Heavy Rains in Nagpur: The city received torrential downpours from Friday midnight

Nagpur:

Heavy rains flooded many parts of Nagpur city, following which 180 people, including 40 students from a school for the hearing and speech-impaired, were rescued, said Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavi on Saturday.

The National Disaster Response (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are rescuing people from flooded homes and streets. Two Army units are reaching the Ambazari area, where a lake overflowed, said Fadnavis.

The city received torrential downpours from Friday midnight. According to the weather department, Nagpur airport reported 106 mm of rainfall till 5.30 am.

Several roads and residential areas have been inundated due to heavy rains, said officials.

The administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges as a precautionary measure.

Fadnavis, who is an MLA from Nagpur, took to X in the morning to share that he was continuously monitoring the rain situation in the city.

“There has been incessant rainfall due to which the Ambazari lake is overflowing. The low-lying area around it is affected more due to this. Other parts of the city too are affected,” said his office on X.

The deputy CM has instructed the Nagpur collector, municipal commissioner and police commissioner to “immediately activate multiple teams for rescuing people who are stuck at few places”, Fadnavis’s office said.

Later, Fadnavis said on X that two units of NDRF and two units of SDRF, which were divided into 7 groups, had rescued 140 citizens. Similarly, 40 students were rescued from a school for the hearing and speech-impaired, he said.

The fire department is also carrying out rescue work, the deputy CM said.

Fadnavis also appealed to people not to believe in any rumours.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has advised people not to step out of their homes unless necessary. Due to continuous rains, many city roads are waterlogged, it said waterlogged.

The Nagpur centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said “severe/moderate thunderstorm with lightning” will likely continue at isolated places in Nagpur, Bhandara and Gondia districts. There is also a possibility of “intense rain at isolated places” in these areas, it said.

Light to moderate rainfall is likely to occur at many places in Wardha and some parts of Chandrapur, Bhandara and Gondia districts.

Light rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over Amravati, Yavatmal and Gadchiroli, it added.

Man’s Cut-Up Body Thrown Outside House In Punjab, Killers Taunt Parents

Man’s Cut-Up Body Thrown Outside House In Punjab, Killers Taunt Parents

A young man has been killed in Punjab and his cut-up body was thrown outside his house, with his killers telling his parents, “here’s your lion of a son”.

The incident took place in Dhilwan tehsil of Kapurthala on Tuesday and, despite the father identifying the main accused, no arrests have been made yet. The case has also sparked a political row with Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal alleging that “jungle raj” is prevailing in Punjab under the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government.

The young man, Hardeep Singh alias Deepa, had a long-standing dispute with another person from the area, Harpreet Singh alias Happy. Both Deepa and Happy had cases registered against them at the Dhilwan police station in connection with the dispute.

Around 10.30 pm, he and his wife heard a knock on their door and, given the late hour, decided to go to the terrace to check. Mr Singh saw Happy and around five other men shouting. “Your son has been killed. His work has been done. Here’s your lion of a son,” Happy said, before turning around and leaving with his aides.

When they opened the door, they saw Deepa lying in a badly injured state. Deepa told them that Happy and his men had stabbed him with swords and kirpans. He was taken to the civil hospital in Jalandhar, where he was declared dead.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Kuldeep Singh from Dhilwan police station, who is the investigating officer in the case, said, “Many cases were already registered in the police station against both Happy and Deepa. Based on the father’s complaint, a case of murder has been registered against Happy and his five unknown associates. We are carrying out raids to nab them.”

Referring to Deepa as a kabaddi player, Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal said he was saddened to hear of the murder. He said the fearlessness of the murderers shows that “jungle raj” is prevailing in Punjab, and called for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to step down.

After Women’s Bill Passes Through Rajya Sabha, A Vote of Thanks For PM

After Women’s Bill Passes Through Rajya Sabha, A Vote of Thanks For PM

New Delhi:

Close to the midnight hour on the last day of the special session of parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen posing for photos with hordes of laughing, chattering women MPs at the new building. The group had gathered to record a historic moment — the passing of the women’s reservation bill that allows them 33 per cent reservation in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

A huge bouquet was presented to the Prime Minster and the women, cutting across party lines, offered sweets to each other.

The initiative — planned for decades — finally tasted success today with the passing of the bill in the Rajya Sabha. It was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The passage through Rajya Sabha was special — it was unanimous with no abstention or negative voting. There were two negative votes in the Lok Sabha yesterday. It got the approval of an overwhelming majority of 454 MPs, showing the opposition, despite its reservation about the time frame of implementation, had chosen to back the bill.

PM Modi called it a “defining moment” in the nation’s democratic journey.

“I thank all the Rajya Sabha MPs who voted for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Such unanimous support is indeed gladdening,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

“This is not merely a legislation; it is a tribute to the countless women who have made our nation. India has been enriched by their resilience and contributions. As we celebrate today, we are reminded of the strength, courage, and indomitable spirit of all the women of our nation. This historic step is a commitment to ensuring their voices are heard even more effectively,” he added.

The quota can only be implemented after a census and delimitation exercise, which, under Constitution’s Article 82, can be conducted after 2026, which pushes the implementation to 2029 or beyond. While the government has said that the census and delimitation will begin after next year’s general election, implementing quota sooner may call for a constitutional amendment.

The Opposition has put on record two key demands — immediate implementation of quota and a sub-category of reservation for women from Other Backward Classes.

Punjab Cops Launch Statewide Crackdown On Aides Of Gangster Goldy Brar

Punjab Cops Launch Statewide Crackdown On Aides Of Gangster Goldy Brar

Brar has at least 13 cases registered against him in India.

