India Trashes Canada’s Big Charge On Khalistani Terrorist Killing: 10 Facts

India Trashes Canada’s Big Charge On Khalistani Terrorist Killing: 10 Facts

New Delhi:
India today rejected as “absurd and motivated” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s charge that it played a role in the June killing of a Khalistani terrorist. Canada has also expelled a senior Indian diplomat over the issue.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government had “credible allegations” linking Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing with the “agents of the Government of India”.

  2. “Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty. It is contrary to the fundamental rules by which free, open, and democratic societies conduct themselves,” he told an emergency session of the parliament today.

  3. The Indian government “completely rejected” the Canadian PM’s allegations and said their political figures openly expressing sympathy for “such elements” remains a matter of deep concern.

  4. “Such unsubstantiated allegations seek to shift the focus from Khalistani terrorists and extremists, who have been provided shelter in Canada and continue to threaten India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The inaction of the Canadian Government on this matter has been a long-standing and continuing concern,” said a foreign ministry statement.

  5. The space given in Canada to a range of illegal activities including murders, human trafficking and organised crime is not new, the statement said, and urged Canada to take prompt action against all “anti-India elements” operating from there.

  6. Canada has not named the Indian diplomat it expelled, but Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said the person was the head of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s intelligence agency, in her country.

  7. Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who headed the Khalistani Tiger Force and the Canadian arm of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), was shot dead by unknown attackers near a gurdwara in Surrey in June. Nijjar, who was from Punjab’s Jalandhar, moved to Canada in 1997. He was wanted in India for being the “mastermind” of the Khalistani Tiger Force, a designated terror group in India.

  8. Last July, the Indian anti-terror agency announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh on Nijjar in connection with the murder of a Hindu priest in Jalandhar, Punjab. Nijjar was also accused in the 2007 bombing of a cinema in Punjab. The NIA is also probing the recent attacks on Indian diplomatic missions in Canada, UK and US.

  9. Canada has been among the favoured hubs of expat Sikhs where extremism has mushroomed over the last few years. The past few months saw multiple Khalistani activities in Canada, including protests outside the Indian Embassy and threat posters for Indian diplomats.

  10. PM Modi conveyed concern over “continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada” during a bilateral meeting with Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Delhi this month.

“You Are Our Guardian”: M Kharge’s ‘Protection’ Request To Jagdeep Dhankhar

“You Are Our Guardian”: M Kharge’s ‘Protection’ Request To Jagdeep Dhankhar

Mr Kharge spoke on several issues, exceeding the allotted time.

New Delhi:

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge today complained to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar that the Opposition doesn’t get enough chances to put forth their views on various subjects inside the house, and requested that the cameras inside the parliament, which live-telecast the proceedings, should focus equally on the opposition MPs when they are speaking.

“We don’t get the chance outside. We do here, so please let us have it,” he said while addressing the Rajya Sabha on the first day of the special session of the Parliament on Monday. All MPs should have the freedom to speak even if he himself might be wrong at times, Mr Kharge told Mr Dhankhar. “Even for my small mistakes, you punish me harshly. They (BJP MPs) make such huge mistakes, the entire country watches, but you forgive everything. I request you to balance both,” he said.

What’s mentioned here on the record sends a message outside too, that the people’s issues are being discussed, he said, adding that the ‘constitutional work’ that the MPs do in the house should get encouragement from him and also from the government.

“You are our guardian. If there’s any injustice against us, you are the one who is supposed to protect us. We are so few in number, if all of them (ruling coalition NDA’s MPs) start attacking us then we will come crying to you,” he said in a light-hearted exchange with Mr Dhankhar, stressing his protection is needed.

Mallikarjun Kharge also spoke about the ethnic violence in Manipur, saying the opposition tried alot for the PM to make a statement on it in the house. Mr Dhankhar said he, too, tried to initiate a discussion on Manipur in the house. “The problem is that the PM doesn’t even listen to you,” Mr Kharge shot back, adding that whenever the opposition looks at him, he looks at them (BJP leaders). Mr Dhankhar promptly countered, saying “main majboor nahin, majboot hoon (I am not helpless, I am strengthened).”

Mr Kharge said bills aren’t sent to Standing Committees for review anymore, which should be done. “This is your right. To flag issues in the bills, and send them to the Standing Committees,” he said. The Congress president pointed out that 71% of the bills were sent to Standing Committtees during 2009 to 2014, when the UPA was in power. It went down to 27% in 2014-2019, and sunk further to 13% then onwards.

The Congress president started his address with a Hindi poem taking a swipe at the Centre.

“If you want to change something, then change the situation
What is accomplished by changing names like this?

If you want to give something, give employment to the youth
What is accomplished by making everyone unemployed?

Try expanding your heart a little
What is accomplished by killing people?

If you can’t do anything, leave your chair.
What is accomplished by scaring each other?

You are proud of your rule
What is accomplished by bullying people?” he read out from a paper.

The strong foundation stones that support a structure are not visible to anyone, only the name on the wall is, Mr Kharge said in an apparent jibe at PM Modi, without naming him.

He also said that the government was focusing on weakening the “strong” Opposition through central agencies like CBI and ED.

“Nehru ji believe that the absence of a strong Opposition means that there are significant drawbacks in the system. If there is no strong Opposition, it is not right. Now, that there is a strong Opposition, focus is on weakening it through ED, CBI…Take them (into their own party), put them in a washing machine and when they come out all clean – make them permanent (in one’s own party). You can see what is happening today. PM comes to the Parliament rarely and when he does he leaves after making it an event,” Mr Kharge said.

Remembering Jawaharlal Nehru and his contribution to nation-building, the Congress Chief said, “Nehru ji led India during difficult times. He was in jail for 14 years for the independence of India. Nothing new will happen if we shift to a new parliament…’. The BJP should stop saying (demeaning) things about him, he said.

