Thursday that “almost 50” Israeli hostages held by its operators in the Gaza Strip have been killed since Israel began bombarding the Palestinian territory.

“(Ezzedine) Al-Qassam Brigades estimates that the number of Zionist prisoners who were killed in the Gaza Strip as a result of Zionist strikes and massacres has reached almost 50,” the group said in a statement issued on its Telegram channel.

AFP was not immediately able to verify the claim. Israel launched a massive air and artillery bombardment on Gaza after Hamas carried out a brutal attack on Israel on October 7.