Chandigarh:

Amid India’s diplomatic stand-off with Canada, the Punjab Police has launched a statewide crackdown on the accomplices of gangster Goldy Brar. An accused in the killing of singer Sidhu Moosewala, Brar is suspected to be hiding in Canada and has alleged links with Khalistani extremists.

Brar is an active member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and has at least 13 cases against him for offences like murder, attempt-to-murder and arms smuggling registered against him in India. He also has an Interpol red corner notice against him and is wanted by law enforcement authorities both in India and Canada.

The Punjab Police action comes a day after the National Investigation Agency intensified its investigation against Khalistani terrorists carrying out activities in India. The agency had announced a cash reward for information on five members of the terrorist group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), including Harwinder Singh Sandhu alias ‘Rinda’ and Lakhbir Singh Sandhu alias ‘Landa’.

In the operation, which began on Thursday morning, the Punjab Police has begun rounding up many associates of Brar and the Bishnoi gang and other people who have dealings with them. Police officials said that it has often been seen that aides of Brar and Bishnoi, even when they are behind bars, entice young people accused of petty offences like drug peddling and try and push them into committing bigger crimes.

The officials said the gang’s members and associates give these young people an ideological push and lure them with the promise of money to get them to carry out murders and targeted killings.

The operation is being undertaken in all 22 districts of the state and a detailed report on the detainees and the evidence gathered will be submitted to the police brass after it is completed. The crackdown is also aimed at cutting off the supply chain of drugs.

Worked As Trucker

Goldy Brar, alias Satinderjit Singh, is a native of Muktsar district in Punjab and became friends with Lawrence Bishnoi when they were both active in student politics in Chandigarh around ten years ago.

Brar moved to Canada on a student visa five years ago and worked as a trucker for a while. Earlier this year, the country had named him on its list of 25 most-wanted fugitives.

Singer Sidhu Moosewala was shot dead in his SUV near his village, Moosa, in Punjab’s Mansa district on June 29. The next day, Brar had said in a Facebook post that he had planned the murder to avenge the killing of another gangster.

South Will Not Suffer Over Delimitation, Sources Say Amid Population Concern

South Will Not Suffer Over Delimitation, Sources Say Amid Population Concern

New Delhi:

The government will be considerate of the fact the southern states have successfully managed to control their population and so should not suffer during delimitation, top sources indicated today amid a bitter battle in parliament over the women’s reservation bill.

Fears of southern parties that South India will be penalised for early population policies by an impact on their seats, will be allayed, sources told NDTV.  The huge population in the north ensures that they will get more seats and there are concerns that the south will be under-represented.

The government understands that concern and will do the needful, sources said.

The government is trying to push through the bill — meant to reserve 33 per cent seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies — in the ongoing special session of Parliament.

But the reservation can only be implemented after a census and delimitation exercise.

After next year’s election, a Delimitation Commission will be formed. It will be a democratic exercise with representatives from all parties, sources said. The census will be carried out alongside. Even so, the implementation of the women’s quota can begin only after 2029.

Under Article 82 of the Constitution, only the Census data after 2026 can be used for the delimitation exercise. There is no clarity yet on how the government plans to cross that hurdle.

The last delimitation exercise took 18 months, had over 211 meetings with public hearings in every state.

In the seven-hour debate in the new parliament today, the opposition parties demanded that the bill be implemented without any delay.

Opening the debate, Sonia Gandhi underscored that the initiative for the bill was taken under the UPA government.

“How many years will they (women) have to wait… two… four… eight? Is this right? Congress demands the bill be implemented immediately,” she said, calling for reservation for women from SC, ST and OBC communities. Delaying this would be gross injustice to women,” she added.

The 2010 bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha but could not be  presented in Lok Sabha following opposition from Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Janata Dal — a point that has provided ammunition to the BJP.

Ahead Of Polls, Congress Flags Off “Jan Aakrosh Yatras” In Madhya Pradesh

Ahead Of Polls, Congress Flags Off “Jan Aakrosh Yatras” In Madhya Pradesh

The seven yatras will cover 11,400 km and all 230 assembly seats in 15 days.

Bhopal:

The Congress started its “Jan Aakrosh Yatra” in Madhya Pradesh on Ganesh Chaturthi, intensifying its campaign against the ruling BJP ahead of the assembly polls. The yatra comes as the ruling BJP’s 10,500-km five Jan Ashirwad Yatras are approaching their last stretch in the state.

The seven yatras will cover 11,400 km and all 230 assembly seats in 15 days. Senior leaders Dr Govind Singh, Ajay Singh, former state Congress chiefs Suresh Pachauri, Kantilal Bhuria, Arun Yadav, former ministers Jitu Patwari and Kamleshwar Patel will lead the raths.

At a time when the BJP has been attacking the Opposition’s INDIA bloc on Sanatan Dharma remark, all seven Jan Akrosh Yatras started on Ganesh Chaturthi. The leaders started the rallies after offering prayers at prominent temples in different parts of the state.

State Congress president Kamal Nath said, “On the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, the Congress is starting its Jan Aakrosh Yatras. The purpose of these yatras is to express the pain and suffering of the oppressed people due to the misrule of Shivraj Singh Chouhan government for 18 years”.

The BJP, meanwhile, attacked the Congress on the issue of corruption.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami — who was participating in the rallies, appealed to the people in Bina to ensure that Mr Chouhan becomes the Chief Minister again.

The BJP rallies, starting from various parts of the state, will reach in Bhopal on September 25. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to address the “maha kumbh” or mega gathering of BJP workers on the occasion.

The dates of the assembly elections, due by year-end, is yet to be announced.