Mr Kharge also alleged that PM Modi has given statements just twice in the Lok Sabha, and compared the figure with former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh.

“Atal Bihari Vajpayee gave statement 21 times, Manmohan Singh gave 30 times during their tenure,” Mr Kharge said. “However, apart from few ‘custormary comments’, PM Modi gave his statement only twice,” he added.

Event To Name Tiger Cubs Sparks Political Row In Maharashtra

Event To Name Tiger Cubs Sparks Political Row In Maharashtra

Eknath Shinde picking up chits to name tiger cubs

Mumbai:

A seemingly innocuous event to name three tiger cubs sparked a political row in Maharashtra on Sunday after a chit apparently carrying the name ‘Aditya’ was taken back and replaced with another one.

Opposition leaders linked the name to Aaditya Thackeray, who was a minister in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government that collapsed last year after a rebellion by present Chief Minister Eknath Shinde resulted in an acrimonious split in the Shiv Sena.

The incident unfolded in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city when Chief Minister Shinde, his Deputy Ajit Pawar and state forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar were invited to a function to name two male and one female tiger cubs.

After Mr Shinde took out one chit from a glass bowl, visuals of the event showed, Ajit Pawar was requested to pick a chit from another container.

With a grin, Mr Pawar showed the chit to someone. A voice in the background could then be heard saying “it’s Aditya” and suggesting that Mr Pawar should go for another.

Mr Pawar picked a second chit and the name on it – Vikram – was read out. The three cubs were finally named Shravani, Vikram and Kanha.

However, the chit apparently containing the name ‘Aditya’ gave a handle to opposition leaders to slam the Shinde government.

Leader of the opposition in the legislative council Ambadas Danve and Shiv Sena (UBT) said, “Whether from this world (referring to Aaditya Thackeray) or the sky (Sun is also called Aditya), no one can stop Aaditya. This government is even scared of his name,” he said.

Speaking to the media later, Mr Shinde downplayed a question on the naming row. “Two chits were pulled out simultaneously during the naming ceremony. Hence, one chit was kept aside. There is nothing more to this,” he said.

Mr Mungantiwar said, “Such petty issues should not be discussed. A cub born in the wild cannot be named, but the one born here in the zoo gets a name. We are not scared of any Aditya.”

Local MP and AIMIM leader Imtiaz Jaleel sarcastically said there was no need to choose any other names for the cubs. “The cubs could have been named Devendra, Ajit and Eknath.” He called the episode “low level of politics”. “I do not want to make any further comment on this,” he added.

12 Passengers, 2 Crew Killed After Plane Crashes In Brazil

Brazilian media reports said there were no survivors of the crash. (Representational)

Rio De Janeiro:

Fourteen people were killed Saturday when a plane crashed in the Brazilian Amazon in the northern town of Barcelos, a popular tourist stop, the governor of Amazonas state said.

Twelve passengers and two crew were killed in the accident, Governor Wilson Lima wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Brazilian media reports said there were no survivors of the crash.

State officials did not immediately respond to requests for further details.

News site G1 said the plane was an 18-passenger EMB-110, a twin-engine turboprop manufactured by Brazilian aircraft-maker Embraer.

It was reportedly on its way from the state capital, Manaus, to Barcelos, about a 90-minute flight.

Located on the Rio Negro, an Amazon tributary, it is bordered by several national parks and other protected areas.

News site UOL said the passengers were Brazilians traveling to the region for sport fishing, citing state security secretary Vinicius Almeida.

“Time To Lead…”: M Kharge Shares Sonia Gandhi’s Message For Telangana

“Time To Lead…”: M Kharge Shares Sonia Gandhi’s Message For Telangana

The Congress will hold a mega rally in Hyderabad on Monday

Hyderabad, New Delhi:

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is meeting today to finalise the strategy for the upcoming assembly elections in five states.

The crucial meeting in Hyderabad is aimed at boosting the party’s campaign in the poll-bound Telangana, officials said.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will chair the CWC meeting. Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi will also be there, they said.

Mr Kharge said his party has fought for and ushered in democracy, social justice, progress and equality in the country. “In consonance with our long cherished philosophy, the Congress Working Committee will craft a comprehensive road map to lead the party towards victory,” he said.

The focus of the meetings, he said, will be on strengthening the organisation.

Mr Kharge also shared former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s message. “We had made a promise to the people of Telangana. We have fulfilled that promise,” Sonia Gandhi said referring to the creation of the state of Telangana following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

“Now, it’s time to lead the state into a new era of progress and prosperity. The Congress Working Committee stands ready to write a new chapter of development with dignity for all people of Telangana and our nation,” she said.

Party general secretary K C Venugopal said he is confident that Congress would form government in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram that go to polls later this year.

The grand-old party will also hold a mega rally in Hyderabad. “We will announce six guarantees for the people of Telangana. We hope that when the elections come, the party will get a clear mandate from the people,” said senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.

Mr Ramesh termed the CWC meeting as historic that will be “transformative” for Telangana politics.

Launching a scathing attack on the BRS government led by K Chandrasekhar Rao, he said, “Understand one thing that the Modi government and the KCR government are two sides of the same coin. There is no difference between them, in Delhi there is Narendra Modi and in Hyderabad there is KCR.”.

Telangana is set to witness a triangular contest between the BJP, the ruling BRS and the Congress. The Telangana election will serve as a litmus test for the INDIA alliance before the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress reconstituted the Congress Working Committee, and made some surprise additions last month.

The committee was formed 10 months after Mallikarjun Kharge became the party chief. It has 39 regular members, 32 permanent invitees and 13 special invitees.
